WOOOOO! Welcome Back!
I am DisasterDoodlesInc, and now this entire fanfiction rests solely in my hands! Despite the fact that both of us are now in school!
I honestly don't think we needed a two week hiatus, but it wasn't my decision. Anyways, there might be a noticeable shift in writing style in the coming chapters, so heads up.
Additionally, Idol and I have agreed to use this arc to further the development of Yangchen and her backstory, which I would believe is a degree or so less tragic than Amano's, although who am I to speak. I tried. Hope you like it.
This is all a very new experience for me, as I've never successfully published a fanfiction that wasn't already prewritten. If you check my profile you'll find I've only got one fic published, and all of them were prewritten before being published all on the same day.
I hereby make this promise: I will not abandon this fanfiction. It is in my personal belief that Idol has a tendency to abandon her fanfictions frequently, which I promise not to do. I have time, I have experience, I will go down with this ship. Or ships, because Idol herself is in love with Todoroki, despite her continuous assurance to me that she is not.
I hope you enjoy this chapter!
EDIT from IdolGirl: I am NOT in love wth Todoroki no matter what Disaster says. Don't believe her. For the sake of my sanity.
After the incident at the USJ, the world seemed to fall apart.
News stations buzzed with information regarding the attack. This was the first appearance of villainy towards a school in years!
All eyes seemed to turn to Japan, and the students of Class 1-A almost became celebrities. Yangchen made the news as one of the bravest of us all. Several gatherings were held to pray for her safety.
Daughter of famous CEO and owner of Lions Automotive injured in accident during transfer program.
UA student gravely injured at USJ Training Facility during school exercise.
Bravery: Tse Yangchen's Persistence in the USJ.
I was told by one of the faculty members that her parents tried to contact Aizawa-san, although they couldn't get through because he was currently in the hospital. I was told that they asked to speak with someone who was close to Yangchen, and the school had chosen me. I quickly turned down, apologizing and knowing that I might say something wrong and make things worse for her family.
If I don't have parents of my own to disappoint, I'd be best not do it for someone else.
My own state wasn't too good. After they were open to visitors, I practically lived in the hospital rooms. Aizawa-san woke up in a day, but after three days, Yangchen still had shown no signs of life other than the constant beeping of the heart monitor.
I guess the hospital staff felt bad for me because they let me stay the night multiple times, albeit reluctantly.
I wasn't sleeping well either. The nightmares had gotten a lot worse. I was going through concealer like an addict to cover up the black circles until even Bakugou noticed something and shouted at me to stop putting on so much damn makeup.
If only it were that easy.
Kirishima often visited Yangchen. They've had a budding friendship ever since the battle simulation, and it seems like they really get along well. Yangchen really needs someone like that besides me.
I liked to think that Kirishima and I were pretty good friends at this point after everything we'd been through, so we often made small talk. Sometimes about Yangchen, other times not if it was too painful.
I also had to tell Uraraka about Aizawa-san being my father figure since that slip-up. She had cornered me one day with Midoriya and Iida being her partners in crime.
Needless to say, they were shocked but they agreed to keep it a secret.
Another teacher filled in for Aizawa for a bit as he recovered. He came back a couple of days after the attack, and we welcomed him back in, albeit with a mummy wrap of bandages on his face. He was also able to come home, even though I had to do practically everything for him.
Not that I minded.
These days, Yamada-sensei was also becoming a constant presence in the house. He'd often help Aizawa-san with basic things and he'd help me make dinner. He was loud and exuberant, yet extremely honest and raw. Especially towards Aizawa-san.
If I didn't know better, I'd say that he had a crush on Aizawa-san.
And I didn't know better.
So I shipped them like the fangirl I was.
So the days were passing like that for a week. Exactly eight days after the USJ, when I was hanging out in Yangchen's room with Kirishima, Yangchen groaned.
She was waking up!
We immediately rushed to the bedside (Kirishima on the opposite side of me) as she stirred. Blearily, she opened an eye only to close it due to the harsh light.
Why do hospitals always have to be so bright?
After a few seconds, she mustered the strength to open both her eyes, and she turned her head towards us, seemingly surprised to see us. "Kiraru… Eijiro… "
Her voice was soft and was barely there. It was hoarse from disuse, but still, to me at that moment, it was the best thing I'd ever heard.
My best friend was back.
"You're alright!" Kirishima grasped her hand as tears sprung to his eyes. "You're back...you're okay!"
"Hey Red Riot," She joked lightly, voice faltering at times. She then turned her head towards me. "Y'all okay?"
I took a moment to process that.
"Are...are you serious?"
She seemed confused. " … Whaddya mean?"
I gestured to her stomach, where there were stitches from the operation. "You needed literal surgery while I got out with a sprained ankle, and you're asking me if I'm okay? I'm not the one who got punched by the Noumu!"
She widened her eyes. "Oh...that's what happened?"
I froze. Kirishima spoke for me. "You don't remember?"
Yangchen weakly shook her head. "I remember fightin' with Simba-san, n' then...I met up with...you guys n' Kiraru...got pushed by...All Might… n' then it's all a blur…"
My knuckles were white against the bed railing. "Yangchen, the doctors didn't say anything about you having a head injury."
She tried to shrug. "Eh, it doesn' matter-"
"It does matter!" I burst out, unable to contain myself. "What if it had been more serious? What if you couldn't remember anything at all? What if you had gotten amnesia? If you couldn't remember us? " My voice cracked at the end.
Kirishima and Yangchen were staring at me with wide eyes while I realized what I had just done and lowered my head in shame. Now they'd start asking questions, Kirishima especially. Yangchen knew that I had amnesia but she didn't know it was because someone slammed my head into a wall.
Wow, I'd never noticed that shade of tile before.
That's when a hand found mine.
I lifted my head in surprise as Yangchen shakily took my hand in hers. "But...that didn't happen."
"Huh?"
"I...still remember...so it's fine." She grinned at me. "Everything's gonna be fine."
If anyone asks, I will vehemently deny that I broke down sobbing like a baby at that.
At least Kirishima didn't ask questions.
Tse Family house, around 4 pm, family plus Ellison Wan Lu is watching the news
"Tonight, the newest story in Asia. Coming from Japan, a UA student was gravely injured at the USJ Training Facility during an exercise with her class. To you, Wong."
"Thanks, Liwei. According to reports, fifteen-year old transfer student Tse Yangchen-"
"Wait WHAT?!"
"What happened to her?"
"Listen!"
"-was with her class at a rescue training facility for a lesson. During their training, a group who police say called themselves the 'League of Villains' were able to gain access to the inside of the facility and attacked the students."
"Oh my god, is she okay? Honey, call up the school!"
"Shh! Just listen!"
"The League had with them a monster known as a 'Noumu.' Authorities do not have much information on the monster yet, although they do know that the monster had multiple quirks, including shock absorption and regeneration."
"AND?!"
"Pro Hero All Might arrived on the scene just in time to save most of the class. However, the Noumu was still able to get to Tse. Eyewitness accounts taken from the students say that Tse was trying to console her friend Amano Kiraru when she was punched in the stomach by the Noumu."
"Quick honey, write that down! Amano Kiraru!"
"Hospital reports have recorded several fractured bones and internal bleeding as a result of the blunt force trauma brought to her abdomen."
Cut to interview with nurse, in Japanese but with Chinese subtitles
"We believe that Tse will be in a coma for several days. However, we are very confident that she will survive. Our doctors have assessed the situation, and we promise we will try our best."
"During the attack, two other major injuries were reported, both in pro heroes. The Space Hero Thirteen was reported to have heavy damage to her back, and The Erasure Hero Eraserhead was reported to have injuries in many different parts of his body. Eraserhead is also Tse's legal guardian as part of her foreign exchange program, and is the father to Tse's aforementioned best friend, Amano Kiraru. Eraserhead is currently incapacitated. More reports on the incident will be provided, after this."
"Honey, get the school on the phone!"
"I got it!"
A teenage boy stares at the TV with tears in his eyes. Ellison tries to console him.
"UA High School, this is Midnight speaking. How can I help you?"
(In broken Japanese)
"Hello. My name is Tse Bojing, father of Tse Yangchen. Do you have a Chinese translator?"
"Yes. I can speak a good amount of Chinese. We were just about to contact you. I'm assuming you saw the news?"
"Yes. Is our daughter alright? Is she going to survive?"
"Yes sir. Your daughter is going to live. The hospital she is at gives us constant updates on her status and continues to assure us of her survival. We understand how concerned you are at this point, but we please ask you to trust us when we say we have the situation regarding your daughter's current health under control."
"I trust that you know what is right. Who will be taking care of her when she wakes up if her guardian is incapacitated?"
"The hospital reported that they predicted her guardian to return to consciousness before her, although if that is not the case she will be taken care of by another teacher, likely her English teacher, Present Mic."
"Is there a chance we can speak to her friend? The blonde one? Amano Kiraru?"
"Amano Kiraru is in fact still at the school, so I can send an announcement out to see if she is available, although she might not want to discuss it."
"We understand. Will you still send for her?"
"Yes, I will. Please wait one moment."
Several minutes later
"I'm sorry sir, but Amano Kiraru declined your request. She is likely currently still in shock about the situation and doesn't want to talk about it."
"I understand. If there is any news regarding the safety of my daughter, will you notify me?"
"Yes sir. We assure you, your daughter is in a safe position."
He pauses
"Miss, is Yangchen one of your students?"
"Yes, she is. She is one of my art history students."
"What can you tell me about her from your experience?"
"Well, she is a brilliant young girl. The first thought to come to mind about her is her bravery. I can tell from the way she acts in class that she will survive this, and that she will become a great hero one day."
"Thank you, ma'am."
He hangs up
A few days later, Yangchen was discharged from the hospital. She was still too weak to actually walk yet since at the moment she was kind of shaky, so for now she was getting around with a wheelchair. Yamada-sensei helped me bring her to the apartment where Aizawa-san was waiting for us, still bandaged like a mummy. Yangchen was elated to see him again, even if he couldn't really move yet.
The next few days I stayed home from school to help Yangchen regain her motor skills. It was easier than I thought it would be. She'd have to go to physical therapy for at least a month, three times a week, but she was getting the hang of walking again after being hospitalized for so long.
I caught up with my work at night. I couldn't sleep anyway.
The night before Aizawa-san and Yangchen were scheduled for their first day back, Yamada-sensei stayed the night. He told me to call him Yama when we were outside of school, but I thought that was too informal, so I just stuck to Yamada-san.
In the morning he made us breakfast and walked with us to school. At the front door, he parted with us with a loud "HAVE A NICE DAY LITTLE LISTENERS!"
Like he wasn't going to see us for English class in a few hours anyway.
Aizawa-san went ahead to the teacher's lounge, so I helped Yangchen to the classroom. She was still stumbling a bit so I helped her by carrying her bag.
She stopped at the front door. I looked at her questioningly. "Something the matter?"
She just shook her head. "I need a second."
I didn't blame her for trying to grace herself. Knowing our classmates, they'd be extremely loud when she entered after so much time.
After she was ready, I tentatively opened the door. "Hi guys-"
"Yangchen, welcome back!"
All faces in the room besides Bakugou lit up and there were various exclamations of joy. She looked quite shocked and ducked her head. I bit back a chuckle.
Once we were in our seats and multiple people had gone to Yangchen asking if she was alright (her awkward expression was hilarious) the door opened yet again.
Revealing Aizawa-san, still dressed up as a mummy.
There were various exclamations at the sight as well. "Aizawa-sensei, should you really be here? I mean…" Kaminari trailed off.
Aizawa-san glared at him. "Something like this won't kill me. Anyway," He put a hand on the table. "We need to address the newest issue on the table. The fight is not over yet."
Everyone tensed.
More villains? An exam? The replacement for Mineta?
"The UA Sports Festival is right around the corner."
Oh good.
The room buzzed with excitement as people realized the scale of it all. The U.A Sports Festival wasn't any ordinary Sports Festival like Koda had thought before we explained it.
There would be scouts, looking for promising hero candidates. They'd also be watching the General Studies kids and the Support Group. People from those classes could also be transferred to the hero course if they did well enough.
It was quite possibly the biggest event of the year.
Scratch that, it probably was.
"Let's go kick some ass!"
"Shut up!" Kaminari slapped Kirishima.
"Is it really a good idea to hold such a big event right after we just got attacked? They could attack us all at once," Yaoyorozu mused.
"Apparently the school wants to show that 'the situation is under control' and 'something like this will not throw us off balance' or some other blabber," Aizawa-san was clearly not happy with it. "Apparently they're beefing up security too. The Sports Festival is an incredibly important opportunity for you guys. It's your chance to show off your quirks and get noticed by big agencies."
"Why can't we just cancel it?" Mina moaned. "It's just a sports festival!"
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity ," Aizawa-san corrected. "In the past, people watched the Olympics. And then quirks became a thing and the olympics have almost disappeared. For all the hungry fans craving competition, the UA Sports Festival is the place to look."
He reached for his sleeping bag. "Keeping this in mind, homeroom is dismissed. Don't do anything crazy."
He then fell asleep.
We didn't get a chance to talk though because Yamada-sensei immediately burst through the door. "HELLO LITTLE LISTENERS! AND WELCOME BACK, YANGCHEN!"
"Class dismissed."
The lunch bell rang.
Everyone gathered their books and began to mingle around the classroom. Some went straight to the cafeteria, while Yangchen and I stayed in the classroom to talk with our friends. More like I do the talking, Yangchen does the staring at the ground.
"So, how about that? We're off to the sports festival." Kirishima said.
"The scouts guys, the scouts! We've got to get noticed!" Kaminari exclaimed empathetically.
"LET'S DO OUR BEST!"
The scream shook the room, mostly because it was Uraraka of all people who was screaming.
"Umm…"
"I SAID LET'S DO OUR BEST!"
People began to cheer in confusion. Uraraka was really hyped for this.
"Uraraka, you want to help support your parents by being a hero, right?" Iida questioned, hand moving in its signature chopping motion. "A noble choice indeed!"
Uraraka nodded, and with her current expression, she just looked so ironically intimidating. I started giggling.
"Yangchen and I are going to head down to the cafeteria now," I informed the others. "Do you guys want to join us?"
"Sure!"
Iida, Uraraka, Midoriya, Yangchen and I all walked out the door together. We were bantering in the halls when we were stopped by All Might.
"YOUNG MIDORIYA!"
We jumped at the sudden surprise.
And all of a sudden he looked a lot less intimidating, crouched behind the wall. "You wanna eat together?"
I couldn't help the snort that left me. Yangchen twitched too.
"Uh, sure…" Midoriya sounded so startled and unsure it took all my power to not laugh in front of the #1 Pro Hero again. "See you guys later, I guess."
Midoriya wandered off with All Might as the rest of us continued on down the hall.
"I wonder what All Might wanted…" Uraraka trailed off as she thought.
"I mean, he's always favored Midoriya," I said. Yangchen nodded in agreement. I mean, there was the time during the USJ attack when Aizawa-san and Thirteen were communicating something about All Might and Midoriya…
Understood…
Wait…
I suddenly coughed, my throat going dry. "Sorry guys," I tried to ignore their looks of concern. "Just...gimme a sec-"
With that I dashed off to find Midoriya.
"Why can't we just go with The Outcasts?"
"I like that one."
"NOO GUYS DON'T LISTEN TO HIM!"
"Oh shut up!"
We were trying to find a good name for a vigilante group when Shun suggested that. I liked it but Hiro had some problems.
"If you hate it that much," Yuki-chan huffed. "Why don't you make a vigilante name?"
That made Hiro pause for a minute. "...Well, can we pick individual names first…?"
We had a good laugh at that before deciding that individual names would probably be easier to make than a group name. "I think Imma go with Senseless."
Maki-chan wrinkled her nose. "That's an odd name...but it suits you."
"Cool. What should I be…" Shun trailed off in thought. "How about Spring? Since my legs are literal springs?"
"Isn't that too literal?" Yuki-chan asked.
"Nope and I like it, so deal with it."
"Fine," Yuki-chan sighed exasperatedly. "I'm not gonna be fighting with you guys so I don't think I need a name, but if you need to refer to me during a battle or something, call me Snowflake."
"Great, two people with very literal names," Hiro groaned. "Might as well make mine something abstract."
"Oh, by the way, I'm going with Waterfall," Maki-chan interjected.
Hiro leaned back against the wall. "Your names go directly with your quirks, and I don't want that," He said. "So...what about Musco?"
"Musco?" Confusion was evident in my voice. "Where'd that come from?"
"It's something from when I was younger," Hiro explained. "I...don't want to explain it…"
"No, no, it's fine!" I quickly backtracked. "So, Musco it is!"
"Yep."
"Now for the group name."
"Way to ruin the mood, Shun."
We sat in thought for a few moments longer before Shun spoke up. "I still like The Outcasts."
"Shun!"
"But," Shun started again abruptly. "I want Hiro to be the leader of this, and his name should be in the title."
"Wait what?" Maki tilted her head. "But you're the most responsible!"
Shun sighed. "But Hiro protects us."
"Bro, I'm honored, but-"
"Wait, lemme tell the story," Shun cut him off. "So when we were children, my quirk came in one day, obviously. It was at school. It really hurt since my legs were transforming into literal springs. Everyone was scared of it and ran away- but Hiro stayed. I didn't even know him, and he stayed."
"Bro…" Hiro's voice got choked. "I didn't know you thought it was so amazing, I was just being a decent human being."
"Exactly." Shun said it with conviction. "It is really hard to find decent human beings these days, and Hiro is one of them. So I want him to be the leader."
I bumped Hiro in the shoulder. "I don't believe it."
"Oh shut up," He glared at me playfully.
"So if the group has to be named after Hiro, what about the Musco Mafia?" Yuki-chan proposed.
"Nah, alliteration."
"Okay, but what about the Musco Fafia ?"
I looked at Hiro like he was crazy. "You changed one letter . "
"And it sounds great!" He protested.
"Actually, I like that idea."
"Yeah, me too!"
"You guys!" I whined as everyone voiced their support.
"So Musco Fafia it is?"
I just exhaled in defeat. "...Fine. We're telling the others about this though."
"Yeah, of course!"
In retrospect, looking for Midoriya wasn't the best idea. I mean, what was I going to do? Drag him away from All Might to tell him that I eavesdropped on him that day and risk losing his trust?
I realized the stupidity of my impulse a bit too late and I was already pretty far from the cafeteria. Well, it wouldn't hurt to make a stop to the bathroom. My concealer was probably coming off by that point so I could just put on a new layer.
Now, where was the bathroom again?
Oh yeah, behind me-
Thump.
I had turned and dashed backwards only to run into a person I wasn't planning on talking to today.
"To-Todoroki!?"
He seemed surprised- I mean, he had just entered the hallway and I had slammed straight into him. Without saying a word, he offered his hand to me, which I gratefully accepted, when-
Out clattered the same tub of makeup from my bag I was planning on using in the bathroom.
"Frick."
Aside from a slight squint, Todoroki showed no emotion while I was internally panicking.
"Are you okay?"
I hastily shoved the tiny tube into my bag and took his hand to get up.
"I'm alright," I laughed to try to make myself seem unfazed.
"Why do you have makeup in your bag?"
Shoot.
"Why do you know that it's makeup?" I countered his question with one of my own.
"I have an older sister."
Well crappety crap. There's no way around this.
"It's for, uh, touch ups during the day." I crossed my fingers hoping that he'd believe me.
He stared at me for a second before walking away. I only relaxed when I couldn't hear his footsteps anymore.
That could have ended very badly.
I knew that Todoroki most likely wouldn't out my secret, but you could never be too careful with him. The boy was an absolute mystery. All I knew about him was that he was crazy strong and someone hurt him so badly that he had become completely closed to the world.
Some people just came like that, but more often than not, it was due to outside circumstances. As I walked down the hall, a random image surfaced in my mind.
A boy with spiky black hair, curled up in the corner, sobbing.
But as soon as it came, it disappeared.
Huh?
I didn't have time to ponder it because I arrived in the cafeteria shortly after and took my seat with my food.
"Hey, what happened?" Uraraka asked once I arrived at their table.
I shrugged. "Forgot about something. Anyway, what's up?"
"Ah, we were just conversing about the upcoming U.A Sports Festival!" Iida answered.
"Cool! So, what do you guys think about the sports festival?" I asked.
"I personally believe that it is a great opportunity. I believe that after the festival are our internships with pro agencies, so this is a great way to get noticed!" Iida's response was logical, as usual.
Yangchen spoke up. "I hope my brother watches it…"
"Oh, I didn't know you had a brother!" Uraraka piped from across the table. "Is he older or younger?"
"Actually, he's my twin," Yangchen answered
"Maybe you'll win it and he'll see you!"
"With people like Totorokkun, Sparky Sparky Boom Boy, and Dekkun, I don' stand a chance," Yangchen sighed, taking a bite of rice with her new, elongated chopsticks her parents sent her a few days ago.
"Of course you have a chance!" I reassured her. "There's probably some way to beat Todoroki and Bakugou!"
"You really think that?"
"We all do!" Uraraka spoke.
"That reminds me," Yangchen put down her chopsticks. "Why do you think All Might had to talk to Midoriya?"
"They have very similar quirks. And no, there's no way to beat me," A familiar voice said, causing me to choke on my water.
Todoroki had appeared at Uraraka's right, holding a tray of food and staring blankly. I guess he was sitting with us today. He raised an eyebrow. "Are you alright?"
My face heated up as I coughed a bit more. "Just peachy," I rasped out before reaching for the water.
He did not look convinced but continued speaking anyway. "All Might could want to train Midoriya because they have such similar quirks. He could see the utility in Midoriya and want to help cultivate it."
Todoroki slid into the seat next to me. I eyed him suspiciously. "Are you sure there's no way to beat you?"
"There is absolutely no way to beat me."
"Not even with someone like Bakuogu's quirk?" I prodded further.
"No. Bakugou could never beat me, not with his attitude."
Okay, this kid was really pissing me off. He was talking like he was some god or something when he was a student, just like everyone else. That's why he was here in the first place. If he was unbeatable, he should just go fight All Might while he's at it.
But I settled for a simple, "That's kind of arrogant, you know."
"I'm not being arrogant," He eyed me. "I'm being honest. There is no way to beat me."
That put a damper in my anger for one reason- his tone. He said it, not like he believed it, but like it was a simple fact. A fact that had been drilled into his head and he was forced to accept.
Who does that?
"Not even with someone as smart as Yangchen?" Iida asked while I remained quiet.
"Or as fast as Iida?" Uraraka said while Iida sputtered.
"No," Todoroki shook his head. "Nobody in this school has the ability to beat me."
Oh, but you don't know that a perfect person doesn't exist, I thought to myself as lunch continued. Everyone can be beaten one way or another, and trust me, Todoroki Shoto, I will find your weakness and beat you with it.
Different POV
"Woah…"
A blue flame danced on his palm. I stretched out a hand to it but he caught it immediately. "That's not a good idea."
I pouted. "Why?"
He smiled, red hair waving in the wind. "See how this is blue?"
"Yeah…"
"That means it's hotter than regular fire."
"Woah," I exhaled, looking at the azure licks of fire dance on his open palm. "Touya-nii, you're so cool!"
He chuckled and brought a hand to my hair, ruffling it. "Glad you think so, Shou." He extinguished the flame in the other hand. "The fire is pretty, but it can burn too. Look."
I followed his gaze to see the skin of his palm starting to blister. I gasped at the sight, and before I could register what I was doing, I took his hand in my smaller ones, I tried to put a small amount of frost on my right hand but ended up making it a block of ice.
Touya-nii just laughed. "Thanks, Shou."
I beamed at him. His expression suddenly turned soft. "Promise me that you won't become like our father."
I made a noncommittal noise of confusion. "Why would I want to be like him! He hits Mom and Fuyu-nee and Natsu-nii and Touya-nii!"
He just ruffled my hair again. "I know. You're so different from him. Promise me it'll stay like that?"
I stood up, grasping his burnt hand tighter. "Pinky-promise!"
He grinned at me and patted my head, standing up. I sat down on the grass, in the courtyard, watching him go.
That was the last time I ever saw Touya-nii.
