History: Gustov Zucco (last name taken from his surrogate family) is a traveling mercenary going by the name of the Black Swordsman. He was taken from his birth family (currently unknown) and trained to be an assassin. After being hired (and secretly adopted by) the Zucco family, he learned how it felt like to be loved, and thus became a lot more compassionate going forward. He is known for being an excellent bodyguard, he rarely fails to protect a client. He is most known for slaughtering 100 men on , earning the reputation of a merciless killer. REVOCS has pulled a few strings (hehehehe) and COVERed up the truth, that he had killed those men in self defense. In reality, the Black Swordsman rarely kills his opponents, only doing it when he deems it absolutely necessary.
Personality: Gus is rather stoic, he rarely speaks to people unless he is asked to. This isn't because people aren't worth talking to, he's just really awkward. He is actually rather kind, he has a habit for random acts of kindness, such as buying a kid ice cream or helping an old lady cross the street. He has a soft side to him that people rarely see, and it is frequently ignored. Unlike his ancestor, Guts, Gus detests killing and tries to spare his opponents as much as possible. However, he will execute someone without hesitation if he considers them dangerous or irredeemable. The Berserker armor only increases his negative traits, his anger issues are increased to the extent that he tried to kill Ryuko over a minor disagreement under it's influence, someone who he normally has quite a bit of respect for. He is easy to anger without the armor, but he usually keeps things from getting physical. He is blunt when it comes to words, he will tell things as they are, even if it might hurt someone's feelings.
Relationships:
Ryuko Matoi: Gus has a lot of respect for Ryuko. He admires her tenacity, and after their brief fight he considers her his closest friend. Ryuko initially distrusted Gus due to his profession, believing that he was only motivated by money and thus he would betray her for a better offer, but after she was briefed on Gus' history by Skull Knight, she recognized that he has a very hard life, and she has become determined to break him out of his shell.
Mako Mankanshoku: Gus has a soft spot for Mako, he is both perplexed and amused by her way of thinking. He has grown to care for her a lot, but he has yet to open up to her.
Skull Knight: Gus sees Skull Knight as a mentor, and he really enjoys learning about Guts through Skull Knight's teachings. Together, they came up with the plan to seize the crimson behelit from Ragyo Kiryuin, and Skull Knight's teachings are the only way Gus can control the Berserker armor.
The Zucco Family: Gus loved them, very much. They taught him love and compassion, something that Ares neglected to teach. He is traumatized by their deaths, Sofie's death in particular was rather scarring due to his failure to save her. He took their last name in order to honor them for everything they did for him. Interestingly, he actually received his sword from , who called it Dragonslayer, and apparently it was a family heirloom...
Satsuki Kiryuin: He doesn't like her at all. It has nothing to do with her being Ragyo's daughter, but rather that she is apparently loyal to Ragyo. Obviously, his current view of her will change.
Ragyo Kiryuin: He despises her with every fiber of his being, as she was the one who ordered the death of the Zucco family, and she was Ares' employer. She isvery high on his list of people to kill.
Ares Costello: There is no one who Gus hates more than Ares. Ares had always been a terrifying figure to Gus when he was a child, he attempted to raise Gus to be a killer, and would mercilessly beat Gus when he showed any signs of sentiment. His murder of Sofie Zucco was the last straw, and Gus fought him to the death. He lost an arm, but Ares post his life. Still, Gus is haunted by the mere memory of his nemesis, he frequently has nightmares about either Ares killing Sofie, or Ares' one-eyed corpse coming back for revenge.
The Lagoon Company: That's right Black Lagoon fans, it's canon in this universe. However, the Lagoon Company won't likely appear in this story, but they may be mentioned. Gus has some experience dealing with these pirates, he's had to work with them on several occasions. The only person that Gus respects on the crew is Rock, as Gus considers anyone who can hold onto their ideals while working with "murderous psychopathic assholes" a strong individual. They are currently his enemies, because he went behind their backs and arrested Ms. Balilaka, and as a result of betraying them to get at one of their employers, Revy promised to shoot him on sight. The only person who knew about this was Rock, because Gus had told him the night before, as didn't want to betray Rock's trust. Rock kept quiet about it and let Gus do his job.
Nosferatu Zodd: Gus considers Zodd to be the toughest opponent he will ever have to face. After learning about his ancestor's battles with the immortal apostle, Gus is determined to overcome his biggest obstacle yet. Zodd thinks Gus is Guts. He believes that Gus is the exact same as his predecessor, and thus he is expecting an even fight. After centuries of boredom following Guts' death, his upcoming duel with Gus has reinvigorated the proud warrior. Will Gus defeat Zodd? Or will he never measure up to Guts?
