Draco was fuming the next morning at breakfast when he saw Harry and Ron were still at Hogwarts, looking tired but cheerful.
"They didn't get in trouble?" He hissed as he watched them take their seats.
"Maybe they didn't get caught." Jade pointed out as she ate a spoonful of oatmeal.
"Filch is useless." Draco grumbled as he violently swung back around and angrily ate his food. Jade didn't understand why Draco picked on Harry, he told her it was because Harry thought he was better than everybody else but Jade hadn't seen Harry act that way. He also had a problem with Harry being friends with the Weasleys just because their father didn't hate muggles like his father did. Draco irritated Jade sometimes, she didn't even know if they were technically friends. As the owls flooded into the Great Hall, Jade noticed a long, thin package carried by six large screech owls. Everyone else was looking up at the package waiting to see who it would be delivered to. The owls dropped it right in front of Harry and Draco turned in disgust of the whole cafeteria watching him and giving him their attention. Jade waited for Harry to open his package but he didn't, instead, he exchanged looks with Ron and they both hurried out of the hall with the wrapped package. "I wonder what he's got there." Draco nodded towards Crabbe and Goyle as he rose from his seat, both rose to follow Draco but Jade stood up and put a hand on Crabbe's shoulder to signal him to stay and he slowly shrank back down to his seat. Jade went with Goyle and quickly caught up with Draco, he did a double take when he saw Jade there instead of Crabbe. Before Draco could say anything, Harry and Ron came into the entrance hall. Draco quickly seized the package from Harry and felt it. "That's a broomstick," he said, throwing it back to Harry, Jade could sense some jealousy from Draco but then he smirked. "You'll be in for it this time, Potter, first years aren't allowed them."
"It's not any old broomstick," Ron said, "it's a Nimbus Two Thousand. What did you say you've got at home, Malfoy, a Comet Two Sixty?" Ron grinned at Harry. "Comets look flashy, but they're not in the same league as the Nimbus."
"What would you know about it, Weasley, you couldn't afford half the handle," Draco snapped back. "I suppose you and your brothers have to save up twig by twig." Ron had taken a step forward and opened his mouth to speak but Professor Flitwick appeared at Draco's elbow.
"Not arguing, I hope, boys?" he squeaked.
"Potter's been sent a broomstick, Professor," said Draco quickly.
"Yes, yes, that's right," said Professor Flitwick, beaming at Harry. "Professor McGonagall told me all about the special circumstances, Potter. And what model is it?" Draco's face quickly fell when he realized that Harry wouldn't be getting in trouble,
"A Nimbus Two Thousand, sir," said Harry with a small smile on his face, "And it's really thanks to Malfoy here that I've got it," he added as he looked at Draco. Draco had curled his hands into fists and Jade stepped towards him, Harry and Ron headed upstairs, barely containing their laughter at Draco's face.
"He gets away with everything." Draco fumed and Jade and Goyle exchanged a look and Jade took a step forward and gently placed a hand on Draco's shoulder. Draco yanked his shoulder out of her grasp, "Apparently, rules don't apply to Potter!" He spoke loudly and Jade watched him, she understood, she didn't think the favoritism towards Potter was fair either. "Walking around with his head high because people made him believe he was the biggest celebrity since Merlin." Draco had started walking now and Jade and Goyle followed him quietly. Jade decided that, yes, she was Draco's friend. No one else would put up with all of the trash talking that he did about Harry Potter. He talked the whole way back to the Common Room and then went to the boys' dormitory without saying a word to Jade or Goyle.
"Jeez, he's so angry." Jade watched where Draco had disappeared,
"Wouldn't you be? If you offered someone your friendship and they rejected you for a Weasley and then flaunted themselves in your face."
"If I had what?" She asked,
"Malfoy wanted to be Potter's friend and Potter said no." He clarified and Jade just stood there, she didn't know that that was the reason why Draco was always jumping at the chance to argue with Harry and Ron. "He'll calm down soon. I'm gonna go talk to him." Jade nodded at Goyle and he went after Draco. She doubted Goyle would actually speak a word but he'd listen to Draco rant. Everyone else was still at breakfast, Jade didn't feel like going back to the Great Hall so she went to her bed and grabbed her Transfiguration essay that was due next week and started working on it. She thought about writing a letter home to her parents but decided against it, when she had told them that Draco Malfoy was one of her friends and that she had been sorted into Slytherin, they had told her to be careful being a friend of Draco's given his family's history and that there 'had to be some honorable reason why' she was put in Slytherin. She expected her parents to be happy for her, but they had been underwhelmed. Jade tried to not let it get to her but it upset her, they had talked about how happy they were that Rodrick had been a Gryffindor like their father. Rodrick was the golden boy and was a great quidditch player but Jade made it her goal to be the smart one, getting all good marks in her classes. She'd perfect her spells, master crafting potions, find her inner focus to help her in Transfiguration, she could hear her mother now,
"My daughter was top of her class, out of hundreds of new students, my daughter was better than them all." She didn't feel that being a Slytherin was a bad thing, she'd prove that to her parents, to her teachers, and to the other houses.
