Hermione was sitting in the library with Luna. Slytherin would announce who they were choosing at dinner tonight but for now she wanted a quiet place where no one would be talking about quidditch and the only place that came to mind was the library. Luna had joined her to do research on some magical creatures.
The usual quiet library was loud because the one and only Victor Krum was there and all his fangirls and fanboys were there watching him. They followed him everywhere he went. Victor was a couple of tables away from Hermione and Luna but he kept stealing glances at Hermione. He had been doing this since he had put his name in the goblet of fire.
Victor was interested in Hermione because she wasn't like any other girl he had met. She didn't follow him around or try to get his attention. She didn't even look his way when he walked past. She interested him. He had been trying to ask her out on a date but she said no. He didn't think she realized what she did but he wasn't giving up. With the yule ball coming up he was determined to ask her. Just not yet.
He had only had one conversation with her and that was when he had attempted to ask her to lunch. Maybe if he talked to her more she would be more inclined to say yes to a date but he couldn't do that with all these girls following him. He would have to find another way. Victor got up and left. He was going to find out what she liked and figure out a way to get her alone for a while.
When Victor left all the girls and some guys followed him out causing Hermione to breathe in relife. She didn't understand why people were so obsessed with him. Just because he's a quidditch player doesn't mean you have to treat him like he's a god. People's minds never did make sense to Hermione though she would never admit it.
"Hey Mione. Who do you think Slytherin will choose?"
"I'm not sure Lu. Doesn't it seem weird to you that they made a bet like that."
"Yeah but do you think that they'll choose you. I mean they have been being nice to you and protecting you against Gryffindor."
Hermione froze in shock and realization. How could she have been so dumb not to see what they were doing. "I guess you're right Luna but how did you know about me befriending them?"
"You've been happier the last few weeks and I've seen the looks they give you. They've stopped bullying you all together and they've been protecting you against Gryffindor like I said. You should have seen what happened yesterday. Ron tried to talk bad about you and Nott hexed him right then and there. He got detention but made it clear that you aren't to be picked on unless they want to deal with Slytherin. Everyone in that house has seemed to take a liking to you."
"I guess you're right. How I didn't notice is beyond me but I want you to remember we will always be friends Lu. You were my first real friend and I want you to know that you are the sister I never had. I will always have your back."
Luna gave Hermione a watery smile and they shared a hug where Luna whispered "thanks Hermione. The same applies to you." and the girls had a heart to heart conversation. Hermione couldn't remember the last time she ever felt this happy or if she was ever this happy.
Dinner came quickly to Hermione and Luna who had spent the day enjoying themselves. As they made their way down to dinner Hermione noticed that Luna was right. All Slytherin's were being nice to her. Some were even waving to her or smiling to her in the hallways. Hermione and Luna had separated and gone to their houses.
Hermione in between Harry and Ginny much to her displeasure. Ginny had grabbed her arm and roughly pulled her in between the two of them and even worse across from her was Ron.
"Hermione" Ron winded "where have you been?"
"Sorry Ron I was in the library with Lu. We were catching up on a few things. Did you need something?"
"Hermione. You don't mean Lovegood do you?"
"Yeah Lu and I are friends. Don't act surprised. You know we've been friends for a while and don't you dare call her names or insult her. She's my friend."
"Hermione. You do realize that sh…"
"Don't even finish that sentence Harry James Potter. You will not say anything bad about her. Do you understand me. I let you push me around and do whatever you guys want but this is one of the few things that I will not let you get away with. Now that we are clear can we enjoy dinner?"
"I wish but not with Slytherin winning. It's all everyone has been talking about. Who do you think they'll pick?"
"They're going to pick me Ginny. I'm the chosen one and the boy who lived. I'm also the fourth triwizard champion. Why can't we ever have a normal year."
"Doumbledore would never allow them to hurt you Harry. Just relax and take a bit of food. They might take one of the first years and put them against us. You never know with those snakes."
"I don't think so Ron. They wouldn't have a use for a first year. Slytherin would want to take someone from Gryffindor that benefits them and hurts us. Well just have to wait and see what happens."
The rest of dinner the four spent in almost silence. Few words exchanged. At the end of dinner Professor Doumbledore gathered everyone's attention.
"Now that we've had dinner it is time to announce who Slytherin has chosen. This is the first time in a long time that something like this has happened. Now they will be transferred tomorrow morning so that they can spend their last night with their friends and pack everything that they will need. Now I hope that everything is in order. Who is Slytherin choosing?"
Adrian Puecy stood up from his spot and walked to the front. The smirk on his face or the confident strode. The stood with his chest puffed out and a smirk embedded on his face looking like someone who just made the greatest deal of his life. "Professor we will be taking Hermione Granger" and with that he walked back to his spot.
This everyone took everyone off guard but it didn't take long for Gryffindor to voice their disapproval. They were going to lose the brightest witch of their age. How were they supposed to do their homework without her. They were going to fail and people would start to notice. What would happen if people found out about how they treated her. They would be ruined. Gryffindor became enraged that they would take her away.
"SILENCE! Now I understand this isn't what you wanted but these are the rules and I am afraid I cannot change them. Now then Miss Granger in the morning you will report to Professor Snape to get your new robes, schedule and rules that follow. He will also show you around the Slytherin common room and dorms. Since tomorrow is Sunday you don't have classes tomorrow so get settled in and meet your new housemates. You may come to me if there are any problems. Everyone, let's enjoy the desert."
Desert replaced the food and soon everyone was eating what they could. Hermione ignored the looks she was getting and put some pie on her plate and tired to eat silently but Ron had other ideas.
"Hermione, how can you be so calm about this. You'll be living with snakes Hermione. SNAKES!"
"And what would you want me to do Ronald. You're the one that made the bet in the first place and it's not like they're going to kill me. Plus you'll still see me in class."
"That's not the paint Hermione. When I made the bet I didn't know that they were going to be buying new brooms. They were so scared of losing that Malfoy had to run to his mommy and daddy. Look, they're sitting at the teachers table." Ron said while pointing over at the teachers table and he was right. Both Mr and Mrs Malfoy were sitting there talking to Professor Snape.
Hermione could have sworn she caught their eyes and both Malfoy's made smiled at her but Ginny blocked her view before she could really tell forcing Hermione to turn back to her food.
At the teachers table both Malfoy smiled at Hermione when he made eye contact but lost it when the Sheweasl blocked her view and forced her attention back to them. The smile turned into a frown. Now looking at her they both felt a connection and had no doubt that Severus was right. They hoped that one day they could recover her memories.
"Severus. If you can I want you to get some of her blood. I want to see for myself and do a family tree potion. That way I have proof so that at the end of the year she can stay with someone else instead of that filth."
"Yes I understand and will try my best. I first have to earn her complete trust just like the rest of Slytherin. I have no doubt in my mind you two are going to send her things and spoil her rotten. Just don't put your names for now. Only initials."
"Yes. Yes. I know Severus but I just want to go up to her and hold her and tell her she is loved. She was just a child. If word got out about what he has done no one would believe it or if they did they wouldn't have done anything about it. Is there anything we need to get her instantly?"
"If it makes the two of you feel better there are some things you can get her and there are a few things she might want but can't get because of her 'parents'."
"That would be great Severus. What does she need and want?"
"Well from the looks of it she could use new robes. Getting rid of those Gryffindor robes and getting the high end new Slytherin ones. She will also need clothes and pj's. I don't know what she has but from the few times I've seen her they have holes in them and are tearing or old. She loves to read so books are always a great gift. I will be teaching her and helping her accomplish her potions mastery and knowing her she'll be learning advanced spells along with it. Paying for school supplies and clothes should be in for now. I'll send another letter later on in the week about what she likes and dislikes so you can decide on what your next step is."
"We'll have everything by tomorrow. We'll need her measurements for the clothes and robes but we should be able to get things that fit her. I've heard from Draco she's more into men's clothes than woman's."
"Yes and I'll make sure to pick up lots of potions books and ingredients as well as some other advanced books on other subjects as well. We hope to hear from you weakly. We will be doing everything we can to protect her. She is family after all."
The three adults continued to talk though dinner and soon it was time for everyone to go back to their common rooms and head off to bed. Hermione managed to sneak away to the room of requirement since all her belongings were in there. She packed everything and layed it beside her before falling into a dreamless sleep.
In the morning Hermione rolled out of bed. She was nervous as she picked up her belongings and made her way towards Professor Snape's office. She was no longer a Gryffindor. She was a Slytherin. It had to be the crack of dawn because no one else was awake but Hermione was glad. No one out to give her weird looks or glare at her. She was wearing her a pair of black jeans and a light gray button up shirt. White sneakers. She would love the outfit if it actually fit her. Since she had been starved so much she lost weight so the shirt and jeans looked big on her.
She turned the corner just before the potions teachers office and both Malfoy were standing outside the door to Snape's office. Hermione quickly hid behind a pillar and waited for them to move. Hermione waited about 15 minutes and the Malfoy's were still standing there. Hermione gathered all her courage to walk when she felt something heading towards her at a fast speed.
She turned around ready to defend herself when a shield of water blocked it. Hermione once again saw that water was surrounding her and she felt more powerful when it did. She must have caused a ruckus because three shadows stood over her. Hermione turned to look at them when she saw that the Malfoy's looked shocked and ready to cry. It became more apparent when they made eye contact with her. Snape was also there but looked only slightly shocked at the water.
Hermione stood there awkwardly waiting for someone to say something and to her luck Professor McGonagall had come round to see how things were going.
"Miss Granger, I see you're up early as usual. I hope Slytherin helps you on your way to achieving greatness. If you need anything from me don't hesitate to ask." she said and walked right on by. This seemed to snap everyone back to reality.
"Miss Granger. Thank you for coming down so early. I know this must be a major change for you. Now let me measure you so we can get you some Slytherin robes fit to your needs. I don't want some transfused Gryffindor robes. Now come inside my office and we will discuss the changes." Snape said, then motioned for her to come inside.
Hermione walked inside awkwardly. She could feel both elder Malfoy's gaze on her. Out of the corner of her eyes she noticed a tape measure flying around her trying to take her measurements. She held her arms out and allowed it to measure her before she sat down and waited for the potions teacher.
After a few minutes Snape walked in the room while the Malfoy's took their leave to diagon alley. They said they would have everything delivered by lunch.
"Miss Granger. Here is your new class schedule. You should have all the same classes but at different times to allow you to sit with your housemates. We still have some of the same rules as sitting with your house during meals and classes. Be back in the dormitory by 9 pm but we don't have a specific bed time. You can stay up as long as you want but I better see you in class the next day. The difference between our house and the other three is we Slytherin's stick together. You will find that Slytherin's are treated differently than others. Watch your back. Always have at least one other Slytherin with you or it's recommended that you do but it's your choice. Any questions so far?"
Hermione shook her head no and Severus continued "The dorms are separated by gender and year. Each year has a separate common room to their specific year and yes there is a bigger common room for all years. When doing homework or relaxing people find it better to do with less people. The earliest for your new clothes and books to arrive is lunch time today and the latest is by tonight possibly tomorrow morning. Now follow me. It's time I take you to get you settled in."
Hermione followed him making sure to walk a few feet behind him. Her heads were sweating at this point and her breathing was uneven. She was taking deep breaths trying to calm herself down without anyone noticing her struggling. They came to a stop and Hermione knew this was it. She was officially a Slytherin. As it set in, Hermione's nerves calmed down. As it actually set in this felt right to Hermione. Like she belonged in this house. Maybe because she was a heir but maybe she could do this. Maybe this would lead to happiness.
"Miss Granger this is the way into the shared common room." he said. Hermione looked and saw a plain wall that was now showing a door with a portrait on it. "The door will only show itself to a member of Slytherin or a close friend to a member of our house. This is Salazar Slytherin as you probably already recognize him. He usually hangs out in the common rooms or outside in this portrait."
"Ah yes. Severus has told me about us getting a new student but your special. I can feel your magic. You're an heir to Slytherin. My own blood. It's nice to see that you are finally where you are supposed to be. Now since you are an heir I will have your private quartiers set up. Do not worry you will still be connected to your friends but you'll have your own private bedroom, bath, small kitchen and sitting space. Do what you will with it."
Hermione looked to the potions teacher but he just nodded at Salazar then turned to her "you will have three passwords to remember. The one to get into the main common room, the one to get into your year's common room, and the last one being to get into your private quarters. You will choose your own password for your room but the other two have already been chosen and they changed every week. This week's password is pureblood and the other password is Gryffindor's stink. Let me know if you have any questions and tell me when you have chosen your own password. I have other things to attend to so I will see you later Miss Granger." he said as he left
Hermione looked at the portrait and Salazar gave her a smile and motioned for her to go inside. She smiled back as she walked into what people called the snakes pit.
