It was a month before Lyni was allowed to move out of the brig and into quarters. Wolffe's realization that Lyni was a victim had helped him warm up to her in the intervening time. It also helped make the fact that they were mates according to the laws of Dathomir more acceptable.
That was until Wolffe saw that Koon had assigned his Commander and Lyni to the same quarters. When Wolffe asked about this through gritted teeth, the Jedi explained how it was practical. Lyni had no position in the Republic and since only a visiting Jedi, Commander, Official could get quarters it make sense for Lyni to share Wolffe's. Besides, it would help with the guard schedule that Wolffe wanted to keep up more for Lyni's protection than anything.
{Great} Wolffe thought as he approached the mentioned quarters. He hesitated outside of the doors, not sure what he would find inside. Lyni was convinced that she was supposed to be his slave. Yes, they had become more comfortable in the brig, but this was different.
Deciding to prove the slavery idea wrong, he rang the bell. In response the door slip open, into a pitch black room. He double checked the door number. It as right. Remembering Lyni's complaints about the brig being too bright he spoke, "Lyni, can I come in?"
"Yes Commander." Her voice came from the darkness. Taking a step inside he allowed the door to slide shut behind him. "If we are rooming together, we will have to discuss lighting," he said a little gruffly. Not because he was nervous, but because rules had to be set.
A startled response of, "Oh!" then the lights came back on. Only every other, but he noticed that she kept her eyes covered longer than he did. When she raised her head she asked, "Is that better?"
"Yes, thank you." She smiled and stood in the doorway across from him. It was a tense, awkward moment of looking at each other across a room that contained a table, couch, and a few chairs. She was standing in the doorway of the bedroom. Wolffe swallowed, "Shall we sit down?"
She went to the seat closest to her and sat. "What do you want to discuss Commander?"
Wolffe spoke as he sat down, "Why do you always call me Commander?"
Lyni ducked her head, "You do not wish for me to call you mate. And I do not know what else you would prefer."
He nodded. That made sense, "Commander works for the outside and ships business. But I think you can call me by my name when were alone."
"Yes Com…" she stopped herself, "Wolffe. If you prefer it."
A slight twitch of his lips, "I do." Looking around, "We are going to be here, so there's not much room for anything."
The girl spoke up, "I am perfectly comfortable on the floor."
He shook his head, "I sleep weird hours. I can adjust."
A nod of acceptance. After about a minute of silence, "Wolffe?"
He looked up from his gloves, "Yes Lyni?"
She spoke shyly, "Is there anyway I can help?"
Studying her, "What do you mean?"
A swallow, "In the village I brought the brothers water at midday in the fields. And I gathered plants for the healer." Looking at him again, "Is there a way I can help you?"
Payback seemed to be okay with her. Besides they were down a medic until the Senate and the Kamodians got themselves straitened out. He nodded, "Some of the medical personnel were killed in the fighting recently. So you can help Payback in the medbay."
She smiled brightly. Then it faded, "They wouldn't hate me?" He looked puzzled, "I am a Dathmarian female like Ventress and I have spent time with Maul and Savage Oppress. None of whom are popular among the Republic."
That was a problem he had forgotten. "We will work something out Lyni."
She shook her head, "No, you will."
It was unexpected, "What?"
The smile returned, "If I'm on the duty roster, then the men can decide if they are alright with being around be. And Payback knows them well enough to tell if I'm welcome with the already sick or injured men."
Wolffe nodded, "That's a fantastic idea Lyni. I'll be sure to add you."
It was her turn to nod, "Now take off your armour so we can clean and paint it. It's looking faded." He rolled his eyes, but complied. The two spent the evening together painting and cleaning in comfortable silence. Lyni brought the paint for this reason.
