During his pregnancy, Mineta could not see and would not allow the doctor to cauterize his eyes because he was terrified the baby would fall out when he was taking a bath.
I had just gotten out of bed when Mineta had announced that his water broke, and I drove him to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctor reached into Mineta's womb and pulled the baby out.
Once Mineta was moved from the hospital's maternity ward to a ward for postpartum mothers, he saw there were women in far worse shape than he was. A mother named Suzanne was holding her newborn in her arms and screaming, "It's an alien! It's an alien!" He was told her husband had left her because she had gotten herself pregnant. She didn't know it at the time, but Suzanne had been with child for over 20 weeks.
The child gained weight and Mineta took it back to the orphanage but the child would not live until it was six months old.
