Chapter 9: Thea's Big Chance

We find ourselves at Nico's home as Medusa was slow to get up. Letting out a yawn she walks down the hall.
"Nico sweetie time to wake up." Medusa said as her snakes yawned only to see his bed was empty. "Nico?"
Making her way to the main room she saw Nico walking around with a smile on his face as he was cutting fruit and putting them into bowls.
"Morning mom." Nico said walking over and kissing her on the cheek. "I made you breakfast."
Surprised by this the snakes hiss confused.
"Uh Nico is everything alright?" Medusa asks worried.
"Everything is perfect mom. I couldn't be happier." Nico smiles putting the bowls down on the table.
"Wow something you would like to share?" Medusa asks grabbing some fruit and eating it.
"I'm just not sure, I just feel like the world is a better place." Nico said before grabbing his bag and his walking stick.
"Well I'll see you soon. I'm heading to school a little early today." Nico said.
"Early? Who are you and what have you done with my son?" Medusa asks.
"Wouldn't know. It's hard to remember where I put anything." Nico jokes causing Medusa to smile.
"Just checking." Medusa smirks seeing it was still him. "Don't stay out too late."
"Love you mom." Nico calls out walking down the path.
Looking out the window the snakes hiss saying something.
"What? Nico in love?" Medusa said surprised before they hiss again. "I hope he doesn't plan on inviting her home anytime soon."
Chuckling the snakes hiss at her causing Medusa to smirk.
"Heh nice try boys but no girl gets to date my son until I see what makes her so special." Medusa points out.
At Olympian Academy, as the students were entering Thea sitting at a table watching Nico and Hercules.
"Okay easy, easy." Nico said as Herc was placing multiple sticks atop each other and none of them had broke.
"Just one…more." Herc said before putting it up. "Yes!"
"Told you, you'd get control sooner or later." Nico said.
"Thanks so much Nico. I owe you one." Hercules said patting Nico on the back and he didn't fall over.
"Wow you are getting better." Nico jokes causing them to laugh.
Watching him, Thea let out a sigh at how helpful and caring he was.
"Hoo Hoo." Thea's owl hooted hinting he was smiling.
"What? I'm allowed to like boys." Thea said but her owl just nudged her.
Looking down Thea saw Hercules walking away leaving Nico all alone.
Smiling Thea saw her chance.
Getting up, Thea slowly walked down when Nico smiles.
"I know that's you, Thea." Nico said.
"One of these days you have to share how you got your senses to be so strong." Thea giggles.
"Sorry this took years to learn." Nico said.
"For your information, Nicodemus I am a very fast learner." Thea said.
"Is that so? Well Thea, we still have some time before lunch is over. Would you like to sit with me?" Nico asks.
"I'd love to." Thea said as they sat down.
"Thea…I really want to say thank you." Nico said.
"For what?" Thea asks.
"Well, when I first came to this school I didn't think things were going to work out but then I met you. You're something else and…you're very sweet." Nico said causing Thea to blush softly.
"Thank you Nico and while we're on the topic. I wasn't having the best time before I met you either. I was…struggling with something." Thea said.
"I'm sorry to hear that. It must be hard if you can't figure it out." Nico said.
"Maybe I just needed a little helping hand." Thea said.
"Anytime." Nico said.
Smiling Thea leans in and kisses him on the cheek causing Nico to blush and fidget.
"Still trying to get used to that." Nico chuckles nervously.
"Me too, but I enjoy it." Thea said.
As Nico lifts his head up to look at her, Thea was drawn to his smile and as they leaned in about to kiss someone moved in.
"Hey what's going on here?" Hermes asks startling Nico and Thea causing Nico to fall back and hit the ground.
"Nico! Are you okay?" Thea asks helping him up.
"Ugh yeah what happened?" Nico groans.
"It appears one of my friends decided to drop in." Thea said looking to Hermes who was chuckling.
"Sorry about that." Hermes said putting his hand behind his head.
"Uh hi I'm Nico." Nico said.
"Call me Cain." He smiles. "Listen I need to have a word with Thea if you don't."
"Uh I kinda do mind. We were in the middle of something." Nico narrows his eyes.
"We'll continue this later Nico. Cain has a habit of not showing up unless it's important, but I promise we'll talk later today." Thea said.
"You better." Nico said.
"Oh stop you." Thea said playfully shoving him.
"I'll see you soon." Nico said giving her a peck on the cheek before walking away.
"So that's the blind mortal you won't shut up about." Cain said.
"Thanks a lot Hermes. Way to ruin the moment." Thea said turning to him.
"Wow, never thought I'd see the day you would find someone like that. Definitely a unique one." Hermes chuckles.
"What do you want?" Thea narrows her eyes.
"I have big news. It's what you've been waiting for. Zeus is assigning you a quest." Hermes said causing Thea to smile.
"Finally!" Thea grins eager.
"You are to choose your champions and prepare them for the challenge ahead. You have 2 days before you will have to depart. All the details are right here." Hermes said handing her a scroll.
"Finally, my chance to create new heroes and rub it in my stupid brother's face." Thea said taking it and opening.
"Best of luck, I hope you choose wisely." Hermes said before flying off.
"I know just who to pick." Thea smiles as she ran off to get her first champion.
Later that afternoon, Medusa was in town wearing her hood over her face as she was looking around for food.
"Hmm what would Nico like for dinner?" She asks when she noticed him down the street. "Perfect." She smiles.
However, before she could reach him, Thea walks up to Nico and takes his hand.
"That must be the lucky girl." Medusa said as they walk away.
Slowly following Medusa peeks out to get a closer look and when she noticed Thea's grey eyes she gasps in horror.
"No…it can't be." Medusa said as she sees a memory of those soulless grey eyes looking upon her before Medusa tightens her fist as anger and rage fills her body.
At the temple on the outskirts of town, Thea leads Nico inside.
"What is this place?" Nico asks.
"This is the Temple of Athena where all heroes begin." Thea said.
"Shouldn't you have brought Herc here then?" Nico asks.
"Well yes but…Nico I have discovered that Hercules has been assigned a heroes quest and I believe the best team for him would be you and the rest of your friends." Thea said.
"Huh? I mean Tempest and Icarus I get. Tempest is a natural warrior and Icarus is pretty crafty and smart but why me?" Nico asks.
"Nico you don't realize how amazing you truly are. You're amazing and I think you would be a great help on this quest." Thea assures.
"Really?" Nico smiles.
"Really." Thea smiles leaning in and kissing him on the lips.
Melting into the kiss, Nico kisses back.
Arriving at the front, Medusa looks to see Thea kissing her son and instantly something snapped in her.
"Well alright but you'll have to figure out how to convince my mother to let me go on this quest. She's very protective." Nico said.
"Don't worry I'm sure she'll like me." Thea said.
"YOU!" Medusa roars storming in.
Turning around Thea saw Medusa rip off her hood revealing her snake hair. "Medusa?!"
Acting quick Thea drew her shield ready for battle.
"I didn't think you were still alive." Thea glares.
"Yeah well looking detail isn't your specialty despite your title." Medusa growls.
"Wait a minute." Nico said looking over.
"Nico get behind me. I can handle this monster." Thea said.
"Fat chance I won't let you anywhere near him!" Medusa said as Nico moves in.
"Mom? What are you doing here?" Nico asks shocking her.
"Mom?!" Thea asks not expecting this.
"What's going on here? You guys know each other?" Nico asks.
"This hideous, horrible gorgon is your mother?" Thea asks.
"This no good, conniving Olympian is your date?!" Medusa asks.
"Wait gorgon? Olympian? Mom, Thea what's going on?" Nico asks.
As both Thea and Medusa glared each other down Nico was very happy he couldn't see what was going on.
"Mom you two know each other?" Nico asks.
"I could never forget her. I see her in every single one of my nightmares she's there." Medusa crosses her arms.
"Huh?" Nico asks.
"I never in a million years thought you would show your face here again." Thea glares.
"You'd love that, wouldn't you. You can fool everyone else with your appearance, but you can't fool me. I know those horrible grey eyes of yours anywhere." Medusa growls as her snakes hiss at her.
"It's amazing you even figured out how to navigate with your appearance." Thea said.
"You'd be amazed what I've been able to do. Including raising my son all on my own." Medusa said gesturing to Nico.
"I have no idea what's going on. Can someone please tell me what's happening?" Nico asks so confused.
"What's happening Nico is you're being used. The girl you have a crush on isn't even a girl she's a goddess. Thea is Athena, Goddess of Wisdom!" Medusa declares as Nico looks at Thea in shock.
