Both Kelly and Voight noticed the second that Casey suddenly went limp in Severide's arms and his head dropped to his chest. Voight moved towards Casey as Kelly reached around Matt's neck and found his pulse, a couple tense seconds later he told Voight, "He's alright...just passed out."
Voight helped him move Casey to the couch and got him settled on it. The Intelligence sergeant motioned for Severide to follow him outside, Kelly didn't like the thought of leaving Casey alone, but he also knew whatever Voight was going to say probably wasn't anything Matt wanted to hear if he woke up, so he reluctantly followed Hank out the front door.
"He was doing so well until you had to come and tell him this," Kelly said.
"He had to know," Voight responded.
"Am I wrong?" Kelly asked suddenly, the spontaneity of the question taking the cop off guard, he asked Voight, "There's no good way out of this, but I'd think if I were Casey I would be just a little bit relieved to know it was a case of mistaken identity, and that it wasn't planned for them to come after me."
"There's no good answer for any of this, Severide," Hank answered.
"Would they come here though?" Kelly asked. "Is there any chance that they'd actually come here and attack Casey again?"
"I wouldn't think so, but I can't guarantee it," Hank said.
Kelly sighed and squeezed his eyes shut as everything hit him at once, including the fact Casey hadn't been able to take a shower unattended since coming home from the hospital. Even Matt admitted he knew nobody would come into the apartment while he did, but even that wasn't enough to nudge him past this hurdle.
Something else suddenly occurred to the Squad lieutenant and he asked Voight, "Casey said he didn't get a good look at any of the guys who attacked him...so how'd he know the cop in the picture wasn't one of them?"
"Good question," Voight responded. "If Matt remembers anything from his attack, even if he thinks it's nothing, we need to know, it'll better our odds of finding the bastards responsible."
"He's not going to talk to you if he does," Kelly pointed out.
"True," the cop answered unfazed, "but he'll talk to you."
Kelly blinked, "Me?"
"If he tells you anything, you've got Antonio's number, right?" Hank asked.
"Whoa...wait a minute...if he tells me something and I tell your guys, that's just hearsay, it's not admissible in court, is it? If this whole thing gets thrown out on a technicality..."
Voight raised a hand to get his attention and told him, "Casey's the victim in this, he was there, if he tells you anything that happened during that time, that makes you an outcry witness, the State's Attorney can use that as an exception to the hearsay rule, it's all good, Kelly."
And yet somehow that didn't make him feel any better.
"Can I ask you a question? Is Casey gonna be alright?"
"There's no clear answer on that, Severide," Voight shook his head, "but, in time, with the right kind of help...he could be."
"Right kind...you mean therapy," Kelly said.
"It's something worth considering," Voight offered. "Are you staying with Casey for the time being?"
Kelly nodded.
"That's probably going to help him as much as anything right now...but you should know what you're getting yourself into, he's got a rough road ahead of him and when he has his bad days, he's going to take you down with him. Are you prepared for that?"
"I have to be," Kelly answered matter-of-factly.
Voight let out a small grunting sigh and told the lieutenant, "I know about what happened at the hospital, Kelly."
"How do you know that?"
"They don't call us Intelligence for nothing," was all the cop was willing to say on the matter. "I know you feel like you owe Casey this, but if you want to help him, you better bring the others in on this...it's too much for you to try handling alone."
Kelly wasn't sure how to respond, so he didn't.
Voight looked at him and told him, "I wish I had better news on this right now, but I don't, but we're going to do everything we can to find the people that did this and bring them in. Nobody's dragging their feet on this, Severide. What happened between Casey and me is old news, as far as I'm concerned, he's one of ours, and we're not gonna stop until we got enough for an arrest."
Kelly glumly nodded and managed to get out a weak, "Thank you."
Casey opened his eyes and was disoriented for a moment before realizing he was on his couch.
"Kelly?" he called as he sat up.
"I'm here," Kelly said as he came out of the kitchen, "you okay, buddy?"
Casey closed his eyes like he had a migraine and asked, "Voight was here, wasn't he?"
"Yeah," Kelly answered hesitantly.
"I didn't just dream what he said, did I?"
"No...I'm sorry."
Casey sighed before opening his eyes, he looked one way, then the other, and appeared lost. "I don't get it, I just don't get it...I've never asked this before in my life, but why did this have to happen to me? Especially now that I know I wasn't even the target, why me?"
Kelly shook his head as he went over to the couch, "I don't know, Matt, I'm sorry."
Matt looked at him and exhaled a sigh, "I'm not going to hit you again."
"Well I wasn't worried about that," Kelly replied as he sat down beside Casey. "Matt...Voight said anything you remember about the men who attacked you-" Casey groaned and turned away from him, "Will help them catch these guys...Casey..."
"I don't want to talk to them about this again," Casey turned back towards him. "I want them locked up, but they've got enough from me already, I don't want to do this anymore."
"I don't blame you, and I can't tell you what to do," Kelly said gently, "but if there's anything else you remember they can use...they have to know."
Casey sighed, and leaned over and hugged Kelly tight and told him, "I don't want to do this again."
Kelly put his arm around Casey and held him close and told him, "I know...I know, buddy, I know."
Late that night after Casey had fallen asleep, Kelly sat in the kitchen and dialed Antonio's number on his cell phone, and waited anxiously.
"Yeah?" it sounded like Antonio was in bed and had just woken up.
"Antonio?"
"Kelly? That you?"
"Yeah, sorry, is this a bad time?"
"No...what's going on?"
"You're working this case too?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Casey doesn't want to talk to the cops again, he doesn't want to have to answer anymore questions," Kelly said.
There was a small pause, then Dawson replied, "That's understandable, that's pretty universal for rape victims."
"But..."
There was a tense silence between the two men.
"What is it?" Antonio asked.
Kelly bit his bottom lip for a second before answering, "One of the guys who attacked Casey was black, at least one of them, he didn't remember what the other two looked like...but he doesn't want anyone to know this...if you guys arrest someone and the press gets wind of it, it's going to cause a whole new race relation problem with CPD and the black community, and he knows it."
"There's always that risk, but we can't let criminals run free just because the media plays favorites to them because of what color they are," Antonio replied.
"But you have to understand, he's not going to come in and tell anybody this," Kelly said.
"Okay...but I get the feeling that's not the end of it, Kelly," Antonio said.
"Voight said if Casey told me anything...that'd make me a witness, that if I told you guys, it'd be admissible."
"It does, you are, and it is," Antonio replied. "Even without Casey telling us this himself, it is going to help us, Kelly. How're you guys holding up?"
Kelly shrugged even though Antonio couldn't see him. "Casey just fell asleep a while ago, he's been on edge ever since Voight paid a visit."
"Yeah well...Hank does have that effect on people," Dawson responded, "how about you? You doing okay?"
"I guess...I'm trying to help Casey and I'm trying to prepare myself for whatever's coming, but I don't know what it's going to be," Kelly answered.
"It won't be easy, and if it starts to get too much, you call me, I'll help you figure it out," the cop told him.
Kelly felt stunned by that.
"Seriously?"
"I have a little more experience than you do, I can probably help calm Casey down."
Severide felt absolutely floored by that revelation.
"I don't know what to say...thanks."
"No problem, Kelly, you know Casey's always been like our own."
"It sounds a lot different hearing it from you than from Voight," Kelly noted.
Antonio laughed. "Yeah well give Hank enough time and he'll eventually grow on you, like a wart."
"Thanks, Antonio."
"Anytime, Kelly. Bye."
"Bye."
