RWBY Distortion: Volume 3
Chapter 8: From Bad to Worse
The fairgrounds were in flames as Grimm rampaged throughout the area, Atlas soldiers, both living and mechanical were unloading magazine after magazine as the hordes tore through the area. Beacon had become a warzone, and amid the chaos, Weiss and Blake were still coming to grips with what happened.
"I don't believe this…" Weiss said in shock
Blake pulled out her ringing scroll and asked "Yang, are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Is Ruby with you? She's not answering her Scroll" Yang inquired.
"No, she isn't, Yang, I'm sure she's fine. She's our leader. She can take care of herself." Blake reminded the blond brawler.
Yang hesitated before responding with "Right"
Weiss shook her head and said, "This can't be happening, Penny…"
"I'm headed to the docks near the courtyard. The White Fang are releasing Grimm into the school!" Yang explained
"The White Fang is here!? Yang are you still there?" Blake asked as she heard grim growling on the other end of the call.
"Ugh! Gotta go! Be careful!" Yang said rapidly as she cut the call.
"Blake, what are we going to do?" Weiss questioned
Blake's face went from shock to determination as she said "We're going to the docks, and we're doing our job"
Blake used her Scroll to call upon her rocket locker, which landed behind her and opened up to reveal Gambol Shroud. Weiss gives one last look at Blake before nodding in agreement.
On cue Team STEL arrived, all with their weapons drawn and their combat gear on.
Steven slashed a Beowolf in half with Masamune before saying "the grim are the heaviest around Beacon, wanna stick together for a bit?"
Weiss and Blake gave a nervous nod as Weiss's rocket locker arrived as well. In a situation like this, a large group was a welcome option.
Back at Amity Colosseum, the Nevermore screeched as it continued to weaken the force field that was keeping it from getting in.
The computer announcer was blaring over the intercom "Warning: Safety Barriers Failing"
As civilians ran past her in a panic, Ruby Rose was still kneeling on the ground with her head down, her expression a mixture of shock and sadness. As the Nevermore circled around the colosseum, Pyrrha Nikos struggled to stand as she looked in shock at the torn apart Penny Polendina.
"PYRRHA! Pyrrha, that thing's going to break in! You've gotta move!" Jaune Arc warned.
Jaune, Ren, and Nora look up and see the force field flash as the Nevermore rose back up before diving back in, finally shattering the barrier. Wasting no time, the leader of Team JNPR jumped from the stands into the arena.
"Jaune!" Nora shouted out of concern for her leader.
"Pyrrha, please snap out of it!" Jaune pleaded as he ran towards Pyrrha.
The force of The Nevermore landing on the arena floor knocked Jaune on his back, blowing back Pyrrha and the pieces of Penny as well. The Nevermore screeched and lunged towards Pyrrha. In the blink of an eye, the Nevermore was knocked back by a red, twirling blur of roses, with the cause of the blur gripping one of Penny's discarded swords and stabbing into the Nevermore, before jumping back down in front of Pyrrha.
"Ruby?" Pyrrha asked in confusion.
Ruby, with an, angered, a determined expression on her face, pointed Penny's sword toward the Nevermore and shouted "Leave her alone!"
The Nevermore rose and circled the arena before lunging back down. Ruby held Penny's sword defensively, only for the Nevermore to get pinned down by a barrage of rocket lockers, and screeched in pain before going unconscious. The lockers then opened up, revealing the weapons of various students, including Crocea Mors, StormFlower, Magnhild, and Fulcrum. The respective owner of the sword pulled out from his locker, alongside Scarlet David gripping his cutlass and flintlock pistol, Sage Ayana with his sword, and Neptune Vasilias with his gun in hand. Sun Wukong was holding Ruyi Bang and Jingu Bang in its staff form, with Ren and Nora carrying their respective weapons, and the remaining members of Team CFVY, the members of Team ABRN, as well as Flynt Coal and Neon Katt of Team FNKI, all gripping their respective weapons. The students were then suddenly shaken as the Nevermore started to get back up. Ren then leaped up into the air and used the blades of his weapons to slash at the Nevermore's eye. Arslan Altan uses her rope dart to swing down and grab the towering Yatsuhashi from the ground carrying him upward. Sage also leaps up into the air, and Nora ran up the Nevermore's head and hit it with a Magnhild in its hammer form. When Arslan reaches peak height, she let go of Yatsuhashi, who is then joined by Sage, as the two broadsword wielders slash down and decapitate the Nevermore, causing its head to land near Ruby before dissipating into black particles. While the students formed a perimeter
Arslan landed back on the ground next to her teammates. Ruby looked over to the teary-eyed Pyrrha.
Pyrrha was kneeling on the ground), her eyes welling up as she said "Ruby, I... I'm so sorry"
"Me too. But it wasn't your fault!" Ruby assured
Jaune walked up to Pyrrha with Miló and Akoúo̱ in his hands as he added " She's right Whoever was on that microphone... they're the ones that did this. And we have to make sure they don't take anyone else."
Pyrrha stood back up and took her weapons back from Jaune, the two of them exchanging determined expressions. They then looked over to Ruby, who smiled at the impressive ensemble of students. The moment was cut short when they noticed a hippogriff-like Grimm land on top of the colosseum. They fly towards the group of students as Ren calls the Grimm species out by their formal name.
"Griffons" Ren scoffed.
"Anybody got a plan of attack?" Neptune quested
Ruby looked at her empty belt before turning to Sun with "Sun! I need your Scroll!"
Sun used his tail to flick his Scroll to Ruby, who caught it and used to summon her locker, which opened up revealing Crescent Rose inside. However, Ruby was stopped when a Griffon landed on her locker and roared at her before being scared away at the sound of a gunshot.
Professor Port was holding his blunderbuss ax, Blowhard, in hand, with Oobleck holding his flamethrower in its club form
"Students! I think it would be best for you to leave" Port requested
"But we did a-" Ruby was cut off by the other Professor.
"Miss Rose! This day will surely go down in Remnant's history. I'd prefer it if my students could live to tell about it" Oobleck begged
Ruby nodded at the Doctor's words before grabbing Crescent Rose and twirling it into its scythe form.
"Let's go!" Ruby announced.
As all the students left, Ruby gets distracted by the flash of Velvet Scarlatina's camera. She stopped to look at the photograph she took but was interrupted when her leader called out to her.
"Velvet!" Coco called.
With the students clear of the arena, Port and Oobleck stood back-to-back with their weapons in hand as the Griffons circled around them
Port laughed enthusiastically as he said "One final match, Barty! Place your bets!"
Civilians continued to run and flee in panic as they reached the docking bays of the colosseum. Atlas Soldiers were directing civilians to calmly step into the Air Buses. Suddenly, White Fang Bullheads appeared, dropping off more Grimm at the docking bay. Two Atlesian Knights escorting General Ironwood effortlessly gunned down an Ursa. As they proceeded forward, the Knights were suddenly brutally ripped apart by a much larger, armored Beowolf. The Beowolf then noticed Ironwood as the General starts to run towards it, gradually picking up speed as he nears the charging Beowolf. He screamed a loud battle cry as he pulled out Due Process from his coat. Due Process was a white revolver with a six-chambered hexagonal cylinder. It had an overall bulky, brick-like shape and possessed characteristics of both a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol, with both a cylinder and a slide. It also had two triggers and an external hammer. Intricate floral designs were etched onto the slide and grips while light fluorescent blue designs were below the barrel and on the cylinder.
Ironwood ducked and slid under the Beowolf's swipe and shot at it twice. Pivoting as he skids across the floor, and using his free hand as a break. The Beowolf landed and shook its head then charged at Ironwood again, who fired his revolver three more times before having to duck under another swipe. The Beowolf attempted to swipe at him again with its left claw, but Ironwood effortlessly stopped it with his own right hand. The General then fired at the Beowolf's feet, the explosion causing it to get airborne, and still gripping it's claw, Ironwood proceeded to swing it back down to the ground with his own brute strength. Ironwood then picked up the Beowolf, aimed his revolver at its skull, and shot it point-blank, causing black blood to splatter from it. Ironwood then watched the body of the Beowolf dissipate before leaving.
"What's going on!?" Ruby questioned as she and the other students came onto the scene.
Ironwood shook his head and answered "Grimm are crawling all over the city. The White Fang's invaded Beacon, and to make matters worse, some... vagabond has seized control of my ship. Until we regain command, the skies are out of our control. So I'm.." Ironwood paused and headshotted a Creep advancing on the group from behind, before finishing "...going to take it back"
As Ironwood turned for his ship, he stopped when asked a question.
"What should we do?" Jaune asked.
Ironwood turned and faced the students again and stated "You have two choices. Defend your Kingdom and your school... or save yourselves. No one will fault you if you leave"
Ironwood then proceeds to climb up on the dropship in front of him, as he addresses the crowd with "Let's move out!"
As Ironwood left, the students looked at each other and murmured before a certain monkey Faunus spoke up.
"I mean... come on!" Sun scoffed
Jaune noticed an empty airbus and said "We can take a ship to Beacon!"
Roman Torchwick was giddily fidgeting around with the controls of the Resolute, like a child in a candy store.
Roman looked at the console Hmm... let's see, what does... this button do? After the button is pressed, a booming noise was heard in the distance.
"Oh, fun! How about ... this one? Hm. Alright, nothing" Roman joked
Neopolitan, still wearing her Atlesian military disguise, handed Roman a Scroll with the Black Queen insignia.
As Roman inserted it in the console, he laughed with "Oh-ho-ho! Now this one, this one's gonna be fun!"
As a squadron of Atlesian Knights shot down Grimm, they suddenly stopped as their visors and LEDs turned a dark crimson, and turned around, pointing their guns at Glynda Goodwitch and Qrow Branwen as they continue to fight the Grimm, the realization shocking them as they see the Knights now turned against two of their now former allies.
"What!?" Glynda questioned
On the courtyards of Beacon, Weiss and Blake are nearly caught off-guard by the local Knights also succumbing to the virus and turning towards them, fortunately, Blake reacted quickly.
"Look out!" Blake shouted.
Blake managed to push Weiss aside to dodge incoming fire, but before the Knights could fire again, they were fried by an electricity blast from Tesa. Steven Erick and Luna shook their heads as the robots fell to the ground twitching and sparking
Meanwhile, the oblivious general, still en route to the Airship, got a nasty surprise when the Knights on his dropship suddenly activated and turned on him.
"No!" Ironwood called out
With an explosion the dropship suddenly began losing altitude, plummeting from the ground as two flashes could be seen from the cockpit. The students watched in horror as they saw the dropship fall from the sky. Ruby steeled her resolve and ran to the bay doors of their Air Bus.
"Ruby! What are you doing!?" Sun demanded.
Ruby then jumped off the Air Bus as it was taking off, using her Semblance of speed to safely land on the runway after freefalling in the sky. As she ran to the stadium, she found it nearly empty with nothing aside from empty rocket lockers She punched in the code, latched on with Crescent Rose, and immediately took to the skies, landing on top of Roman's stolen airship with a thud.
Back at Beacon, the hacked Knights continued to fire, but they were cut up by a flurry of slashes. Weiss was taking down a sizable group of knights using a combination of Myrtenaster's strikes as well as her using her Glyph Semblance, while Blake fought off a group of White Fang soldiers, before using her Semblance to dodge a dual sword-wielding soldier. More White Fang grunts charged at her, but they are all suddenly knocked back by Weiss. Afterward, Weiss and Blake stood back-to-back noticing a group of human Atlas Soldiers fighting off an Atlesian Paladin, which had also been affected by the virus and turned rogue. The Paladin easily batted aside several of the soldiers.
"Come on!" Weiss shouted, before they could aid the soldiers, however, they noticed a Bullhead about to crash land. An armored Beowolf jumped out of it before it could crash with the aircraft. The Beowolf landed on the ground and started to chase after fleeing civilians. Weiss and Blake exchanged one last look with each other before parting ways.
"Be safe" Weiss said calmly before the two rushed off in separate directions.
Team STEL was already fighting a group of Atlesian Paladins, Masamune cleaved straight through one of them, with the blade at max power no metal could take a slash. Steven was punched by another Paladin and knocked down. It tried to smash him into the ground only for Tesa to fry it's circuits with another lightning blast
Luna looked at Erick and said, "We got this..get to Ironwood's ship and shut these things down!"
Erick nodded and vanished, leaving his Team to handle the robots for now.
Blake was running just outside the dining hall. However, she stopped when the Beowolf from earlier latched onto the side of the building above her. Her attention was then drawn away from the Beowolf when she heard a wounded scream inside the burning interior of the dining hall. She turned to see what was happening and gave a look of horror when she saw a familiar figure throwing an Atlas soldier.
Standing in the burning dining hall was a tall Faunus with auburn hair that spiked backward in a windswept way. While most of his hair was red, he had streaks of brown. His Faunus heritage was two reddish-black bull horns, one on each side of his head, also seemingly slanted back. His outfit consisted of an asymmetrical black, long-sleeved, double-breasted stylized high-collared blazer with slit sleeves along with red thorn sigils adorned with a white crest that lined up on his left shoulder. His suit jacket had crimson lining atop his red shirt, with red thorn sigils atop a black flap attached to the bottom of the left hem and his wilting rose emblem on the back over an emblazoned white sigil resembling the curved stems and flower of the deadly nightshade plant. His blazer was half-buttoned, exposing a red shirt with a black line running parallel to his collar under it
"No... Adam?" Blake asked in horror
Adam grinned creepily and replied "Hello, my darling"
Atop a building about a mile from Beacon Cinder Fall, Emerald Sustrai, and Mercury Black were watching the chaos unfold, Mercury was filming the event with his Scroll.
Cinder smirked and said "Beautiful"
"It's almost sad" Emerald admitted with a sorrowful expression on her face.
"It's horrendous. Focus on the Atlesian Knights" Cinder ordered.
"Oh, I'm getting all of it," Mercury assured
Cinder nodded and replied "Good. Continue the broadcast until the end"
Suddenly, a tremor rocked the three of them.
Cinder's smile grew more wicked as she said "And do not miss what happens next"
Cinder walked off as Mercury continued filming with an evil grin on his face, while Emerald's expression only grew more worrisome.
Inside his office, Ozpin was watching the battle on three video feeds, one showing some burning buildings, the middle showing a group of Atlas soldiers struggling against a Deathstalker on Beacon's main avenue, and the last showing civilians stuck on a rooftop waving for help, while an Ursa slowly crawled up the side of the building. Ozpin then started to walk away from his desk, grabbing his cane in the process, before proceeding to the elevator. However, he was stopped in his tracks when a sudden tremor shakes the ground.
Back in the city, Glynda and Qrow continued fighting, before they too were shaken by another tremor. Qrow stabbed his sword into the ground to keep himself standing.
Glynda seemed to have an idea of what was coming as she muttered "No…"
Another tremor shook Jaune as he slashed down an Ursa Major, with Luna and Tesa looking around in confusion.
Four miles from Beacon, a mountain started to violently shake and crumble, as various body parts of a monstrous-looking Grimm were revealed. The mountain completely broke apart, releasing a titanic Grimm. The beast was as large as one of the Atlas airships with large red bat-like wings, a pair of legs, and a tail. The red membrane of its wing was translucent. It had rough black skin, with white bone-like spines along its body, including an external skull, rib cage, and rows of dorsal spikes. It had large claws on both its legs and on the tip of its tail. The Grimm's skull has a pair of large prominent horns and six yellow-red eyes. Its jaw had teeth extending down along the creature's neck, beyond its skull, such that its entire neck also opened when it roared.
The Wyvern flew over the abandoned Mountain Glenn, heading towards Beacon. As it flew, it exuded a black, tar-like substance that dropped to the ground in the city of Vale and spawned various Grimm.
Ozpin approached the window of his office, noticing the Wyvern getting closer. The massive Grimm excreted more of the black substance, which dropped to the ground and spawned more Grimm near the base of the CCT.
A few minutes later Pyrrha noticed Ozpin standing by the entrance of the tower. While the others ran off to continue fighting, Pyrrha walked towards her headmaster without saying a word to her teammates, much to their confusion.
"Where's she going?" Nora asked
"'ll go find out. You two stay here and keep fighting" Jaune ordered. Steven, who had gotten separated from his team came up behind him and said "I'll come too"
Unbeknownst to everyone, Steven knew exactly what Ozpin was up to, and was going to see if he needed to intervene or not.
As the duo followed Pyrrha, they were unaware of a familiar ashen haired woman watching them from a distance.
Cinder Fall scowled as her amber eyes glowed, she spoke with a cold voice saying "The Fall Maiden's power has one rightful owner...ME!"
