Chapter Eight: Worrying for Nothing.
Raising an eyebrow as she spotted an incredibly stressed out looking Charlie, Leona had not seen her boss ever looking this stressed out and she could not imagine anything could do so; let alone over the phone. Spotting Diana by the coffee machine, Leona decided to ask her what was going on and she hoped that it was not another disappearance in Seattle; it looked like there was a serial killer on the loose.
"Whose Charlie talking to?" Leona asked moving to make herself a drink, her eyes drifting back to Charlie who was running a hand through his hair and looked defeated. Having just returned from her weekly meeting with Sam, Leona was surprised to find that she rather enjoyed meeting up with him and their talks were not completely worked based as they should have been.
Leona found herself taking an interest in Sam and she liked hearing his stories about La Push; she was even surprised when he had invited her along to a council meeting. Spending time with Sam had awoken Leona's interest in the area and she often found herself reading some of the local legends before heading to bed; something that she found interesting and it awoke her love of history. The books that she had found were not much but they were a lot more helpful than the ones at the local library; she had ordered the ones she had off the internet and they were interesting.
"His ex-wife... she called to 'organise' him for their daughter's birthday this month," Diana explained with a roll of her eyes, this happened every year for Bella's birthday and she could not believe that Renee was still getting away with this crap. Last year, it had been that Bella needed a new computer for her school work and Renee had gotten her a mouse mat for it; she always waited until a couple of weeks before Bella's birthday to make the call.
"My bet is, she chose the cheap gift for herself and wants Charlie to get the expensive part of it," Diana said annoyed, she honestly did not know how Renee managed to get away with it. She wished Charlie would stand up for himself, especially now that Bella was living here in Forks with him and had been since January; it should be Renee who had the better income right now because of her new husband that she could splash the cash on the gift.
Leona raised an eyebrow, she had heard little about Charlie's ex-wife and from what she had heard Renee was a flighty woman who lived across the country; no one in the department liked her and whenever she called Charlie looked like he was going to pull out his hair. Charlie exited his office looking more than a little put off, he could not believe this and he wished Renee would not wait until it was this close to Bella's birthday to drop things like this on him.
He did not say a word to Diana knowing that she could understand, he had to go and pick up Bella's birthday present; Renee had decided to get Bella a photo album leaving Charlie to get the expensive camera that she had picked out. It was annoying and while Charlie appreciated the help that he was given, he really did not like how he always got the short end of the stick when it came to gift giving when it came to their daughter.
He honestly had no idea what to get Bella, she did not tend to ask for much and was always glued to her boyfriend anyway; it would be nice if just for once he had his daughter to himself. It certainly did not help that just that morning he had been informed that Bella would be attending a party at the Cullens house on her birthday; he liked Alice but even she seemed to pull his daughter away from him more now.
Bella would be spending most of her birthday with the Cullens and Charlie had hoped that he would get to take his daughter out for a meal even if it did mean that he had to invite the boyfriend as well. Now he would probably only get to see Bella for a couple of hours since he had booked the day off work so that he could spend the day with her, now it was all for nothing.
This was probably the last birthday that he would get to spend with his daughter, she would be off to college next year and he had been saving up since she was a baby so she could go somewhere good. Shaking his head, Charlie wondered when the next time he would see Bella; he had no doubts that Renee would use anything trick she could to get their daughter to spend her school breaks with her.
Pulling up outside her house, Leona was almost surprised when she saw Sam sitting on the porch steps waiting for her; she had seen him just that morning and she was not sure what would bring him to her place. Slowly climbing out of her car, Leona made sure that she had everything before shutting the door behind her and starting to walk towards the porch were Sam waited patiently for her to approach.
He had been rather lucky that there had not been a drop of rain that day otherwise he would have been soaked; Sam got to his feet nervously when she drew closer not recalling the last time that he had felt this way. Already he could imagine the teasing that he would get from Paul and Jared about this, they had not been able to resist annoying him about the fact that he still had not asked Leona out.
It had been over a month now since he had imprinted on Leona and while things were going well building a friendship with her; he felt like he should ask her out while he had the chance. Sam had noticed how close she was with Antonio and he did not want to wait around before something happened there even if Leona and Antonio were just friends.
"Is everything okay?" Leona asked sure that if it had been work related then he would have come by the station to talk to her; she was tired and she wanted to get inside and shower. Charlie had been rather grumpy all day and his mood had not improved when Bella had shown up with Edward wanting to tell him that she was having dinner over at the Cullens house and would be back later.
Sam nodded his head and stuffed his hands into his pockets, he had never felt so nervous in his life and he remember when he had asked Leah out. That had been easy and it had helped that he had been so sure that she had liked him in return; however, with Leona, he did not know that and it made him even more nervous. Stopping beside Sam, Leona looked up at him and waited to see what he had to say and she hoped that everything was alright; he looked nervous and she could not imagine why he would feel that way coming to see her when they saw each other weekly.
"I was wondering if you'd like to have dinner with me on Saturday?" Sam said trying to sound a lot more confident than he felt; he had been trying to figure out the best way to do this for weeks now. Nothing that he came up with seemed right and now here he was standing on her porch asking her out to dinner on Saturday; it was not the best but he did not know how else to do it but rip off the band aid. He had even sat in their meeting that morning trying to find the best time to ask her and the words could not pass his lips; he had kicked himself when she had walked out of the café without him being able to do it.
Leona stared at him a little taken back, she had not been expecting this and her mind went completely blank as she scrambled to come up with an answer. It was not something that she had considered with her move to Forks for work, she had been so invested in making sure that she found her feet that the idea of dating had slipped her mind. Her silence freaked Sam out, he could not believe that he had been so stupid; he should have planned this out better and been more prepared than this.
"I would like that," Leona said softly, a small smile on her face and she felt giddy that he had asked her out; she had not been with anyone since before the shooting. It did help that she found Sam attractive, she had thought that since they had first been introduced and it helped that she enjoyed their meetings when they had finished talking about business.
A smile formed on Sam's face when he realised that she was not turning him down, his mind racing with plans on how he could make their first date a success. It would take a lot of work but he wanted to do something that they could one day tell their grandchildren about, that was if Leona wanted kids and even then, he would be fine just making memories with her.
A part of him believed that the wolves imprinted on the person with whom he has the best chance to reproduce with but seeing Leona made him wonder if there was something more to it. The wolf inside of him felt at peace when he was with her, that everything was right with the world and he could be just Sam again; the fact that he turned into a giant wolf to defend his home be damned.
