That Eliza wasn't angry at her had surprised Lena. She'd assured Eliza that she thought Jamie was better off with her, that she was a wonderful mother. Plus Kara's amnesia meant she wouldn't be ready to take over raising Jamie, even if she took a break from her Supergirl duties. Lena didn't know how long she'd let Eliza hug her, but it had probably been too long. She couldn't remember ever seeing the older woman hugging anyone else for that length of time before. Eventually she'd gained enough control of herself to break the hug and thanked Eliza once more for looking after Jamie.

Alex had been waiting outside the room. She said she'd take Eliza to see Kara, then asked her mother to take Jamie home so Kara could have a chance to rest.

"I should get going," Lena told her, not sure why she'd staying this long. "I'll give my driver a call."

"Or you could stay and have a long-overdue chat with Kara," Alex suggested.

"I thought you said she needs to rest?"

"If you promise not to bounce around the room like a five-year-old on a sugar high, or to upset her, you can stay. I think she'd like to see you. Just let me get Jamie out of the building first."

"Okay."

Lena waited outside the room, watching a handful of agents passing her. When Alex finally returned, she wasn't alone. There was a young male agent with her. He was discussing Kara's diagnosis, giving odds to Alex on her recovery and different potential treatments.

"Hey Lena. Sorry that took so long, Jamie didn't want to leave but mom used her 'or else' voice and Kara advised him to listen."

"I remember that tone," Lena smiled, "she used it that time she found Kara and I sitting on the roof of your house stargazing. If I'd known Kara could... that I wasn't really in danger I wouldn't have been so scared to be out there in the first place."

Alex realised Lena had amended what she was going to say and looked at her companion, "oh, this is Brainy. He knows the secret. Brainy, this is Lena Luthor."

"I'm familiar with Miss Luthor's appearance," Brainy informed her, at the same time Lena said, "nice to meet you".

Alex's communicator beeped and she pressed the earpiece to listen. After a moment she looked annoyed, then angry.

"Brainy can you show Lena to Kara's room, I've got a situation..." she took off before Brainy could agree.

Lena looked at the strange agent, "it's fine, I remember where to go."

"I'm sure with your higher than average human IQ you do, however you don't have clearance to access the room so I will have to use my ID badge."

Lena raised an eyebrow, "I'm guessing from the way you just said 'human' that you're not?"

"An astute observation."

"Not many people would trust a Luthor with that truth."

"I'm not like most people. I'm a 12th level intellect with superior knowledge. For example, I know that you are not the sort of person who will give in to the darkness that consumes your brother."

"I'm a Luthor, everyone assumes that I will, so unless you know the future..."

"I know enough that I can trust you, and I'm only admitting this much to reassure you as I've calculated the risk to the timeline is low..."

"You can predict the future? Or you've been there?" she asked, feeling excited about the possibility of time travel.

"Telling you anything further could influence future events," he shook his head sadly. "and although I would love the chance to interact further, because you have a mind able to comprehend more than most of those I meet, we have reached Kara's room."

"Oh," Lena looked at the door, slamming her focus firmly back into reality.

In any other situation she would have been intrigued by him, would have wanted to continue their conversation, but she knew she had to face Kara.

"It was good to meet you, Miss Luthor."

"Yes, if you ever want to... I mean, if you..."

"I know where you are. Thank you. I do have trouble making friends here, at least ones I can exchange ideas with."

Lena wasn't sure how he'd understood her awkward offer, but was glad he did. He seemed like an interesting person. She held up a hand before he unlocked Kara's door.

"Can I ask you one more thing?"

"Proceed."

"Your future knowledge, do you know... would it work out better if I tell Lex about Jamie, or are the risks of him hurting Jamie lower if we wait? Please, it's important."

Brainy considered her question, and the risks of answering, "ignoring what I know of the future, simply calculating the odds based on my knowledge of Lex's personality and previous actions, I would advise that you break the news to him. I cannot confirm at what point he will become aware of the truth, only that I am aware of your connection to him and that could possibly influence his reaction."

Lena let the words sink in, then she smiled at him, "thank you."

He nodded, unlocked Kara's door and walked away, already focusing his mind on DEO-related tasks.

Lena slipped into Kara's room, noting that the blonde's eyes were closed. She was about to leave, assuming Kara was sleeping, when they opened.

"Hey Lena."

"Sorry if I woke you, I can come back later."

"No, I was just resting."

Lena hovered near the door, watching as Kara pressed a button to adjusted the bed so she could sit up.

"You can come closer if you like," Kara smiled at her. "Thank you for the photos, by the way."

"I just thought, as you can't remember him you might like to see them," Lena walked slowly towards her, noting the folder was closed and on a table next to Kara.

"There's a lot I can't remember."

"At least your family will be here for you."

"I wish I could understand what happened between us. I know you said we broke up because you found out the truth about me, but I love you Lena. I thought you felt the same way?"

"I did, of course I did, but... I..." Lena looked away, remembering how she'd felt. "That was nearly twelve years ago, Kara. Do we really need to go over it now?"

"Twelve years for you, but right now I don't remember it. It's like falling asleep and being in a strange dream where suddenly I'm in the future but I don't recognise anything. Jamie tells me I'm a superhero now like my cousin, that I've got a job, and an apartment, but I have no memories of any of that. All I can think about is going off to college, of getting to see you and what our future is supposed to be like - together."

"Kara..." it pained Lena to see the blonde about to cry.

"And now it turns out that we have a son together, one that you didn't even bother to tell me about."

"Well you never told me it was a possibility. Did you even know that could happen?"

"Well no... I... I suppose there were..." Kara blushed, "I was so young when I left Krypton and although I knew how the biology side worked I didn't pay much attention to it. I knew we had birthing pods to handle babies, Kal's mother was the only woman I knew who actually went through with a pregnancy. Of course, with our low birth rates our bodies adapted to try and increase the population but..."

"Kara, did you know?"

"You're human! Even if it's possible for same-sex procreation through Kryptonian science it doesn't mean it would work between our species."

Lena pinched the bridge of her nose, "so that's a yes, then."

"No!"

"And if you weren't sure, you should have said something. We could have taken precautions. Of course, that would have meant telling me the truth, instead of letting me find out for myself."

"Says the secret Luthor," Kara brought her hands up to her mouth. "I didn't mean it like that. I don't want to argue over who kept the biggest secret."

"I think alien trumps a name."

"I'm sorry, okay? I hated lying to you, but I promised I wouldn't tell anyone until I was older. They were worried because Lex was targeting Superman and there were so many people who hated aliens..."

"Did I ever give you any reason to think that I would be that way? You could have brought aliens into the conversation, dropped a few hints to see how I'd react."

"It's fine to say that now, when it's all in your past but I was scared. What we have... what we had, it was important to me."

"It was important to me too," Lena admitted. "My family wouldn't have understood, but I didn't care. Once I'd finished college I was going to set out on my own, work hard to build us a life together. You were the family I'd always wanted. I know Lex cared about me, in his own way, but I didn't have to be a Luthor around you. I could just be Lena."

"And I could just be Kara, not another Kryptonian with superpowers."

Lena gripped her hands behind her back, "I guess that's part of growing up though, learning that the world won't just give us what we want."

"Lena..."

"After all I'm still a Luthor, and you're Supergirl."

Kara reached out and picked up the folder, offering it to Lena, "Jamie said you were running away again, that you had a suitcase packed when he found you."

"It's called leaving, not running away."

"Oh? So he'd have been able to find you, then?"

Lena avoided her gaze, "he doesn't need me in his life, and if he's going to keep using his powers he's going to get hurt. I don't want to be around to see that."

"I don't want that either, but if I don't teach him how to control them he could end up getting hurt or hurting someone else."

"I realise that..."

"Do you? Because you gave him away without warning anyone that he's part-Kryptonian."

"He didn't have any powers when he was born!"

"And how soon after that did you hand him over?"

"There were complications when I went into labour and I only had Jack to help me. He kept us safe and looked after us. I couldn't give Jamie to the lawyer until I was better and everything was settled."

"You must have really trusted that Jack if you told him about Jamie."

"I was desperate. He had enough medical knowledge and what he didn't know he could find out, plus he had access to medical equipment. I didn't know what to expect - were Kryptonian pregnancies longer or shorter than ours, would painkillers endanger the baby? As it turned out, I could trust him. He's a good friend."

"Is that all?"

"What do you mean?"

"I think you know."

Lena rolled her eyes, "we're just friends. We've worked together on a few projects together since then, not under LCorp, and I like him but that's it."

"Do you ever regret breaking things off between us?"

"Kara..."

"Did you ever try to see me again after that?"

Lena stepped away from the bed, "you've got amnesia. All of these questions are coming from a different Kara than the one you're going to remember eventually."

"What does it matter if a teenage me wants to know? I'm always going to be the same person."

"No, you've grown up and had new life experiences, met new people. You might even be dating someone right now and just not remember them."

"And if I'm not?"

Lena shook her head, "I'm sorry Kara, but I just can't do this with you."

Kara watched Lena head towards the door, "and what about Jamie?"

"I put him in Eliza's care for a reason. We weren't ready to be parents and she's a wonderful mother. If you or she feel differently then it's up to you to work it out."

"What about you?"

"I'm going to visit Lex. I know he cares about me, despite everything else he's done/ Hopefully I can get him to promise not to hurt Jamie."

"And then?"

Lena shrugged, "I don't know. Nothing is going the way I planned lately."

"Try waking up with a chunk of your memory missing," Kara joked.

After opening the door, Lena took one last look back at Kara, "I really do hope you get your memory back soon."
