Oh, hey my muse is back for this fic! Prepare for angst!
TW: kidnapping, flashbacks, panic attacks (?) just to be safe
"Hello Mister Reynolds. I'm Captain Hagane, but you can call me Ryo,"
"Hagane?" Wales shook the older redhead's hand, "Are you related to Gingka?"
"You know my son?" Ryo perked up.
Wales nodded, and seemed to relax, "I've seen him around, down at Cadelle's."
"Well good! Detectives Tategami and Ootori will be conducting your interview," Ryo gestured for the man to follow him, and led him through the station. "We're glad you decided to come in, though I am a bit surprised it's so soon! You only spoke with Kyoya and Ryuga yesterday, yes?"
"I figured I should get it done and over with," Wales answered, with a grimace. "As much as I think about that day… Ryuga said this would probably leave me an emotional wreck, since the interview would be like watching a movie in real time. Rip the band aid off, is what I want to do."
Ryo nodded emphatically, "I understand." He knocked on a door they had come to, and then stepped in, "Detectives. Mister Reynolds is here."
Wales stepped in, and Kyoya stood up from a comfortable looking chair, "Thanks Captain. We've got it from here."
Ryo nodded, and gave Wales a smile before stepping out. The door slid shut behind him, and Wales refocused on the two detectives.
"Have a seat here on the couch, Wales, and we'll walk you through what'll happen," The silver headed detective motioned to a couch across from himself and Kyoya.
Wales did so, trying to hide his nerves by crossing his arms tightly over his chest. Tsubasa noticed, and gave him a smile, "It's normal to be nervous. Don't worry though. We'll be here with you every step of the way."
Wales only nodded, silent.
"Now, it's important to know you will be reliving a traumatic event," Tsubasa continued. "We'll be asking you to go back to the day of your brother's abduction, to relive every moment of it and try to get as many details as we can. You might find you've remembered a lot, but there may be details you have forgotten. This entire interview will be about things you sensed, just as much as the things you saw."
Another sharp nod, and a shaky inhale, "Can we just get this over with?"
Kyoya and Tsubasa exchanged a look, and Kyoya nodded, "Of course. Let's start easy. Close your eyes, and tell us… what is the first thing you remember?"
Wales took another deep breath, and closed his eyes.
A sharp scream pierced through the air, and Wales' head went up, "I hear Lucas scream. But it gets cut off."
"Cut off how?" Tsubasa asked.
"Like someone shut him up, so he wouldn't be heard. But it has my attention. I leave where I was counting and run to where I heard him. Lucas doesn't just scream like that," Wales answered. "He hasn't since before my mom and dad separated."
"Alright, good. Now, what do you see?" Kyoya spoke next.
"Nothing, at first. Just kids playing and parents talking. Mom is sitting on a bench, on the phone. I don't think she heard Lucas," Wales murmured. "I want to go to her, tell her…"
"She's where you feel safe," Tsubasa said. "But why don't you?"
"I hear… a muffled scream? I look to the other side of the park, where not many people are and… I see dad. He's got Lucas in his arms, face pressed in his shoulder. I wouldn't know it's them but Lucas… Lucas is wearing a jacket mom got him for his birthday the year before. It's bright blue."
"What happens next?"
"I don't have time to get mom. She won't hear me, she's too far away. I… I go after them," Wales inhaled shakily. "I… I try to grab him."
"Grab who?" Kyoya questioned.
"My dad," Wales whispered. "I start shouting at him, and hitting him, but he just… walks it off. He grabs my wrist and starts dragging me with him. His grip is tight- it hurts, it hurts—"
"Easy, you're not there anymore. Deep breaths, Wales," Tsubasa soothed. "What do you do next?"
"I… I keep asking myself, why isn't anyone doing anything? Shouldn't they hear me? He can't keep me quiet. Where's mom? I want my mom…"
"It's the bystander affect. People see things and think someone else will act first," Kyoya answered. "Focus on your dad, Wales. Do you notice anything about him?"
Wales swallowed, and forced himself to focus on his father, "I… He looks angry… upset." Wales' brow furrowed, "Strange…"
"What is?"
"His scent… He smells… like fuel… diesel fuel," Wales murmured. "He's never smelled like that. He always wears cologne."
"Is there anything else off about him?"
"He's muttering… I… I can't hear him, he's speaking too low," Wales paused, and listened harder. "Wait… no. A name… I got a name!"
"What is it, Wales?"
"Do… Dojo? No… No, that's not right- Doji!"
There was a sharp inhale, and then Tsubasa was speaking, "What happens next, Wales?"
"We're outside the park. I keep trying to get someone's attention or clawing at dad to get him to let us go, but… I'm not strong enough. So I bite him on the arm," Wales said. "He lets me go, throws me on the sidewalk. I hit my head and I… I think I black out for a minute, because the next thing I know there's a van pulling up on the curb."
"Tell me about the van, Wales," Tsubasa requested.
"It's… white. No markings. Sliding doors on the side… Dad starts shouting, and the door opens… wait… there's more than one person in the van! Someone's driving and someone opens the door,"
"Do you get a look at him? Come on, Wales, focus, what's he look like?"
"Tall… middle aged…" Wales' breath quickened, "He's wearing glasses. Dark hair, has a beard. Dad throws Lucas at him and he takes him. Dad climbs in and shuts the door. Before I can get up, the van's pulling away."
"Okay, Wales, I need you to focus for me, can you see the license plate?" Tsubasa asked, "Anything at all?"
"Uh—M… 7! I… I think S or 5… that's, that's all I get- I hear mom!"
"Alright, Wales, good. We're done," Tsubasa said, proudly.
Wales gasped and sat straight up, wide eyed, "Did- I remembered more."
Tsubasa was frantically scribbling on a notepad, grinning, "You did, Wales. More than what you first reported." He looked up, "Do you think you got a good enough look at the guy in the van to describe him to a sketch artist?"
Wales closed his eyes, and committed the man's face to memory, "Yes… Yeah, I think I can." He opened his eyes, and looked around, frowning, "Where'd Kyoya go?"
"He had to step out for a moment," Tsubasa waved it off. "Come on. Let's go grab our artist and we can get a sketch. Wales, you did good. This new information may lead us to new leads, and your dad."
"And Lucas?" Wales asked, hopefully, as he stood up.
Tsubasa gave him a bittersweet smile, "We'll see."
"Aren't you supposed to be on shift?" Kakeru asked, sidling up next to his brother, who was sitting at the bar. He waved at Chris, who nodded in return.
"Aren't you supposed to be resting that hand?" Kyoya muttered, and knocked back a shot of whiskey.
Kakeru stared at him, "I'm on back up vocal tonight. Ryuto's taking drums. Which, you'd know if you bothered to check your messages. I said I'd be home late tonight."
Kyoya grumbled but said nothing.
Chris walked over, "If I recall correctly, you don't get off work until six, Kyoya. Why are you here?"
"Can't a guy just drink in peace?"
"Not when it's four in the afternoon and you should be doing paperwork," Kakeru fired back. "Come on… is it a case you're working?"
At that, Chris got an alarmed look on his face. He glanced around, and leaned forward, voice low, "Is it Christina's case?"
"… Yes," Kyoya groaned. He held up his shot glass and gave Chris a pointed look. The blonde pulled out a bottle of Jack Daniels and another shot glass, pouring both the new glass and Kyoya's full, "Your sister's case connects to a cold case that isn't so cold anymore."
"Yeah?" Chris asked, and knocked back his shot, "Anyone I know?"
"That name Christina dropped?"
"Lucas Reynolds?"
"Mm. That's the one," Kyoya fell silent.
Kakeru tilted his head and narrowed his eyes, "There's more to it. What's wrong, Kyoya?"
Kyoya was silent for a long time, staring at the wooden countertop he had his elbows perched on. He sighed, "There's a chance Doji is involved."
Kakeru didn't say anything for a moment, and Kyoya cautiously looked to his right at his brother, only to see Kakeru was staring at nothing, eyes glazed over and one hand curled into a white knuckled fist.
"He's… He's… I…" Kakeru was starting to breathe hard, minute tremors running through his body, "No. That's… he—Kyoya."
"I said there's a chance," Kyoya hastened to calm his brother, reaching out to grab his shoulder and force him to sit on the stool next to him. "His name came up, that's all. It could be nothing."
"Nothing?!" Kakeru hissed, wild eyed, "How can you think it's nothing?! We both know what he's capable of, Kyoya—hell, he's part of the reason you even considered a career in law! Or Ryuga! Have you forgotten what he did to us?!"
"Uh, this sounds personal, so I'll just—" Chris turned away, but left the bottle of whiskey, as he busied himself with minor things.
"No, I haven't forgotten, 'Keru," Kyoya murmured. "And I know you haven't either. Just… you gotta trust me, okay tiger? I promise I won't let anything happen to you."
"You can't promise that, Kyoya," Kakeru said, weakly. "He… if he decides to come… to come after us…"
"He'll have a bigger fight on his hands than last time," Kyoya replied. "I promise. We'll all get through this just fine."
With an unsettling serious look on his face, Kakeru looked his brother in the eye, "Don't make promises you can't keep, Kyoya. Not when Doji isn't above murder to get what he wants."
ominous ending is ominous. what do you think doji's connection to kakeru and kyoya is?
hope you enjoyed and will leave a review! until next time, ciao!
