Chapter 8: I Was A Teenage Abomination
Mason and Luz made their way to the beach… it was a trek, But, not an altogether unpleasant one. The two humans were deep in discussion about the things Mason had missed while he was "staying" in the Boiling Isles.
So much had changed since he came to this place. He may as well have been gone for six years rather than six months.
"So tell me Mason who were you on earth?" Luz asked, hitting his shoulder. She had many different theory about why he could use magic. From being the son of a dragon to a blessing on his bloodline from the gods of old.
"Well I was born and raised in Salem Massachusetts. I helped my neighbors and did my best to make a living."
"Why'd you have to make a living? aren't you fourteen like me?"
"Because my dad lost his left leg during a hunting trip back when I was twelve."
"Wow, that's rough."
"Yeah, I did what I could to make life easy for him. Lucky for me that he was a war hero. Otherwise, I would've been put in foster care rather than enter the work force."
"Your dad's a war hero! Tell me more!" she beamed, a wide smile showing.
"I don't know Luz. it's not something I want to get into."
"Pwetty Pwease." she showed those big eyes, weakening Mason's guard. She added in a few sniffles in order to make him feel bad.
"Okay! I'll tell ya." he waved her off. "Where to start? Oh yeah, well my dad signed up for military service when he was eighteen. He joined the regiment with his older brother, my uncle Andrew."
"Wow, I love war stories."
"Yeah, it was pretty boring. My dad and uncle were positioned in the desert and they were out of things to do when not on watch. Then, bam! One of their squad-mates goes missing."
"What happened next?"
"Well they sent a search party for them of course. But they didn't find him. Both my dad and uncle were caught in a deadly sandstorm."
"A sandstorm! Cool!"
"I guess. But anyway, my uncle and father found a series of caves to shelter themselves in. Their goal was to wait for their platoon to find them or at the very least for the storm to pass. They figured worst case scenario they take a week to find them but…"
"But?"
"… It took them three years. My father couldn't leave the cave because Uncle Andrew was going mad. He couldn't even sit up it was that bad. Babbled about a bunch of nonsense."
"What happened to him?"
"One day, my dad woke up and found uncle Andrew was gone. His foot prints covered in the sand. My dad looked for my uncle but he never found him. The platoon found him half dead in the desert. They took my dad back to the base and helped him recover. They officially named Andrew dead a month later. But, my dad would never give up the search. He swore uncle Andrew was still out there and promised himself that he would find him."
"Well did he? Find him that is?" Luz Asked rubbing the back of her neck.
"No, and now he never will."
"Why?"
"Because he's too busy trying to maintain the household while I'm gone." Mason lied, looking into the distance.
Luz giggled as they were about to reach the coast "My mom has no idea I'm here. She thinks I'm at some boring summer camp. What about yours?"
"Huh?"
"Does your mom know where you are? If so, she must be really cool for letting you learn magic."
Mason looked down and stomped ahead ignoring Luz.
"Mason? Did I say something wrong?" Luz grabbed for his shoulder.
Mason shrugged off the attempt "It's fine, Luz." he grumbled, lying through his teeth "My mom doesn't care that I'm stuck in the boiling isles."
"Stuck?"
"Forget it." he grumbled as they reached the beachhead.
"Alright! We're here!" Eda exclaimed, she had beat both the youths to the beach and was standing by the dead body of a slug.
"Why are we here? You said something about a surprise." Mason asked.
"Are you gonna teach us magic!?" Luz exclaimed, her hands shaking in excitement.
"Yes and no." Eda replied "The surprise is this!" she motioned with her hands toward the giant beach lump.
"A dead slug is our surprise?" Mason asked, preparing to back away from the crazy witch "We're not gonna cook it, are we?"
"What? No!"
"Oh thank god."
"We're gonna cut it open and take whatever treasure lies in it's guts."
"Oh dear god no." Mason bent over and began to retch.
Eda tilted her head confused at the weird humans behavior. "Hey haven't you been here six months? How have you not seen a trash slug before?"
"I have spent most of my time in a castle. I have never seen something so grotesque or smelled for that matter."
"Well get used to it. let's get to cutting."
"I'm gonna pass." Mason said, running off holding his hand over his mouth because of the smell.
"Me too?" Luz added, but before she could leave Eda stopped her.
Mason watched the witch talk to her student and place something in her hand. Luz walked toward him and held the thing in her hand warily.
"What'cha got? Eda give you some witch item?" Mason asked.
"No she gave me a slime ball and told me good witches are resourceful." Luz replied, Showing the green orb that was inside the slug.
"Ugh, that smells terrible. I think I'm gonna be sick."
"Yeah it's not the best but I think it's kinda cool." Luz placed it in her pocket.
"So what do you want to do while Eda is busy playing doctor?"
"I want to explore. Can you be my tour guide to the Boiling Isles. You have been here a lot longer than me."
"Okay, I guess the best place to start is the local library. let's go!"
The duo ran through the woods and came upon a clearing. Luz was looking down worried.
"You okay Luz?"
"I just don't know if I can do magic."
"I think you can. I mean I did."
"Yeah but what if you have some magic bloodline. Like maybe you're a half witch or something."
"Listen Luz, I am human and only just a human. I can do magic. You are human. Which means you can learn to do magic too."
"You can do this. don't worry about it," A voice out of nowhere called.
"Exactly. Wait, who said that?" Mason looked around and saw no one.
"In the bushes," Luz said, crouching into the foliage.
Mason followed and when they came to the end they saw another clearing where a small yet rotund witch girl In the Hexside uniform. she paced beside a huge iron urn that Mason recognized as an abomination incubation jar.
"So what if you fail your exam? It's not a reflection on you as a witch. Your parents said that this track is full of opportunities?"
Just then, another urn crashed beside the witch girl's. On it was another Hexside student this one thin with green and amber hair.
"Oh Willow, I didn't see you there. I guess you're so unassuming that I didn't notice you."
"Hey Amity." Willow replied in a defeated tone.
"Well let's see your abomination." Amity exclaimed clapping her hands.
"Uh, okay." Willow traced a circle and said, "Abomination rise." her heart wasn't in it and the urn tipped over spilling the purple abomination ooze but it didn't Solidify into a humanoid form. It just pooled on the ground.
"Oh Willow. This is why everyone calls you Half-A-Witch Willow. Don't worry I think someone has something to say to make you feel better." Amity went to her urn and did the same thing as Willow "Abomination rise."
Out of the jar came a perfect abomination exactly the same quality as Mason could do. It stuck out it's finger to Willow's head and traced a star while saying, "You're a superstar." in it's guttural tone.
"Alright I should go. Good luck superstar." Amity called, riding her urn to the school.
When she was gone and out of ear shot Mason heard Willow stomp her foot crushing a flower.
When she noticed what she had done she bent down and cradled the broken daisy "Oh no! Little friend! I'm so sorry." She traced a circle and the plant shot up to life. "Good luck super star," she said in a mocking voice "Gah, Amity makes me so mad!" Willow's eyes began to glow green and Mason felt a strong yet familiar power.
His heart was thumping louder and louder. It was hitting his rib cage, each beat made the boy gasp for air. This feeling… it's just like the throne room. It hurts. He thought bending over and having to fight not to scream.
"Mason are you Ok–Ah" Luz was grabbed by a vine pulling her toward Willow. The plant life was going wild and Mason had to fight to get up.
"Stop," When he spoke his voice was surprisingly calm. At his command the vines fell dead and the green plant life returned to its stationary position. Willow's eyes still glowed green and Mason felt her power radiate toward him. But, it was futile he was stronger.
"Wow, when do I get to learn that?" Luz asked, untying her foot from the vine.
Both Mason and Willow snapped out of their trance and looked at each other.
"Oh I'm so sorry. When I get angry I lose control of my powers." Willow apologized.
"It's okay. you're pretty strong. Why do you let bullies treat you like that." Mason said between gasps for breath.
"I'm not even supposed to do plant magic."
"Well you're good at it. Why are you even in abominations?"
"My parents wanted me to enroll in it. The abomination track has the best opportunities."
"Hi my name is Luz. what's yours?" Luz asked putting herself between Mason and the witch.
"Willow or as everyone at school calls me: Half-A-Witch Willow. Gah," she stamped her foot again and growled but was stopped when she fell backward.
Mason caught her. She leaned against him looking up groggily.
"Wow, I don't usually faint after one of my fits. I must have been really angry. I'm sorry you had to see that," she apologized again and began to rubbing her temple "My head is killing me."
"I might have remedy for that, if you'll let me try it," Mason offered.
"Is it some kinda healing magic?" She asked.
"Some would say so," Mason winked at her.
"Okay? Do it," Willow said, blushing.
Mason began humming a tune as he walked behind Willow. he placed both his middle and trigger fingers to her temples and began rubbing them in a circle.
Willow let out a soft moan and leaned into Mason.
"Wow, you really know how to massage someone. Did you have a girlfriend who needed her headaches treated or something?" Luz asked, blushing at the display.
"No, my dad was in constant pain after he lost his leg. I picked up my massage skills from a book and i perfected them by practicing on my dad. It was a temporary solution, but it gave him some relief so I'd say it was worth it." Mason finished his massage and Willow regained her senses leaping away from Mason "You feeling any better?" he asked
"Y-yes th-thank you." Willow said, flustered with cheeks red from embarrassment.
"Well if they ever spring up again. Let me know."
"I-i w-will th-thank you." she stumbled over her words. "I'm sorry but I have to go. I'm gonna be late for school."
"School? As in magic school? As in school where you learn to cast spells magic school!?" Luz voice was getting higher and higher as she spoke.
"Oh no Luz, I know what you're thinking. The answer is no!"
"But, why!" she groaned turning her head sideways.
"Because it's too dangerous for a human like you. What if they find you and try to dissect you."
Luz once again broke out the big eyes and quivering lip. "Pwetty."
"No Luz. it's not gonna work this time."
A few sniffles exited her lips as a couple tears began to form. "pwease."
"Y-you ca-can st-stop now. it's not gonna affect me." Mason turned his back crossing his arms, his resolve was depleting.
Luz rubbed her head against his back as she cuddled up and purred like cat.
"God damn it, fine!" Mason shouted in defeat.
"Yay!" Luz jumped up and down turning toward Willow. "Can you break us into your school?"
Willow rubbed the back of her neck looking down. "I don't know Luz it's like your friend said; it would be dangerous and I could be expelled."
"What if I went in disguise?"
"As what?" Mason asked.
Luz looked down at the abomination goop and began smearing it on herself.
"What are you doing?"
Luz ignored him and when she was finished she was covered head to toe in purple goop. "Now I look like a weird abomination and you can take me to class."
"Luz that will never work? Willow tell her!"
Willow scratched her head and looked at Luz for a minute "It just might. Okay Luz you can go to school with me. But, you have to promise to behave, Okay?"
"Scouts honor!" Luz Exclaimed.
"Uh, Okay," Willow replied confused, "Get in the jar," she commanded
Luz did as she was told and sat in the urn.
"Are you coming along too. Uh, I don't think I got your name?" Willow asked gesturing toward the human boy.
"It's Mason and yes, I can't risk Luz getting hurt, so I have to go."
"Okay. I'll be glad to have you? That came out wrong! I mean I'll be glad to show you around. I mean, I would love to show you to my classroom. I mean– gah!" She swatted her head and looked very cute.
"Alright Honey bee it's time to go to school."
"Honey bee? that's not my name. Why are you calling me honey bee?"
"It's a nickname. And as to why I'm calling you that is because you are very excitable and cute, like a honey bee."
At that Willow's entire face went red and she covered her head with her collar "Okay let's get going."
The trio walked toward the huge campus of Hexside. Mason remembered it from when he signed up for the next semester.
"How are we going to get you past Principal Bump?" Willow Asked.
"I have an idea." Mason walked up to the principal was at the top of stairs watching the students enter the academy.
"Ah, Mason it is good to see you. What brings you to Hexside today?" He asked.
"Hey Principal Bump I just wanted to check out the school."
"Oh of course! I should've figured you were an overachiever. You want to get a jump-start on your induction into the academy. Very well I'll need to assign you an escort though. how about Amity Blight? She is our top student after all."
"Uh, actually Principal Bump how about Willow instead? I was told by my master that she would be ideal. You know she's a family friend." Mason stuttered. An idea struck him like lightning though as he placed his hand casually on the principals shoulders "I would be really comfortable with her as my guide."
Principal Bump gently removed Mason's hand from his shoulder confused. "Okay, I will let Willow know. Oh there she is."
"Hello Principal Bump. How are you?" Willow said dragging her urn behind her.
"I'm fine Ms. Park. This is Mason he is a ward of the Emperor's Coven and has asked that you specifically give him a tour of the school." Principal Bump leaned in close to Willow's ear "Don't embarrass us in front of the Emperor's Coven representative."
"O-okay, yes sir," Willow replied, sweat beading on her neck.
The trio went into the school and came upon the home room. Inside was a teacher that looked like a bird dressed in bluish white robes.
"Good morning class. Today we are preparing for final exams. So get out your number two pencil and turn to page 333 of your beginners spell book and copy down every spell until you have reached page 402." She said, pointing on the chalk board with a ruler.
The intercom suddenly blared out a loud screech and Principal Bump's voice came out of the device. "Attention students, today we are blessed with a ward from the Emperors Coven."
"Oh no." Mason groaned, putting his head down on the table covering himself with his arms.
"His name is Mason Fairweathers and you are to be on your best behavior around him. Treat him the same way you would anyone in the Emperors Coven. I have posted a list of the classes he will be attending today in case any of you who are his future class mates wish to inform him on the way of life here at Hexside. Also today's lunch will be tater tots and pizza rolls that is all."
"Kill me now." Mason was shaking his head.
The heads of all the students turned to the newcomer and looked on in awe.
Mason felt a tap on his shoulder and when he lifted his head he saw it was the teacher.
"Uh, Yes Ma'am."
"It would mean a lot if you would demonstrate the spells the students are copying. You know, since you've already mastered them as a ward of the Emperors Coven."
"Uh, I don't know. I don't think it's my place."
"C'mon Mason, I want to see you do it." Willow nudged his shoulder.
"Willow, I don't feel comfort–" Mason was stopped by Willow showing him the big sad eyes with the quivering lip "Don't you start that crap too. Fine I'll do it."
"Excellent, come to the front." the teacher grabbed Mason by the arm and led him to the center of the classrooms attention. "When you're ready." she instructed.
Mason then read from the textbook and traced the circles perfectly. Drawing the awe of the crowd. After the display was done Mason took a bow.
The teacher clapped her hands "Wonderful, Wonderful. Good job Mr. Fairweathers." she cheered and the rest of the class did the same. "Now it's only fair that since you are going to be attending classes that the students be allowed to ask you some questions."
The students began raising their hands vying for the attention of Mason.
The boy was overwhelmed by the attention and took a breath as he chose one student at random and it was a crescent moon headed student.
"Are you a human?"
The students groaned at the question thinking it dumb.
"Uh yes, yes I am."
A collective gasp came from the class and this caused the remaining students to be more enthusiastic.
"Okay you in the front." a weakly looking student beamed at the attention.
"If you are a human how can you do magic?"
"I was lucky enough to be born with a natural talent for it." Mason lied he had to keep as much about his life hidden as possible because Luz was within earshot.
The students continued their jockeying for Mason's attention.
"You in the back." Mason pointed at the thin witch girl with pale green hair.
"Do you have a girlfriend? And if not are you looking for one?"
"Uuuuuuhhhhh… next question."
And so on the boy was bombarded with questions until the bell had rung. Mason and Willow walked out of the class and had to deal with the gawking of the other students.
"God I feel like a freak," he groaned walking close to Willow.
"Tell me about it. At least they like you," Willow replied.
"They like me for my position. Not for who I am as a person."
"Speaking of which why didn't you tell me you were a ward of the emperor."
"it's not something I'm proud of. I would rather just be a normal kid. I hate all the pressure of being a celebrity. I just can't live up to the hype."
"I think you're pretty cool and I'm glad that you wanted to help me."
"Of course, I like you a lot."
Willow blushed and looked at Mason confused "Do you mean that?"
"Yeah I do."
As the two made their way to abomination class they were stopped by a small witch boy with dark skin who was thumbing through a magazine.
"Willow did you hear that humans put torture implements in their kid's mouths." the kid said showing Willow the picture of a girl with braces.
"Oh hey Augustus how are you? Still reading the tabloids I see."
"How can a human do that to their child."
"it's actually an important tool for dental hygiene." Luz said in the jar.
"Ah, your abomination has come to life on its own. Burn It!"
Willow looked around and leaned in "Gus I'm gonna tell you a secret but you can't tell anyone. Okay."
"Uh, okay."
"Abomination rise." at Willow's command Luz jumped out of the jar and gave a bow.
"Ta-da!" she exclaimed covered in purple goop.
Gus gasped when he saw that Luz had round ears "A-a h-human! A human in the Boiling Isles. This is incredible!?"
"Yeah it is. My name's Luz by the way. How's it hanging?"
"I'm Augustus and I would love to ask you some questions."
"Gus that can wait. Luz is pretending to be my abomination and I'm almost late for class."
"See you later Gus." Luz called as she was led to the classroom.
The class was quite interesting. The many different abominations were all imperfect in one way or the other. But they were nothing that Mason hadn't done himself at one point in his abomination magic training. The teacher was a small dolphin faced man who was being carried by his abomination. He scolded all the poorly crafted abominations and their creators which reminded Mason of how Lilith had treated him every time he failed in creating them.
When it came time for Willow to show hers he was blown away. He was so impressed he tore the top student badge from Amity and gave it to Willow. This upset the green haired witch. But the bell finally rang and it was time for lunch.
At the lunch table Mason sat with Willow trying very hard to ignore the students gossiping about him.
"Psst, Luz. I manged to grab some extra due to the cook being impressed with my being an Emperor's Coven ward." Mason slid the food into Luz's grasping arms as he lowered the tray into her jar.
"It's so cool that you can get anyway with anything Mason." Willow said amazed.
"That's what you think. it's annoying surrounded by a bunch of kiss ups who don't really care about you."
"At least they're nice to you and don't call you a half witch." Willow looked down, saddened by the memories of her treatment.
Mason placed his hand reassuringly on the young witches shoulder "Look at me. This kind of praise, you don't want it. Because it's not real. They only say the things they do because they fear what would happen to them if I got offended from their silence. Admiration based on fear is not sustainable."
Willow stared at Mason. "You know what. You're right."
"Besides, I think you're cool and I would love to be your friend next semester when I come here."
"Really!?" she beamed with a huge grin.
This made Masons heart skip a beat, "Of course."
Willow wrapped Mason in a hug. Snuggling her nose into his chest. "Thank you."
Mason shot up and walked away.
"Mason? Did I do something wrong?" Willow asked confused.
"No, no. it's just… I need to stretch my legs. I'll be back." Mason walked up to the concession table and tried to clear his head. I don't know what's coming over me. But when I see her I can't help but feel weak at the knees. When she's happy I feel good. If she cries my heart aches. What the hell! He thought confused at what was happening to him.
The slap of a tray being slammed on the table awoke Mason from his trance. When he turned his head he saw her. Amity Blight.
"Uh, can I help you?" He asked.
Amity Blight glared at the boy "Yeah, you can tell me why you're hanging out with Half-A-Witch Willow?"
"What's my relationship with Willow have to do with you?"
"I'm just looking out for you. you're an Emperor's Coven ward and I don't want to see you get dragged down by Willow's bad reputation. I think it would be better if you hung out with me and my friends. Come on, take my hand and I'll show you to them." She stuck out her hand and waited for him to take it.
"No," Mason said, pushing past her.
"What!? How dare you! I'm trying to help." her face was completely red. She was scowling at the impudent boy.
"Thanks but no thanks. I don't need the help of two-faced witches." Mason returned to his table and saw Willow staring at him.
"Uh, what did Amity want."
"Oh you know, trying to kiss up like all the rest. Tried getting me to sit with her friends."
"Maybe you should."
"Huh, why'd you say that?"
"Because I'm not that good at magic. I'm just Half-A-Witch Willow."
Mason cupped her chin and looked her in the eye. "Listen I may not have known you long. But you are sweet and kind, I l– really like you, okay?"
Willow once again blushed and giggled when Mason bopped her nose. "Thanks I needed that."
The lunch bell rang and the group went back to their class rooms. Mason watched as Willow left and smiled. a moment later he had realized something oh shit! I'm in love. He thought as he walked into the third period classroom.
––––––––––––
"Finally! It's all over," Mason said wiping sweat from his brow. This was the longest day I have ever had to endure. He thought. No more kiss-ups and undue praise. Just need to get out of here. This day has been absolutely terrible.
"Mason?" Willow asked, tapping him on the shoulder.
Well it's not all bad. He thought thinking of Willow. "Yes honey bee?"
"I think it's time for you and Luz to leave."
"Yeah, you're right. Do you wanna hang out sometime?'
"I'd like that." Willow leaned into Mason and was about to whisper something to him
Just then a door swung open and Principal Bump came into the classroom. He was followed by Amity Blight wearing a smirk. "Ah, Miss Park. I hear you have made a new discovery in abomination magic. I would love to see it."
"Uh, okay. Abomination–"
Bump raised his hand "Oh that won't be necessary. I know how to command an abomination. Abomination rise."
Luz did as he commanded.
"Abomination Lie."
"Internet fame is totally a viable career choice, the ice caps aren't melting." Luz blabbered.
"Huh, weird that it got the command wrong. I meant lie down."
Luz did as instructed.
"Now I plan to see what this discovery is made of."
"Uh, Principal Bump I have the list of ingredients right here."
"No, no Willow. I want to see what makes this abomination different… personally." he drew a knife from his cloak and was preparing to make an incision "Oh you know what Willow. It's your creature how's about you do the dissection."
Willow mumbled under her breath and sweated.
"What's wrong Willow? it's just an abomination?" Amity asked smirking.
Willow came up to Luz with a knife "Can humans survive being cut open."
Luz shook her head and looked scared.
"Oh my God! Someone set the principals tower on fire!" Mason screamed.
"What!? Impossible!" Bump exclaimed.
"See for yourself." Mason pointed out of the window where his illusion of a fire engulfed the principals tower.
"Oh no! my tower! My dollies are in there!" Bump said drawing confused expressions from all in attendance "I know what I said and I'm completely comfortable with who I am." he exclaimed proud.
"Amity you're in charge until I get back and don't cut that abomination until I return." Bump rushed out of the door.
"Yes sir." she replied when he was gone she turned her gaze to Willow "you're gonna get found out when this monster is cut open and you'll be expe–" she was hit by a sleep spell and fell unconscious.
"Mason? Thank you." Luz said, swiping sweat from her brow.
"Willow, get Luz out of here now."
"What about you?'
"I'll be fine, just go!"
Willow nodded her head and led Luz out of the classroom.
Mason then put a sleep spell on himself but not before sending an illusion of Willow to get Principal Bump so she can say that the creature put him and Amity to sleep.
–––––––––––––––––––
When Mason awoke he was in the healers office.
"Huh, what's going on?" he feigned, trying to sound confused.
"Mason! you're okay. I'm so glad that creature didn't kill you!" Willow exclaimed hugging the boy.
Bless her heart. She's playing along. Mason thought.
"Yes luckily Willow defeated the beast and cast it out using Plant magic." Principal Bump explained "Which is why I'm moving her to the plant magic track." He traced a circle and Willow's sleeves and pant legs turned from purple to green.
"That's amazing!" Mason exclaimed "Is your office okay. Principal Bump?"
"Oh yes, turns out it was just a prank from one of the students. I don't know who but I'll find out eventually. And when I do." he groaned in frustration.
"Ahem." Amity cleared her throat from the door. "Willow you can leave now, I want to talk with Mason… alone."
"Okay Amity. I guess I'll be off." Willow kissed Masons cheek "See you later Sweet William."
Ah she gave me a nickname Mason thought as he turned his gaze toward Amity now unto the unpleasant discussion with Amity.
"Listen Mason, I know you don't like me. But, you'll see that Willow is no good for you. I'll give you one week to say goodbye and then I demand that you come talk with me and my friends. They maybe mean but they're actually pretty cool. If you give them half a chance."
"And if I refuse."
"Then it won't end well for Half-A-Witch Willow."
Amity walked off leaving Mason shaking. I won't let anything happen to her. You can threaten me all you want but I will never be your friend, Amity. it was strange, this feeling of protectiveness over a witch he had known for all of a day, but Mason knew it was true. It was the same feeling he had whenever he was close to his sister… The sister he had failed.
