Chapter 8: Of Castles and Classes
It was the first day at Hogwarts and a Monday, the 2nd of September 1991. Harry woke up early as he was used to. His dorm-mates were still sleeping. So, he used this opportunity to use the bathroom at a leisure pace.
Harry and Nero came down to the common room to find that there were only a few upper classmen and Hermione Granger up and ready to tackle the day. Hermione and Percy Weasley were deep in a conversation about classes and such. Nero was trotting behind Harry. Upon spotting Harry, Percy wished him a good morning.
"Good morning Harry, Had a good night's rest,"
"Good Morning, Percy and yes I did. The beds are really comfortable." Harry wished back.
"You are Harry Potter. I am Hermione Granger. We didn't get a chance to meet last night. This is my starter Azurill. If you don't remember, we even met on the train but you didn't introduce yourself. Did you know that you are mentioned in Wars and Dark Lords, Rise and Fall of the dark, and Important Events of the 20th Century. I have read all about you. There are even fiction books with you as a protagonist. Do you wear glasses? It is said in the books that you wear glasses."
Harry meanwhile was looking uncomfortable at staring at Percy asking for help. Percy intervened, "Please slow down Miss Granger, Let Harry have a chance to speak." And then Percy looked at Harry as if indicating it was his turn to speak.
"Umm... I am Harry Potter, and this is Nero, my starter. I know I am mentioned in Wars and Dark Lords. I don't know about the rest. I know about the fiction books and I don't have anything to do with them. I didn't introduce myself on the train because I don't like people gawking at me. And I don't wear glasses, I used to but I don't anymore." Harry replied.
"All right." Percy interrupted before Hermione could ask anymore questions. "Let us go down for breakfast."
Harry and Hermione nodded and they followed Percy to the great Hall. "Breakfast is served from 6:30 am to 9:00 am on the weekdays and from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on the weekends. However, since classes start at 7:30 am, it is best to grab breakfast early so as to not be in a rush. Lunch is served from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is best to grab lunch whenever you have a break in between classes. Dinner is fixed from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Attendance at dinner is mandated. All the important announcements are made during dinner. This is the best way from the Gryffindor dorms to the Great Hall. Hogwarts maybe seem confusing at first but within the first few weeks you will be navigating these hallways like a pro." Percy advised
Harry listened to the older boy and made a mental note of all the important points he mentioned. Percy Weasley was a font of information and also someone who was eager to share the information. As Harry approached the great hall, Nero followed behind him.
"Harry, over here," Susan and Hannah called out to him. Harry looked over and saw them seated over at the Hufflepuff table. He saw Hermione and Percy walk away towards the Gryffindor table. He wanted to join his friends but he wasn't sure of he was allowed to. He reluctantly approached the teachers table where he saw Prof. Mcgonagall sitting and chatting with another female professor.
"How may I help you, Mr. Potter?" Prof. McGonagall asked him before Harry had a chance to ask his own question.
"Ummm… Professor, I was hoping I could sit at the Hufflepuff table with my friends." Harry asked while pointing at Susan and Hannah who were still waving at him.
"There is no rule against sitting at other house tables for meals, Mr. Potter, but I was hoping that you would sit at the Gryffindor table this morning as I have to hand out your class schedules."
"Oh!" Harry seemed downcast.
"Let him enjoy breakfast with his friends Minerva" The female professor, sitting next to Prof. McGonagall interjected. "I am Professor Sprout, Mr. Potter. I am the head of the Hufflepuff house and teach botany and flora."
Harry looked at McGonagall hopefully. "Fine, you may sit, with your friends. Here take your class schedule." Prof McGonagall handed Harry a piece of paper. Harry took the paper and gave her a beaming smile. Harry rushed towards the Hufflepuff table and Nero followed him, barking excitedly.
"He looks so much like James Potter and his eyes are so like Lily's." Prof Sprout commented to Prof. McGonagall. "And Oh my! Is that a houndour. I didn't know Ollivanders was handing out dark types again."
"You know, I don't care about the dark type nonsense Pomona."
"I know that, neither do I, but you cant deny that this wont make waves, Harry Potter coming to Hogwarts with a dark type starter." Prof. Sprout finished before going back to her breakfast.
"Harry, what were you doing at the teachers table." Susan asked
"I was just asking for permission to sit here for breakfast. God is the food here like this every day." Hary replied pointing to the spread on the table. There was toast, eggs both friend and scrambled, sausages, kippers, blood pudding, oatmeal, beans, and so much more.
"So, you got the permission, nice. You can now sit here every day. And you have got Nero too. Hi Nero," Susan said.
Nero barked in response. Harry had already fed Nero his breakfast so just gave him some bacon.
Susan also introduced Harry to the other Hufflepuffs, namely Justin Finch-Fletchely, Earnest Macmillan, Zacharias Smith, Rogewr Malone, Wayne Hopkins for the boys and Sally Anne-Perks, Megan Jones and Emma Vane. They also introduced their starters. All their starters were small enough to attend breakfast. Harry was surprised that the entirety of Hufflepuff first years were present. Apparently, Hufflepuffs were early risers, not unexpected for the house known for hard-work. Most of them were either too intimidated at the sight of him and Nero, or too shy or too disinterested. Zacharias Smith bragged in a pompous voice, about how he was descended from The Helga Hufflepuff, everyone else rolled their eyes at that.
"How was your morning," Hannah asked while eating eggs herself and feeding some toast to Happiny.
"I met Hermione Granger in the common room. She asked me a bunch of questions like why I don't know the books I am mentioned in, why I don't wear glasses, Why I didn't tell her who I was on the train?"
"God, I think the girl has no tact." Hannah replied
"Where is Pluto," Harry asked
"He is sleeping. I think he was up the whole night guarding my bed. I had to return him in the morning."
"He is just worried." Harry assured her. "New place and all, he will calm down in a few days."
"Harry, I have to ask, why don't you have glasses, All of Albion knows that Harry Potter has messy black hair, a scar on the forehead, captivating green eyes, flies a dragonite and wears glasses?" Susan asked in a swooning and teasing manner, while batting her eyes.
Harry laughed out loud, at Susan's facial expression and replied, "Well I don't know, about the Dragonite or my captivating eyes, but I used to wear glasses. We had a medical camp at our school and the doctor there pointed out that my eyes were still developing and wearing glasses while they would help in the sort term, would make me dependent on the long term, so I stopped wearing glasses. It took me a few months to adjust, but my eyes got better. So now no glasses."
"That sounds insane." Susan said skeptically. Harry just shrugged.
As they ate breakfast Hilda swooped down in the great Hall and landed on Harry shoulders.
"Harry, your mail HootHoot is here, but she has no mail." Hannah asked.
"Hilda is more that a mail Hoothoot, she is my friend and she dropped by to say hi." Harry said while stroking Hilda. Hilda affectionately rubbed her head against Harry's and nipped at his fingers while he fed her some bacon.
"So whats your schedule like." Susan asked
"Let me see. I have Pokemon Behavior first and then followed by geography and navigation. After Lunch I have History and Battling." Harry replied.
"Wow thats a full Monday. We have Potions today the whole Morning and then Navigation and Geography." Susan said
"Let me check, I have that same schedule on Friday. It also says that I have biology and flora is with Hufflepuff." Harry said.
"Sweet so we have two classes together." Susan smiled.
Breakfast was almost over for them and it was time for the first class. Harry, Susan and Hannah walked out of the great Hall.
"Harry, Hilda is still on your shoulders."
Harry shrugged, Hilda would stay till she felt like it.
As they were leaving the Great Hall. Ron, Neville, Dean and Thomas came rushing in to the great Hall.
"Harry mate, you are here, lets go get breakfast." Ron said ignoring Susan and Hannah.
"Thanks Ron but I have already had breakfast, and I am on my way to the first class. There are only fifteen minutes left."
Ron ignored him and rushed to eat breakfast with Dean and Seamus.
"I will walk with you to class, if you don't mind." Neville asked.
Susan and Hannah who had to go in the other direction, left saying goodbye saying they would meet for lunch at noon.
"Are you sure you will skip breakfast Neville."
"Yeah, I am not that hungry," Neville said but then tuned red when his stomach grumbled.
Harry stared laughing and then pulled out a wrapped package from his pockets and handed it to Neville. Inside were a couple to buttered toasts and some sausages and bacon slices.
"Something I was saving for Nero, old habit. but now that we are stopping for lunch I wont need it. Go ahead." Harry said handing the package to Neville.
"Harry when did you wake up?"Neville asked
"I was up at 6:00 am. I am used to waking up early. I didn't wake you guys up, because I didn't know if you wanted to sleep in."
"Please wake me up from tomorrow as well. I would like to get breakfast before class." Neville requested.
"No Problem, Neville. Now here take the food. You can eat as we walk."
Neville gratefully accepted and then they walked towards the Behavior classroom with Hilda on Harry shoulder. After a few wrong turns and false starts and with copious directions from upperclassmen and friendly ghosts Harry and Neville arrived at the Behavior classroom. The classroom was empty except for 2 girls in Slytherin uniform, sitting on the row rightmost corner. Harry and Neville took a seat in the leftmost corner. On the teachers table in front sat a regal looking Persian completely still.
"Wow a Persian", Harry stated.
"Aren't they kinda common," Neville asked
"They may be common but it doesn't mean that they are any less cool."
On Nevilles inquisitive look Harry continued. "Persians are normal types, and people generally underestimate normal types. Normal types may sound boring but they have only one weakness and can learn a variety of moves. Persians for example can learn thunderbolt, icy wind, power gem, shadow claw among others alongside the normal-types moves they naturally learn. Normal type pokémon are very versatile and well rounded. And look at that Persian, its coat is exquisite, whiskers are prominent and that gem is glowing. Normally meowth and Persian are really fidgety pokémon by nature. Sitting so still also shows that, this pokémon has mastered its basal instincts. It's a very well raised and powerful pokémon."
Neville and the two girls were listening intently.
"Wow Harry, are you are you are not the teacher. You know loads of stuff." Neville asked jokingly.
"I don't know everything, I just know some stuff about some pokémon." Harry said rubbing his head.
"Still that is very impressive Mr. Potter, I am Daphne Greengrass and this is my friend Tracy Davis."
"I am Harry Potter and this is my friend Neville Longbottom."
Neville and Daphne nodded towards each other while Tracy looked like she was bursting with questions. The class slowly started to fill in. The Slytherins sat on the right side behind Daphne and Tracy and the Gryffindors behind Harry and Neville.
Hermione took a seat besides Daphne and Tracy clearly not understating the house dynamics. Harry and Neville were alone in the first row.
Finally five minutes past 7:30 am, Ron, Dean and Seamus came running in. "Thanks Arceus, McGonagall isn't here. I have heard she is super strict." Ron whispered to his Dean and Seamus. "Harry, what are you doing down there mate? Come join us in the back row. We will chill."
In a truly astounding sight, the Persian sitting on the table leapt up and turned into Prof. Mcgonagall. Harrys jaw hit the floor. It literally couldn't go any lower. Even Hilda who was rarely surprised, stared at the Prof with her eyes wide open, even wider than they usually were. Nero however was unaware to the impossibility of what had just happened and was calmly snoozing at Harrys feet.
"I am strict Mr. Weasley. And I hope you are not planning to chill in my class or I will have you standing outside in a moment." McGonagall said sternly.
"and thank you for the kind words of praise Mr. Potter." Harry face was red in embarrassment. The mixture of astonishment and embarrassment left Harry a stuttering mess.
"Mr. Potter, your HootHoot is sitting on your head." McGonagall said before she could continue. Harry looked up, Hilda had moved on top of his head, from his shoulders.
"She pretty much does whatever she wants Professor. I can't seem to win an argument with her." Harry stammered. Hilda hooted as if agreeing with Harry.
"She is welcome to stay in my class, but she can't stay on your head, she is obstructing the view of students behind you."
Hilda hooted and flew up to the rafters but still had her eyes glued to the class.
"All right class, I know you have questions, but I will talk about the matter in the last 10 minutes of class. Now let's start todays lesson."
"As it says on your schedule, the class I teach is on Pokémon Behavior. This class is compulsory till your fifth year and we will address not only the dynamics of pokémon human relationship but also pokémon-pokémon relationship."
"Today we will start with something basic. Establishing a rapport with your starter."
Prof. McGonagall talked about the nature of starter pokémon. What they were? How a starter was different from other pokémon a trainer would train? How it was important to establish a relationship with your pokémon before starting to train them. This was all very dry and boring in Harrys opinion, but he took down some notes nonetheless. Harry noticed that Hermione who was sitting in the same row as him was furiously scribbling in her notebook. She was so busy that she was not paying attention to Azurill, who being a baby was easily distracted. Harry took the opportunity to make faces at the Azurill, which made the baby giggle. McGonagall heard this and gave Harry a glare. Which made him go back to taking notes.
"Now class its time for some practice, call out your starter on the table in front of you."
Students called out their pokémon and those who already had them out put them on their table. Harry nudged the sleeping Nero with his foot and with a shake of his head, Nero jumped on the table and sat on his haunches facing Harry. McGonagall was staring at Harry with a sharp eye.
"All right students, your first job is to make your pokémon sit and stand, on command. Call out your pokémon to stand and then sit. Be firm but be gentle."
Sit and Stand, this was not what Harry was expecting. Seriously sit and stand! He was not sure what to expect of this class, but to ask Nero to sit and stand!
"Nero," Harry lazily pointed to his pokémon, "Stand" Nero stood up on all fours and started looking around for any threats.
"Nero." "Sit", Nero sat down on haunches and then slowly sunk onto his stomach. Harry laughed at that and patted Nero on the back.
McGonagall meanwhile was staring at Harry in surprise.
"Well done Mr. Potter. 10 points to Gryffindor."
Harry nodded then looked around. Turns out the class was not useless. Every other student was facing enormous difficulties. It was hilarious watching Granger say, sit, sit, sit from different directions, with her face scrunched up. Azurill being a baby would either look at her blankly or giggle and jump op on its tail. Tracy Davis pikachu would just jump on her face.
Some students were having more luck than others but that was mostly because their pokémon didn't have feet or weren't capable of standing up in the traditional sense. McGonagall had gone to each of these students and slightly modified the commands. Like asking a pair of geodudes to roll forward and backwards, or asking an ekans to coil and uncoil. Draco Malfoy had some scorpion looking pokémon, that seemed particularly uncooperative leaving Malfoy red in the face. So much for "exotic foreign pokémon". A boy with a sneasel was the next best after Harry.
Neville's cyndaquil was also particularly stubborn. She seemed to outright ignore Neville but then again Neville was also being really timid.
Harry decided to help, "Neville you have to have more confidence. Be firm."
Neville was clearly frustrated that nothing was working.
"Here let me show you." Harry tapped on the table to get cyndaquils attention and then with a firm stare and an unflinching, sharp tone, Harry said, "Sit."
Not only did cyndaquil but also the buneary and skitty behind him and the Azurill planted themselves on the table.
"See this is how its done. Dark types and fire types are the most difficult to train after dragon types. They are willful and impulsive even from a young age. You have to have confidence. Young pokémon will always think that you are playing with them, unless you make it clear that you are not. Be firm but not threatening. New pokémon will often test their owners resolve."
"Well said, Mr. Potter, 20 points to Gryffindor, and now that Mr. Potter had said exactly what needs to be done. There are 10 minutes left in the class. And I promised I would answer any questions."
Harry was the first to raise his hands in the air.
McGonagall nodded in his direction.
Harry just had one word
"How?"
"what you just witnessed in the beginning of the class was the most advanced form of the pokemorph technique. Pokemorphing into a pokémon is the epitome of what you will learn in this class, in your years at Hogwarts. It is extremely rare and including me there are only 11 known practitioners in all of Kanto, Johto and Hoenn. Now I won't go into too much detail. But the ability stems from the unification theory. The theory that states that human and pokemons have the same origin, therefore having distinct biological markers. Understanding and manipulating these markers gives humans Pokémon like abilities. Other than pokemorphs there are also abilities like aura, psychics, iron body which have similar origins."
A bell rang indicating the end of class. "Okay, students the class ends here. Practice basic commands and do the assigned reading. We will meet again next class. Mr. Potter please stay back."
Neville looked at Harry questioningly. Harry shrugged indicating he didn't know.
"Do you want me to wait?" Neville asked
"Nah… go ahead to the next class. It is geography and navigation with Prof. Sinistra. Save me a seat preferably in the front and away from Weasley." Harry said. Neville nodded and left.
"Mr. Potter, I am an expert in Pokémon behaviour, and you may not know this but I am also an expert in fire type Pokémon. Your Houndour does not behave like a starter Pokémon. In fact he behaves like an experienced Pokémon. This is something I can't wrap my head around since he also looks rather young, younger than other starters in class. Also the way you commanded your Houndour and the other Pokémon is something I have never seen in a first year student, let alone a first year student on their very first day." Prof McGonagall said.
Harry sighed, this was something both Ollivander and Hagrid had warned him about. "I am sorry Professor, but both Mr. Ollivander and Hagrid have warned me not to say anything about it."
"Anything you will say will be in my complete confidence. Mr. Potter. As both your Prof. And head of your house I can assure you."
Harry told Prof. McGonagall the story of meeting and training Nero.
Prof McGonagall was shocked. "Mr. Potter either you are very lucky or very talented. And Hagrids advice was correct, don't disclose Nero's origin. Right now most people will assume that Nero is an Ollivander starters. Don't correct their assumption. A wild dark type in East Albion will raise more questions than answers. Now here I will write you a note. Show it in your next class and you will not be marked late."
"Professor, the pokemorph thing, does it have something to do with Pokémon energy.?"
"Where did you hear of that Mr. Potter.?"
"From Mr. Ollivander"
"Yes. Mr. Potter. You will find that there are a lot of amazing abilities that humans display in the world. Almost all of them have to do with pokémon energy. I avoided mentioning the term in class because a lot of new age trainers with their advanced technology and hyper commercialised training, dismiss the presence of such phenomenon, but you will find that a lot of professors at Hogwarts still prescribe to the old ways. Now go to your next class."
Harry left leaving the professor with her thoughts. The story was truly unbelievable. Harry Potter found a dual dark/fire type wild Houndour and trained it for over a year in complete secrecy while being 10 years old. There was a reason starter Pokémon where from recognised breeders. Starter Pokémon were generally less aggressive and violent than their wild counterparts. Training a wild dark type at 10 was unheard of even before the starting age for a journey was raised to 16.
Harry Potter was also unusually knowledgeable about Persians. In the amazement of his story she had forgotten to ask him where he acquired the knowledge. It also seemed that Garrick had taken an interest in Mr. Potter, it was a big deal to openly talk about pokemon energy these days. She sighed. She was getting too old to handle another Potter in Hogwarts.
As Harry exited the class Hilda swooped down from the rafters and landed on Harry's shoulders.
Harry rushed to his next class after numerous directions from helpful passerbys. He entered the class and handed the prof the note. Hilda flew back up to the rafters. Professor Sinistra was a young woman and she looked at Harry critically before asking him to take a seat. Harry sat next to Neville. Neville had made some notes for Harry. Thankfully they were covering the geography of Albion. Nothing he hadn't already studied in primary school.
After class Neville asked Harry why Prof. McGonagall had asked him to stay back.
Nothing man, Harry lied. She just wanted to ask about Nero, you know him being a dark type and all.
Both of them walked slowly to the Great hall for lunch, Hilda once again on Harry shoulders
Susan and Hannah were already there.
They all went to the Hufflepuff table once again.
"Has your HootHoot been with you the whole time?" Susan asked
"She had, attended classes and everything. I think she enjoys learning." Harry said and Hilda hooted in acceptance.
"Strange" Susan and Hannah said at the same time.
"How was class?" Harry asked.
"Awful, Prof. Snape isn't a very pleasant person." Susan replied "Study up before his class. He tends to ask a lot of random questions and take points if you get them wrong." Hannah added.
Both Harry and Neville nodded.
"Ours-ours wasn't too bad. Geography class was pretty straightforward, we covered westernmost part of West-west Albion and at this rate maybe we will have all of Albion covered by the end of the year." Neville said stuttering slightly.
"Behavior class was a mess. We were told to com-command our po-pokemon and cyndaquil wouldn't listen to me. Harry was great though. Not only he commanded Nero per-perfectly but also got cyndaquil and a few other Pokémon to listed to him." Neville added again.
"It wasn't that bad Neville, you just need some confidence and time with cyndaquil. You will be fine." Harry assured Neville.
Both Susan and Hannah nodded at that assuring Neville too.
Harry realized that Neville stuttered a lot more when he was nervous.
As lunch proceeded, Harry was interrupted by none other than Ron Weasley.
"Come Harry, let's go to the gryffindor table eat lunch. You don't need to pretend to enjoy it here when the gryffindors are right there."
"I am not pretending anything Weasley, now just get lost and let me eat with my friend in peace." Harry replied glaring at Weasley.
Ron left with a huff.
"I don't know what his problems is. He almost seems obsessed with me and it hasn't even been a day" Harry asked the trio
"He probably is." Susan replied. "You don't realize this, but you are way more famous than you think you are. You are an actual celebrity, on par with Lance and Steven Stone and Wallace."
"That can't possibly be true." Harry said. Being compared some of the greatest trainers in the world was ridiculous.
"She is not exaggerating Harry. There are kids who grew up on your adventures as bedtime stories. I myself may have heard a few." Hannah said.
"That's great. So what? Ron Weasley wants to be my friend. Why is he being such a jerk about it?" Harry asked.
"Probably the only way he knows how." Neville said thoughtfully.
"How did you do it?". Harry headed a shrill loud voice ask. He felt a headache coming. This was the second time his lunch was interrupted. And this time it was Hermione Granger.
"How did I do what Miss Granger?" Harry asked slowly.
"How did you get your Pokémon to obey you? Not only yours but others as well. That should be impossible. I have read all the books about training and I couldn't do it no matter what I tried." Hermione asked almost panicking.
"Look Granger. You have to first calm down. Pokémon training is as much about reading as it is about actually training. Spend some time with your Azurill, it will come to you. Pokémon training is a slow and deliberate process."
"But you could do it, and you have had your Pokémon for the same time."
Harry wanted to say no that and be done with it. But he had been adviced by multiple people to not disclose Neros origins so he said. "Different pokémon grow at different rates."
Hermione huffed and walked away seemingly not satisfied with his answers and muttering about reading some more about it.
"Okay, O wise ones! what is her problem with me," Harry asked his friends.
Susan laughed and replied, "Isn't it obvious Harry, she is jealous."
Hannah added, "Yeah. It seems like she is used to being the smartest person in the room and doesn't know how to handle it when she is not."
"You guys are really great at this "people" thing." Harry said and he was not wrong. His upbringing at the Dursleys hadn't exactly made him into a people person.
"and you are great at the pokémon thing." Neville said
"Don't worry Harry, we will handle the people for you, you help us with out pokémon." Susan said.
"Deal", Harry said and the foursome started laughing. It was great to have friends.
"So, Harry, when do you want to meet up for training?" Susan asked
Harry thought about it, "How about this Sunday. That will give us time to know the lay of the land and get used to classes."
"All right Sunday it is." The four agreed to it.
After lunch Harry and Neville had History followed by Battling.
History was boring. The professor spoke in a dreadful monotonous voice and there a creepy banette sitting silently in one corner of the class and no one seemed to care. Ghost pokémon were super creepy in Harrys opinion. The professor was also a dreadful bore and Harry had difficult following what he was talking about as he would constantly switch topics from the Great War, to the Johto - Kanto unification war, always coming back to the Hook Rebellion. Harry tried to read the book to see what the professor was blathering about but even with the textbook it was difficult to follow. So, Harry gave up and just read the first chapter of the textbook instead.
Now, battling class was something Harry was looking forward to but that was highly disappointing. The Professor, Quirrell stuttered like crazy and was very difficult to understand. The classroom also stank of garlic. There was no actual battling and the professor just read out loud the first chapter of the Octavius Potter book. This whole thing was giving Harry a serious headache. Harry wasn't sure if it was the professor, or the smell of garlic or from the stuttering. Even Nero was particularly agitated. So much so That Harry had to return him mid-class and that had only increased the headaches If Harry had seen up on the rafters, he would have seen Hilda giving Prof. Quirrell a very intense glare.
Harry exited the class with a relief. Hilda landed on his shoulders. As Harry was leaving, he saw Hilda giving a very intense glare in Prof. Quirrell's direction. Harry chuckled at that. Hilda was a strange own but he loved her nonetheless.
Harry and Neville explored the castle a while, after Harrys headache reduced. Soon it was time for dinner. Harry and Neville sat at the Gryffindor table this time. They chatted with their housemates and ate dinner and finally Harry went to bed.
Next day was Tuesday. As promised Harry woke up Neville. Harry checked his class schedule; his first class was pokémon biology with Prof. Flitwick. Much like yesterday Harry and Neville ate breakfast in the Great Hall with Hannah and Susan and then after much searching reached the Biology Classroom. Hilda followed Harry to classes.
The biology Prof. was a short bubbly man by the name of Prof. Flitwick. On first look Prof. Flitwick reminded Harry of one the Hooks of Gringotts. He was pretty excitable for a Prof. and had a wartortle out with him as he took roll call. Prof. Flitwick began the class by talking about the 18 types of pokémon. He spoke of how the first-year syllabus would cover the basics of every type, along with some other basic characteristics.
Towards the end of class Prof. Flitwick, pressed a button on his desk and a large thick cardboard rose from the floor. On its were targeting circles.
"In this class we will also cover Pokemon moves. We won't go into too much detail as there is an elective class called move mechanics which is offered to their years and above. But we will cover the basics. Now who would like to volunteer?"
A few Ravenclaws volunteered. A girl with a Horsea performed a smokescreen on the target. A girl with a Staryu displayed a weak water gun. A girl with a seel used tackle. And a pidgey used peck. Seeing as the professor was giving 5 points for every succefull demonstration, a few Gryffindor also volunteered. Kellah's Machoke used a low kick that slightly dented the target. And Seamu's voltorb used a Spark attack on the target but the target was sturdy enough that nothing happened to it.
Harry meanwhile, was wondering if he should volunteer. He knew that Neros attack were a lot more powerful than the ones presented in class and he did not want to bring anymore attention to himself. However, he also wanted to show off a little bit!
The option was taken from him when Prof. Flitwick called out his name. "How about a fire type attack Mr. Potter?"
Nero began jumping in excitement.
Harry declined. "No, thank you Professor."
"Come on Mr. Potter, there is no need to be shy and if you are worried about the fire, don't be, my wartortle, will douse any flames."
That is exactly was Harry was worried about. Nero had very little impulse control in battle. Harry had managed to control a lot of Neros aggression, but it was in battle, when his fire/dark nature really came out.
Harry sighed, there seemed to be no way of getting out of this.
Harry whispered to Nero, "Take it easy, don't go all out."
But Nero was too excited to listen to Harry, it had been a few days, since Nero had gone all out in training and he was raring to go.
"Nero, use ember on the target." Harry spoke.
Nero took in a deep breath and let loose.
Instead of the small flames of ember, what came out was a somewhere between large balls of fire and a flamethrower. Safe to say the target was obliterated. The wartortle reacted with unexpected agility and spewed a large water gun that doused the flames before the class could burn down. Harry face palmed while Nero looked proud. Prof. Flitwick was so surprised that he squeaked and fell down the platform he was standing on. Prof. Flitwick awkwardly stood up and clearing his throat said. "Yes. Yes. 5 points to Gryffindor."
The bell rang and the class got up to leave. "Mr. Potter please stay back."
Not again, Harry though.
"Save a seat for me Neville," Harry whispered, while Neville consolingly patted Harry on the back. While the other students were leaving Harry could see they were giving him strange and looks and mumbling about him amongst themselves.
"Mr. Potter, that was not a starter move. In fact if I am not mistaken that was the beginning of Flamethrower, a very powerful fire type move, and also something the houndour line learns way into its maturity. Care to explain."
At this rate Harry wondered if his secret would last the week in Hogwarts. Two days, two classes in and his secret was already out.
Harry explained Neros origin story and also of Mr Blackwood and his growlithe.
Prof. Flitwick was most surprised by the number of moves of Nero could use.
"Don't worry Mr. Potter, Like Minerva, I will keep your secret. As a Hook, I give you my word of honor." Prof. Flitwick said seriously.
Harry nodded, so he was a Hook
"Now Mr. Potter what I find most amazing is the fact that Nero can use so many moves. Do you mind if I bring another colleague into this? She will also be amazed at Nero and I can promise you that she will keep your secret." Harry nodded. He liked Prof. Flitwick so far and if the Prof. was sure then who was he to object.
"Can I get a note to the next class." Harry asked
"Sure, sure. I will give you one. Also please come meet me in my classroom, Saturday at 10:00 am." Harry nodded and left.
The next class was History and Harry didn't need the note. Prof. Binns was too absent minded to notice and Harry quickly slipped into the class and sat next to Neville.
"What happened," Neville asked in a whisper.
"You know, same old, same old." Harry replied and they were sushed by Hermione Granger for talking in class. Harry just rolled his eyes. That girl really needed to chill out.
After lunch Harry had Pokémon Flora with the Hufflepuffs. Prof. Sprout talked about the common berries found on Albion and the soil conditions in Albion. They discussed some of the common flowers, herbs and mushrooms found in Albion used in various healing potions such as the blue mountain flower, blisterwort and imp stools. They finished the class by replanting some oran berry saplings. Turns out Neville was some sort of a botany genius and knew most of the answers to Prof. Sprout's questions even before the questions were finished. Harry had to force him to raise his hands as Neville was too shy to answer. Neville ended the class with 30 points for Gryffindor and a proud smile on his face. And for once Harry was happy that for once he was not the one subjected to Hermione Grangers glares.
The rest of the week passed by in a similar manner. A noteworthy incident happening in the riding class. The riding class was held in the afternoons on Wednesdays and Thrusdays. The Prof. was Rolanda Hooch. She was a tall woman with a scarred face, spiky hair and yellow hawk like eyes. She was personally responsible for all the ride pokémon at Hogwarts.
On Wednesday, they learnt to ride ground type pokémon, the ride pokémon present at Hogwarts were Tauros, Ponyta and Rhyhorn. Harry tried all three. He liked Ponyta the best, and hated Rhyhorn. Tauros were too bumpy and liked to buck around.
It was on Thursday when the noteworthy incident happened. Harry and the others had a class on riding flying type pokémon. Harry was looking forward to this. He had absolutely loved flying on Hagrid's aerodactyl and hoped that the experience would be similar. The class was with Slytherin and Draco Malfoy did not wait a moment before he started making a fool of himself. He started by insulting Ron Weasley, then moved on to bragging about his flying prowess. Prof. Hooch released the Pidgeots and asked the students to stand beside each one. She gave some basic lessons on flying, like not pulling on the feathers too hard, not panicking, trusting the pokémon, and then asked the students to climb on the pidgeots and hold on firmly. The pidgeot would take off upon receiving a double tap by the right leg their side. Neville who was nervous from before the class and tapped the sides hurriedly possibly because of his twitching leg. His pidgeot took without any warning and then did a barrel roll in the air dropping Neville from a height of over fiftenn feet. Profs Hooch displayed her remarkable reflexes and caught Neville in midair, but the impulse of collision had Nevilles shoulder dislocated. Before Prof. Hooch carried Neville to the hospital wing she looked sternly at the students and warned them to stay firmly on the ground.
In the commotion, and the barrel roll Neville had dropped cyndaquils pokeball. Malfoy noticed it before Harry could and picked up the pokeball and climbing upon his pidgeot took off in the air. Despite warnings by Granger of being expelled, Harry could not let Malfoy damage or misplace his friends pokeball, so Harry took of after Malfoy on his own pidgeot. Harry loved the sensation of flying, Malfoy may have been more experienced, but Harry had better instincts and stuck to Malfoy in the air. Malfoy seeing no other option, hurled Nevilles pokeball up in the air. Harry chased after the ball and caught it after a sharp dive. this was noticed by Prof. McGonagall from her office window, and on seeing Harrys expertise flying had asked him to try out for the Gryffindor quidditch team. This had also led to Harry meeting Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor quidditch captain.
Another noteworthy incident happened in the Potions class. Potions was a double class on Friday. Harry had reached the class early with Neville and taken a seat in the front. The professor seemed to instantly dislike people and started the class by disparaging his status as a celebrity. After a short lecture on the importance of potions and how a potion could be the difference between life and death. The teacher proceeded to ask Harry a serious of questions.
"Potter, what would I get if I add zubat wings to a mixture of fly amanita and snorlax drool?"
Harry thought the Snorlax drool would indicate something to do with sleep, but he wasn't sure so he just shook his head indicating that he didn't know.
"Tcch… clearly fame isn't everything."
"Tell me Potter, If I crystallized a mixture of crushed Arbok fangs, muk sludge and Garbodar mud, what would I get?"
This Harry remembered reading in his potions book.
"Black Sludge, Professor."
"Apart from Blisterwort and bleeding crown, which potion ingredient is found commonly in the caves of Albion?"
Harry had no clue but Neville had come to his rescue. Scribbling hanging moss on a piece of paper on the desk while the professor was distracted by an excitable and jumping Granger.
"Hanging Moss?, Professor"
"Hmm….it seems you are not completely useless. See to it that you maintain this level of diligence in the future. I will not tolerate any laziness from you despite your celebrity status.
The rest of the class passed in relative calm. They were to brew a basic potion. It was easy and the instructions the Prof. had written on the board were concise and to the point. Harry had to prevent Neville from making a few mistakes. In the end they got a "Satisfactory, but not something he would ever subject a pokémon to." From Prof. Snape. All in all, Gryffindor had lost 40 points in the class, 20 because Seamus had meted his cauldron, 10 because Granger was "over-enthusiastic" and 10 because Ron was a moron. On the other hand Slytherin had won 30 points mostly for "not being like the dunderhead Gryffindors."
Once class was over Harry wondered what the professor's problem with his was. Maybe Prof. Snape was one of those people who hated famous people. Harry had known that Aunt Petunia would always complain about celebs on the Telly, way too interested in their lives.
Thus, passed Harrys first week at Hogwarts. He loved Pokemon Behavior and Biology, though history was pointless and both times his head hurt in Prof. Quirrell's class. Hilda had followed Harry to all his classes. Harry wouldn't be surprised if Hilda had learnt more that him.
I hope everyone liked my description of classes and Hogwarts. I went to a barding school myself, so I have taken some inspiration from my own experiences.
I also addressed the "Harry's glasses issues" in the chapter. I honestly forgot about the glasses so I had to make up something to fill that gaping plot hole.
At some point I will have to explore Nero's origin story.
Would you people like a chapter from Nero's and Hilda's POV?
Also next chapter will be an interlude of sorts. POVS of various characters will be explored.
