Author's Note: These next two chapters are pretty short, but the second one is a Keefe POV. I think I'm going to do a few chapters here and there from his point of view, because his side of the story is important.
And, Marigold Elizabeth Everdeen: I called it The Thing About Death for a reason. . . *insert evil villain laugh*
You'll find out why closer to the end of the fanfic. Yes, I have the general storyline already planned out. It's kinda sad, but mostly a happy story. There will be death in it later on.
Does Keefe die? Does Sophie die? Does Fitz die?
Who knows. . .
Have fun reading!
Sophie gasped, her heart pounding.
Surely, Fitz was bluffing. He wouldn't kill his best friend over a girl. . .
Would he?
Sophie remembered all those times Fitz had gotten angry at Keefe, had lashed out over some small, stupid reason. She remembered when Alvar had returned, on the night that they found the troll hive, how Fitz had been ready to kill him.
His own brother.
Suddenly, Sophie wasn't too sure. Fitz was explosive and temperamental. But murder would be too much, even for him.
Right?
She couldn't risk it.
"You wouldn't do that," she whispered back to Fitz.
He raised an eyebrow. "How much are you willing to bet? Keefe's life? Because if you don't want him dead, then I'd suggest you listen to me."
Sophie gritted her teeth. There was nothing she could do.
"Fine," she whispered. "I'll do what you say. For now. But if you lay a finger on him, I swear I will kill you."
Fitz smirked. "I knew you'd see it my way."
Before Sophie could reply, the door opened, and Keefe ran in.
"Foster," he said, panting. "Are you okay? I can feel your emotions from the other side of the property. Is everything fine?"
Watch it, Fitz transmitted to Sophie.
I know, she transmitted back.
Sophie sighed. There was nothing she could do. She was powerless. In minutes, her entire resolve had crumbled. She wanted to scream and cry and smack Fitz a couple times for good measure, but she couldn't. Because if she did, the boy in front of her would be dead.
"Yes, of course," she said to Keefe. "We're fine."
