Beverly found out at her physical that she was expecting. Lili was over a year old now. Alfred was absolutely thrilled and she was too. "Alfred, would you be alright if this were the last baby?"
"Yeah, I would be. I don't think we'll have enough time for more than three anyway."
"I mean maybe when they're a little older, but I really feel that this baby will complete our family."
"Whatever you want," the man smiled and hugged his wife.
This pregnancy was more like Beverly's first which made her think the baby was a boy. It wasn't easy chasing two toddlers around, but she had a lot of help from her in-laws. Beverly was due the month after Lili turned two. It was nice to be pregnant and not have to worry about school work, but now she had just opened her own practice.
"Beverly, we'll help you both out if you need it," Marcy told her daughter-in-law.
"I know, but I feel like you have already helped so much."
"We want to help," Ed told her.
"Well, I'm just worried about when I go on maternity leave. I hope I don't lose clients during that time."
"You probably won't, but like Ed and I have said, we will help in any way you need."
Beverly smiled, "that means a lot to me."
Beverly decided to try and work until two weeks before her due date. She had found someone who could sit in for her while she was on leave and her clients were okay with that. She would be gone for two to three months.
The weather was terrible the night Beverly went into labor.
"I don't know what to do," Alfred said to his parents, "the weather is so bad and I don't want to risk her or the baby getting hurt."
"Look, she's still waiting for her water to break. We just have to hope that the storm will pass before then," Marcy said.
Alfred helped Beverly while Marcy and Ed occupied Michael and Lili. Instead of the storm dying down, it got worse. Beverly's contractions were closer and she was beginning to panic. The power had gone out and the phone lines were down. There was no way to call for an ambulance. Ed got some flashlights for everyone which came in handy when the tornado siren went off. Ed grabbed Michael and Marcy grabbed Lili before heading to the basement. As Alfred and Beverly were walking towards the basement, her water broke. They were both panicked but held it together long enough to get downstairs.
"Alfred, this baby is coming now," Beverly screamed in pain.
"I'll get some towels," Marcy said.
Ed placed a clean blanket on the floor, "Alfred and I are going to help you sit." Once Beverly was situated, Ed went back to his grandchildren.
Marcy was the one delivering the baby because they didn't think Beverly would be comfortable with Ed doing that, but he was on stand by. "Alright sweetheart, it's time to push." Beverly pushed with all her might. "Alright I can see the head," Marcy said as Beverly took a break.
Beverly was panting, but she was far from done, "honey, I'm so proud of you," Alfred whispered into her ear in the hopes of encouraging her. When Ed looked at his watch, it was four in the morning and that's when he heard the cry of a baby.
"It's a boy!" Marcy smiled and cleaned off the baby before laying him on his mother's chest.
Alfred kissed the top of his wife's head, "I'm so damn proud of you," he whispered.
Just then the power came on. Ed went to make sure it was safe before bringing the kids up and calling for the paramedics. "Alfred," Beverly said tiredly, "take the baby."
Alfred saw his wife was now a ghostly white. He took the baby and then his wife went limp, "Ed!" Marcy screamed up the stairs. When he arrived at the door she told him to leave the kids up there. "She's hemorrhaging," Marcy whispered and Ed told this to the paramedics.
"You got this?"
"Yeah," Marcy ran back to her daughter-in-law to try and at least contain the bleeding. By the time the paramedics had arrived, Beverly had lost a lot of blood. Marcy was covered in a great deal of it too.
At the hospital, they were able to stop the bleeding and replenish Beverly's blood. Alfred was holding their son while sitting by her bedside. He saw her eyes begin to flutter open. "Thank God!" Alfred said with tears in his eyes.
"Baby," Beverly mumbled.
"He's right here. Just wait until you're strong enough to hold him."
"He needs a name."
"Leonard Leakey Hofstadter," Alfred told her.
"Leonard?"
"After you, Beverly Leonore," he smiled.
"That's very sweet, thank you."
"You had a baby during a tornado, in the middle of the night, with no drugs, and nearly bled to death. Naming him after you is literally the least I can do."
Beverly laughed and winced when it hurt, "Leakey?"
"Yeah, so?"
"Fine, but you're paying for his therapy."
