"They don't show you that kind of thing just anywhere. Only at Jurassic World," Chris said.
"Now what?" Sammy asked.
"We get our stuff, take whatever food we can carry, and head for the power generators," Darius said.
Ryan fidgeted with his watch. "If we're able to get the backup generators up and running, we may have power for another few days at most. I can take us there."
"Okay. We get what we can, and then we meet back here in 5 minutes," Darius said.
The girls left for the kitchen to gather food, while the boys went back to the rooms for their gear. Everyone met up once again and left the hotel together, stepping over the allosaurus carcass.
The group reached the perimeter of the park when Ryan checked his watch.
"It should be around here somewhere."
Ryan then saw a manhole cover. He and Chris were able to lift the lid off.
"In we go," Chris said.
"This will lead to the maintenance tunnels beneath the park," Ryan clarified. "We'll be able to avoid the larger predators down here."
Without saying a word, the campers looked at one another before climbing down one by one. With huge effort, Ben, Ryan and Chris carefully carried Bumpy down.
Out of breath, Chris said, "Pretty soon, she won't be able to fit anymore."
Because of the power outage, the tunnels were dark and pitch-black. Ryan and Chris turned on flashlights mounted on their helmets. Ben unzipped his fanny pack and took out a small glowstick.
Advancing in the dark, the group was on edge, remembering the time they were chased by Toro. Ben, who was usually the most timid and frightened of the group, was actually at the front alongside Ryan and Chris, with Bumpy at his side.
Looking up, Ryan saw a sign with red letters that spelled, "OLD PARK," along with an arrow pointing ahead. They were on the right track.
Then, a loud screech echoed. Most of the gang yelped and froze.
"Wait. You hear that?" Ryan asked, his shotgun at the ready.
Sure enough, footsteps. However, behind every third or fourth footstep, a clicking noise. As if the tip of a knife was tapping against metal.
"I don't think it's close," Brooklynn assured.
"I don't know, those are loud," Kenji objected.
Ryan turned his head back. "Eyes peeled, ears up." The campers nodded.
Eventually, they reached a gate that blocked the hallway they were walking down. There was no way around, and there was no way to raise it with the power outage.
"Luckily, we have something that can help," Ryan said while unzipping his pack.
He pulled two blowtorches out. Tossing one to Chris, they got to work on cutting the gate open. ACU members were trained with blowtorches in case a paddock or enclosure's gate malfunctioned, and they needed to get in or out.
After a minute, Ryan and Chris cut a hole just enough to squeeze through for everyone, even Bumpy.
Also, the noise seems to have disappeared.
"Okay, we're here," Chris said, arriving at another ladder and hatch. Everyone climbed out. When the emerged, they were right outside of a large building blanketed in vegetation.
"What's this place?" Yaz asked as they ascended the stairs.
"Oh, I know," Kenji said. He opened the front door.
Inside were the scattered bones of two dinosaurs. On the floor was a dirty and torn black and red banner that said, "When dinosaurs ruled the Earth."
"Whoa. What is this?" Sammy asked, picking up a big tooth.
"This is, well, was, supposed to be Jurassic Park," Ryan began. "John Hammond envisioned a special park that utilized state-of-the-art technology to revive the past and the wonderful creatures it held. And the whole time, he would always say, 'Spare no expense.'"
"This is the place where you said your parents worked, right?" Ben asked, scratching Bumpy's chin.
Chris nodded.
Everyone decided to take a rest inside the visitor center ruins. While sitting on the ground, Ryan grabbed at a necklace tucked under his gear and undershirt. Gently, he took it off.
"What is that?" Brooklynn asked, cuddling with Darius.
"It's a velociraptor claw," Ryan said, raising the sharp digit.
Yasmina turned her head. "The big one that on their toes? Ow." Sammy was tending to her ankle.
Ryan nodded.
"How'd you get it?" Doesn't exactly look like something you'd find in the gift shop." Kenji took a sip from his water bottle.
"One night, Shannon and I snuck into the ACU vehicle lot and 'borrowed' a truck. We just wanted to be alone together, so we went on a joyride. Anyway, after driving for a bit, we parked the truck and saw a big tree and decided to climb it, but not before seeing something that caught my eye near the base of the trunk. It was dirty, but there it was: a raptor claw. And it's been with me ever since."
"Is it like your good luck charm?" Sammy asked.
"Yeah. It's saved me a cou-"
Something could be heard from outside. It seemed distant, but as time went on, it got closer, and closer. Then, the crew realized something.
It was the same screech. The same footsteps. The same clanking.
Ryan gestured everyone to stand up, which they did. Aware, Ryan and Chris aimed their shotguns at where the sounds were now coming from: the kitchen.
A large animal pounced from the kitchen doors. Its leap was so strong that it kicked a chunk of mud at Ryan's face. Instinctively, he raised his hand to deflect it.
"Not good," Darius said. The campers appeared frightened; even Chris looked extremely nervous.
After recovering, Ryan realized he was face-to-face with a blue-striped velociraptor.
