Hagrid broke out a huge smile as he wrapped his arms around the woman and lifted her up in his hug. "Teenie! You look fantastic. Life's treating you well then?" He let her down and she chuckled a little as she straightened out her dress.
"It has. Come on, follow me to the back. Newt is busy with some swooping evils who refuse to eat their brain substitute...Also only Queenie calls me that. It's Tina, Hagrid." She gave him a gentle nudge. She reminded him to call her that every time, but he found that the nickname fit her better. With a nod, he followed her into the back and as soon as they opened the doors, one of the swooping evils flew right towards him.
It was beautiful! Its underside was a fluorescent blue with a pattern that resembled a butterfly. The wings were rugged on the edges and you could see the grass green colour on the other side as it swooped in to strike him. Hagrid put his arms out and grabbed it.
"What a fine little creature! And a beauty at that. Where do you find them all Newt?" He kept inspecting the creature who no doubt kept trying to attack him. This wasn't a fully grown one but its wingspan was around two feet and it could do some serious damage with its talons and sharp teeth. What made most people scared of the creature was the face. Its face reminded of a skull from a wolf and that combined with the fact that they naturally ate human brains, was off putting enough for the vast majority of the world.
"That one was born on this farm while I was taking care of his mother. It's a shame most are afraid of him or I'd love to set him free around these parts again, but it seems like he'll have to live on the farm until I can find somewhere safe." Newt sounded a bit sad as he managed to feed the other ones. The one in Hagrid's hands had now stopped resisting and was just looking Hagrid right in the eyes, slowly tilting his head to one side.
"I think he likes you Rubeus!" Newt laughed as he walked over with a handful of food for it. Hagrid just smiled at the little creature. He slowly let go of him and gestured towards Newt's hand. After some consideration, the creature started eating from it. Soon they all curled up into small cocoons, except for the one Hagrid had held. It kept flying around them.
He just smiled in awe at the little thing until he was interrupted by Newt "So what brings you here today Hagrid? Not that I mind the company, of course, but I've understood now is a busy time for many." This brought Hagrid's focus back to Newt and he hugged the man quickly. "Indeed it is. And I do have a reason for coming here but it comes with a story."
Newt smiled "Of course, come inside for some tea then. I've got some time now that you helped me with the straggler." So they went inside and while the tea was brewing Hagrid explained it all to Newt. He explained what had happened and that he now felt it was time to leave. "Now I want you to promise to keep this last bit a secret.."
Newt had no problem with that as he poured the tea and Teenie joined the conversation. She promised as well and Hagrid explained the deal with Bellatrix. "So my thoughts go to your suitcase. I understand if you don't want to part with it, but I think I could do much good with it on my travels. And it would of course give me a place to hide Bella until she fully returns mentally."
The couple looked at each other but there was no hesitation there. They just shared a smile and Newt went to get a suitcase. He didn't come back with the one he used to use however. This was a newer model. "Here you go Hagrid. I actually prepared this one years ago for you. It's got plenty of space and loads of different habitats. Sadly you can't change them around unless you get your hands on a wand, but the instructions are in a book I've left in there. If your Bella comes around she'll be able to do it."
Hagrid looked at the suitcase being held in front of him and tears began running from his eyes. "But..But why? Why would you prepare one for me years ago?" Newt grinned "I thought you'd make a trip abroad at some point and didn't think you'd go to visit bowtruckles." He laughed at the thought of Hagrid visiting seemingly harmless creatures. "There's a dragon-specific habitat in there actually."
Hagrid chuckled and accepted the suitcase. "I'll always treasure it, Newt. I knew I could count on you." Newt then went on to explain everything about what's in there and he had left recipes for all kinds of food for all kinds of creatures. Then he went to get one last thing, it was a large brown egg with green spots. "Is..is that what I think it is?" Hagrid said.
Newt nodded solemnly. "It is. A baby dragon. A common welsh green which was left by its mother to die, as she felt it was too small." That hit home with the half-giant just as Newt knew it would. Hagrid knew that the same thing happened to him when he was little. His mother had left his father simply because Hagrid turned out to be a small baby, in comparison to giants, and that was a threat to her pride so she left him.
When Hagrid took the egg in his hands he could only think about what a terrible thing it was for a mother to act that way. Dragons are also prideful creatures of course and it seems this little guy had to pay for it. Hagrid would make sure that this dragon grew up to be powerful and mighty one day. Newt grabbed the suitcase and opened it, he then gestured for Hagrid to follow him down with the egg.
It was spectacular. The place you get to first, looks like an earthy cottage. A giant one though with one wall missing. Through that open wall you could see the different habitats and it ranged for as far as the eye could see. Hagrid was stumped by what he was seeing and realized that this was his until Newt nudged him and showed him the little hatchery he had prepared. "This here is the hatchery. You'll have to go here and restock it with magic every now and then and if you're close by at most hours it'll be even better. The egg needs warmth and magic. But also a sense of connection to someone.
Hagrid nodded and looked down at the egg as he placed it in the holder and put his hand against a plate filled with runes. He felt some magic pour out of him and then the hatchery started heating up. He took a step back and looked at Newt "So you're really giving me this? I'm not complaining, it's a dream come true, but I just can't believe it.." Newt nodded and patted him on his back.
"You remind me a bit of myself once Hagrid. In fact.." Newt showed him over to one of the workbenches. It had a massive bunch of parchment and three quills. Two of which Hagrid noticed were spelled ones. "Perhaps you could write something on your travels. I'm sure you'll get up to all sorts of things and if nothing else, I'd like to read them when you come back." Hagrid wrapped his arms around Newt and picked him up using the hug. "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I'll make you proud Newt. I'll write some great tales to bring back home!"
They both chuckled at that while they walked up the steps, only to be met with the swooping evil from before. "What do you want little guy?" Newt sighed and told Hagrid "Put out your hand Rubeus." He did so, and the swooping evil quickly folded in on itself into a small spiky green cocoon. Hagrid looked questioningly at Newt. "Well looks like he wants to come with you. Take good care of him Hagrid, you might want to find a name for him once you get started on your travels." He put the cocoon in one of his coat pockets with a cheerful smile.
After that they soon ended the tea time. Newt bonded the suitcase to Hagrid and then said farewell. It was beginning to get dark now but Hagrid had done all he could today. All that was left was to wait for approval to leave the country. He took the floo back to Black house and instantly heard an owl peck on the window. "Finally!" Sirius burst out.
Hagrid looked at him. "The owl has been here since you left this morning with a letter for you. Wouldn't let me take it and it's just been sitting there waiting for you." Hagrid put the suitcase down on the table and walked over to get his letter. The owl was excited to finally be done with this job. Hagrid took out a treat from his coat and gave it to the bird who flew away when he took the letter.
It was from the ministry. Inside was a muggle and magic passport and every piece of paper he could possibly need to travel anywhere. He was excited to tell Arch and so he called him over. "I've got everything. Albus said yes. The ministry said yes and I've got a way to transport Bella. Everything is prepared for me to get out of here!"
Sirius looked confused. "Where are you going to keep Bella?" Hagrid opened the suitcase. "Just in there!" Sirius interrupted him "Hagrid you can't just put living things in an expanded suitcase. It's not that simple and you know it." Hagrid sighed. "The suitcase is from Newt Scamander. It's specially made. You won't believe how amazing it can be in there." And so Sirius, hesitantly, put his hand in there. And then he put his head in there. A second later he came up again with a surprised face. "It checks out...so when are you leaving?"
Hagrid smiled at both him and Archie. "Tomorrow evening."
