Chapter 18

It was 7 AM as I sit in my car at the venue where we would be having a community engagement with the Commissioner. The whole management of the Station would be here, and so would the community we serve and protect. I sigh as I pull out my packet of cigarettes and I place one in my mouth lighting it. This thing was supposed to start at 9 AM, but we were asked to be here earlier to prepare the venue and set up the parking for the Commissioner and his cluster of people who work with him.
I see out of the corner of my eye that Jellal had arrived. And soon Laxus drove in with the Police vehicle. Most likely to promote police visibility with This community engagement. And that's when I see Gray driving in, next to him is Lucy. They drive a bit further before getting a parking and then she gets out holding a coffee for him as he gets out of the car. You see if you didn't know Gray was married to a bat shit crazy woman called Juvia then you would think he is with Lucy. But we knew better. I see her making her way towards Laxus and Jellal, her bag over her arm and a file in her arms.
I push myself off the vehicle and start to move towards them as well. I puff at my cigarette and nod my head in greeting as I reach the men before Lucy. As she arrives she reaches with one hand towards Laxus and they have a awkward half hug, she greeted Jellal the same way and then she moves to me. Something was off about her, I could see it in her eyes. But she gives a smile nether the less.
"Hey guys!" She greets with a bit more enthusiasm as expected.
"Hey Lucy." Jellal is the first to greet, as my mouth is still a bit preoccupied with my smoke.
"How was the States?" Laxus asks and at this she looks to the ground and then she looks up smiling brightly. Somehow I could see that something was really off with the blonde.
"It was good, Vega's was fun, though I didn't get a chance to go into any of the Casinos. Nor did I get hitched." At this Laxus gives a nervous laugh and I almost choke. "Got married once, never again." At this she gives a humourless laugh.
"So no wedding bells for you?" Gray asks as he approach our group.
"Noooo, I doubt it." Lucy says swaying from side to side, her hair swinging on her back.
"But Chaise treated you good?" Gray says and for some reason I feel awkward as I look to Laxus who casually looks at Lucy. Lucy smiles but it doesn't touch her eyes.
"He treats me like a queen." Lucy says and she gives me a smile and then glances towards Laxus. For some reason something just feels off completely. And I can't put my finger on it. Something was definitely off about Lucy, Laxus also seemed to be in a mood ever since the States were brought up. And me, I felt weird for some reason. I don't know if I am feeling sorry or maybe its pity but I was worried about Lucy.
"So we really have to be here today?" Laxus states and instantly the mood around us changes.
"I know right? And I have to type the fucking minutes for this thing." Lucy exclaims her eyes wide as she steps from one side to another.
"It's going to be fine." Gray says and we all look at him like he grew a third head. I watch as Lucy stands to the side and then she fidgets with her bag before I finally see that she needs both her hands free. I extend my hands to her and she instantly hands me the file.
I smirk as I take the file and flip it open. I frown as I look at the drawings I see. And I mean they were really good drawings and sketches, Lucy manages to pull out her phone and then she looks up to me seeing that I am flipping through her file, her face goes pale.
"Don't!" she yells as she starts to grab at the file. But Gray stops her and both Laxus and Jellal step closer to me as we look at the drawings.
"Relax Lucy." Gray says as we continue to look at what now seem to be her drawings. "You're a good artist. You should show people." Gray continues and she shakes her head from side to side, as we continue to look through the file. She was very talented.
"They really are good." I finally say as we almost reach the end. That's when I hear my name being called and I look to the side. Our Commanding Officer motioning towards us to move to her. I smile and shake my head at Lucy as I hand her back the file and turn to walk towards Mavis. Why would she hide a talent like that? She could be a great sketch artist is she wanted to be.
Once I reach Mavis she starts giving instructions on what to do and what to expect when the top management arrives. She indicated that we need to remain outside and ensure that the people are parked correctly and then showed to the hall where the engagement would be done. I want to sigh but it's not even worth it.
I move towards the area she asked me to be in and from the corner of my eye, I see Laxus was the only one who remained by Lucy's side as they stand in the morning sun. I can see their lips moving but have no idea what they are talking about. I feel a pinch of jealousy as I continue to observe them. How she hands him her file and then disappears into the venue. Why would I even feel jealous of them just talking? It was irrational.
Moments later I see her emerge from the entrance, two cups in her hands and I roll my eyes, she probably went in to make them coffee. I look down to the ground and then back to the gate, waiting patiently for the people to come. But I was surprised when I am met with the sound of footsteps and not the sound of a vehicle.
"Natsu!" Lucy exclaims as I turn my head to look to her, she is beaming at me as she reaches me she extends her hand towards me, a cup of coffee being offered to me. "I got you some coffee." She states as she takes a step closer and then she is beside me.
"Oh…thank you." I say as I take the coffee from her.
"If it's bad, I am sorry but you still got to drink it." She says and a small giggle leaves her lips as she looks to me.
"I doubt it could be bad." I say as I bring it to my lips, taking a small sip. It was good. "You glad to be back?" I ask as I look to the gate again.
"Back home or back to work?" she asks and I can hear the sarcasm in her voice.
"Both?" I ask and at this she stands a bit closer, our sides touching.
"Both." She replies as she sips on her coffee. "Vega's was… just shit." She says as a matter of fact and I look down to her. Her voice dropped down so low. "Chaise's parent like me, even though they do think I am too old." She mutters and then she looks to me, her eyes bright. "But things are just… bleh." She says and then she sighs.
"Something things have to be bleh." I say and at this she raises an eye brow at me.
"You don't understand." She says and then she starts to walk again. Only stopping a few feet further. "I'll keep you a seat in there." She states and with that she left.
Lucy Heartfelia was just not you average girl. And I think a lot of people couldn't see that.
Once we started the engagement with the community, true to her word she kept a seat for me, though she was stuck between me and Jellal she didn't mind. She would note every other thing that was said but most of the time she would pull out chips or sweets from her bag, offering it to the four of us. Even had a cool drink in that small hand bag. She was something else.
