Chapter 10: The awakened
"May I beat the heck out of you, coward." Roswaal said.
Pain of being kicked lingered on Subaru(Pride)'s face. As Pride stood up, the atmosphere began to vibrate, meaning Pride has gone into his fighting poses.
Beat the heck out of me? Time has made you foolish, Roswaal. Maybe it is time for me to teach you a lesson.
Shadow hands instantly formed behind Pride.
"Hey, fighting him was not our plan. By the way, he is Ros-chi, you know? The greatest magician people have ever seen."
…. And I am Typhus. The strongest guardian spirit this world has ever known.
Subaru's eyes started to flood with lights of dark blue, and the surrounding land began to shake.
This is a nice timing for you to kneel, Roswaal. I….no, we do not want you to get killed.
Roswaal, on the other hand, was acting cool which was a surprise to Subaru and Pride.
"Looks like this is our first trial, he?"
Then, Roswaal lifted his uninjured arm and chanted.-"Al-gora"
A ball of fire conjured immediately and launched itself forward. It was, however, not toward Pride, but toward Emilia.
Pride jumped out to reach Emilia, but an ice that formed beneath his feet interrupted him.
SHADOWWWWS! Pride ordered.
Soon, a thick wall of shadows sprang from the ground and blocked the spell narrowly with a loud explosion. Felix, who came outside to see what was going on hurried over to Emilia
"What a shame." Roswaal spat as he conjured different colors of magic orbs.
"My next move won't be easy-"
But before Roswaal could end his words, Pride was in front of him with blazing blue eyes.
Coward. Pride growled and threw Roswaal on the ground. A booming sound echoed through the village and ground where Roswaal was thrown formed numerous cracks.
Roswaal didn't stand up. He just murmured something about the Gospels and a witch named Echidna. His makeup was in bloody mess and his eyes were black with despair.
You are still a child, Roswaal. You're like a crying baby whose candy is taken away.
"You will never understand this feeling, Typhus. You live for an eternity with no worries. Humans, and even I am mortal. No matter how much I extend my life span using magics…"
Humans are ignorant. So maybe, one day, you will recognize that you are just being foolish. However, I can't forgive you. You shouldn't have touched Emilia.
Pride lifted his hand to slice Roswaal in half when Subaru stopped him.
'We shouldn't kill him, Pride."
This bastard tried to kill Emilia!
'Hey, look at him. He is not in his shape. Maybe you and Roswaal's proper reunion should be delayed a little longer. Plus, we've got another problem coming.'
If it was not for Avalanche..
Pride grumbled and vanished inside Subaru.
'Well, I'll think that as an approval.'
Subaru looked down at bloody magician knocked out cold in front of him. Thinking his injuries should be treated as soon as possible, he reached out to lift Roswaal.
When Subaru lifted(almost dragged) Roswaal toward the inn, Beatrice was still sobbing and Puck was busy soothing her. Emilia was frowning as if she was trying to catch up what just happened. Ram was looking seriously puzzled looking at both Subaru and Roswaal's status quo. And Rem was running toward him to see if everything was okay. Subaru, too, was deep in thought how to deal with every mischief that had, and is going to occur.
Nobody noticed Roswaal muttering half unconscious.
"You are my only hope, Subaru. Only you can do it... This is the best I can do for you."
Mana started to cohere on Roswaal's palm. Bright light began to emit itself.
"AL-GORA."
Then, he lifted his bloody hand and summoned all his strength to conjure a catastrophic flame that could turn anything into ashes with a slightest touch.
As flame exploded with such speed, only Puck and Pride could respond to the surprise attack.
"What are you doing Roswaal!"
Puck created an ice barrier at covered Emilia and Beatrice but Roswaal's surprise magic took better of him.
"No, Lia! Nooooo"
Deadly flame crushed Puck's ice magic and swallowed Emilia who stood there surprised. Fire swept every corner of the inn, and almost half of the village turning everybody, including Elsa, who was locked up in the inn, into ashes.
All of this occurred in no more than a single second.
"What have you done…" Puck murmured, looking around.
His usual playful expression was gone and was replaced with endless emptiness.
He blankly looked at Subaru who was covered with slithering shadow that was blocking flames from touching him.
"I don't understand why, but things are going crazy since you appeared, Thypus."
The temperature began to go below freezing and there was sharp ice forming around Puck, representing his rage.
However, Subaru was deep in his own emotional collapse to notice this.
'Again?' He thought.
'I have to see everyone die in front of me again? What have I missed? What have I done wrong?"
With swarming questions in his head, he walked up to Puck with hallow eyes and picked up a sharp ice piece underneath him.
"There is no need to freeze this world to death this time, Puck." Subaru said smiling like a mad man.
"This time?" Puck asked, truly dumbfounded.
"Ah, well forget about that." Subaru said, chuckling.
"I'll just be back in a minute to correct everything."
Leaving a dumbfounded Puck behind, he stabbed his throat over and over until he lost his consciousness, only to be embraced by the abyss of death.
-In the abyss-
Puck's magic could have been less painful, you know.
'It is to get rid of my stress. It helps somehow.'
It hurts. You understand what it feels like to get stabbed again and again..?
'Duh, It is my body. Who cares?'
Well I do, you idiot. You and I feel the same, remember?
'Oh, I forgot about that.'
….So, feeling okay now?
'Yeah, kind of. Is there no [evolve] taking place this time?'
Who knows? [Evolve] is not my own power. It is one of Typhon's abilities. Maybe it is not happening this time.
'I need that [evolve] now. I'm too weak to save everyone. As you can see, I had to see everyone die again.'
That's not true.
Suddenly, a dark shadow slithered out of Subaru's body and shimmered in front of him. Its color was darker than black and looked like it held an endless abyss inside it.
By the way I see it, we can save whoever we want with my power.
Pride's voice echoed through the abyss with its ringing low voice. It swirled around Subaru's head as if it was urging him to answer.
Just accept my power within you more so that I can… be more like myself.
'And what consequence will that bring? A man with an uncontrollable power?'
You read to much fiction, Natsuki Subaru. Just think of it as another form of evolution. I gain power, you gain a very useful friend. Win-win for us, don't you think?
'….."
Now… do we have a deal?
'Looks like there is no choice is there?'
Do you prefer to see your…. no. OUR loved ones wither in front of our own eyes?
'…No. I'd whether be a monster.'
It's a deal, then. A deal between us.
'Yeah. Just don't make me into a real monster. I want to be Natsuki Subaru I have always been.'
No worries. Everything will be as usual. Only our power will become stronger day by day.
Pride's shadow grinned(at least it looked like it did) and vanished. Something clicked inside Subaru mentioning one of the locks holding back Thyphus has been released.
Cracks started to formed inside Subaru bit by bit….
