Chapter 10

Peter slowed as he approached the edge of the tree line. Charlotte had placed the backpack behind a tree before returning to Peter's side. Together they crossed the tree line meeting Jasper. Peter gently handed Bella over.

"Careful Major, I think her arm is broken."

Jasper growled low before turning and walking over to the fire in the center of the field. He placed her gently on the ground. Carlisle was instantly by his side squatting down and checking over Bella.

Carlisle called for Rose to find something to use as a splint while he asked Jasper to help get Bella's coat and hoodie off. Jasper leaned down carefully extracting first her coat from her body, followed by her hoodie which he was glad to see it wasn't the green FPD one and so did not have to worry about keeping it in one piece. Once she was down to her long sleeve shirt Jasper looked over at Carlisle.

Carlisle gave a nod and moved in with the sticks he had sanded down with his own hands, and the twine made from bark and stems of bushes that Rose had braided together. Jasper moved aside giving room to Carlisle. He quickly secured Bella's arm with the make shift splint, making sure the bones were lined up properly then used the braided bark to tie it into place. Stepping back looking over his work he gave a nod it would do till they could get her home and he could fix it properly.

Alice flitted over standing at Bella's feet. "She'll open her eyes in 30 seconds and the Volturi will be here in five minutes. She can probably hear us now."

Jasper moved back to her side kneeling next to her, "It's alright darlin'. Everyone's ok, there was no lives lost from our side. The Pack will be fine and we're all ok. Your family has survived darlin. It's ok, you're ok. We're all ok darlin. I'm here your safe it's ok. Everyone is fine." Jasper spoke softly while stroking her hair.

Bella's eyes fluttered, then opened, and immediately found Jasper's eyes. Staring into their swirling depths as if reading his soul with her own. Bella's voice was soft as she fired off her questions.

"Esme?"

"I'm alright sweetie no harm came to me."

"Alice?"

"Right here, and you shouldn't even have to ask. You seriously doubt my skill?"

A small smile played at Bella's lips at her reply.

"Rose?"

Her only response was a haughty huff from said vampire.

Jasper looked down at her a smirk in place. "I told ya darlin we're all ok everyone made it through jus fine."

Then her brows furrowed.

"The Pack? I heard a howl."

Jasper gently caressed her cheek,

"They're all fine, Seth was injured but is already healing and he will be back to normal by morning. Carlisle was able to help him and set his bones. He's going to be fine. Like I said darlin, everyone's ok."

Bella nodded and moved to stand up. Jasper understanding what she was trying to do helped her to stand letting her lean on him while her head cleared. Once her head had cleared of the tunnel vision and the fuzzies and she became more aware she realized her family was all loosely gathered around her.

"What happened to my coat and hoodie?" As the question passed her lips, she realized that her arm felt heavy and that's when she noted the pain.

Jasper let out a low growl, "Peter broke your arm."

Bella looked up at him a frown creasing her brow, she was about to ask when Alice interrupted.

"They'll be in range in 5...4...3...2..." And silently she held up her finger as 1.

Bella noticed the change in Jaspers stance as he felt emotions coming towards them. The family still standing loosely around Bella with her at the center, but they all stood tall, ready and waiting and slightly turned facing the tree line and watching, waiting for the new arrivals.

She only saw the purple smoke rising through the air from the multiple fires across the field burning the newborns. Her mind shut it all out not acknowledging the fact that not too long ago they were humans' people who had parents' siblings' people who loved them and now they were just ash and smoke. Something called out to her soul as she looked at the purple smoke rising through the air and she knew there was more blood on her hands then she ever wanted to know. Her soul was heavy with the loss. Her mind running in circles her emotions were catastrophic.

("Hmmm," a dead voice murmured from the mist.

"Welcome, Jane.") Carlisle always courteous.

(The dark shapes came closer, separating themselves from the haze, solidifying.)

Four gray-shrouded figures hulking behind the small figure I assumed was Jane. They continued forward, my eyes taking in everything around me, my hyper-awareness going into overdrive as soon as I could make out the figures in front of me. Though they were still a way's away I couldn't exactly see facial features. The small female at the front surrounded by others; one taller than Emmett but just as wide if not more so. The other a little leaner taller than Jasper but about the same build. The other two that flanked them were non-descript about the same size as Carlisle and Jasper, but nothing spectacular.

The small one in front seemed to be the spokesperson, as again, she spoke addressing Carlisle.

("Aro hoped that we would get far enough west to see you, Carlisle. He sends his regards."

Carlisle nodded. "I would appreciate it if you would convey mine to him."

"Of course." Jane smiled. Her face almost too lovely when it was animated. She looked back toward the smoke. "It appears you've done our work for us today... just out of professional curiosity how many were there? They left quite a wake of destruction in Seattle."

"Eighteen." Carlisle answered.

Janes eyes widened, and she looked back over the fire seeming to reassess the size of it.

"Eighteen?" She repeated, her voice sounding unsure for the first time.

"All brand new," Carlisle said dismissively. "They were unskilled."

"All?" Her voice turned sharp. "Then who was their creator?"

"Her name was Victoria." Carlisle answered.

"Was?" Jane asked

Peter spoke up at that point, as he pulled Charlotte closer to his side. "My mate and I took care of her as well as two others she had with her."

Inclining his head to the eastern forest.

Jane's head snapped in the direction.

"That was in addition to the eighteen? So, twenty-one in total?"

At that Carlisle nodded. "Yes, Jane."

Jane half-smiled. "I can't deny that I'm impressed. It appears there's nothing left for us to do. Odd... It's not often we are rendered unnecessary."

Jane hummed as if to herself. Her attention solely pointed at Bella.

"It's human." Jane stated.

"For now." Bella's voice strong as she stood tall. "It was necessary for me to remain so. I was the bait." At her final word spoken she lifted her shirt enough to show a small portion of her scars, a hint of claw marks as well as vampire bite marks.

Growls and hisses came from both sides of the field.

Jane tilted her head slightly and gave a hiss to the ones on her side. The hisses and growls stopped immediately on her side.

"She seems to bring out strong reactions in our kind." Jane stated then hummed once again.

"Do not leave this area I must consult with Aro. I will return after I have spoken with him." With that she turned as the guard turned with her, they left the area quickly.

Carlisle spoke up before they were out of hearing range.

"We'll be at our permanent home here in the Olympic Peninsula. Aro has my home number as well as my cell he can reach me anytime Jane."

The Cullen's remained standing there in the field until the Volturi was out of range for Jasper. Jasper gave a nod and at once they all relaxed.

Alice looked over at everyone, "Bella, I know you need a few minutes. The rest of us will meet you back at the house."

With that they all turned and ran, gone in a millisecond, Peter leaned down and spoke in Char's ear and she vanished in the next blink of an eye.

Jasper looked at Bella and Peter with a quizzical expression. He didn't feel as though Bella's emotions were in need of assistance, so he wasn't sure exactly why she needed to take a moment.

Bella looked up at Jasper from beneath her lashes watching as his stoic and confused face melted before her eyes. She turned and looked towards Peter. He nodded his head as he jogged towards the tree line.

He came out of the tree line carrying the back pack, once he was standing before Bella; he placed it on the ground and opened it up grabbing Victoria by her hair holding the head up. Her eyes were open and mouth wide in a silent scream. Peter knew Bella wanted to hold the head herself but he gave her a quick shake of his head and continued to hold it for her.

Jasper looked taken a back and looked between Peter and Bella not knowing who to yell at first. Once he noticed that Peter was keeping the teeth away from Bella he relaxed if only slightly.

Bella looked at Victoria and began to pace in front of the head.

"Victoria." Bella purred her name letting it roll off her tongue.

"I thought maybe I should keep you... just...like... this. Burry you in the yard letting you feel the pain of your lost mate and body. Letting it drive you insane. After all you made me an orphan and you caused me so much pain, physical, mental, and emotional. Maybe... just maybe I should return the favor let you stay not alive but not quite dead for a decade or two. Maybe a quick death would be too good for you. Hmmm what should I do Victoria? Should I allow you a quick death, or should I let you stay like this for a bit?"

Victoria's black dead eyes seemed to darken further, as they came to life with horror, pain, and fear, followed by such great anger. Bella giggled at the sight. Peter and Jasper took a breath as they both eyed Bella who seemed to have become so much darker. An evil side to her coming out that they never knew existed. They both experienced a shiver of fear as they looked upon this little warrior, who at this moment might even put Maria to shame. Jasper was doing his best to struggle against the flash backs brought on by the little demon in front of him.

"Diablita." Jasper breathed out. He was barely holding himself together. Peter cleared his throat gaining Bella's attention. She looked up at Peter and saw fear in his eyes, he looked towards Jasper; Bella stopped pacing and looked to Jasper the fear and pain in his eyes was enough to make her realize what he had just said and what that meaning could be. She shook her head and looked back to Victoria.

Bella let out a breath, "Though as much as a part of me would like that I will not stoop to your level, I will not darken myself." She looked to Peter and gave a nod. Peter chucked Victoria's head in the nearest fire, and Bella watched as the flames consumed her. At that moment everything came crashing down on Bella. And again, all she could see was Phil's head rolling in front of her and Char throwing him into the fire. A strangled gasp escaped her lips, followed by loud heart wrenching sobs, as her heart broke for what she had brought upon her parents.

Bella fell to her knees, clutching her arms around her chest as if trying to hold herself together. Feeling weak and useless, and realizing that all she ever brought to anyone who touched her was pain. She was no warrior; she was nothing but destruction. Peter knelt beside her holding her close as her tears fell from her eyes. Her pain finally hit Jasper, and with the pain combined from himself as well as her; The Major once again made himself known.

A low growl filled the area, Peter looked up and bowed his head to The Major, his Sire. As soon as The Majors arms reached for Bella, Peter handed her over. Stepping back his head bowed in respect and submission. Major grabbed his little mate and held her close to his chest, a rumbling purr emitting from his chest as he stroked her hair with one hand holding her close to his chest with the other. Knowing he could do nothing to stop her emotions and downward spiral until he could get her calmed a bit more. He began walking towards the Cullen house, towards Dr. Cullen; she would need her arm fixed and if he couldn't calm her, then maybe a sedative might be needed. As they neared the house, Peter spoke up,

"Major, she may need a moment in her room first before you take her to the Doc."

The Major gave a nod, while continuing up to the house, once he entered, he took her straight to her room sitting her down on her bed. Peter appeared beside him with a bottle of Jack;

"She needs somethin a little stronger than what she's been drinkin."

The Major took the bottle from Peter and placed it in Bella's hands. She made no inclination that she knew it was there. He was about to take it back when she blinked a few times, Jasper spun off the lid as she brought it to her lips.

She took a nice healthy pull from the bottle, as the liquid fire entered her mouth and slid down her throat; her mind was able to focus just a bit more. She let out a shuddering breath. She didn't even know how to get her emotions under control let alone trying to shield them from Jasper. As much as she hated that she was hurting him she just didn't have the strength to be her usual selfless self. Her emotions continued on their downward spiral.

The Major did not like the emotions coming off of her, the unworthiness, the blame, so many self-deprecating emotions; The Major struggled against them throwing every positive emotion at her swirling a cocktail and throwing them at her drowning her in them, but none of it worked; they just flowed off of her like water. She was the first human and vampire alike that he was unable to control fully. He let out a frustrated growl.

"Isabella!"

Finally, he broke through to her and she looked up her pain and tear-filled eyes looking in to his tortured and rage filled onyx. As soon as her eyes met his, his heart melted, his eyes and voice softened.

"Isabella, talk to me. Let me in. Tell me what happened. Let me help you."

Bella looked up at him and took a shuddering breath. She looked around and dug in her drawer next to her bed. Barley opening it, there was a pack of cigarettes and a lighter in front of her and an ashtray being placed on the nightstand next to her. She took another long pull from the bottle in her hand before placing it down and grabbing a cigarette out of the pack placing it between her lips she lit up and inhaled deeply.

She looked Jasper in the eyes, then over to Peter. Whispering so quietly it was barely a breath on her lips.

"Victoria turned Phil. Char destroyed him. My step dad. If he was up the on the mountain with us, where's my mom?"

In that moment, both vampire soldiers who stood in front of her; The God of War and his Captain both broke for this tiny warrior who had faced so much in such a very short amount of time.

Jasper immediately grabbed her up setting her in his lap as he held her close. She let the tears fall as she smoked her cigarette and drank her whiskey. She could be strong tomorrow, right now she was going to be weak; she was going to cry and mourn her family that were so savagely ripped away from her.
