The room was silent yet so loud. The tension was so palpable that one could cut through it with a knife. The expressions on the occupants were so grim one would think someone died.
Nighteye flipped through the pages of the massive document. Going back and forth just to make sure he did not miss a single detail. Horrified from both the boy's past and his idol's actions.
"I can't believe I'm saying this," Nighteye said with a sigh. "But I can't help but be disappointed in you All Might."
"I know," Toshinori said solemnly. He knew that he screwed up. Having your own super fan saying that they were disappointed in you just shows how badly you messed up.
"I can't believe you would do something so boneheaded!" Gran Torino shouted as he continuesly wacked his student with his cane. "Did you learn nothing from your history classes? The Joker ring any bells Toshinori!? Do you understand what could have happened if that boy snapped!?"
"I was just trying to…" Toshinori tried to reason.
"Excuses!" Recovery Girl shouted before he could voice his case. Using the giant syringe to hit the man. "Even if you didn't know the boy's past, he had just gone through a traumatic experience. He was looking to you for hope and you had the nerve to say what you did!?"
"I'm sorry, okay!" Toshinori said weakly. Raising both hands in appeasement. "I was just…"
"Just what!?" Recovery Girl cut in harshly. "Bitter!? You're a pro for crying out loud! Use your damned head! Everyone has experienced hardship and painful experiences. You may have suffered through more than what most would, but that does not give you the right to project your own failures and insecurities on a teenage boy!"
"And that's another thing!" Gran Torino tore at him. "Do you know how hypocritical you sound!?"
"..."
"You! Who initially did not have a quirk! Have the nerve to look down on a quirkless person!?" Gran Torino continued. "Nana must be rolling in her grave right now."
"..."
"To be honest All Might," Nighteye said. His face stoic; however, his tone more than made up for it. "I'm not surprised that the boy resents you. I mean not only did you crush his dreams, you also decided to interrogate him. Baselessly accusing him of being in league with All For One. How do you think anyone would react in his shoes?"
"I know," Toshinori said with a sigh.
"I think he's been admonished enough," Nezu interrupted. Though he did not raise his voice, the authority in his tone left no room for arguments.
The elders took a deep breath. Trying to calm themselves. Begrudgingly going back to their seats, they sent a glare at the skeletal man that told him the scolding was not over.
"This is a mess," Gran Torino said while rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"It is," Recovery Girl agreed.
"Do you have a plan to convince the boy to take up One For All?" Nighteye asked.
"No," Toshinori said hopelessly. "That's why I asked for you all to come. I can't think of anything that may earn me enough trust in Young Midoriya that he would at least listen to me."
"An apology would be a good start," Recovery Girl suggested.
"I've tried," Toshinori said. "But he isn't giving me a chance."
"Would you mind elaborating?" Nighteye asked. Curious as to how a man like All Might could not gain an opportunity to apologize. A boy who was once or still is a fan.
"The boy is actively avoiding me," Toshinori explained.
"And that's preventing you to apologize, how?" Nighteye said.
"I've tried holding him back in class but the moment the bell rings he's gone," Toshinori continued. "In public, the boy is never without company. Making it impossible to apologize without raising questions."
"How about outside school?" Gran Torino asked.
"Gone," Toshinori said. Seeing the question on their faces. "I usually can't find him. It's like he vanishes from the face of the Earth."
'That's because he does,' Nezu thought. Feeling a bit guilty at withholding information from the desperate hero.
"Then place a tracker on him," Nighteye suggested.
"I've tried," Toshinori said. "He still disappears and the trackers can't locate him or he's at a location I can't reach him."
"How about arranging a meeting?" Recovery Girl suggested.
"He flees at the sight or when the subject broaches me," All Might countered.
"Have you tried trapping him in a room?" Gran Torino suggested.
"He disappears from that too," Toshinori said.
"Are you sure the boy does not have a quirk?" Nighteye asked. Leafing through the files again.
"Yes, I can conduct another test in your presence if you want?" Recovery Girl said.
"Then how?" Gran Torino and Nighteye asked at the same time.
"I don't know," Toshinori replied.
With no way to reach the boy, the occupants of the sighed as they all thought unanimously.
'This is a mess.'
"What's going on!?" Ochako exclaimed.
They were excited. They had been told of the upcoming sports festival. Though they had just gone through an ordeal, they could not help but be excited. Animatedly talking about it as they left the classroom. Only to be met by a wall of students from the other classes.
"There's no way out!" Mineta cried. "What are they here for!?"
"Scoping out the competition, duh," Katsuki answered in a cocky manner. "Cuz we're the ones who survived a villain attack. Makes sense that they want a look before the sports festival."
'And that's him on a good day,' Izuku thought. Sighing at the blonde's attitude.
"No point though, so why don't you just fuck off!" Bakugo stated irritatedly. "Fucking extras!"
"Bakugo!" Tenya called while doing his arm choppy thing. "Stop calling people extras! You don't even know these people!"
"I did come to see what you guys were made of, true, but I didn't think you'd be this arrogant," a voice from the back of the crowd admitted. Moving forward, a boy with purple hair and a tired looking expression that could give Eraserhead a run for his money came out. "Are all the kids enrolled in the heroics department like this?"
"Huh!?" Bakugo responded. Glaring at the boy murderously. Behind him, Izuku and Tenya were sweating bullets as they shook their head.
"I gotta say. I'm a little disillusioned. If this is what you're offering," the boy said. "There are a lot of kids who wound up in the general education department because they failed to get into the heroics course. Did you know that? Based on the results, people can even be transferred into the heroics department. The reverse is also possible."
He looked at Katsuki in the eye. Completely unaffected by the explosive boy's glare. His brow furrowing. His eyes narrowing.
"Scope out the competition?" The boy scoffed. "If nothing else, a gen ed kid like me is thinking. Hey why don't I try pulling the rug from those heroic kids while they're on their high horses? For us… for me, this isn't just information gathering. This is a declaration of war."
'I need to beat them, even just one of them. I can transfer in even with that,' a desperate thought came to Izuku. 'Then I can prove that I'm not a villain.'
Izuku's eyes widened. The fear that passed through him evaporated. Empathy settling in its place.
'That's why. He suffered through a similar fate as me,' Izuku thought. "He comes off as in your face because he's willing to do just about anything to become a hero. Just like I was."
His mind overlaid an image of his past self onto one side of the purple haired boy. The look in their eyes were the same. The determination to prove everyone wrong. The feeling of wanting to be accepted by society. It was all the same. The only difference was their circumstance.
'If my spark hadn't ignited,' Izuku thought in retrospect. 'I might have turned out just like him. Maybe even worse.'
Everything turned to static as his mind began racing with thoughts. He remembered the many encounters he's had over the last year. He was humbled by their convictions. Their reasons were different but they were all the same. They were working hard towards their goal.
'I can't believe what an idiot I am!' Izuku thought.
He felt inadequate but determined. Since he had become a planeswalker, he had changed. That scrawny kid that was afraid of practically everything was still there; however, he had become stronger. He worked hard to be where he is. Looking at those around him.
'I will not lose to any of you!' He vowed. His eyes then landed on the explosive blonde. 'Especially you!'
Three days before the festival
In a frozen plane, Izuku clashed with Ajani. They sparred on a lake. Blows and spells echoed throughout the area.
Thud!
"Ptooey!" Izuku spat. Wiping his mouth on his arm.
"Again," came the voice of his leonin mentor.
Ajani stood at the other end of the frozen lake. Standing in a ready stance. Carefully observing his student. Smiling internally.
'Incredible,' Ajani thought in awe. "For someone who was not even a novice when we began, he is improving by leaps and bounds. He's absorbing everything I've taught him like a sponge. Learning from even the tiniest failures and improves upon it.'
Izuku charged the leonin. Trying to gather Æther as he advanced. He threw a punch which was evaded. Leaping forward to avoid a kick to his side. He raised his hand towards his opponent. Æther turning into flame.
Thud!
Izuku emptied the contents of his stomach as he crashed through a nearby block of ice. Flipping backwards to reoriented himself. Saving his face from skidding on the ice.
"Not fast enough, yet," Ajani said. "Still, the fact that Æther gathered while you moved shows that you're making progress."
"Sorry," Izuku apologized.
"There's no need to apologize," Ajani said. "It is not an easy skill to learn. Even veteran planeswalkers have trouble with it. You're making good progress."
Izuku did not know how to respond. He was so used to people looking down on him that he expected them to be angry or frustrated that he could not do something. Having them acknowledge improvements was foreign to him.
"Anyways, we should continue with your training," Ajani said. He moved a few paces away and readied himself.
Izuku nodded before charging his opponent again. Æther gathering around him. Jumping to the side when he was close, he avoided the claw that came his way. He sent a sidekick to the leonin's ribs who blocked it and countered with a round house. Though he evaded the hit, he saw that the attack had enough force to break a tree at the edge of the clearing. Seeing the Æther, he leapt towards him in an attempt to stop him.
"No you don't!" Izuku shouted. Raising his hand towards his mentor. Turning the Æther into flame and blasted the leonin point blank. The attack sent Ajani back. He wanted to follow up but the smile on the leonin's face stopped him.
The ice beneath him cracked. Before he could move, the ice collapsed, sending him into the freezing water below. An arm shot from the surface, grabbed his shirt and pulled him back to the surface. Panting as his lungs began to regain their function causing him to pant. When he gained his sight back, he was met with his mentor's stern face.
"Always mind your surroundings," Ajani said before putting his student down.
Day before the festival
Boom!
A smoldering crater was left where a boulder once was. Pebbles raining everywhere. Nearby, a boy with green hair stood. His ghostly mentor hovered beside him.
"Good," Ugin said. "Your spell proficiency is getting better. They have also become quite powerful. If you reign in your power and use just enough, you'll be able to cast your spells faster and you'll be less tired."
"I see," Izuku said.
Reflecting on the advice that his teacher gave him, he began mumbling. Pacing back and forth. Talking faster with each line.
Ugin sweat dropped. He can understand the thoughts that were going through his protege's mind and they did make sense. He was impressed that a human can process impossibly large amounts of information. In his lifetime, people capable of doing such a feat were rare. Some planeswalkers learn to do so but only after they have been one in a while. The problem was Izuku's barely existent self-esteem. His mumble storms usually start out fine and are usually helpful. The problem occurs when it takes a bit more time. During those times, his mind takes a dark turn and self deprecating thoughts fills his mind. Ugin has been trying to avoid and hopefully stop it with time.
'I better stop him before it gets worse,' Ugin thought. He reached out telepathically and called out into the boy's mind. 'Izuku!'
Hearing his mentor brought the young planeswalker out of his thoughts. He turned back to the dragon. An apprehensive look on his face before he schooled it and fixed a smile on it. Something the spirit dragon did not fail to notice.
"First of all, relax. You're not in trouble," Ugin said. "You were thinking about my advice too much. Do not forget that mastery of something takes experience. Experience you do not have yet. Do not berate yourself for something you have no control over. Don't just look at the shortcomings, look at your success. I for one am proud of you."
"T...thank y...you," Izuku croaked as tears fell from his eyes like a waterfall.
"Are you ready to continue?" Ugin asked which was answered with a nod. "All right, sit down and close your eyes."
Izuku did as he was told. Sitting down in a cross legged position. Wondering what it was that they were about to do but did not question it. His mentor never did things without reason and not something that would be detrimental to his growth. He then heard the dragon's voice in his head.
"We've traveled through planes... Now you must journey inwards…" Ugin's voice came. "What do you really fear? It's inside you... there is no turning back."
Izuku traversed his mind. His memories played one by one. The memory of when he was told that he was quirkless. The feeling of devastation he felt when his world crumbled. His mother repeatedly apologizing to him. The whispers of the other children in preschool. The pathetic attempts of the preschool teachers to comfort him. The day that Katsuki began bullying him for trying to protect another kid. Only for him to turn on Izuku and begin the torture that would be the the rest of his days until the Sludge Villain incident. All of the things that happened, all because he was born quirkless.
"Your quirklessness was not your fault. It was never your choice," Ugin stated. "Still, something good came of it."
"Huh?" Izuku said in confusion.
"Indomitable will," Ugin answered. "Your tenacity in the face of the world that does not accept you has made your will almost unbreakable."
"But…" Izuku countered.
"But nothing!" Ugin cut him off. "I have seen it, Young Midoriya. You are strong, in body, mind and soul."
"You may not have been born with a quirk, but you were born with something more. You were born with the Spark. A spark that ignited. You, Izuku Midoriya are a planeswalker!" the spirit dragon continued. "You must remember that you are no longer bound to this world. This world is but one of many. Keep an open mind and learn from them. Build upon the lessons and experiences you've had in your life. I believe that if you devote yourself, you can become something else entirely. In you, I sense a potential that could surpass all those before you. You will become a planeswalker, a man, a hero unlike any other!"
"It's the UA Sports Festival! The one time each year that our students compete in a ruthless grand battle!" Mic's voice boomed from the arena speakers. "First up… the miraculous stars that brushed off a villain attack! From the hero course's Class 1A!"
Walking out of the tunnel, the class was met with cheers. The feeling of expectation that was emanating from the audience was intimidating. It was borderline suffocating.
"Whoaa!" Izuku said in awe as he looked around. "That's a lot of people!"
"And we're expected to put on the best performance we can," Tenya stated. "I guess this is another skill required if we hope to become heroes."
"Following them are classes B to H," Mic introduced unenthusiastically. Which gained Class A the ire of the other first years.
'Favoritism much,' some thought as they looked towards the voice hero.
"We're just here to make the others look good," one of the other students whined.
"Hard to get motivated," another groaned.
"Without further adieu! The one who placed first on the entrance exam! The boy with many talents! The representative for the first years!" Midnight said with a crack of her whip, gaining everyone's attention. She gestured towards the nervous green teen. "Izuku Midoriya!"
Everyone turned towards the young planeswalker. With his brain unable to process what Midnight had just said, he looked behind him. Expecting someone to be there. He was met by a wall.
"No, it's you Midoriya!" Midnight said with a deadpan look.
"What!?" Resounded all over the stadium.
"Deku!" Bakugo growled. Seething over the fact that he did not take first place like he thought. They did not send the results with the acceptance letter. To Katsuki, they did not need to. Afterall, what other result could there have been?
"It seems that you're all surprised!" Midnight said after seeing the reactions of most of the people there. "But you can ask those questions later! Izuku Midoriya front and center please!"
"Eep!" Izuku yelped but obeyed.
"That's the student rep?" One of the students whispered to another. "He looks so nervous that he might pee his pants."
"Are they sure they didn't make a mistake?" Another asked.
Looking at those around him, he shivered. The glares he was receiving were both fear inducing and bloodthirsty. A part of his mind screamed at him to run. He was about to do it, until…
'Don't listen to them,' A voice advised telepathically. 'You're here because you deserve to be. Just do your best. Everything will work itself out.'
'Who are you!?' Izuku screamed in his mind. Looking around for the owner. He could feel someone in his head. Trying and failing to block out the mental invader.
'Relax,' the voice said.
'How can I relax!?' Izuku retorted. 'There's someone in my head!'
'If I wanted to attack you, I would have done so already,' the voice countered. 'I'm quite impressed with your defense but it is not enough.'
'Oh right,' Izuku thought. 'So what is it that you want?'
'Win and find out,' the voice challenged mysteriously. 'Focus on the festival for now.'
'Ok,' Izuku replied.
'Good luck!' The voice bid. 'Not that you need it.'
'Thank you,' Izuku told the voice.
'You're welcome,' the voice replied. 'Now show everyone what you got!'
'Yes!' Izuku complied. Returning his focus back to the festival just in time as he reached the podium. He felt as if the world was seeing him for the first time. The smiles, the glares, and the undecipherable looks, they were all focused on him. The feeling of anticipation and excitement was riveting. Taking a deep breath.
"Thank you for the introduction, Midnight-sensei," Izuku said. "On this joyous day, I am both happy and humbled to be a student of this prestigious school that has been producing great pro heroes. Until a year ago, I was thought to be quirkless. So I was a pariah of this society."
A few people gasped while others cringed. There were others who felt guilty while watching the green teen. There were also those that were angry.
"Last year, a certain person told me something. 'You can become a hero.'"
A spirit dragon hovering invisibly in the staff booth smiled.
"Ever since coming to this institution. I've made many friends. The first ones since I was four years old."
His friends smiled proudly while Bakugo tsk'd and looked away.
"That being said. Please don't hold it against me if I'm a total nerd or do something dorky because I'll cry you a river."
A lot of people laughed or giggled at this. Izuku's demeanor suddenly became intense.
"Parents, guests, and teachers, please bestow upon us your guidance and encouragement as we perform our best and go beyond!"
His right fist shot into the air.
"Plus Ultra!"
Cheers erupted as the audience copied him. A silhouette of the number one hero seemed to have been standing behind the boy.
Up in the stands, All Might deflated as the boy reminded him of both himself and his master. The more he got to know about the boy, the more he regretted his actions at the beginning of the year. Though he wracked his brain on ways to get the boy to accept One For All but every scenario he thought of ended in failure. He even contemplated on asking Melissa to set up a meeting as she seemed to have gotten close to the boy and his friends but decided against it because she would more than likely side with the Young Midoriya over him. Sighing at his predicament, he returned his focus back at the match.
"All right, with that, we can move directly into our first event!" Midnight said.
'Oh thank kami,' Izuku thought. Something that allowed him to avoid an interrogation by his classmates.
"Onto the preliminaries!" Mic's voice boomed from the intercom. "Lots of fine folk choke on their own tears here every year!"
"This!" Midnight announced as the roulette stopped on an obstacle race. "It's a race between all the first years! A 4km ring that goes around the stadium! You're free to do anything as long as you stay in the course! So let's get cracking!"
The students piled up in front of the entrance of the course. Faces determined as their own respective reasons flowed into their minds.
"On your mark!"
The students crouched down. Readying themselves to rush in as soon as they got the go ahead.
"Get set!"
Æther swirled around Izuku. Catching the eyes of many.
"What!?" Many voiced out as they stared at the green haired teen. Distracted at the spectacle before their eyes.
"Go!"
Author's Notes:
Happy new year dear readers!
With the start of the year comes a new chapter. Hopefully you guys liked it. Tell me what you guys think any ideas, constructive comments and errors you can find would be great help. If people are still interested then I'll keep it active.
By the way, anyone have any idea what to call this chapter because I'm drawing a blank.
Stormgate:
That's good to know. The story was supposed to be relatable from people who have no clue what mtg is to the aficionados of the lore.
To be honest I have no clue about the pairings either. I'll think about it along the way. That's true. He does need to have deeper bonds for something I'm thinking about. I'll keep that in mind thanks.
The-Challengerfortheunnatural:
Still deciding on that.
AshimaBlackRaven:
Thank you.
117:
Thank you.
Proper Prose:
I see. Not really that overpowered because I've only been limiting him to non-rare spells barring the times he's cast a spell on pure instinct because of the situation. Not to mention he hasn't summoned creatures yet.
He didn't planeswalk intentionally. His spark ignited when he was knocked out. Not really sure about that though. I'm basing my logic with the fact that there were planeswalkers before him had incidents at least once when they have a major event in their made aware of it. Example: Jace literally memory wiped his master. Chandra, if I remember correctly, burnt down the place were she was being persecuted by accident before it accidentally sent her to Regatha.
You might want to look at the scene where Jace suddenly appeared in the hull of the Weatherlight. Scaring the passengers. He gave a good explanation of how he did it.
Really, then Nahiri and other artifices in the lore were copying of someone? Hmm... I might have missed that. Nahiri created the hedrons, right? So everyone in those planes like Kaladesh were shams?
You have to remember that what Izuku did was basically a crime. All Might being who at the time could be described as the epitome of justice would be bound by duty to turn him in. Unless he suddenly has double standards. That and the fact that because he was practically Melissa's uncle in all but blood, she did not one to place him in that position.
As much as I want to stick to canon, doing so too closely will: 1. Make this story nothing but a retelling of bnha. 1.1. Copyright infringements. 2. True, it will igniting the spark doesn't suddenly increase his physical abilities. Spells like Rancor do though and I'm pretty sure Ugin being an ancient spirit dragon would have learned at least one version of a spell like that in his lifetime. 3. Ajani has been to New Phyrexia and from what I read about the place was traumatizing. So Dagobah Beach being in that state would hit a nerve.
You have to remember that Ajani has met many heroes from different planes. Even trained some. So his standards are going to be a bit high. Not to mention his definition of hero would be different to the what it was portrayed in the bnha universe.
Inko's been through enough. I'm guessing you want a scene where she almost has a heart attack seeing a dragon that's practically a ghost with a leonin accompanying her child when she opens the front door. Then drown them when she cries a river.
He's not just training how to cast. He's split between two mentors who both sound like hard taskmasters. That and regular school. Think how time consuming that is.
Um... I'm not sure where in chapter 2 you read that. Would you mind giving the exact line? Last I check it went down the same way before Ugin taught him how to planeswalk properly avoiding All Might in the process.
Limited telepathy. He can only hear thoughts with strong emotions attached to them at the moment. Welp, can't really blame them on that. Any reason for bringing it up?
That is something I am planning to explain later if people are interested.
It's literally a place where almost everyone is superhuman and not know or not care about their existence. They don't need to hide.
Yes, and evolution should not have been possible if we're going by your logic. Every planeswalker is different. Their skills vary as well. Just because we've only seen planeswalkers who are specialized does not mean we will not see one who is not.
But that's what makes it fun. Just because is challenging does not mean one should give up. If that were the case we would not have bnha because Izuku would have just given up and more than like take Bakugo's advice and take a swan dive of the roof. Yeah there's a storyline reason for why he has all five color but that's further down the line.
Wait when did Izuku fight a Phyrexian? I don't remember writing that. If you were talking about him slicing through the bots. If you reread the chapter, it was described how he did that. If you need a visual look up Arm with Aether. That was not an energy beam. In the heat of the moment, he casted multiple putrefy. Which actually shows that he still hasn't really got a good handle of his power yet. Especially since there were people around him who could have been hit with Ochako being the closest.
Hehe just be a little patient. If the story continues it will all be explained. Regarding the fight between him and Bakugo. Yeah it wouldn't be a contest. It wasn't supposed to be. Like Izuku said. All men are not born equally.
Again, sticking to the canon too much would cause problems. Especially since this is a fanfiction. Not a retelling of the story. I will at least be using major events but they might not even happen the same way. Nana is appearing before Toshinori because the past users has decided on who they want as a successor. Pretty sure it was stated in chapter 8. Let me reread that chapter and get back to you on that. Not that OFA is going to be Izuku's anytime soon. There's also the problem of him willingly accepting it too.
Not exactly, if you go back to that scene. You'll see that Todoroki only began to have an interest in Izuku because he overheard Ochako and Tenya's conversation.
Hopefully I addressed most if not all the issues you pointed out.
Well that was uncalled for. Not to mention hurtful.
Darth Jar Jar:
Thank you for coming to my defense and for the support.
Stormgate:
Thank you for coming to my defense and for the support. You're right.
I'll do my best and if people are still interested in the story.
mjcsandboxgames:
Not yet. Angels are pretty strong though, it would make him too powerful if he can summon even the low tier ones of those monsters. Maybe an Ornothopter?
Guest:
Thank you for coming to my defense and for the support. I'll try to keep that in mind.
Kaiju Alpha:
Yep, he's here.
The Popo:
Thank you for coming to my defense.
DragonKing49:
Thank you. That is very heartening. I'll do my best and take this story as far as I can.
