Series 3, Episode 5, pt 1 ~ House of Revelations
KT went straight to her chair in Miss Denby's classroom, on the hunt for Joy's family tree, whilst Camilla turned to the whiteboard to draw rude pictures. "it's not here." KT groaned, turning around just as Eddie wandered into the room and Camilla stepped back from her handy work.
"It has to be here," Camilla turned to look confused.
"why would my dad hate family trees?" Eddie asked the two girls in the room, "that doesn't make sense."
KT's eyes landed on Miss Denby's bag as Camilla shrugged at Eddie's question. "what do you when things get confiscated here?" KT asked the pair as she wandered over to the bag. "Just steal it back... right?"
The two looked at her understanding what she was hinting at, but did she really want them to go hunting through a teacher's bag just for some stupid family tree project?
"Denby's bag?" Eddie questioned clearly thinking the same as Camilla.
KT nodded her head at them.
Eddie sighed and walked into the room hunting through it half-heartedly not expecting to find anything until he felt something cool and metallic that defiantly wasn't a set of car keys.
"Guys... What's this?"
Pulling his hand out, he let out a gasp, followed by KT and Camilla as they set their eyes on what he had found in the bag. A long slim key. At first glance, Camilla thought it was KT's, but as she looked at it more, she realised it wasn't. This one was darker, more silver, whereas KT's was more of a golden bronze, and the key Eddie had in his hand had a full moon on it apposed to KT's crescent moon.
"What do you think you're doing?" the sharp tone of Miss Denby's accusing voice caused the three students to turn around in hast to see the woman stood at the door to her classroom eyeing them up suspiciously. "I said, what do you think you are doing?"
Eddie was quicker than the girls, though he saw Camilla take a small step in front of KT as she eyed the teacher suspiciously. "you know what," the boy told the teacher in an upbeat tone, as he pulled a bunch of papers off the desk and showed them to the teacher, "I forgot to hand in my assignment, I was just trying to slip it into your bag."
"Hmm..." Miss Denby frowned as she took the papers off Eddie glancing from him to the girls next to him, before glancing over the essay she had just taken off him. "Well, if you forget again, just tell me," she told them, pushing past the three to grab her open bag missing the small smiles the teenagers shared to one another. Camilla not missing the woman as she pulled out the key from the bag as if to make sure it was still there. The teacher turned to face them all with a friendly smile on her face, "I'm not a monster."
"sure..." Eddie nodded as she then walked out.
The moment the cost was clear KT rounded on the magical pair, "the key, you guys saw the key right?"
"yeah..." Eddie nodded his head as he let out a sigh.
"It was like your one but not." Camilla frowned glancing to the door.
"How is that even possible?" KT asked the pair, causing Eddie to glance to Camilla with a sigh. She was the more cluey of the pair having done these kinds of adventures far more than him; he was going to take her lead on this one.
"We need to find out more about Denby," the Protector told the pair simply her eyes not moving from the doorway the woman had left from. Something was missing from the picture the teacher was trying to present.
At Anubis house, Joy found herself sat on Fabian's desk chair whilst the boy was crouched over on his bed looking at his laptop. The information gremlin, as Camilla had often called Fabian when he sat like that, had returned to Sibuna once again.
Joy shook her head slightly amused before opening up her history textbook and let out a small laugh as she saw the folded family tree tucked snuggling inside of it. "Oh, here's my family tree. I put it in my textbook," she informed the male twin with a laugh.
"oh, right..." Fabian responded in a half-interested way, his eyes on his laptop screen.
"I hope KT didn't get into too much trouble looking for it..." Joy sighed slightly as she glanced over the family tree before folding it up once again and looking to Fabian, who she was meant to be helping though she didn't feel like she was doing much of anything really. "Do you want me to have a look?"
Fabian's head shot up at Joy's question, "Hmmm?" it took him a second before he computed what the girl said, "oh no, no... I've got this." he told her reassuringly before going back to his granddad and uncle's journals, eyes flitting to the computer screen now and then as he went to type something.
"Are you sure?" Joy asked after a few seconds of silence bar the occasional tapping of the keyboard as Fabian added something to the computer program Patricia had installed to help him figure out the clue. "I think I'll be able to help, not that it isnt fun just being here..."
"ancient letting form..." Fabian mumbled as his eyes widened at something in the journal of his grandfathers, Joy tilting her head but the chicken scratch on the page reminding her too much of Fabian's own handwriting made no sense to her.
Just then Alfie came bursting into the room with a huge smile on his face, as he glanced between Joy and Fabian, "Well? Got that bad boy translated yet?"
"Yes," Fabian picked up the clue as if to read it, "it reads... bring Fabian a drink from the fridge, Alfie,"
This caused Joy to let out a small laugh as Alfie squinted his eyes at the boy and his books. "those things are always so cryptic..." was his reply as he made himself comfortable on Eddie's bed with a grin causing Fabian to shake his head good-naturedly.
Just then Patricia and Amber came strolling into the room looking around at everyone present, "Victor is putty in my hands... only Camilla could have done a better job than me." She boasted to them all.
"Wait," Alfie sat up straighter as Amber closed the bedroom door, "you got Amber's phone back?"
"I have four missed calls, but the battery has died!" Amber was focused on her phone screen looking appalled at what she saw apparently, she then glanced to the room, "Anyone got a charger? Fabian?"
Fabian shook his head, "Cam got the new phone. I got a laptop... sorry Amber." He muttered to the girl before looking back at the screen as Patricia wandered over to see how her software was holding up.
"I think Fabian is making great progress..." Alfie decided to change the subject.
"I can tell what most of the symbols mean." Fabian told them all with a slight shrug, "it's just the way they are arranged... it's like some code or something. I just can't figure it out." He groaned frustratedly throwing the paper to the end of his bed.
Amber reached over and elegantly picked up the paper and took a good look at it before letting out a gasp, "I have an idea."
"you know how to break the code?" Alfie asked in amazement.
Amber shook her head at her boyfriend, "no, just a sweet design for a t-shirt... are Rutter Archaeology and discovery willing to discuss Merch?" She glanced to Fabian, who just looked at her bemused as Joy took the paper off her. "you know I'd have done so well at Fashion School." Amber sighed, looking around the room.
"yeah, but your good at this too," Alfie told the girl reassuringly getting up off the bed and wandering over to her.
Amber nodded her head slightly, "practically saved the world twice, but I don't like to brag."
Patricia let out a laugh at this comment from the blonde.
Joy, however, took the opportunity to study the note for the first time, "you know the same symbol over and over again."
"What's that?" Fabian asked, looking to the girl.
Joy turned the paper around and showed the boy the symbol. "this one... I'm sure you would have figured it out though."
"your right..." Fabian whispered in awe.
"What's the symbol?" Alfie asked as he raced over to the bed, Fabian pushing the laptop forward as he typed on it, all the Sibuna's watching as he isolated on of the squares and enhanced it to show them all the symbol. Of a star shape and a crescent moon.
"I have a million other things I'd rather be doing guys... what is going on," was the pleasant greeting Camilla gave Eddie and KT as she casually met them by the wall the two were hiding behind as they eyed up the gatehouse after getting changed out of her school uniform. The girls mind going to the mountain of Magical theory homework she had to do.
The gatehouse was a large Victorian building in the same red stone as the rest of the school which served as the main entrance to the school's grounds. It was also the building where any teachers who couldn't find a residence in the nearby village could stay in. However, it came with the job of the watchman to make sure students didn't sneak out after hours. For the last few years, it had been occupied by a small dumpy man who used to teach Geography who rarely cared who came and went, but after his retirement, Miss Denby had taken up the post in the gatehouse and Camilla had a feeling the teacher wasn't going to be so relaxed as the old resident.
"Camilla get down!" Eddie grabbed the girls arm and yanked her to the ground causing a glare to form on Camilla's face.
"This is where she is living?" KT looked up at the house in horror, not realising the formidable building held a resident when she had driven through its gates at the start of term.
"Yep..." Camilla whispered, nodding her head to the girl.
"Mr Brindle, a Geography teacher, used to stay here, but he retired," Eddie whispered not taking his eyes off the building.
The clicking of heels could be heard, and the three students ducked out of sight, peering over the wall just enough so they could see the female teacher walk to a door in the wall of the arch that the gates were built into. Camilla noticing her press on a keypad before pushing open the door. Someone had upgraded the gatehouse security. Great. Just great.
She turned around to see Eddie had his phone out using the camera to zoom in on what the woman had pressed on the keypad, "3, 7, 6, 2...and I didn't get the last one." The Osirian groaned quietly looking to Camilla who pulled an annoyed face.
"So?" came a high pitched squeak from KT, "it's not like we're going to go in there."
The Osirian and Protector duo looked to the new girl with amused looks, of course, they were going in there. KT looked back at them both in horror.
"we're going in there?"
"If your key fits anywhere it's going to be in the gatehouse," Eddie whispered to KT. "I feel it."
"So what we... wait until she leaves and then sneak in?" KT nervously asked.
"look who has finally understanding out methods, Jerk Face," Camilla laughed as she and Eddie sat down in the grass getting comfortable for their wait, Eddie joining in with the girl's laughter as KT took one more look at the formidable building the pair were far too relaxed at breaking into.
"Mara, do you have any coloured pens? It's for the Family tree project..."
Joy and Patricia paused in the doorway of Mara, Amber and Camilla's bedroom, the question fading from Joy's lips as they took in Mara in workout gear doing a weird mix of yoga and weightlifting in her portion of the room.
"Do I have pens?" Mara simply turned not stopping her weird workout as Patricia shut the door behind the pair. Mara lunging forward and opening the top drawer of her bedside table to reveal a colour coded coloured pen drawer.
"Ohh." Joy smiled, reaching in and taking what she needed.
"I thought Mr Sweet told you not to do the family tree?" Mara asked the girl.
Joy scoffed, "since when did anyone around here listen to teachers?"
"Since when did you work out?" Patricia couldn't help but add looking to Mara before settling down on the beanbag at the bottom of the girl's bed.
Mara let out a sigh and shook her head, "I needed to work out my frustration with Alfie. He's barged in on me and Jerome's dates twice now."
"Why? What's up with him?" Patricia couldn't help but ask, though a look she shared with Joy told her the hunch she had about who Alfie truly shipped with Jerome was probably correct.
"Stuff on his mind?" Mara shook her head and shrugged. Who truly understood Alfie? "honestly he wouldn't say what? Well, he started too but then got distracted..."
Patricia let out a small chuckle, "your way too polite Mara."
"Yeah, tell Alfie to get lost." Joy nodded her head as she rummaged through the pen drawer. "be more assertive."
"Me?!" Mara couldn't help but laugh as she looked to Joy, "what about you?"
"I am very assertive." Joy countered.
"Except where Fabian is concerned." Mara teased knowingly.
Joy frowned and glanced between her friends, "is it that obvious?" Patricia giving the girl a nod.
"Why haven't you asked him out yet?"
"Other than my fear of Camilla?" Joy asked, causing Patricia to laugh and Mara to roll her eyes.
"Camilla isn't scary," Mara argued, causing Patricia to scoff as Joy sat on Mara's bed. "What?"
"I don't know what Camilla you know, but the one I do is pretty scary when she wants to be," Patricia told Mara who frowned slightly.
"Camilla just seems scary because she has far too much money and can act like a bitch sometimes." Mara informed the two simply. "she doesn't scare me." She added, causing Joy to bit her lip as she shared an amused look with Patricia. If only Mara knew the truth about her roommate, then she might be a little more scared of her and her powers.
"Anyway," Joy decided to change the subject, "it's not that simple with Fabian."
"I think we need a pact!" Mara firmly spoke, "from now on, we do not get pushed around."
Patricia laughed, "like I need any more encouragement to say what I think."
Mara shrugged and looked to Joy, who was thinking over the nerdy girls' words, "no, I quite like the idea." Joy said quietly, "Cam and Amber have their sister thing, why can't we have ours."
"Because we're not lame?"
Joy got to her feet and drew a clover on her hand as she spoke, "the Anubis Sisterhood." Patricia sighed as she got to her feet, watching Mara hold her hand out to let Joy draw the same thing on her's. Joy then grabbing Patricia and drawing the Clover on her too.
"Our housemates won't know what hit them," Mara added with a confident smile.
The night had gone dark, and Camilla had kept Eddie and KT entertained with small magical fireworks. KT looking gobsmacked the first time Camilla had done this until the girl and Eddie looked at her with the small phrase, "What? Magic is real." As if that would explain it all.
There was a creaking of a door causing Camilla to snap her hand shut and her magic to fizzle away, causing the three to look up just in time to see Miss Denby exiting her residence. The woman slamming the door and making sure it was locked before walking off into the darkness of the night.
"Come on, guys," Camilla smiled getting to her feet and vaulting over the wall with ease in heels KT looked at the girl in astonishment, causing Eddie to laugh as he jumped over it too. The pair far too excited about the whole adventure, KT following them slightly more nervous. The great evil still in the back of her mind.
Camilla was on lookout in case Denby came back as Eddie focused his attention on the keypad. "3, 7, 6, 2..." He pressed the numbers he knew the woman had pressed before pausing trying to figure out the last number.
"Come on Eddie... we've got to get in there..." KT whispered to him frantically.
"Well, what's the worst that could happen if I guess?" Eddie asked the girls.
KT looking at him in panic, "I learnt Magic is real tonight, so I'm assuming that a lot could go wrong."
"That's crazy talk," Eddie scoffed slightly causing Camilla to turn to him.
"Yeah I'm sure someone as smart as Denby didn't alarm her door or anything like that..." she added causing KT to panic slightly more and Eddie to go back to taking the matter seriously.
"well KT pick a number. 0 or 9?" He spoke up after looking at the keyboard.
"Why me?" KT asked instantly.
"that way we can blame someone when it goes wrong," Eddie muttered without thinking receiving a backhand to his head instantly from Camilla who glared at him. The boy rubbed at his head before looking to KT apologetically.
KT smiled at Camilla slightly before looking at the keyboard herself, "9." She spoke up softly.
"9?" Eddie questioned.
"Seriously?" Camilla hissed at the boy; it was in times like this she missed Nina. The girl was stubborn, but she wasn't frustrating in the same way Eddie was.
"What's wrong with 9?" KT argued, looking to Eddie.
"Well, nothing it's just..." Eddie stuttered a little, "3, 7, 6, 2, 9? It just sounds wrong, okay." Eddie glanced at the keyboard, "3, 7, 6, 2, 6... Yeah... sounds better."
Camilla groaned as she watched KT open her mouth to argue, and the girl leaned between the pair and pressed the number 9. "we're going with 9!"
As the girl pressed the number, other than the hushed screams KT and Eddie said of her name, a clicking could be heard as the door to their right unlocked. KT looking up and pressing on the door watching it open softly, the girl slipping into the shadows inside as Camilla rounded on her Osirian, "why are you starting childish arguments on a mission? We don't have the time for this."
Eddie rolled his eyes as he and Camilla followed KT inside, "I am not causing childish argue..."
His words faltered and faded as they took in the interior of the gatehouse. The first thing that popped into all their minds was 'CREEPY'. The place seriously needed a makeover. The main foyer had a large staircase much like the Anubis one running up the left wall, under it an elevator of sorts. In the centre was a small table with knickknacks of all sorts. Oil paintings lining the muted purple wallpapered walls and all the finishing's were of dark wood which added to the eery atmosphere.
"The key has to fit somewhere," Eddie spoke upbringing the girls back to the focus of their mission.
"in this place, it could be a portal to the 2000s." KT shuddered looking around the room.
"you know, I might accidentally leave some interior decorating books here, maybe she'll get the hint..." Camilla mumbled as they split up, the girls face looking at a weird prancing pony oil painting. Her comment causing a small laugh from KT, the sound causing all three teens to relax a little in the spooky environment.
Eddie wandered over to the elevator, eying it up until he noticed a golden button on the wall left of it probably for the elevator.
"Seriously you two, do all evil people live in ancient houses?" KT asked as she saddled up to Camilla, both girls tilting their heads at the panting.
"We just need to keep looking," Eddie informed the two who were being distracted.
Camilla turned on her heels and glanced around the room, "well if it does belong here, there must be a clue here to help us."
KT rushed to the centre of the room where a small comforter had been pushed next to the table, the girl picking up a bag, "I found something..." She whispered to the pair, going through the bag and pulling out a knitting set causing Camilla to erupt into giggles, "a mystical ball of yarn!" KT grinned at the giggling Camilla as Eddie gave the pair a disapproving look.
"Guys, come on." He pleaded with them, "there is defiantly something wrong with Miss Denby. Please start looking."
The two girls pulled faces to one another at Eddie's instructions but did spread out to look around the room.
"So, are we doing Higher Math or Advanced higher science tonight?" Jerome asked trying not to grimace at the boring books that sat on the coffee table in the living room in front of him and Mara. He knew he had no leg to stand on comparing Mara to Camilla, but he couldn't help but feel if he was on a date with the latter doing homework wouldn't be counted as such.
"Whatever," Mara shrugged with a contented smile at Jerome, "I'm just glad I've got you all to myself at last."
Jerome smiled sadly as he looked at the books, "I'm sorry about Alfie..." he started with a sigh trying to think up an excuse for his friend other than the fact the boy didn't want him to be dating Mara but another girl in the household, "the guy worries a lot, most of the time he worries about stuff like werewolf's, but it still counts as a serious thing in his mind." The boy picked up the math textbook with a frown knowing there was more to do in that than the science textbook, "Math it is then."
Mara couldn't help the small smitten smile that slipped onto her face as Jerome picked up the book, "you are so good to me, Jerome."
Jerome's head lifted and looked to the girl to his right. Only Mara would find doing homework as romantic, he'd rather do anything but it honestly.
"But..." Mara surprised him by taking the textbook from him and throwing it back on the table, "study can wait."
"HEY STUDY BUDDIES!" Alfie came charging from the kitchen where he clearly was not so subtly listening in to the conversation ready to interrupt it the moment it sounded like a date. Jara was not going to sail any further if he and Amber could help it. He was tasked with Jara control whiles Amber dealt with Camilla control. The pair would deal with Jerome the moment Alfie found out why Jara was even a thing.
"Alfie..." Mara groaned whilst Jerome couldn't help but look a little amused at his friend blatant meddling.
The dark-skinned boy throwing himself on the armchair next to the pair and smiling at them both. "with all this stuff with Amber going on, I have gotten soo far behind." He told Mara with a smile as he leaned over to pick up Jerome's notebook the boy not arguing as he hid his amused smile behind his hand, leaning back on the couch. "Which of you want to test me on the life cycle of an elephant?"
Jerome felt a nudge in his side and looked around to see Mara with a scowl looking up at him. Jerome sighed and looked to his friend, "Alfie..."
Alfie looked at him expectantly.
"Listen... as my wingman, could you maybe, give Mara and me a little bit of space?"
As the boys spoke this missed Mara glancing down at her hand were the clover Joy drew was still there.
"oh!" Alfie laughed slightly, "I see I guess I could...
"ALFIE!" Mara screamed, turning to look at the boy, shocking both him and Jerome who looked at her wide-eyed. "don't you get it! We don't want you here! GET OUT!"
"Mara..." Jerome looked at the girl in horror, "what in the gods..."
"No need to shout..." Alfie squeaked slightly getting to his feet. Giving Jerome a look the girl couldn't decipher before he ran from the room.
Jerome sighed and leaned back on the couch, understanding what Alfie was hinting at. Maybe he didn't quite understand Mara as well as he did Camilla, which honestly complicated things more. If he was to dump Mara now, how was the girl going to react?
"Alfie... I'm sorry!" Mara called after the boy as he ran from the room, after a glance at Jerome's horrific expression in her direction. "I shouldn't have said..."
Alfie came bouncing back in with an even more determined look on his face, "well if you insist on me staying." He told the pair, settling down between them.
"Mara, what's gotten into you?" Jerome asked the girl as Alfie leaned forward to grab another book, not getting a response from the girl in question as she turned to look at her own textbook.
"if you guys loved me so much, you'd go into the kitchen and would make me a sandwich." Alfie knew he was pushing his luck, but Jerome leapt to his feet at the chance to clear his head a little.
"I'll be right back." He informed the two.
Mara glanced to Alfie and sighed, "Is there some reason you can't study with Amber? Or Camilla?"
"I can't really look either of them in the eye at the moment... for different reasons," Alfie told Mara honestly.
"I might be a little more understanding if I knew what you did," Mara told Alfie.
Alfie looked at Mara and shook his head, "After the way you just shouted at me?! No way dude!" he put a hand up in her face. Like he would tell Mara that he was interrupting them because of a huge mission to get Jamilla together like they should be.
"Alfie...I'm sorry," Mara pleaded with him a little, "Is there some way I could make it up to you?"
Alfie smirked, "Well..."
Fabian was stood by the telescope in his room, looking up at the stars. He had never told Camilla this, but since they moved into Anubis House at 15, he had arranged his telescope, so it was always looking at his sister's favourite constellation.
"What you looking at?" Joy's soft question caused a small smile to appear on Fabian's face. He truly was appreciating everything Joy was doing to keep his mind distracted, but the thing with Nina was something he needed to wallow in just a little. Camilla understood that she was doing the same with Jerome. Or he assumed she was, that was why she was out the house with Eddie and KT instead of stuck inside watching Jerome and Mara.
"Canis Major,"
"What would Cam's favourite constellation have that's not down here?" Joy asked the boy.
"Answers... maybe." Fabian sighed, "maybe the Goddess Isis has hidden a clue in her protector's star's."
Joy sent Fabian a bemused smile before handing a plate to him with a sandwich, "here, I made you a snack. I noticed you didn't eat much at dinner." She told him softly. "it's banana and peanut butter..."
Fabian looked at the sandwich, "my favourite?"
"not all of us need a Camilla to know what makes you tick," Joy teased causing Fabian to join in with her laughter.
"you know it always makes me feel better looking at the stars," He told the girl with a small smile.
"It puts things into perspective." Joy agreed before glancing down at her hand, at the Anubis Sisterhood symbol, "Right, I've been thinking, and I think its about time..."
"I think it's because it makes me think of how Nina's looking at the same stars." Fabian wistfully interrupted the girl. "no matter where you are in the world, its always the same ones. Same patterns... different angles..."
Joy glanced at the window with a glare slightly, until Fabian let out a gasp of realisation.
"Stars. Stars!"
"What?!"
Fabian looked to Joy with a grin on his face, "that's it! That's the code. That's it!" Fabian dived for his bed and his laptop, "thank you for the brain food." He muttered to the girl as he opened the machine—joy letting out a sigh before leaving the nerdy boy to figure out his brainwave.
