A/N: Started replaying JK:JA on the switch and this idea popped into my head. Simply a rewrite of Jaden and Rosh's battle on Vijunn. Let me know what you think!
Jaden was starting to feel sick. Being on Vijunn left a feeling of disgust all around her, but this was much worse. Worse than all the other cultists she had to fight off. Whatever was behind this door, had to be what she and Kyle were sent to find. She steeled herself, then opened the door. That sickening feeling kept growing with every step. She could see three people and one holding a scepter… the scepter. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't afraid at this moment. When she was close enough, the one holding the scepter spoke.
"I sense your presence Jaden." He slowly turned to show his face. That sick feeling swallowed her whole.
"Rosh! What are you doing here?" She knew the answer, but she hoped she was wrong. He walked up to her, clearly relishing in her confusion. "The disciples of Ragnos brought me. At first I thought they were going to kill me, but I wrong about that."He stared her down before presenting the scepter before her. "Do you realize how much power there is on the dark side? Kyle was holding us back! Can't you feel it? It's unlike anything you've ever imagined."
She closed her eyes and shook her head. No, no, no. Please… "Rosh, what are you saying? This isn't you."
He stared at her like she was speaking another language. "What?"
Jaden pressed on, "You're a Jedi. Just like me." She held out her hand to him. "Let's go home, back to the Academy."
He was frozen in place. Why was he hesitating? What was this pull she had on him? He tightened his grip on the scepter, but his hands were shaking.
Jaden took a step closer, "Rosh… please." Her pleading began to crack his armor. He dropped the scepter and fell to his knees. "No. No, I'm… I'm not…" Jaden was about to run up to him when the two other people stopped her. "Enough talk!" One of them snapped, "Rosh, get up and crush this punny Jedi so we can complete our task." The other seemed to be feeding Force power into Rosh. Reinvigorated, Rosh stood up, lightsaber in hand. "Yes! If you're too weak to join us Jaden, we can't let you stand in our way." She stepped back, hand hovering over her lightsaber. "You don't want to do this, Rosh."
"No, you don't want to do this." He threw his lightsaber at her. Jaden dived out of the way as he went on, "For once, I'm more powerful than you. For once, I can beat you." Jaden activated her saber and held it up as a guard. "Is that what it's come down to? Still a competition?"
"Why don't you fight back and prove me wrong?" He leaped forward to swing down on her. Jaden blocked it however, and kicked him. Rosh only fell back half a step, and pushed off his feet to throw another wild swing at her. Jaden slipped out of the way, grabbing his wrist in a desperate attempt to disarm him. The second she grabbed him, a fog came over the two.
At that moment, they were back at the training grounds at the Academy. Rosh had begun to become more and more frustrated. Jaden, having finished her training for the day approached him. "You doing okay?" She said.
He growled in response.
She crossed her arms. "Oh do tell…"
"You can drop the sarcasm." He said flatly. Jaden shrugged, "What are you trying to do?"
Rosh extended his hand at the target. He stretched his fingers out… to nothing. "Force lightning."
Jaden looked him up and down before humming. "Mind if I help?"
Rosh dropped his head. "Am I that pathetic?"
Jaden held back her annoyance at that comment. "Do you want help or not?"
Rosh slowly turned his head to look at her. Although he wouldn't say it outright, he did want her help. Jaden could see that easily. "Close your eyes and hold out your hands."
He rolled his eyes but obeyed. She began to walk around him. "Now reach out. Do you feel the energy swirling inside you?"
"Yeah…"
"Now guide it to your fingers."
He opened one eye, "I'm sorry. What?"
She put her hand over his open eye. "Focus..." Jaden began to trace a line from the center of his back to his hands. "Follow the path. Guide the energy to your fingers. Then release it…"
She stepped back and watched. At that moment, a spark flew from his right hand. Rosh opened his eyes. "Was that it?"
Jaden nodded. Rosh looked excited. "I did it!"
The two shook off the fog. Rosh glared down at Jaden. They both knew what he was about to do next. Acting quickly, she let go of Rosh and threw an elbow into his face. Rosh's lightning went wide, only managing to get Jaden's hand. She dropped her saber and swore. One of the other disciples poured more Force power into Rosh. "Get away from him!" She ran to him, only for the other disciple to slam her into a wall. She fell onto all fours as Rosh walked up to her. "Bold of you to fight without that saber of yours. After I kill you, I'll tear that stupid thing to pieces." He grabbed her chin so she could face him. The fog came over the two again.
Rosh had returned from his latest mission with Kyle. As he was recounting his mission in his journal, he heard a knock.
He put his datapad away and answered, "Come in."
The door slid open to reveal Jaden. "Hey."
He smiled, "Hey."
Jaden walked in and leaned on a wall, "How was the mission?"
The smile disappeared. "About what you expected."
She squinted at him, "Something wrong?"
Rosh looked away for a moment before facing her again. "You know, I didn't get to hear your answer before."
"My answer to what?"
"Do you think Kyle is holding us back?"
Jaden suddenly went stiff. To be honest, she wasn't sure what her answer was. After a moment, she answered. "I think we're students who don't know enough yet."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean… when you teach a kid or someone new to something, do you show them everything right away or do you take it slow until they're ready for what's next?"
Rosh shrugged, "It depends I guess. Some people pick up a lot faster than others." He seemed to be glaring at her with that last comment.
She shrugged, "So how do you know we're being held back?"
He got up and leaned on the wall next to her. "I don't know, I guess I expected more when I would become a Jedi."
"Like I said, we're still students. Maybe you just have to wait a bit longer."
"I don't think I can wait as long as you."
"Well, it can't hurt to try."
He rolled his eyes, but smiled. The smile faded again when a thought crossed his mind. "Jaden… if you found out Kyke was holding us back, what would you do?"
Jaden sighed, "I don't know. Maybe find out why, see what I can do to change that… if I can."
Silence passed. After a time, Jaden began to head for the door. "Well it's getting late. I better get some sleep. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Yeah… sure."
They were back on Vijunn. Jaden pulled her head from Rosh's grasp then swept his legs. Rosh fell over, giving Jaden a chance to grab her lightsaber from where she dropped it. She turned back to see the disciples dumping more Force power into Rosh. Okay then. She thought, Time to even the odds. Calling on the Force to speed up her movement, Jaden struck down the disciples. Rosh shook his head, like leaving a trance. "Jaden?"
She walked up to him slowly, "Are you okay?" She was a few steps away from him now.
"I… I think I will be…" he thrusted his arm out. The Force poured out of him to chokehold Jaden. He began to laugh. "You're so gullible! Did you really think it'd be that easy?"
"Rosh…" she barely got out. He grinned as he tightened his grip. "Fine…" she coughed. Jaden closed her eyes and focused the Force flowing through her. In that instant, her Force absorb technique was just strong enough to slip out of his grip. Rosh didn't expect her escape so easily. He threw up his saber as it collided with her's. Their lightsabers locked, allowing them to see each other up close. Jaden could see Rosh's eyes turning from that familiar brown she knew, to a menacing yellow. This wasn't her friend anymore… and that stung.
Rosh took advantage of her distraction to push Jaden to the floor. He leaped forward to stab her, only for Jaden to kick him back with both feet. The two got to their feet and continued colliding with one another. With every swing however, Jaden's anger was rising. It didn't take long for Rosh to notice that she was beginning to overpower him. She was swirling in an ocean of anger, betrayal and confusion. It fueled her every swing, pushing Rosh back. When he was open, Jaden slammed the ball of her foot into his chest. Rosh fell onto his back, losing his grip on his lightsaber. She was staring down on him as he began to back away. Now Rosh was the one afraid. Was he really about to die as a failure? And by the hands of his former friend?
Before those questions could be answered, Kyle burst through the door. Jaden's anger dissipated. Rosh was at a loss for words… this was not how he expected things to go.
Then he saw her…
There was an eruption of Force lightning that struck Kyle and Jaden. Their screams rang throughout the room. Rosh could see the scepter rise off the ground and into his new master's hand. "Did you really think I'd let you take my new apprentice?"
Kyle was the first to stand. "Tavion!" He hissed.
"You should have killed me when you had the chance, Katarn." Tavion mused, "Your pathetic Jedi mercy is a weakness that shall cost you your life!" She looked down at Jaden still crumpled on the ground trying to get up. "And the life of your Academy's student." She said giving Jaden a slight kick, making the student groan. She looked up at her new apprentice. "But not you, my dear Rosh. Come." Spellbound, Rosh stood up and began to walk to her. "Rosh… no…" Jaden struggled to get out. He didn't even look at her. Tavion laughed, "Foolish child. Your petty friendship cannot stand to the power of the dark side!" Jaden clenched her fists as she struggled to get on all fours. Kyle brushed himself off, "So is this what it's come to Tavion? Stealing scraps of the Force like some intergalactic parasite."
"Spare me your self-righteous pitty Katarn! You may have shamed me when you spared my life, but that was before I found this! Now I have a new master. One that has promised me the galaxy. "
Kyle shook his head, "Ragnos? What could a dead Sith Lord give you?"
"All I could ever want and more… not that you'll be around to see." Tavion saw Jaden getting closer to standing up. Using the Force, she turned on Jaden's blade and used it to collapse the ceiling. Acting quickly, Tavion and Rosh escaped, leaving Kyle and Jaden to face the falling roof.
Right when Jaden thought they would be crushed, Kyle used the Force to hold up most of the rocks. "I can't keep this up for long…" he grunted. Realizing the situation, Jaden grabbed Kyle's lightsaber. "Hold on!" She cut a large hole in the floor for them to escape. Within seconds they were free.
