Short note: I won't be having an editor for this, and possibly the next few chapters due to him being busy. Hopefully, the chapters will still be half decent.

"Those two are quite interesting, to say the least." Sip remarked.

"I just hope they don't pull off another Team Rocket. We had enough trouble with those villain teams already." I sighed.

"Based on their horrible communication system, I think they still have a long way to go." Sip chuckled.

"I hope so."

After walking through the route for a while and encountering two strange men who were debating on whether Mega Kick or Mega Punch is better, buildings caught my sight and I knew that we arrived in the next city, Cerulean.

Cerulean City

"The Floral Lagoon City"

"Let's check out the gym and schedule a battle as soon as possible, Lows." Sip suggested. I nodded, more willing to battle this time after regaining some passion for battling.

Shortly, we found ourselves in front of the gym with Water type Pokémon designs along the walls. We entered the gym lobby and there were cabinets showcasing multiple trophies of swimming and water ballet events. However, there was no receptionist working there at the moment, and no sight of the Gym Leader was seen around the area.

"Huh, maybe the Gym Leader went out somewhere?" Sip questioned.

"Perhaps. We can return here after booking a room for stay in the PokéCentre." I suggested. Sip agreed with my suggestion as we walked out of the gym and entered the PokéCentre to heal our Pokémon and book a room. As we finished the booking and was about to enter the room to relax, my Pokégear started ringing. Signaling Sip to enter the room first, I answered the call.

A familiar voice appeared from the Pokégear, [Lows, it's been a while!]

"Oh, Prof. Oak!" I greeted, surprised to receive a call from him.

[How are you doing? I heard that you've recently returned as a trainer again.]

"Ah... yeah. I'm currently travelling around the region with my friend from Lavaridge Town, Sip. You probably know him."

[Of course! He battled alongside you, and even went far in the few leagues he participated in. I'm glad to see you two battling again after such a long time!]

"Thanks, Prof. Oak. How are you doing?"

[Ah, just doing more research as usual. A Professor's work is never done!] He replied, [When the news of you and Sip returning for the Indigo League came out, some of my colleagues talked about you two.]

"W-Wow." I scratched the back of my head, feeling slightly awkward about me receiving some attention, "People still remember us from years ago?"

[Of course! Talents of trainers never go forgotten. You two did make it quite far into the battle scene, after all. Some people anticipated you two to battle again during the years you two were inactive.]

"That's cool, I guess."

[Ah, how time flies!] He chirped, [I still remembered back then, I stuffed everything in a duffle bag for you, Disc and Cassie because I had some meeting to attend in Sinnoh. But you three handled it just fine and look at where you all are at now! Disc being the Champion of the region, Cassie being a world-class Coordinator and you returning to participate in the Indigo League. You three are still chasing your dreams, and it's so joyful being one of the people to help you three with that!]

"Yeah, we definitely owed you a lot back then." I slightly smiled, remembering the moment we were excited to have our first Pokémon and travel around Hoenn.

[Anyways, enough about the past. How many badges have you obtained? Where are you at right now?]

"I'm taking this slow, Prof. Oak. I recently just obtained the Boulder Badge, and I just arrived at Cerulean City." I replied.

[Cerulean City?] Something seemed to have dawned on the Kanto region's Professor, [Ah, I just remembered! Lows, can I ask you for a favor?]

"Sure, Prof. Oak. What's up?" I asked.

[There's a colleague of mine who lives in the Cerulean Cape named Bill. However, I haven't heard from him for quite a while now. And based on past experiences... he could possibly be in some trouble again. Mind heading to his house and checking on Bill for me?] He asked.

Knowing that my schedule wasn't as tight, I accepted the job, "I don't mind. I'll update you once I've done so, Prof. Oak."

[Great! Thank you so much for your help.]

After ending the call with Prof. Oak, I messaged Sip about the situation and that I would be at the room later. Then, I went out of the PokéCentre, and started walking towards my destination.

After travelling through Nugget Bridge, which was famous for Team Rocket using this location to offer talented trainers to join Team Rocket (and usually failing) during their active days, I walked along the route and arrived at Cerulean Cape. I saw a house with a big pond in front.

Hmm, I guess this is Bill's house then. I thought as I walked closer towards the house.

A Magikarp desperately tackled the door non-stop. The door slightly barged from the impact of its attacks, but was nowhere from being opened.

The Magikarp panted, what was the point of me doing this anyway?!

The Magikarp then calmed down, remembering his point of doing so, I gotta barge this door open and call for help before I remain as a Magikarp forever! I've been in much bigger trouble compared to this. No point giving up now!

After regaining some energy, he continued launching himself towards the door, hoping the door would finally be opened when there was enough impact.

Suddenly, he stopped as he heard footsteps coming closer to the area. Then, hope was reignited when the Magikarp heard knocking on the door.

Is this finally my chance to get saved? I have to barge this door open before that person leaves!

He readied himself for a full power Tackle attack, and launched himself forward...

Here I was, in front of Bill's house. I knocked on the door with no reply. Getting worried, I tried opening the door, thinking that it would be locked...

To my surprise, the door knob turned easily, "Wait, this door is unlocked?"

Saying that, I pulled the door wide open. The next scene however, surprised me much further.

A Magikarp launched itself from inside the house and went right past me, gliding in the air for a moment. Then, it went right over the fence and landed in the water.

Seeing me still being amused, the Magikarp yelled, "Trainer, you gotta help me out here!"

That wasn't a translation from the Pokétalk... "Are you Bill?" I asked, unsure about my hunch.

"Oh wow, this trainer knows who I am without even needing to explain it!" The Magikarp, or should I say Bill, talked to himself before returning to talking with me, "Now then, when I get out of here, you'll have to get me out of this Magikarp form-"

A Tentacruel suddenly popped out of the water and grabbed the Magikarp. It was probably looking for a good afternoon snack.

"Help me!" Bill screamed, his vulnerable Magikarp body getting tangled in the tentacles of the Water and Poison type as he got pulled closer to its mouth.

"W-Wait, what is a Tentacruel doing in a pond like this?!"

"You think I'd know?! Please, save me before I get eaten by this Tentacruel!"

I found a way into the pond beside the fence. However, I hesitated, remembering about a fact: I was scared of water.

I shook my head; at that point, saving someone was more important than my phobia. I took out a Pokéball and sent out Surfer in the pond, "Surfer, give me a ride!"

Surfer nodded as I jumped onto his shell. My Water type then swam towards the Tentacruel, reverting its attention from Bill. Surfer warned, "Hold on tight, Lows!"

I nodded, as his tail glowed light blue and started spinning around. forming a spiral of water spiralling around it. Surfer then attacked the Tentacruel with the Aqua Tail attack. The impact freed Bill from Tentacruel's tentacles, as he hurriedly swam out of the pond and launched himself onto land again.

However, the Tentacruel obviously would not let us go after we interrupted his afternoon snack time. It released violet acid from its mouth towards our direction, forcing Surfer to dodge them before the attack landed on me. I was starting to lose balance as Surfer tried to get it away with an Ice Beam attack.

Tentacruel still was not giving up. It raised its tentacles into the air and got a flaming blue aura. Then, Tentacruel hit Surfer with invisible waves of energy and a loud sound filled my starter's ears. Dizziness filled Surfer as he started losing his sense of direction.

I struggled to keep balance as I said, "Surfer, snap out of it!"

Surfer tried to use another attack, but he couldn't withstand the dizziness as he kept wobbling on the surface of the water. Finally, I completely lost balance and fell into the water.

I struggled to breathe as I moved my hands vigorously around the water in fear, desperate to grab something that could help me float but to no avail. Slowly, the movements stopped as my vision started to become blurry.

H-Help...

Help suddenly just arrived like I asked for in my head. I felt like I was floating again as I rose towards the surface of the water. I gasped for breaths and looked downwards, realizing I was right above a starfish-like Pokémon as it carried me back to land. At the same time, Surfer finally regained consciousness as he continued battling the Tentacruel.

I finally got up and saw Starmie along with a woman with blue eyes and honey-orange short hair, wearing a blue and white one-piece swimsuit and a light blue jacket looking at me, concerned.

"Oh, thank goodness you're alright!" She sighed in relief.

"A-Ah, thank you for saving me." I quickly said, slightly embarrassed.

"No problem. What brings you here in the pond, though? This isn't really a place for swimming-" She then looked towards the pond and saw my Blastoise just finished defeating the Tentacruel, "Oh, nevermind what I just asked."

Surfer hurriedly swam back to land and apologized, "I'm so sorry, Lows!"

I patted him, "I know you didn't mean to, Surfer."

"The pond isn't even that deep though. You could probably swim back up just fine. Do you not know how to swim?" She asked.

"W-Well, I do, actually. It's just..." I decided to keep the answer short, "Aquaphobia."

She nodded understandingly, accepting the answer. She then looked towards Bill and curiously asked, "Wow, today is strange. A Tentacruel in the pond and a Magikarp not in where it should be. Let me move it back to the water-"

"Please, dear Arceus, don't ever bring me back to that pond ever again!" Bill yelled, "How, when, and why is a Tentacruel doing in my pond?! Those darn Tentacool families must have bred for months for this big boy to appear here!"

"...I guess you had another experiment gone wrong again, hadn't you, Bill?" The trainer grinned, "Let's get you back to your own body."

Bill and Magikarp came out of the machine at Bill's home, back in their respective bodies. Bill sighed in relief, "It felt like forever since I was in my body again. Being a Magikarp is not fun, I tell you."

After apologizing to Magikarp and returning it back to the fish tank in his house, he thanked us, "Thank you all so much! If it wasn't for you two, I would've been in that Tentacruel's stomach by now."

"I'm glad you're okay now, Bill. Just be more careful next time during your experiments." The trainer laughed.

"I've always been careful! It's been quite a while since this kind of thing happened to me." Bill groaned.

"No problem. If anything, thank Prof. Oak. He asked me to come over." I said.

"Yeah... Without him, I'd probably still be stuck at home in my Magikarp body! Everything is so much harder to do when you're a Magikarp." He said, "I'll shoot him a message later to tell him I'm fine now."

Just wanting to take a rest after the incident, I bid farewell to Bill and left Cerulean Cape. There was a shortcut to get back to Cerulean, so I started walking along the path, my mind still thinking about what happened earlier.

However, my thoughts were interrupted by the footsteps behind me. I looked back and saw the female trainer doing the same as me. She caught up to me, and there was a brief silence before she said, "I swear I've seen you before."

"Hm?" I said, confused about her statement. I did not recall meeting this trainer ever in my journey.

"Nevermind then." She ended as we finally returned to Cerulean City. I thanked her once again for her help before heading towards the PokéCentre.

I went back to my room, and lied down on my bed, falling asleep immediately.

I needed a good rest.

After I was fully rested, Sip and I exited our room and went to the Cerulean Gym again in another attempt to schedule for a gym battle.

I opened the door and entered the lobby again. However, there was someone in the lobby, her back facing towards us. Sip asked, "Are you the Cerulean Gym Leader?"

She turned to us and said, "Hello! If you're looking for the Cerulean Gym Leader, that would be me. I am the Water type specialist, Misty."

W-Wait, she's the Gym Leader for Cerulean City?! I thought as I stared at the same trainer who saved me in Cerulean Cape, speechless. She noticed me as well and smiled, "Glad to see you around too, trainer. I assume you two wanted to register for your gym battles?"

We nodded and Misty started arranging the battle time for us two, which was ten in the morning in two days. Satisfied with the times given, we were about to leave but Misty stopped us, "Lows, mind if we talk for a bit?"

I slightly hesitated as I was awkward with conversations, but agreed anyway. Sip said, "I'll be starting my training then. I'll see you later, then!"

I nodded as Sip left the Cerulean Gym. Misty then walked closer to me and said, "I remembered the time when I saw you now. You were the trainer from Pallet Town who participated in the Ever Grande League and Silver League, right?"

Slightly shocked she knew about it, I nodded. She continued, "I've been checking on strong trainers during my free time. You seemed to quiet down from the trainer scene after the Silver League, though."

"Well... It's a long story." I replied.

"Glad to see you coming back, though! I'll be anticipating the battles against you and Sip. Both of you seem to be pretty skillful." She added, "If I'm not mistaken, you have a sister who used to be a Gym Leader, right?"

"Ah, yeah. Her name is Charmaine. She recently resigned as a gym leader, though."

"I knew it! Back then, when the new Gym Leaders in Hoenn were announced, it was pretty hot news. I hope she's doing well."

"She is. She's currently battling at the Battle Tree in Alola with Wally. They return here once in a while though."

"That's great. Charmaine seems like a cool person, we met once or twice during her Gym Leader days, but we never got the chance to talk. I probably wouldn't dare to approach her, anyway." She sighed.

"Why is that?"

"She seemed like someone who is completely different to me. She uses Grass type Pokémon while I use Water types. It doesn't help that she has hobbies like gardening and jungle trekking. My hobbies are more based on water activities. It seemed like we had nothing in common to even talk about."

"You'll be surprised. Her personality is a lot more different than you think. You two can probably get along well." I grinned.

"Hmm... maybe you're right. When she comes back to Kanto, I'll maybe take the initiative to contact her."

"I'm sure she'd like it." I laughed lightly.

As we were nearing the end of our conversation, someone suddenly opened the gym door and entered, "I'm here, Misty!"

The Gym Leader looked at the person behind me and replied, "Ah, glad to see you make it, Lisa!"

I looked back immediately upon hearing the familiar name, seeing Lisa holding a swimsuit in front of me. Lisa was slightly surprised but also happy to see me as she beamed, "Lows! How's the Indigo League going?"

"I-It's going fine, Lisa." I tried to recover, "What are you doing here?"

"Oh, I'm just here for the swimming session with Misty today!" She chirped.

"Lisa and I are pretty close friends. We go out swimming around the waters in Cerulean quite often. She wanted to get fit, she said, but she's already slimmer than I'll ever be!" Misty jokingly groaned.

"Like I said, those aren't fats in your body, they're muscles!" Lisa tried cheering up Misty as she nudged her.

"You're just sweet as always, Lisa." Misty chuckled.

"I'll be on my way then," I said, not wanting to delay their time together, "Have fun swimming, you two-"

"Wait! I don't mind if you join us, Lows. What do you say?" Lisa said.

"I appreciate the invite, Lisa." I smiled, "But I don't think I like swimming too much, so I'll pass."

"Besides, he has Aqua-" Misty stopped as Lisa exchanged expressions with her while giving the Water type specialist a nod.

Lisa was oddly persistent in convincing me to join them, "That's fine, Lows. How about you just come and watch us? Sip can join us too. He seems like someone who loves sports activities."

That fact was actually quite true. Sip is a sports lover, and I was almost certain he would immediately accept the invite. I looked towards Misty, asking for her permission, "Are you okay with us joining you two's swimming session?"

"Eh, I don't mind." Misty shrugged, "It's always nice to make new friends. Besides, Lisa can be kinda boring sometimes when she doesn't bring up interesting conversation topics."

"H-Hey, that's not true!" Lisa playfully hit Misty, resulting in the Gym Leader to give another light chuckle.

"I'll ask him, then." I said as I took out my Pokégear and contacted Sip, who was more than willing to choose swimming over training any time of the day. After that was settled, we met up with him and borrowed him a male swimsuit to change.

"Let's walk to the swimming room, then." Misty showed us the way and opened a door that led to a room with a private pool along with a few sun lounges for people to sit and watch. The pool was quite deep, which I assumed it was to provide a big area for Misty to practice her water ballet or swimming.

As we all entered the room, she closed the door and offered, "Enjoy yourselves, everyone!"

"Cannonball!" My energetic travelling partner was excited to do some swimming as he dived into the pool immediately. Misty and Lisa took their time to slowly get into the water, getting used to its temperature before going for a swim. I got myself a sun lounge to sit on and watched them starting their session.

As the two girls started swimming, I started wandering around my thoughts, thinking about the incident that caused me to develop this phobia.

Long story short, there was a troublesome villain team that I had to deal with back when I started my adventure in the Hoenn region. Without anyone accompanying, I tried stopping the Leader from causing the world's destruction. That attempt didn't go as well, apparently, as I was defeated and got thrown into the deep ocean. I would have probably drowned there if it wasn't for Surfer evolving into a Blastoise and saving me. I still owed him till this day.

However, that got me extremely afraid to enter large bodies of water. I used to love taking baths, but I couldn't even dare to get my body half soaked in the bathtub after the incident. The moment I engulfed myself around water, the incident I longed to forget will always return to my head, causing a panic attack from me. I never really intended to face my phobia, instead I switched to showers instead of baths, and avoided myself from any place with water.

I guess today is just not the case.

I almost shivered when I thought about the moment I fell into the pond. Fear overtook me quicker than I thought that I couldn't even react properly to rescue myself.

I looked at the three swimming happily. I knew I was the one who suggested watching them during their session, but I still felt a little left out. To be honest, I wished I could be in the pool with them and have a fun time together.

Maybe, just maybe, one day I could be back in the water again.

"Lows, you're spacing off again!"

Lisa's voice made me return from my thoughts. I realized Lisa was close to me in the pool, staring at me with a smile on her face, "There you go. Thinking about stuff again?"

"...Yeah." I nodded.

"Indulging yourself in memories is good sometimes, but don't sink in too much before drowning in them. We gotta move forward too!" Lisa smiled, "I bet you have at least some intention to enter the pool and join the swimming action, Lows."

"H-How did you know?" I was surprised.

"Why, I wonder? Well... truth be told, I can actually read minds." I actually believed what she said for a moment due to myself actually having this seldomly used ability.

However, I knew that was just a joke when she laughed heartily, "Of course not, Lows! I just have good intuition, that's all."

"O-Oh," I then admitted, "It does get a little boring and lonely just watching you three swimming. But my aquaphobia is on the way for me to even take a step in the water."

"You never know unless you properly tackle your phobia!" Lisa encouraged, "Wanna give it a try?"

My hesitation slightly faded as she continued, "A small spoiler about Misty's battlefield room, it is basically a huge pool but for battling. If you get over your phobia today, it will definitely help you with your performance in the gym battle! Besides, you can also save yourself, in case you somehow fall into the pool."

Finally, I gave in, "...Sure, Lisa."

"That's the spirit!" She cheered and pointed towards my left, "There's a male swimsuit there for you to change. I'll do my best to help you overcome your aquaphobia."

"You're too nice, Lisa." I slightly smiled at her enthusiasm and grabbed the swimsuit to change. As I walked my way towards the changing room, a thought suddenly struck me.

Wait, how was there already a swimsuit prepared for me?

I returned to the pool with a full body swimsuit on me. Lisa gestured me to come over to the side of the pool. After I did so, she nodded and looked at me as I sat at the side and started soaking my feet in the water.

The water felt warmer than I thought, as I enjoyed the feeling. However, I knew that to overcome my phobia, I needed to do more than that.

Here I go... I slowly let myself into the pool, my hands still holding on to the side. Half of my body was now in the water. My mind started to go blank, but I tried convincing myself to not panic.

As I tried to sink further down into the pool, without me realizing, my body went numb, the results of aquaphobia setting in. My hands slowly got themselves off the side, and just like that, my entire body was in the water.

Instead of floating, my body slowly sunk downwards in the water. My body felt too numb to even react, even when I tried forcing it to move around and do something before I started drowning.

Come on... start moving!

However, it was no use as I sunk further down. I stopped convincing myself with lies and became scared of my current situation. Tears started to form in my eyes, as I was reminded of the incident again as if it was happening again right in front of my eyes-

"Lows!" A force suddenly pushed me back up to the surface of water. I gasped for breath the moment that happened, as my senses started to come back. I stared at Lisa, who used her arms to hold my shoulders and lift me back up. Her eyes showed a hint of worry as she continued holding me tightly.

"L-Lisa..." I tried saying something.

"It's alright. I know you couldn't control your body. The phobia just strikes you unnoticed, didn't it?" Lisa reassured me.

"I-It's just so hard to get over this." I said, struggling to contain the tears formed during my panic attack.

"Hey, it's okay." She tried comforting me, "There's no way you can immediately overcome this phobia that surrounded you for years. But you can't run away forever, right? What if... something happens to you that involves water and you couldn't save yourself?"

She then further encouraged me, "You can do this. You had faced your fears before, hadn't you? Take your fear of bugs as an example. You participating in the Bug Catching Contest back then helped a lot with your fear."

"I-It was just a coincidence though. I thought it was just a Pokémon Catching Contest when I registered for it."

"But you didn't back off after knowing the truth, right?" She replied, "And that's what I admired about you. Back then, you wouldn't back off even when you were forced to face some tough obstacle or challenge. You inspired me to become braver as a Coordinator when I was travelling with you."

She continued holding me as she continued, "I know that part of you is still there, Lows. You willing to make your first step proved it. I believe in you."

I understood what she was talking about. The times when I was travelling with her in the Johto region, she looked up to me like a role model. I was trying my best to help her gain her confidence, and have done things I usually wouldn't do. While she gained her courage and confidence, I seemed to have grown more than just a little myself too.

However, after what happened when I came home, it seemed like that courageous part of mine was gone for years. I've avoided all events that might make me think about my weaknesses and regrets, my father's passing being one of them. It felt like I was acting like a coward.

I have to do this. For my friends, for Lisa, for myself.

I gave Lisa a nod, my eyes filled with determination. She beamed, "Alright, I'm going to slowly let go of you, alright? It's okay, you're gonna be safe. I'll be here with you this time."

I closed my eyes, as I felt the pressure applied on my shoulders slowly go away. I felt myself slightly sinking in, but I kept on thinking, The water is nothing to be afraid of...

I tried moving my legs, and they functioned properly, unlike what happened when I first entered the water. I quickly moved my legs back and forth, giving me an upward force and made me stay afloat again.

I was delighted. Although I was still struggling to stay afloat, it was much better than just sinking without your body functioning. My mind slightly panicked, but I managed to fight through it this time.

I looked at Lisa, who had the same reaction, "Y-You did it, Lows..."

"Y-Yeah, I did it." I replied, unable to believe it myself.

"I'm so happy for you!" She gave me a big smile, giving me a warm feeling inside. It made me want to try harder for her.

Lisa spent the rest of the session watching me as I practiced staying afloat for a longer time, which I managed to do so in the end without any major panic attack. To others, this did not seem like much progress to others, but for me, it was more than enough. I made more progress than I possibly could in the past seven years.

It was more than enough.

I did feel kind of bad that Lisa had to spend time on me instead of her own friend, but seeing Misty occupied with having conversations with my sports addict friend, I felt slightly relieved that she was not exactly feeling bored.

"At least you're able to survive when you fall into the pool during the gym battle." Lisa heaved a sigh of relief looking at my progress."

"I probably can now." I slightly chuckled, "I owe you for this, Lisa. Thank you so much."

"D-Don't say that... you were the one who made your first step, after all. I just used some words to encourage you to make that decision." She appeared slightly flustered.

"You did more than you thought, Lisa. Give yourself some credit." I gave her a small grin.

As she was about to reply, Misty's voice was heard from a distance, "I think we had some good exercise today. Let's end for today before it gets too late."

"Lows, wanna get dinner after we take a shower and change?" Sip suggested.

"Sure thing, Lows." I turned towards him and accepted the suggestion.

"I'm getting quite hungry as well." Lisa said, "Should we get some food too, Misty?"

"Good idea! A good treat is always the best award for exercising well." Misty chirped, then realization dawned on her as she groaned, "...and this is why I never get slimmer."

"Misty, I told you, those are not fats in your body, they're muscles!" Lisa chuckled.

"Whatever, let's do it." Misty then asked, "How about we have dinner together with the boys? It's a pain to take minutes choosing the food to eat."

"A-Ah! Would the boys be okay with it?" Lisa asked.

"I don't mind!" Sip answered.

"It'd be nice." I smiled.

"Alright then, let's change and get a treat together." Misty concluded, and after cleaning ourselves and changing back to our usual outfits, we went ahead and had a delicious meal together at one of the restaurants located in Cerulean.

I wrote down what happened during this memorable day in my diary after heading back to the room.

...and that was how I managed to go through my aquaphobia. Just a little bit, but it's a good start.

I then continued, It felt like no good thing was gonna happen to me again for the past few years. But returning for a journey that I didn't even initially wanted proved to be much more helpful than I thought.

With the help of my friends, I was able to find some pieces of the lost part of myself. Sip, Lisa, and the people I met throughout this journey so far... They made me see the light of hope again. It's not as bright right now, but maybe someday, I can be proud to say that the light of hope is completely visible to me once again.

Perhaps...

This journey is the key for me to become happy again.

Hey, Lows... You don't have to thank me for today.

I'm just happy I was able to help you... just like how you did seven years ago.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
