"Her pulse is dropping!"
"I need a C- collar!"
"Clear!"
Medics were shouting, sirens were blaring. The team watched helplessly as Serena was rolled onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
"I'm going to ride with them." Rossi offered, and stepped in the back of the white vehicle. His face was illuminated by the red and blue lights of the sirens. Reid rushed to do the same, but Morgan held him back.
"I know how much you want to, kid, but we need your glorious brains here."
"...right." The doctor sighed and returned to the team.
"She's going to be in surgery for a couple hours. We can use that time wisely. Now we know Lady X, Merissa, is working with Adam Gomez. First, victimology. Why'd they pick Chen?" Hotch said.
"She was a previous victim. She probably escaped, that wasn't fun for Merissa. She's a perfectionist. She needs everything done right." Prentiss replied.
"Right. And she's failed again." JJ looked as the ambulances drove out and sped down the road. The whole team looked at her. They were all dreading the hard possibility that Serena might not make it, that Merissa might have succeeded. JJ's eyes widened in terror. "No! No, she has to make it! She's strong, she-"
"Yeah, she is." Morgan countered, taking JJ's side. "She'll make it, I'm sure she will." He gave everyone a glare. Now was not the time to wonder if their friend would die or not.
"Merissa's meticulouis, and organized. She's going to have a plan. Gomez is just her puppy dog. Submissive partner dominant partner, it's textbook behavior." Prentiss said.
"Our best chance is to catch Gomez. I'll call Garcia, see if she's got anything on him yet." Morgan offered, and went to call their technical analyst.
The team went back to their SUVs. The drive back to the station was tense and silent. The worry for Serena was like a fog, and it weighed down on them.
Hospital
Rossi had been sitting in the same spot for a few hours. His hands were folded, and he stared at the ground. How could he let this happen? The team was full of profilers for god's sake, they knew Serena was acting suspicious.
"You okay?"
Rossi looked up. A woman with shoulder length brown hair was looking at him with a worried expression on her face. She wore a plain black dress with sneakers.
"Huh? Oh. Yeah, I'm just worried about my friend. She's in surgery." He responded.
"Oh my goodness! Well, I sure hope she gets better." The woman said, patting Rossi on the shoulder. He noticed a tattoo on her arm, but she moved too quickly. Soon, she was walking down the hall. That's when he saw it. A heart, with an X in the middle.
"STOP!" He roared, drawing his gun. The people around him all gasped and ducked down.
"Sir, please put that gun down!" A doctor yelled.
"I'm FBI. I order you to stop!" Rossi said, aiming his gun at the black dressed-woman. She stopped, but didn't turn to face him. "Get down on your knees, and put your hands on your head!" Rossi demanded. She didn't do that.
"Merissa told me she had some rather...overprotective friends." She said coldly. She reached into her purse and pulled out two guns, and started shooting.
Screams and shouts filled the hospital lobby. The woman laughed. Suddenly, two civilians withdrew from the crowd. They had tattoos as well, on their necks. It was a knife, with an X drawn in the middle. Soon they were tying up everyone to the columns at the corners of the lobby. Leaving Rossi facing 3 armed criminals. He sighed, and laid down his weapon. They tied his hands together, and forced him onto a chair, facing everyone else. He had failed them.
A doctor walked out into the lobby, still in surgery clothing. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The lobby was a wreck.
"Go on, scaredy cat. What do you have to say?" The woman asked.
"I-I was about to-to say that uh- Serena-"
Rossi gave him a "Stop talking now!" look, but it was too late. Her name had been said.
"Serena what?" The woman asked again. The doctor didn't answer.
"I-she-"
"BANG!" A shot rang from one of the guy's guns. The doctor quiverred. He gave Rossi an apologetic look.
"S-Serena Chen i-is out of surgery, she-" Before he could finish, the woman spoke into her earpiece.
"You're free to go in, Merissa."
Rossi's heart dropped.
NYPD Station
"Hey, you'd think Serena would be done with surgery by now." JJ said, looking at her watch.
"Well, you can't really tell how long it takes." Morgan reasoned.
"Actually, you can. Based on the severity of her wounds, and taken into account the slight possibility for mistake the surgeons make you can estimate-"
"Reid, we don't need that right now." Morgan replied. The doctor looked at the ground.
"Sorry."
"Still, Rossi should have given us a call by now." JJ continued.
"You're right." Hotch said, still looking at all the case files. The team heard a buzz of activity in the main room. The officers were heading out.
"What's goin' on?" Morgan asked, peeking his head out of the conference room.
"There's a shooting at some hospital." The detective responded. "I think it's Berkley Hospital. I know we're on a case, but the chief and some others will-"
"Hotch, that's the hospital Serena's staying at!" Prentiss yelled.
They all rushed to the door, leaving Kylee and Alayla alone in the room.
"Oh, don't worry about us. We don't need anything." Kylee said in a monotone voice, arms crossed. Alayla however, sprang up and started pacing.
"KY KY WHAT IF SERENA GETS KILLED?!" She burst into tears. Kylee patted her on the back.
"Don't worry. She won't, I promise."
"S-she won't?" Alayla asked between sniffles.
"I promise. She won't."
Hospital
"U-ugh." Serena groggily opened her eyes. She was on a white hospital bed, connected to many tubes. A woman stood in the doorway.
"Nice to see you again, sugar." She said.
"Y-you!" Serena choked, focusing on the figure. It was Merissa.
"You are a survivor, aren't you?" Merissa asked, advancing towards Serena. "You were always the strongest. Of all of them."
"Get away!" Serena yelled, frantically searching for her gun.
"You know, I killed six girls because of you. Six. And I never had fun with them before." Merissa replied, sitting near the bed. "But that doesn't matter. You've escaped me for more than 10 years. What a feat. An accomplishment, if I do say so myself. But, that doesn't matter anymore. Because I'm going to end you. Just as I planned."
"No, you won't." A voice came from the doorway. Serena breathed a sigh of relief. It was Reid, pointing his revolver at Merissa.
You could tell he had run all the way down the hall. His hair was a mess, and his tie was almost undone. "You're not going to hurt her. Lower the weapon." He ordered, nodding to the gun tucked in the back of Merissa's pants. Merissa just smiled, and said,
"He's handsome, sugar. You did well. Don't worry, I'll come back."
She threw a smoke bomb, leaving Reid and Serena coughing.
"Go after her!" Serena yelled, and she heard his footsteps as he ran in pursuit.
After a few minutes, he came back. His tie was completely undone at this point, and he was sweating. The smoke had cleared.
"I-I lost her…" He said, panting. He gave Serena a look, and holstered his gun. The two hugged, both just thinking of what had just happened. After what seemed like forever, the rest of the team joined them by the doorway.
"Where's Lady X?" JJ asked. Reid pulled away and turned to give the team a sad look.
"She got away. I tried to run after her, but I-I lost her." He slumped his shoulders in defeat.
"It's alright, Pretty Boy. What matters is that Serena's safe." Morgan said. The young doctor nodded.
"Thank you." Serena said, looking at the team. They helped her get up, and they walked out.
