Hey, so how did you guys like the last chapter? I loved writing all the cute shipping moments. Well, I hope I've filled y'alls hunger for shipping, cause now I get to bring some action in. Also, why isn't there an Action story category? Closest thing I can find is Adventure. Well enough with my mini rant & small talk. I wanna get to writing!
The ride was quiet. Nobody was saying anything. The only noise was the radio, playing some song about taking a horse to a hotel room & riding it. I don't want to know what kind of riding he's gonna do to that poor horse.
"Can you turn the radio off please?" I heard Dawn say, suprising me a bit.
"Yeah, sorry," Kenny said, reaching over & turning the radio off, leaving the car is a tense silence.
I felt Dawn shuffle next to me. I looked over, seeing her staring at me, her eyes seemingly searching for a sign of reassurance. I smiled gently, reaching over & putting my arm around her, pulling her into my side & holding her. I felt her bury her face in my side, making me smile as I reached up, running my fingers through her hair.
I looked forward, staring out the front windshield. We had already been driving for a good 20 minutes. We had probably another 10 before we reached the west side of the city. We stayed silent for the rest of the ride, Dawn curled up against my side. Well, I don't think that us not wearing seatbelts will matter if we get caught.
We eventually neared the edge of the city, driving down the road only to see a police checkpoint.
"Shit," I heard Kenny mumble as he turned on his blinker. He turned down a side road, pulling out of sight of the police, then stopping the car. "Alright, we're here."
"Alright," I said, looking at him. I reached over, opening the door & hopping out. Dawn climbed out behind me as I stepped beside his window. He rolled it down & looked at me. "Thank you Kenny, for everything. We owe you. I owe you."
"Well," he smirked & glanced at Dawn, "You can pay me back by keeping her safe."
"Definitely," I smiled & nodded. "And I'll send you a postcard from wherever we end up."
"I'll be waiting."
I smiled, stepping away from the window. Dawn walked up, standing next to Kenny, starting to quietly talk. Probably saying her goodbyes. I turned, walking the short distance to the edge of the building, peering around it at the checkpoint.
It was a simple set up, 2 cruisers blocking either side of the road, & one pointing towards the road, ready to leave at a moments notice. I looked at the officers standing there, there were 4. The men, average build & height. And one female, the officer from the station, leading them. What was her name? Officer Jennifer or something? Whatever, doesn't matter.
It was then that I heard quiet footsteps coming up next to me. I looked back to see Dawn slowly coming up next to me as Kenny's car drove off. Dawn had an embarrased look on her face with a small blush as she stepped next to me.
"Whats wrong Dawn?" I asked, only to get a head shake in response. She stepped next to me, looking around the building at the checkpoint.
I shrugged, he probably made some embarrassing joke or something. If it was important she'd tell me. I looked on either side of the checkpoint. On the left, was a bit of a clearing with the occasional tree. On the right was a group of trees, slowly turning into a forest. That was the safer option.
"So Dawn, I'm thinking we go right. We give the checkpoint a wide gap & go into the trees. Sneaking around it doesn't look like it'll be too hard," I said, stepping back.
"Alright, but what if they have people over there?"
"I don't think so. It looks like they're only blocking the roads," I said, stretching a little. I looked behind us, watching Kenny's tail lights disappear into the distance. There weren't very many buildings on this street, so we could easily slip down an alley & run to the forest. "Ready Dawn?"
"Yeah, I think," she said, looking down slightly. I felt her reach over & grab my hand gently. I smiled reassuringly, holding her hand gently.
"Then lets go Dawn," I started down the street, holding her hand & leading her.
As we neared the end of the alley, I peeked out for a second looking at the checkpoint. Nothing had changed. I glaced down the road, only to see a police Tahoe driving down with his lights on, but no sirens. It had a spotlight turned on & aimed at the forest as he slowly drove towards the checkpoint. We're gonna have to wait until he passes. I stepped back away from the corner, looking around. The alleyway was littered with random trash bags cardboard boxes, 2 metal trashcans, and a dumpster.
I reached & grabbed Dawn's hand, pulling her back. We walked over, moving behind the edge of the dumpster & waiting. It wasn't long, before I heard the crunch of lose rocks beneath the SUV as it drove by slowly. I took the opportunity & peaked up at it, looking at it drove by. Jubilife Police Department... K9 Unit... No, please don't tell me... I let go of Dawns hand as soon as the SUV was out of sight. I moved to the edge of the alley way, only to see my fears had been realized.
The K9 Unit pulled up to the checkpoint & stopped. The officer got out of the vehicle & moved to the back door, opening it. A German Shepherd hopped out, a dog vest on it saying "Police." I sighed & watching for a second. The man walked with his dog over to the lady officer running the checkpoint, talking with her. She said something back & he nodded, turning & walking towards the edge of the forest.
"Fuck..." I mumbled under my breath. I looked back at Dawn, seeing her walk up behind me. "Looks like they now have a dog watching the forest area. So plan A is probably out of the window."
"Well whats plan B?"
"I'm still trying to figure that out," I admitted, causing Dawn giggled a little.
I sighed a little & stepped back into the alley, thinking. What can we do now if they have a dog watching the forest? Ugh..
"Hey Ash, I might have an idea," Dawn said suddenly.
"Hmm? Whats the idea?" I asked curiously.
"Well, those trash cans are metal right?" she asked, pointing to them. "So dropping them or knocking them over would make alot of noise," she said.
"I think I get what you mean. You want to make a loud noise to distract them, don't you?"
"Yeah," she said. "If we distract them, we could go through the field while they aren't looking."
I mean, its risky but it could work. The forest is off limits with a tracking dog watching it. Some tracking dogs have a nose that can smell a 2 day old trail, so I'm not risking that. I turned, stepping further back into the alley.
"That is an option. But what about... uhm..." I said, trying to think.
"Hmm?" I heard Dawn hum curiously.
"Well, we could wait for a vehicle to try to leave. While they're distracted with it we can try to make a run for it," I suggested. "It seems like a safer bet."
"Yeah, it does."
"Well, I guess we wait," I said, walking over & sitting against the wall, making sure not to sit on any trash.
Dawn walked over, about to sit next to me, but stopping. "H-Hey, do you mind if I sit in your lap?" She asked suddenly.
I blushed heavily as I smiled & nodded. She sat down slowly in my lap, leaning her back against my chest. She moved her head slightly, nuzzling it against my neck as she got comfortable. I wrapped my arms around her waist, holding her with a smile. Despite the coldness of the air, I felt relatively warm with my arms around her.
We sat there for a while, I'd say about an hour. Some vehicles left & came into the city, but by the time we got ready to move, they were being sent through the checkpoint. If I known they weren't searching the vehicles, I would've asked Kenny to take us through. I sighed inwardly as we kept waiting. It wasn't long before I heard an engine from a good distance off. Must be something big.
"Dawn, I think our chance is coming up," I spoke quietly.
"I can hear it too, but how do you know it'll go through the checkpoint?" she asked at the same volume.
"I don't, but if its something big, why waste an opportunity?"
"Hmm, alright," she said, climbing out of my lap. She stood up, stretching some.
I stood up as well, stretching some. I started twisting my back, trying to pop it, only to feel a dull pain in my side. I let out a small grunt, earning a worried look from Dawn. I waved my hand at her, letting her know I was fine. I heard the engine getting closer, but slowing down. I moved to the edge of the alley & looked down the road, seeing an 18-wheeler coming to the checkpoint, its blinker on, about to turn into it. I silently thanked God as I grabbed Dawn's hand.
"Luck is on our side, its going to the checkpoint," I said. "Ready to move?"
"I'm ready," she said, giving my hand a squeeze.
I smiled at her before looking forward. The truck approached, slowing down & making a wide turn to accommodate for the trailer. As it did, I started to move forward, all eyes would be on it. We quickly ran diagonally across the street, going far to the left & into the ditch just down the road from the checkpoint. I crouched down & looked back at Dawn, giving her a smile. Just as I did, I heard the dog start barking. We quickly looked over, seeing the dog jumping against the rear doors of the trailer. The officers drew their weapons, aiming them at the driver & yelling at him.
I gave Dawn's hand a squeeze, before slowly getting up. I started moving forward, feeling Dawn move behind me, I started to run. We were out in the open running across this field, but it's what we had to do. About 150ish meters ahead, the field ended, turning into a slightly wooded area. Not many trees, but enough to hide.
We kept running, only glancing back once to check on Dawn, & make sure the police didn't see. After what felt like an eternity in that field, we made it to the first tree. I quickly got behind it, Dawn getting behind me. I looked back at the checkpoint, seeing the driver of the truck on his knees with cops moving in & handcuffing the man. I looked back at Dawn, before turning & slowly making our way deeper into the trees. I let out a sigh of relief.
"I think we made it," I said, panting slightly.
"Yeah, I think so too," Dawn said smiling, breathing heavily. She looked back inthe direction of the checkpoint. "What was going on with that?"
"Well," I said, following her gaze, barely seeing the checkpoint through the trees, "the dog started barking at the trailer, so he might've had drugs or something else in the back that triggered the dog. But we made it past & that's all that matters."
We went silent after that. I looked behind us, looking down the seemingly endless road to Canalave.
"So, guess we should start walking, huh?"
"I guess so," she said, looking down the road with me.
I smiled back at Dawn as I held her hand tight. At least the hard part is over. As we started walking down the endless road, I looked down at my watch. Its only 9:18. Wow, it feels so much later.
We walked for a while, just putting one foot infront of the other. It's all we could do. As time went on, we got further from Jubilife, & closer to Canalave. Occasionally, I checked my watch. 9:58, 10:19, 10:57. I don't know how far we walked, all I knew is my eyes were getting heavy.
"Hey Dawn, wanna find a place to sleep for the night?" I asked her, looking over at her.
"Yeah, that sounds good. My feet are hurting," she said, smiling & squeezing my hand.
I smiled, turning & starting to walk into the forest a little bit, not going too far from the road. We came across a nice flat area with not much snow on the ground.
"I think this is good. Do you want to have a fire or no?" I said, letting go of her hand & taking my bag off.
"Hmm, no I think cuddling up to you will be enough," she replied, smiling at me.
"Alright," I said, smiling back. I opened my bag & pulled the blanket out of my bag.
I set my bag aside as I sat down & started unfolding the blanket. Dawn moved over, sitting down next to me, quickly snuggling up to me as I draped the blanket around us. I smiled, laying back on the ground with Dawn. I felt her shuffle against the cold ground, cuddling up close to me & lsying her head on my chest. I smiled, wrapping my arms around her & holding her tight as I buried my face in her hair. We're finally out if the city. I can relax now, a little bit at least. Once we're in Canalave, we can get out of this God forsaken country. Go somewhere safe...
So... yeah, I finally posted another chapter. So sorry for the long wait guys. Honestly I just watched so much YouTube, I kinda forgot about it. I hope this chapter was worth the wait. I won't make any promises about the next chapter, cause I always seem to break them, but I'll start it soon! Well, I'll stop taking up yalls time. Bye guys
