-D.H. Caldwell and HAS5245
Back in Seattle, Jack was working hard to move Robert and Andy's things to his apartment. The lease was up on the condo and he did not want Andy's boxes put in some storage locker. Neither of them wanted to set foot in a storage facility, considering what happened the last time they were in one. Maya thankfully decided to help out and had been since six that morning. She even went as far as to bring coffee for the two of them to work with. Jack was thankful that Maya was finally taking the whole missing Andy and hope for her return thing more seriously. Either that or it was a result of the mandatory team bonding they had to do as a result of all the fighting. Jack shook his head and chuckled, remembering how the two of them argued the whole ride there over whose fault it was that they got sent there in the first place. It had been nothing short of a shit show but they managed to leave there understanding the other just a little bit better. "Maya! Are you done with the dining room yet?", Jack called as he rushed to throw a pile of random things into a half-filled box marked "station". Those were the contents from Sullivan's locker at the station, Jack figured. Maya must have cleaned that out the night before during shift. "Hey, Bishop, is there anything important in this "station" box?", he called again.
"What box?", she yelled back. "I'm busy boxing all of Sullivan's shit up. Figure it out yourself"
Jack rolled his eyes and sighed as he threw a random dress shirt and an alarm clock into the box. "You're a real help, you know that Bishop?", he yelled from the master bedroom as he hoisted the uncovered box into his arms and made his way to the open door. The box blocked his line of vision in the hallway and he tripped over a shoe, sending him landing on the ground with a thud. The box went airborne before landing on it's side, almost all the contents spilling out.
"Shit", Jack muttered under his breath as he got up and picked up the clothes and various items on the ground. He noticed that Robert's wallet and phone spilt out with them. His hunch had been correct, which means this was turnout locker stuff. Jack smiled and went to go pick the phone up. He pulled his hand away however, when he saw the screen light up and listened to the familiar ringtone. He wondered why someone would be calling this phone if everyone from here to Montana knew he was dead. Jack looked at the area code and frowned when he didn't recognize it. The call ended and Jack noticed a notification that let him know that the same number tried to call fifteen times before that. Jack grew nervous, whoever it was must have had something important to say if they were willing to call a dead man's phone that many times. He snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed the phone ring time, instead of letting it go to voicemail, he answered it and was shocked by what he heard on the other end.
"Hello?" he asked nervously. "Can I ask who's calling?"
"Hi, is this Robert Sullivan, Andrea Herrera's husband?" the person on the other end asked as Jack's whole body froze in place. Someone finally knew where Andy was. He had been looking for her for the past two months, praying that he would hear something at some point. Now someone was saying that they knew where she was. He missed his person and felt like part of him was constantly missing. His mind went back to the phone call as the person on the other end repeated their question, "Is this Robert Sullivan? Hello?".
Jack snapped out of his thoughts rather quickly and did the only thing that made sense to him at the moment; he lied. He wasn't much of a liar normally, but thought the situation called for it as it was doubtful that the person with Andy's information would give it to someone that wasn't family. "Hello, yeah, I'm right here. What can I do for you?", he asked as naturally as he possibly could so as not to make whoever it was suspicious. He also didn't want to get his hopes up. He thought to himself that the mystery caller could always be someone trying to collect money for a card that went unpaid or a bill. However, he knew Andy and he knew that when she ran away she wouldn't have left loose ends like that. She knew that anyone could have easily tracked her location through credit cards. The caller sounded urgent too; whoever it was had to be someone important.
He tried to listen to the person on the other line as they spoke, but got distracted when Maya walked through the door and yelled at him. "Hey, Gibson, Aren't you going to help me with these? Get off the phone, we have work to do", she scolded while glaring at him. Not in the mood for her attitude, Jack held his hand up and put a finger to his lips, signaling her to be quiet.
"Shhh. No, not you. I'm sorry, can you repeat what you said?" he asked the person on the other end while Maya mumbled something about him being an ass. He ignored her and instead focused all his attention on the caller. "I'm sorry, my wife's friend was asking me something about the UHaul. She's helping us pack since my wife had to go all the way there for work already", Jack lied.
Maya shot him a quizzical look, "Wife's friend? Jack isn't married. Is that Robert's phone?", she thought to herself while trying to piece together the situation in front of her. Meanwhile, Jack listened patiently to the person on the other line, his face growing more and more concerned every time the caller spoke.
"This is Enfield Memorial Hospital in Enfield, Connecticut. I want to inform you that your wife was just admitted a few hours ago. She was in a car accident", the person on the other line informed him. Jack's blood ran cold and all the color drained from his face. Suddenly he felt like he couldn't breathe; feeling almost like someone had whacked him in the stomach with a baseball bat. He took a seat at the kitchen island, gripping the edge with one hand, feeling like he was going to pass out. Andrea Herrera was in Connecticut, at the other end of the country, in the hospital nonetheless. She was alive, and he couldn't be more grateful even though he wished there were better circumstances. Visions of her dying before he got there filled his head as he tried unsuccessfully to shake them off. He cleared his throat and forced himself to smile, knowing that he had to remain positive for her sake. He felt like the room was spinning as he pressed the person, most likely a doctor, for more information.
He talked slowly and calmly as he asked his questions, "Is she okay? What happened?", he wondered. He looked over at Maya who was by now sitting in the kitchen with him, listening into the conversation. She showed a rare bit of sympathy and dropped what she was doing to be there for him when she saw his reaction to the call. She stayed quiet, wanting to be able to hear the whole conversation.
The person drew out a long breath before explaining what had happened to him, something not usually done on the phone, but she figured she would as he sounded so concerned for his wife, " A teenager was texting and driving. T-boned the car. Your wife definitely has some kind of guardian angel looking out for her. She coded once on the table, but we were able to bring her right back. She's lucky to walk away from that with just a few cuts, a slight concussion, a few broken ribs, and a left tib fib fracture. We did have to send her to the OR because of the extent of the fracture, and she is in surgery now. She was conscious and talking before we put her under and she asked for you.".
Jack exhaled and buried his face in his hands. He figured Andy was probably delirious if she was asking for Robert. Her asking was probably due to the meds they gave her over there for the considerable pain he knew she was in. He silently wondered how he would explain this to Maya and Andy's mother. He took a piece of paper from the console on the island and scribbled down the name of the hospital, while waiting patiently for more information. He wrote down the phone number of the hospital and thanked the doctor on the other end, telling them not to tell Andy that he was coming and that he would be there as soon as he could. "Thank God", he muttered under his breath as he put the phone down on the island.
When she realized he was finally off the phone, Maya took a seat at the island beside him. "Hey, Gibson, are you okay?", she asked, sounding genuine for the first time in months. Ever since the mandatory bonding day, it had been mostly civil, cordial conversations where neither her or Jack discussed their personal lives. "Gibson? Helloooo", she repeated when he didn't answer her.
Jack wanted to say something, but he was too shocked to get the words out. He looked like someone had just slapped him in the face. His face softened after a brief second and he looked like he was about to cry. Maya looked impatient, waiting for him to tell her about his phone conversation. "Andy's alive. I, um, I found her", he answered, without even looking at her. Tears glistened in his eyes as he spoke.
"What?" Maya asked, not believing him. She sighed and frowned, "Don't bullshit me Gibson. I'm serious"
Jack shook his head and showed Maya a bittersweet smile. "Andy gets the job when we get back. She's coming home", he stated as he threw his earbuds, his iPad, and Robert's phone into a random duffel bag he found on the floor.
"Wait, you're telling the truth?",she asked as Jack nodded affirmatively. She should have known that; Jack missed her more than anyone else. "What do you mean you found her?", Maya furthered, wanting to gather all the information she could so she could tell the team. They would be thrilled to know that someone knew where Andy was after all these months.
Jack smiled as he answered her questions, "Exactly what it means Maya. I know where she is. The person who called was a doctor at Enfield Memorial in Connecticut. Andy was admitted about an hour ago after a car accident". He continued to throw more items that he figured he would need, into the duffel bag.
Maya looked at him with a puzzled expression, confused as to why he was so happy about something so serious. "And you're smiling at a car accident because? Wait, Connecticut? How the hell did she get there?" Maya asked skeptically
Jack grinned excitedly, talking rapidly at Maya, something he often did when he was excited about something, "I freaking found her. Finally. I answered the phone, by chance mind you, and I found her". Jack quickly pulled up the last minute flights to Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks and booked one that was scheduled to depart four hours from now. He saved the tickets to his phone and shot a quick text to Maya with all the information. "So, my flight leaves in four hours. Any chance I can take like three days off?" he asked, knowing that she would say yes.
"You still didn't answer my question about how she got there", Maya answered while Jack gave her a look. She opted to forget about asking why for now and instead wished him luck on the trip. "Make sure you try to convince her to come home. I know it's hard to convince Andy Herrera to do much of anything when her mind is made up, but at least give it a try. I want to see her", Maya added, now smiling herself. Her best friend was alive and safe, and nothing mattered more to her in that moment. Jack's shifts and everything else could be figured out later.
"I won't pressure her but I'll talk to her about it" Jack compromised as he handed Maya a silver key attached to a globe keyring that Andy had given him last Christmas for good luck. She wanted to revive a tradition she had taken from her friendship with Ryan for her friendship with the second most important guy in her life.
Maya took the key and turned it over in her hand, "What's this for?"
"It's the key to my apartment. While I go to Connecticut, I need you to move the rest of the stuff. Their ass of a landlord is having the new people move-in two days from now.", Jack explained as Maya looked at him reluctantly. She had a million more pressing things and better things to be doing, some of them with Carina. The last thing she wanted to do on her rare weekend break from work would be hauling boxes of accumulated shit from one house to another by herself. "Please Maya. Get Miller or Montgomery to help you. Order pizza and make it a party", he pleaded, desperate for her help.
Maya rolled her eyes and sighed. "You want me to move all this and call our friends for help?", she whined. Jack chuckled at her reaction and asked her if she had a date to get to or something. Maya grinned, "Actually yes. Carina's off tonight for the first time in five days. She had a pretty big case going on at the hospital that she crushed and we were going to celebrate tonight with alcohol and very very hot and very dirty sex", Maya answered as Jack shook his head.
"I'm sorry I asked. Move everything in tomorrow, I don't care. Just leave me out of you and your girlfriend's sex life, please", Jack muttered as he started for the door. "She already hates me, I don't need her coming after me when she finds out you were at my apartment instead of doing whatever it is you do with her", he added, very aware of Carina's feelings towards him. The first time the brunette met him, she went off on him in Italian without even so much as a hello. The only thing he gathered from the conversation was that he was on thin ice with her, and that she considered him a frat boy among other lovely things.
"She doesn't hate you. She just doesn't like you or what you did", Maya clarified as Jack reached for the doorknob. Maya, remembering something else she wanted to say before he left, called back out to him, "Oh and Jack. Tell Andy I'm sorry"
Jack couldn't quite grasp what the apology was even for. For a split second he forgot about how terrible Maya was to Andy; he was too preoccupied thinking about seeing Andy in a few short hours. "Can I ask why you want to apologize now?", he asked.
Maya smiled, "Because, I want to fix our friendship when she gets back. And someone once told me that I'd be surprised how far an "I'm sorry" can get me. So tell her I'm sorry, for everything I did the past few years. Tell her that I want to make things better."
"Done Bishop. And didn't I tell you that?" he asked
"You did", Maya smiled remembering back to the day she cut her hair. The day she apologized to Carina and got back the best relationship she ever had because of him. She apologized and ran into Carina's waiting arms at the hospital, feeling more loved than she ever had. "You told me to do it and it got my relationship with the love of my life back", Maya added.
"Well, I'm glad I could help. Now about Andy's job? I love being in charge, don't get me wrong, but Andy's far better than I could ever be. Plus I hate paperwork and managing group workouts and all that shit" Jack explained as he stood in the door frame, twirling his keys around his finger.
Maya chuckled at the thought, thinking it sweet that Jack still had nothing but the highest thoughts about Andy and the work she could do. She caught him by surprise and hugged him before explaining her decision on Andy's job, "After she goes to therapy for whatever rash, stupid, and greif driven decision she made when she decided to up and leave, I'll have no problem with promoting her while you step down. I want to give her about a four month leave of absence first, so she can get the proper help before coming back to work"
"You want to commit her?", Jack asked, hoping to clarify
Maya shook her head and explained, "No. But she is going to talk with a grief counselor three times a week at Grey Sloan. I'm pretty sure what she did was out of depression and I need her to get a handle on that before she can go back to work".
"Oh, that sounds like a great idea. She'll have a lot of time on her hands to do it too. Andy had a nasty fracture on her left leg, so she's not going to be back for four months" Jack assured Maya.
Maya let out a small chuckle as she played with the key on the keyring, "Ha, good luck telling Andy that she can't work for four months". Maya remembered how insistent Andy was to get back into calls and what not after Ryan died. It wasn't even a day after his funeral when she went to the station and demanded that Sullivan let her work. With Andy being his girlfriend at the time, he gave in, knowing it was best for her and Maya tried to fight but then backed down when the captain's position came up. She wasn't going to make that mistake again. She was determined to have Andy's back whether Andy liked it or not. "She's like the most stubborn person I know. I know that if we didn't say anything, she would push herself to work, which is exactly why we're saying something", Maya added.
Jack groaned, thinking about how Andy would react to him and Maya barring her from working at the station. He wasn't exactly thrilled that he was going to be the one to have to tell her. "Don't remind me Bishop", he muttered as he picked up his duffel bag and started to close the door, pausing yet again in the entryway. "Make sure you tell the team. I'll tell Elena", he delegated. "We'll see you when we get back"
"Have a safe flight Gibson. Text me when you get there", Maya reminded him on his way out the door. After Jack left, she stood alone in the spacious condo, texting the group. "Found Herrera!", the text read with a party hat and noise maker emojis. She chuckled to herself knowing that she would be receiving a million calls about it later. And she was correct, it hadn't even been a second and Vic was already calling her.
Jack left the condo and hopped in his truck. He put the key in the ignition while simultaneously calling Elena. Elena answered it and at first coldly brushed it off as a joke, but was overjoyed when Jack assured her that he was serious. He told Elena that he would have Andy call her at some point in the next day or so to which she readily agreed. He figured that Andy would want some space after what she had been through. He couldn't stop smiling as he boarded the plane; even with all the unknowns it was hard for him to be sad. He ignored all the texts from the crew at the station and resolved to answer them later. The only thing he was focused on at the moment was seeing Andy. He was going to see her for the first time since the funeral, and he was going to try to ask her to come home. He knew that despite anything she told him, she needed him as much as he needed her.
