Lucy made her way into hers and Frodo's bedroom. The first sensation she felt when she opened the door was a dreadful cold. Grey mist and fog covered the floor, while all the lights were dim. It was unlike any room she experienced, and yet this room was familiar.
She turned back to Frodo, who stood like a statue in the hallway. He followed her! Of course, he did. Lucy smirked, seeing him again.
"Frodo, I…"
Frodo gestured her towards the room. "It's our worst fears, Lucy. It has to be. You go on. I'll wait here and see if I can confront my worst fear on my own."
Lucy looked at him in shock. She walked towards him, only to find the door to hers and Frodo's bedroom closed shut. Strange. It wasn't like that before.
Lucy looked at Frodo again. Dread crossed his eyes. Lucy had known this expression. She carried it herself yesterday, when she met Jadis. And now, it would seem that it was Lucy's turn to help Frodo carry this burden.
"Come on, Frodo," Lucy said, watching Frodo sit down on a bench. "What are you scared of?"
Frodo gulped. "I don't know. I'm too scared to go in there. You go on ahead. Let me know how it goes."
Lucy watched him in intrigue. Did he truly mean that? "You're scared? You don't want to go in there by yourself. You just want me to take care of you."
Frodo nodded. He paused, admitting to her, "I'm old fashioned."
"What does that mean?" Lucy asked, cautious. "So, you're letting me face my worst fears alone."
Frodo gazed up at her with seriousness. "I'm sorry, Lucy. We have to confront our worst fears on our own. It's how we were built."
"But we're supposed to be man and wife! Remember? We do this together!" Lucy said, kneeling before him, kissing his hands. She looked at him in interest, telling him, "Look, you don't have to do this alone. I'm right here beside you. You'll be safe."
Frodo's eyes glossed over. Alone. The very word dreaded him. He was used to being on his own. Everyone he knew left him. He knew it would do Lucy good to do things on her own. It would make her happy. That's all he wanted. No need to worry about him.
"Lucy, you go. Don't worry about me," Frodo said, pointedly.
"But Frodo…"
Frodo raised a hand. "Lucy, go. You go in there. I'll face my worst fears on my own."
"You can't be serious? Frodo, we do this together!" Lucy cried, confusing him.
"Just go! Forget about me," Frodo said, sharply.
Lucy stood up, telling Frodo, "Well, you should know there are people out there who care about you! You don't have to do everything by yourself, you know."
"What does that mean? I need to face my worst fears on my own, as do you. This is not your typical journey, Lucy. It's solo. It's always been solo! You need to understand that. I can't protect you from everything. Not here," Frodo said, serious.
Lucy nodded, heading towards hers and Frodo's bedroom. She looked at Frodo in interest, telling him, "I thought you were different. I thought you wanted to help others. I guess you don't." She gulped. "Goodbye Frodo." She opened the door, making her way into hers and Frodo's bedroom, shutting the door behind her.
.
Lucy pressed her back against the door's surface. She clasped her hands against her face, hardly believing what she had just went through. Ever since she opened the door to hers and Frodo's bedroom, everything seemed to have fallen apart. Did she fall into a mist? What more could she do?
Tears streamed down her face. She couldn't help Frodo! She wanted to help him. The need to help others was so great. She almost wondered what it would be like to be on her own, away from everyone she knew. Could she survive?
But no. The second she looked up; she saw before her figures dancing around the room. Ghostly figures dressed in colorful dresses and tuxedos. She moved through the crowd, noticing things were all right. No harm done.
She looked around, spotting Frodo talking with Jadis. No! Jadis was crowning Frodo. Narnia… it was desolate. Jadis was ruling over Narnia, causing a never-ending winter. Lucy had to stop this!
Her beloved home world was gone, destroyed! She loved Narnia. She looked at Frodo. He was king, but not the good kind. He was ruling over Narnia now in the evilest way.
Something awoke inside Lucy. She wanted to rule beside him. She wanted to embrace this darkness, to save Narnia… or watch it burn.
Lucy looked up, seeing herself crowned Queen of Narnia. They were ruling Narnia together in its darkest days. Lucy stepped forward, nearly touching the crown that would give her all the wealth in the worlds. Should she take it? She did. All at once, she saw her dark self laughing.
Lucy gasped, dropping the crown, but feeling the darkness reach inside her. The darkness was good. Lucy didn't know. She felt like she could rule the worlds. She was invincible. Now, she could do anything.
.
Frodo looked at the door to his bedroom. He couldn't believe he sent Lucy away. He looked down at the floor, seeing spiders move to and fro. He stood up at the sight of the One Ring envelop the area.
"No!" Frodo cried, trying to run. He couldn't. Sauron trapped him. He stopped and stared at the floor, collapsing there, whimpering. He didn't want to face this alone. He was facing evil on his own. Why did he send Lucy away? He only did that because he knew she was capable of doing anything. That was her dream, and he was grateful for her.
But this darkness… he couldn't do it. He couldn't risk doing things alone. He didn't want to be alone with Sauron. Oh, what should he do? Where should he go?
"Face this, Frodo!" Sauron's voice whispered in his ear.
Tears streamed down Frodo's face. He found himself bawling. The loneliness was enveloping him. All he wanted was to be alone. To face his worst fears alone. Maybe that was his weak spot: the loneliness.
"What do you fear? Embrace the loneliness. Embrace it, Frodo," Sauron whispered, laughing at him.
Frodo sighed, the tears stopping. Loneliness was his companion for the longest time. He was used to that. Frodo looked at Sauron now, wondering if Frodo needed his friends. Yes. Frodo needed his friends. Oh, why did he send Lucy away?
Frodo looked at his Dark Lord self, seeing him enjoying the loneliness. That was what Frodo was doing and Frodo hated it. He hated it! He… no. What was he doing? Hating himself? His light and his dark halves? Frodo sighed, wiping the tears from his eyes.
He needed Lucy and she needed him, right?
Frodo relaxed on the floor, allowing the darkness to envelop him. He didn't care. He'd been fighting this battle on his own, since before Lucy came here. When he needed her most, he shooed her away. That was all he was good for: shooing people away.
Did this mean he would have to suffer? Or could he make it without Lucy?
Frodo looked up at Lucy as she entered the hallway. Frodo gulped, staring at her in silence. Just the placid look on Frodo's face caused Lucy to stop and stare at him.
"Frodo, are you okay?" Lucy asked, worried.
Frodo gulped, "Lucy, we need to talk."
