About an hour later Street sat in the corridor of the hospital. Nervously tapping his foot up and down as he waited for the doctor to come back out of her room. The clunk of the door opening startled him from his thoughts.
"Doc," he said standing up, "How is she? Do you know what the substance was yet?" His questions flew out and the concern for her filled his words.
The doctor smiled and raised his hand to Streets shoulder. "We have taken samples as well as blood tests from Miss Alonso, but it appears that the substance must have been something quite innocuous. She is showing no ill effects and is asking to leave already."
Street glanced to the window into her room, though he couldn't see her from this angle. He nodded at the doctors words.
"Right, okay, so…."
"I am happy to release her as long as she has someone to drive her and keep an eye on her for the next 24 hours?" He eyed Street as if asking if that was him.
"Oh, ok, yeah I can organise that." He answered a little flustered.
The doctor nodded and smiled as he walked away to organise the discharge papers. "You can see her then." He added.
Street licked his lip nervously and darted his eyes about the floor as he tried to summon the courage to knock. He took a step and tapped gently at the door.
"Hey," He said softly as it swung open a fraction and he peered in. "Can I come in? Are you okay?" He saw her standing on the other side of the bed, typing on her phone. She turned around and placed her phone down.
"Oh, hey. I didn't realise you were still here." She said quietly not meeting his eyes.
'Well it's not like I'd just leave'. He screamed in his head as he looked back at her. "I was, ah, just waiting out there and giving you space to get sorted and checked and…"
"Right," she answered, looking down and tapping her hand nervously against her leg.
"The doctor says you're okay and you can go as long as someone keeps an eye on you for a bit." He offered trying to break the icy tension.
She nodded, "Yeah I just text Hondo and he is sending Tan over now."
"Okay, that's ah good." Street shuffled his feet nervously and rested his idle hands in his pockets. This tension was killing him. He wanted to say something, anything, but what? Where the hell would he even start anymore. He was starting to wonder if things were truly and utterly broken now. As he summoned the courage to look up at her, her phone began to ring, so he excused himself. He needed to get out of there. The suffocating heavy air was choking him.
Street sat back in the hallway, on the chair outside her room. He was hoping that Tan would hurry and get him out of here. As he listened to her talking to someone, he assumed Ty or Kira, he felt tears welling up and his jaw tightened. Fuck. This feeling had to be what true heartbreak feels like. When the one person you love more than anything else seemingly wants to forget you exist. He lowered his head into his hands and fought back a few sobs. He was trying to pull himself together when the sound of her door opening again made him glance to the side.
"Hey," she walked a few steps closer and leant on the wall, "Sorry about that," she said holding up her phone. "Uncle Sasso is sending Thomas to pick me up from HQ. I will spend the night with them until I get my clearance to resume normal duties."
Street had not returned her glance as he was sure his eyes were still red. "Okay," he nodded.
Chris scrunched her lips and sighed watching him. She felt so broken with guilt. She knew every single part of this, of them being so broken, was all her fault. Parts of her screamed at her to just sit beside him and say she was sorry. Open up a little and start talking. Tell him about Ty and Kira. Tell him she hates herself for how this is… anything… tell him anything.
But as she tried to summon the courage to say something, Tans voice surprised them both. Soon they were in the Charger on their way to HQ and Street spent the trip looking out his window, lost in his own thoughts.
Everyone was happy to see her at HQ. Hicks even stopped by to see how she was. Street watched from a distance for a bit before excusing himself and turning to walk back to the locker room. As he turned the corner, he met Thomas and another officer.
"Hey Street." Thomas smiled, "How is she? Sasso had me all freaked out."
Street put on his best smile. "Hey, no man, she is good. Just through there waiting for you. Keep a close eye on her for us."
"Yeah, thanks man, of course." Thomas answered as he smiled back at Street and headed over to Chris.
Chris was glad to see him. Glad to get out of here. But even as she sat in Thomas's truck, she gazed out the window thinking about how shitty she felt, how shitty Street must be feeling. She closed her eyes and cursed at herself. 'Just fix it, why can't we just do that.'
As she got settled in at her Uncles place her phone rang. It was the hospital. Chris picked it up excitedly. Maybe she already had clearance and could go home to her own place. But as she answered the doctor on the other end was asking her to come back in. They needed to run more tests and discuss some of her results with her.
Chris's stomach sunk. Her heart began racing and she wondered what on earth they had found. She had a gut feeling that this was gunna be bad.
Thomas drove her straight back and waited with her while they found the doctor. Chris sat fiddling with her fingers, looking at the floor. Even in this moment all she wanted to do was call Street. She wanted her best friend. She needed him. But she knew that she couldn't. She knew that that was her own doing.
"Ms Alonso," the Doctor approached.
Chris stood up and Thomas did too. "Am I okay? Did you find something?" she blurted.
"Please, follow me. We can talk in here." He said motioning towards the doorway on his left. Chris swallowed hard and nodded. Motioning for Thomas to take a seat and wait. As she sat on the bed the doctor looked over his clipboard. He flipped a page back and forth and then looked up.
"So, the blood test we took earlier today came back negative for any worrying chemical agents or illicit substances." Chris swallowed a little relieved and nodded.
"Okay, that's good." She said questioningly watching the Doctor.
"Uh huh, yes, it is." He answered.
"So, then why am I back here?" She asked looking at him questioningly.
"Ms Alonso, your blood test came back as positive for HcG." Chris sat looking at him blankly for a moment, before his words could sink in and she could process what he meant, he finished. "You are pregnant."
The words hit Chris's ears but didn't register in her head for a few seconds. She sat quiet, looking at the doctor who frowned a little looking at her.
"Ms Alonso? Are you okay?" He stepped closer and tilted his head.
"Um, uh huh, yeah, yep." Left her mouth less than convincingly.
"I know this might be a scary realisation for you being a SWAT officer and all, but you need to understand that we need to be even more cautious given the circumstances."
"Yeah, yeah, of course." She answered trying her best to be present and with it. When in reality she was lost in her mind which was spinning like a carnival ride.
As the doctor went on to explain a few other things her own thoughts drifted to swirl around the timing of this. She knew this baby could be Ty's, and wow what a mess that would be after she just ended things with them, and then well, there was also a chance that it could be Street's. She swallowed hard and felt physically sick. The doctor noticed her glazed eyes and absent expression.
"Ms Alonso? Are you okay?" His words sounded echoey and distant as Chris forced herself to focus.
Chris managed to nod and look back at him. "Sorry, taking this in." She waved her hand a bit and nodded. She listened as he talked her through the next steps. Ultrasounds, blood tests, regular check-ups and letting her employer know as soon as possible, as she was an active SWAT officer.
Before long, the doctor had finished and she headed out with a, "Thank you," as she turned to Thomas. He stood up and walked to her.
"All okay?" He asked looking from her to the doctors door.
"Yeah, just a few more tests needed, for work stuff you know." She fibbed. She was definitely not ready to disclose that bomb shell to anyone.
She had stuffed the ultrasound referrals in her bag and as they wondered out her brain was ticking a million miles an hour. It had been almost 6 weeks between the last time she slept with Ty and that night at Luca's with Street. She knew that that month and half gap would definitely tell her for sure who was the father of this baby.
Falling into bed later that night, she knew she couldn't turn up to shift tomorrow and face Street like this. Not knowing if this baby was a result of their night together. So, she text Hondo and told him she needed a few days to sort out some family stuff. Technically not a lie.
Those few days ticked by quickly. She kept herself busy repainting the granny flat at Sasso's. She had attempted twice to schedule an earlier ultrasound because this not knowing was eating at her. Then there were the moments when she wondered if she could actually do this. Have this baby. Be a mother. Likely a single mother.
Street had text her a few times. Simple check in stuff like, "Hey, hope you are okay?" or "Let me know if you need anything." But he knew to keep his distance and not push her.
The next day she walked into HQ, still terrified inside to face Street, but putting up the best wall and façade that she ever had. She greeted Tan, Deac and Luca in the gym. Noting Streets absence mentally and assuming that he was in the locker room or something. She was nervous about opening the door and seeing him, but as she headed around that corridor Hondo appeared at her side.
"So good to have you back Chris. We missed you. Is all okay with the family again?"
"Uh huh, yeah all sorted," she cut in. Hoping to avoid all the questions. As they entered the locker room Chris let out the breath, she had been holding in. He was not in there. No sign of him. The showers weren't running, and the room was empty. A little bit of saving grace she smiled to herself unpacking her stuff.
As she placed her badge up on the top shelf of her locker, she noticed a piece of paper folded in half with her name on it. She glanced in Hondo's direction before taking it out. Hondo had already turned to leave.
"See you out there," Hondo said as Chris smiled back with a nod, grasping the paper down low in her hand. She had instantly recognised the handwriting as Streets and her stomach was swirling wondering what it contained. As the door closed behind Hondo she turned and sat down. Unfolding the paper and reading.
Dear Chris,
I honestly hope you are doing okay. I am really worried about you, please know that I am here for you always.
Sorry I am not there today to talk to. I had some stuff come up with my mom and needed to go sort it out. I will see you in a few days. Please text me if you need anything.
Street
She breathed in hard, scrunched her lips and looked up at the ceiling to stop any tears that were there. 'Good god, what is going on with these hormones.' She whispered annoyed. But as much as she blamed the hormones, she knew that her not being there when he needed someone was more the reason.
During that shift she had asked Tan vaguely,
"So, what is up with Street's mom?" He had been surprised that she hadn't known already, and when he answered,
"She attempted to take her life. They called Street mid shift. He left and went straight to her." Chris's blood ran cold. Her stomach sank and she closed her eyes briefly. 'Jesus, and I was ignoring his texts,' she muttered feeling petty.
Soon their block of shifts was at an end and Street hadn't been back. She woke up on their first morning off and text him.
Chris: Sorry I have been quiet lately, I'm okay and I hope you are too. Thinking of you. I am here if you need anything.
Several hours passed and she got no response. Honestly though with how shit had been lately she wasn't surprised. When she arrived for the next shift, Street was in the gym on the bike. She slowed her stride and chewed her lip.
"Hey," She said quietly as she approached.
"Oh hey." He said taking out his earbuds and slowing the bike.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. Just wanted to say sorry about your mum."
"Yeah," He said sadly, "It's okay now."
She felt like crap that she hadn't been there for him. She was trying to form those words when Deacon approached.
"Let's go you two, we have a case."
During that mission Chris felt the tension between them. It was like they both had something to say to the other but neither knew how to find the right words at the right time. As the team moved back to Black Betty at the conclusion of the mission Street jogged to her side.
"I'm sorry Chris." He panted.
"For what?" She asked him a bit confused.
"Can we just slowdown here, stop, take a breath and talk?" She looked at him and could see the pleading in his eyes. "I have been so worried about you, on top of my mum and stuff and I need to know we are okay, that we can work this out. That I haven't lost you."
Chris shook her head slightly and kept walking. "Chris, please, I wanna talk."
"We should just focus on doing our jobs right now." She answered. Knowing that talking to him on shift, right now was not a great idea. That it would probably lead her to say something she shouldn't about everything that was going on.
Not long after they returned to HQ, Hondo sent them both out together on an errand. Maybe he had picked up the vibe between them and was trying to help them solve it. As Street navigated through downtown, they got a call about a car chase.
"26 David to command, joining pursuit at South Grand Avenue and West 7th Street."
Chris hit the lights and sirens as Street swung the charger around the intersection. She was sure he had cleared the traffic when suddenly they were hit by a car. Glass shattered and tires screeched as the right hand front quarter panel took the brunt of the impact. Slowly the chaos subsided, and the loud crash stopped ringing in their ears. Street came back to the present from his daze and instinctively reached his hand over to Chris.
"Chris? Chris?" He asked urgently, she looked down to the pain she felt, realising her ankle was injured. Blood dripped down her forehead from a bad gash, and she was dizzy. Her chest and stomach hurt from the seat belt.
"Chris, Chris are you okay?" Street asked as he tried to help her. He climbed out and ran to her side. Forcing her door open and going to lay her seat back.
"No, Street, don't!" She said.
"Why what's wrong?"
"I'm pregnant, I can't lay down like that." She blurted.
Soon EMT'S were on scene helping and Street felt his head spinning with that bombshell. Hondo and Deacon arrived on scene soon after. As Street underwent the necessary checks after being involved in an accident, Hondo went with Chris in the ambulance to be checked out. Before leaving hospital, Chris ensured that her pregnancy had not been recorded on LAPD documents. She knew that she needed a few weeks to work this out and tell Hicks and Hondo herself. When she was finally given the all clear and released, Hondo drove her back to HQ.
As they walked in to grab their gear so she could go home, they found Street in the locker room. Chris nodded at him as she entered,
"Hey Chris, how are you? God Chris I am sorry I …."
"Street, I'm fine, stop. It happens." She definitely wanted to shut him down before he blurted anything. She grabbed her things and waited for Hondo, fidgeting whilst he made small talk and went over that accident.
Chris wasn't okay to drive with her ankle in a boot. So, she had no choice but to wait for Hondo. As she wished time would speed up, Hondo took a call from Hicks.
Hanging up he said, "I gotta go see Hicks now. I'm sorry Chris. Look, Street? Can you please drop Chris home for me?"
"Oh no, Boss, It's fine, I can call Thomas to.." She stopped speaking when she saw Hondo's querying look.
"I got it." Street smiled taking Chris's keys from Hondo as he rushed out. He knew Chris was uncomfortable around him. His head still hadn't processed the idea that she was pregnant. Of course, he wondered. Wished? Could it be his?
He stopped and checked himself. He knew thinking that was getting his hopes up. He should not jump to conclusions and let himself go down that path. He walked out with her in silence and helped her into her truck. They drove in silence for a bit before he had to ask.
"So um, is what you said today true?"
"What?" She answered trying to deflect him a bit.
"Are you pregnant?"
She just nodded slowly looking away from him out her window, "I found out a week ago…. It's still very new and I'm scared."
"Oh…..." Street pauses. Thinking, if she only just found out…... it must be Ty's. "So, what do Ty and Kira think?"
She suddenly realised that he had just assumed it was Ty's. He must think that they made up after what happened and that they are all happy and cruising along.
"I, ah, haven't told them yet. Haven't told anyone." She answered watching her hands. He could see how scared she was. "You ah, wanna talk about it?" He asked pulling into her drive.
"No, I am just tired, I should rest." She climbed out, "Thanks for the ride. Look after my truck." She steadied herself and limped inside, closing the door.
As he watched it close, he felt a tear. It was killing him. The woman he loves more than anything is likely pregnant with someone else's baby and is pushing him away.
