Chapter 8.
So… things were officially as serious as he had thought they would…. Whether they were for good or worst he couldn't tell just yet. He wished things for them were not as complicated as they were… just for once, he wished his son could had things easy… it waisn't much to ask, right?
He had somehow confirmed his answer when he had literally jumped out of the car not even waiting for him to stop the engine, but he still had denied things, telling to himself that they were very good friends, the kids had grown up together, and he knew how his son relied on her, so he was hoping that this was all just coming from his oh so loyal friendship feelings.
He then entered the hall, greeted the people he needed and finally got to his lovely mate, ah, the relief that her presence brought to him… he felt as if every minute he was away from her took a year out from his life. oh, but she could also take away that peace with just one of her words, and that was just what happed the moment she got him to herself, he couldn't say that he wasn't expecting it, he could imagine what was she thinking for the way her sweet scent became tainted with suspicion and worry, and just a hint of displeasure, but he truly, truly wished to be wrong this time, hoped that he couldn't read her that well, prayed that the feelings coming to him in agitated waves through their bond were for anything else other than their actual reason… "I'm going to ask this just once, Toga, and I want to hear the truth" oh, she could be scary when she wanted, so that she can make even him fear for his own integrity "what is going on? You disappear for almost three days without any explanation, leaving me and Sesshoumaru to deal with all this, just to appear latter with my son made up a complete mess. I ask for an explanation, now, and let it be better a credible one" the fact that she manage to keep a soft and almost calmed expression on her face while demanding explanations out of him never stopped to impress him, even after all these years.
He had always admired that of her, even before they became mates, she was the only human brave and crazy enough to stand up against the great Inu no Taisho, the only one not afraid to speak her mind up to him. "I'm waiting" she pressed bringing him out of his musings "I have one, and a very credible one, but I ask of you to believe my word on this and wait, for here is not the best place to discuss that matter." He told her, and she immediately understood and didn't press on it, whenever he used such a formal way of speaking she knew something serious had to be happening for he didn't like to talk to her like that. Still that didn't ease her worries concerning her son "Inuyasha…" she started "he seems… off" she finally said not finding a better word to describe the way her son looked when he came to her earlier. She had seen him entering the room, eyes wandering the place looking for something, he looked anxious and on edge and she could swore that she had seen his marks come and go from his face at least twice in the time that it took him get to where she was. Not to mention that he was pale and his skin hot as if with fever, and even her, that didn't had any spiritual or youkai powers, could feel how erratic his aura was. She couldn't recall a time, other than when his transition happened, when her sweet little boy had looked that way, so feral and on edge.
Toga sighed, that was the thing he didn't want to hear, if she could feel that something was wrong then something definitely was wrong. "For that I don't have an answer yet, I'm suspecting something but I don't want to jump to conclusions yet. But I can assure you that it is not something that had our son's life at risk" he told her taking her small hand in his and bringing it to his face to kiss it. He saw the doubt dance in her deep blue eyes for a moment and then she let out a sigh and nodded. "I want to think that it doesn't have to be with his youkai blood but I know better. Just promise me, that you are going to protect our son from whatever it is that he is facing" "I promise" he told her. He also wished that it hadn't nothing to do with it, he knew that it was so much more difficult for Inuyasha to control his own instincts, the call of his blood that now forced most of his actions and even clouded the decisions he made, everything that was so easy and clear for him and Sesshoumaru was confusing to him for he had not complete control and understanding over the blood he possessed.
He also knew that it wasn't going to be that way forever, it was just a matter of time, it would take longer for him than for a complete youkai to control himself and understand the reasons behind his impulses but he would get it, Toga was just afraid that Inuyasha would make decisions that would scarred him forever before he could reach that moment. He also hoped that his son wouldn't be that stubborn and let him help him, but he was after all his and Izayoi's son, it was foolish to hope other than complicated coming from him.
He was afraid to ask where he had gone, but did it anyways, he nodded when he got his answer and decided to wait for he to come back. He led his mate and wife back to the hall. He needed to be near them when they came back, he would have to check on her, and he would had to be very careful too. So the closer he was the better.
But he somehow felt that nothing of that was going to be necessary once he saw his older son come to him, with a frown on his face but managing to keep the always bored and disinterested expression on. He swore sometimes he didn't understood him, how he manage to be this way? Definitely he didn't took that from him, that came all from his mother's side. "Father" he greeted him in his usual way "may I had a word with you?" as usual he didn't wait for a confirmation, and simply turned to walk out of the hall. Toga sighed, and thought again how did he manage to be like that? After giving a court glance to Izayoi, he walked after him, resignation running through him. He knew what he was going to tell him even before he did it, but let him talk all the same. "I'm afraid Inuyasha had smeared the reputation of our noble family yet again." He breathed out "how so?" Toga asked rising one of his perfect and thick eyebrows "the eldest of the deceased Higurashi's headman had been carrying his scent for the past three days." he informed "He has laid his claim on the female without the proper procedure. Every member of the board that had come here has smelled him on her and had been asking why they were not informed of that union." Okay, that didn't disappoint his expectations… and only served to strengthen his worries. "For now this Sesshoumaru had ordered them to keep their thoughts to themselves, for it is not the time and place to discuss the matter. But I'm afraid this one's noble father would have to clean after his son's mess, as usual." Toga sighed internally to his elder's antics, sometimes his way of requesting things from others were a bigger problem to Toga than Inuyasha himself. "Have you gotten a good sight of the human girl or seen a mark on her?" Toga ventured. "This one has not time to concern himself checking on the human. Besides she locks herself in that room most of the time." Came his unconcerned response "Then, I will be the one dealing with this now. You may considered yourself free from the matter" with that Sesshoumaru made his way back to the hall, just barely annoyed with the fact the he was force to be there for another couple of hours, leaving Toga alone to deal with his musings.
No matter how much he would have wanted to think otherwise, he still couldn't bring himself to think that it was something bad, Inuyasha taking Kagome for a mate, because it wasn't, it was actually something that he had hoped to happed for a long time now, he and Keiichi had even talked about it once before Inuyasha had to live his transition and the possibilities of him being with Kagome were reduced due to the possibility that he had to find someone capable to bear his claim, his perfect mate, not that Toga had stopped thinking that it could be her, he honestly couldn't think of someone better than her to be his son's mate. She was both physically and mentally strong, and had a temper that matched his son's, and they had been around of each other long enough to know that she had grown so used to his youki to the point where, even with her miko powers, none of them rejected nor harmed the other in any way, making it so that an union between them was not an impossible option.
But Toga was also aware of the call of the blood, that was the one that guide his kind, it seek a complement, someone that could contribute in the creation of a greater and stronger offspring, and that at the same time was able to settle it down. It was an interesting thing in fact, and something very difficult to find. So rare that it was thought to be a myth for a long time until for him it wasn't.
If her was the one his blood was seeking then there would be nothing to worry, but what if she wasn't? What if it was him forcing this on her just because he felt he was in love and would not accept any other female? He knew for a fact that could be the case too, after all he had been in love with Sesshoumaru's mother, believing for a long time that she was his one and only, until she wasn't. Thanks the heavens that she wasn't human, because otherwise she would have died once he mated Izayoi, his perfect mate, and the fragile bond they once shared became shattered into pieces. Not that any of them minded that, but don't take him wrong he did loved her, and in a way he still do, but that was the case with the youkai mates, if they were not the perfect ones but rather the most intelligent choice no matter if they loved each other in the beginning, those feelings start fading with time until all that keep them together was the routine and the sense of duty toward each other, that or they ended up voluntarily breaking the bond just to get free from that routine. They were few youkais that keep on truly loving their mates with the same passion they did at the beginning and those were the only ones that could be sure they had found their perfect mates.
But it was not that simple when it came to humans. Mating a human was irreversible, something once done had no way out, at least for the human, and he had made sure to explain that to him, because he knew that this could happen, and wanted to make sure that he knew what he was getting himself and her into.
He vividly remember the face of terror his son made once he told him what would happen if he decided to care freely laid a claim on a human woman. "Listen to me son" he had told him, his voice grave to convey the seriousness of what he was about to tell him "history has taught us that, contrary to what we once thought, we do have a perfect mate, one designed to complement us and stand by our side for as long as we live. It has just been a test from the kami to set most of them in places where we would have never even dared to look for before… but all the same designed to give us a reason, a purpose to live our lives for. You know how humans are weak, fragile, and compare to us, they live such a fleeting life. That is why it never occurred to us that our mates could be living among them. What kind of celestial punishment would it be to love someone just to see them grow old and died ages before you even start to worry about getting old yourself? But as you know, we have been gifted with the mating bond, which in case of mating a human, allows us to link our souls together and thus to share our vital energy so that they can live for as long as we do.
But history has also showed us what happens when a youkai force this bond upon someone that it is not their perfect mate. You see son, back in the time when this unification among our kinds had just become a reality, the time when I found your mother, many youkais found themselves attracted to humans and started to take them as mates, ones because they were truly in love with them and others just for the excitement of something new. Things started to go dark when they began to formally state their claims on them and forcing the mating bond on their intended ones.
Then it was discovered that not of all the humans were able to bear such claim, some of them died in the mating ritual, consumed by the pressure of the youki that was being infused into them, the others that were lucky to survive were condemned to live a life sharing a shallow bond with their mate, one that didn't allow them to link their souls and thus living a normal human life, aging and finally dying before their youkai mate. We also discovered that in this cases the humans couldn't produce a heir, neither could their leaved their mate to share their life with another human, the bond not allowing them peace if they even so start to think about it. The worst of this was the knowing that it was a union not meant to be, and the human mate usually ended up dying a few years latter consumed by the depressing fillings of being forced into that bond. With time this practice came to an end, thanks to the regulations set by the newly founded council board that set punishment to those that care freely decided to claim a human."
Once he had finished his explanation he had read the thoughts that were running through his son's head, it was not difficult to see where his mind had taken him to. Toga had seen the emotions dancing in his face while he heard his explanation, how it had gone from disinterest to worry, then horror and desperation to finally end in resignation and pain. He tried to give him some peace of mind assuring him that all he had to do was follow his instincts, sadly there was no other way to be hundred percent sure that one had found his perfect mate before actually claiming them, but for experience he knew that their instincts were never wrong, they scream within themselves assuring them over and over again that she is the one, and didn't let them get away from her once they have found her, but that had done little to comfort him. "There is no way I would risk doing something like that to anyone" he had said "we both know that my instincts are nowhere near where they should be, I'm just a half after all, how can I trust them?" he had told him, resignation and rage laced in his voice "even if I think I'm sure of my decision I may just end up killing her in the process because my youki is too much even for me to handle. I'm not about to risk the life of another trying to do that" –"you are jumping to conclusions too fast, son, you have yet to experience it. I can assure you that when it happens you won't have the will to stop it, that's how alluring having a mate is for us. We are not designed to be alone." He had told him trying not to sound too condescending with him –"just watch me, I won't give in to those stupid instincts. I may not even have a mate, after all I was not supposed to go through all this to start with…" he heard the pain his son's voice, all his life they were sure he was going to live a life more akin to a human one, with a few advantages provided by his youkai blood, and now he was being robed from all the things he had thought to be certain in his life, but from all them, Toga knew, this was the one he was grieving the most. It was clear for him the moment his son had reached a decision, one that he had adhere to for almost a year after she returned.
How it was that he had broken his own vow, he didn't know. What had lead him to act upon the same instincts he swore he would fight, was beyond him. Now all that matter was to make sure that his decision didn't carry more negative consequences than the possible positive ones. For now he was content with the fact that Kagome wasn't dead, yet… he could deal with the board later, even if things were not done in a proper manner if his claim on her was pure, as he knew it was, then there was no punishment to be given. But most importantly he had to talk with Inuyasha, and demand some explanations.
He had been avoiding him for weeks now. He was sure his father had something to tell him, that much was clear. And for the looks he had been receiving from both, he and Sesshoumaru, since that day on the funeral house, he knew that somehow it had to be related to Kagome. He was not sure why he didn't want to hear what he had to say, but he was almost sure that they knew what he had been doing, and that thought scared him, because he felt that they would ask him to stop doing it, and he found that he didn't want that. On the other hand he had been playing with the possibility that maybe he should stop, just in case that he was endangering Kagome's life. After all he didn't have a clear idea of what he was doing, other that it felt nice to be able to do it, and that she was the only person in the whole world that he wished to share that with. He also wondered what Kagome thought about it. He had also been afraid to ask what she thought he was doing. But since she hadn't mention anything he didn't want to be the one to pop the bubble they had been living in the past few weeks. In a way it had become their little secret, and he was good with having it that way.
As the days passed by, he discovered that not only could he take away her pain and unpleasant emotions but also could make her do as he said. At the beginning that had gone unnoticed, when he bit her after she denied to eat again in the private room of the funeral house, he had done it playfully with the hope in mind that by doing it she would forget that he had made her mad and listed to his request, he was truly pleased when she did just that. The second time he did it was in her house, when she was refusing to eat again, and again he had done it out of impulse, he bit her lightly while he hugged her from behind after begging her to eat at least a bit, this time he was astonished with her instant surrender, as she sighed and went to pick up the cereal that was waiting for her on her desk and started eating, glaring at him with unhappy eyes and accusing him on forcing her to eat again.
Just to try his suspicions he did it a third time, but with something different. She had been refusing to go back to classes or out of her house for that matter, and he understood that, but he also thought that having more of her friends around would help her to heal quicker, she had told him she wasn't feeling like seeing anyone other than him right now, and he felt honored to be the one she wanted but insisted that she had to see more people, she could not continue like that. when she continue to refused he tried to gain an agreement, if she didn't want to go out then they could come to see her, it was until she rejected that idea as well that he play his newly discovered power, he nipped that special spot on her left shoulder, while thinking that she must grant him at least that one. She had turned to eye him with accusative eyes and told him that it wasn't fair, but after a couple of seconds she had agreed to have them in her house that weekend.
After that he felt a bit concerned and promised himself to stop biting her unless it was completely necessary and for her own good. But he found it rather difficult to keep his fangs to himself. Now that she didn't seem to cry to the point she couldn't breathe or refused to eat he didn't have any real reason to play his trick on her, he went for almost two days without having to do it, and by the third day he started to feel physically bad, he tried to convinced himself that it was all on his head, that the throbbing in his fangs was just his imagination, that the pang in his chest when he leave her that morning was just out of pure concern for leaving her alone and not because of that stupid feeling on his chest that told him that he was neglecting her because he hadn't bitten her in almost two days. I mean how ridiculous was that! He was starting to worry that he was actually becoming as perverted as Miroku. But shame on him... he hadn't been able to stand to his own word and had given in to the urge the night of the third day, he was satisfied to see her eat without him begging her to and he wanted to let her know that, and for some reason he decided that the best way to do it was nipping her neck, because that was the obvious way to do it as he was sitting beside her too conveniently close to her left shoulder, instead of saying it with words. When he realized what he had done he wanted to slap himself in the face, and for a moment he feared that she would get mad at him for doing it, but when she turned to see him with a smile on her face instead of a frown he felt relieved, and as a plus he had also gotten the throbbing on his fangs to stop… fuck, He was definitely becoming Miroku…
He had to admit that leaving her alone had been especially hard those days. He still hadn't mentioned to her anything about her father's death and the real reason he had to go every morning. They were still on the look for the murdered and they were yet to find some clues. Yoshio and his father were starting to lose hope. Every day that passed they were more and more convinced that the culprit was already dead. So, as much as it bothered him, he decided that it was for the best interest to continue keeping it a secret from Kagome. He had kindly asked Miroku, Koga and even Hojo to keep their mouths shut in front of her, not that it was actually necessary because it was already supposed to be a secret for everyone else, but he didn't just in case they forgot.
Dealing with his fluctuating emotions of guilt and anxiety for being away from her would have been enough to keep him busy during the hunting, but he also had to deal with the fact that he was avoiding his father. It was easy to do so in the forest, when they were on the search, but not so much when the day was coming to its end and he had to sneak out to get back to her. He had lost count of the multiple excuses he had come up with to not listen to him, and he had his phone off most of the time, just turning it on a few times during the day to see if Kagome had called or texted him. He knew he couldn't avoid him forever but he would try to postpone the inevitable as much as he could.
The weekend came and he excused himself from the hunting, because Kagome had made him promise that he was going to be there when their friends went to visit her. He had agreed, after all he had been the one forcing her to accept having them visit her in the first place. It was supposed to be a girl friends reunion. He made sure to tell Sango that. Still he could accept having Miroku there too (though, he would had to ask how did he manage to get out of the search party as well), what he could not accept was the sudden intrusion of Hojo. When he came in the living room he throw an anger glace to Sango, who simply shrugged and whispered a "it was not me" so low that only his ears (the only set of youkai ones in the room) could get them. He had fought so hard to not get up and kick the idiot out of the room, feeling on the verge of losing it every time the bastard came close enough to Kagome that his knee graze her bared one, now he was regretting having told her that she looked good with that dress (which she did but still…) and not having her change into a pair of jeans instead, he definitely didn't want any part of her being in touch with any part of that bastard.
He was getting angrier and angrier with every word he heard him say, Inuyasha didn't know why he hadn't like Hojo even before he became kagome's boyfriend, but now he could see it quiet clearly, he was the type of guy that like to play dumb to gain a girl's attention. He knew perfectly well why he hadn't been allowed to get into the house, he had been the one to kick him out the first time he came and all the following ones before any of the Higurashi household got sight of him. He was the one who told him that he should not call her or text her either, just to end up blocking his number when he hadn't listened, and the bastard knew it, and still there he was playing dumb with Kagome apologizing for not being with her that past week. Oh, but that was a game he could play as well, so he had played dumb too, only smirking when Kagome had glance his way to confirm to her that it had been all his doing.
He had been so focused on not tearing Hojo's hands off his body that he hadn't noticed Kikyo there until she was in front of them, giving her condolences to Kagome. He had suffered for hours after that, putting up with her happy couple acting, and kicking himself for allowing her to get things this far, for even thinking that it was a good idea to agree to a fake relationship with her just to keep his distance from Kagome. Because yes, Kikyo knew his predicament. she knew that he had been trying to protect Kagome from falling in the horrible fate of him having a lapse in his judgment and forcing her to become his mate just to end up killed by him, or even worse, being forced to share her life with him feeling that she had made the worst mistake of her life and living a miserable existence where she could not be able to leave him nor really be with him until the day she die from sorrow.
Kikyo knew he had promised himself to protect her, and she had offered herself as a decoy. Foolishly, he had accepted, because she had grown on him during those horrible months where he suffered from his continues transformations and was lost to the lust for blood his youkai side craved. She had been really supportive then, and she even apologized every time she used her powers to subdue him, causing him more pain in the process. He had been a fool, to think that he could come to love her someday, if things got to that. Now he could see that she was in fact manipulating him from the very start. It had been earlier that year, when Kagome came back, that he realized her true intentions. The selection of the head miko of her clan was close and having the support of the Taisho clan was without doubt a great advantage.
She had been very persistent on formalizing their relationship in front of the elders, and when he told her he didn't think it was actually necessary because there was no way there were going to actually formalize anything later, she tried to convince him telling him that it was just to make Kagome back up on her intentions to stay close to him, he had almost agreed, but then she had let her guard down and told him that once the selection was over they could call it off, and he understood her real reasons. He had denied her request time after time after that, and that pissed her off immensely.
He could feel how uncomfortable Kagome was, and every minute that passed she was getting angrier, he wanted to make Kikyo leave but somehow he knew that if he decided to do that she would not go out the room without putting on a show that would end up with Kagome learning the true reason that cause the rift between them. And he rather not have her learning that now. So he endured it, he would make sure to make it up to her later, when they were alone again. He thanked the heavens when everyone called it a night and started to go their ways. Everyone but her and Hojo, that seemed not to take the hint that they weren't actually welcome to stay more time than necessary. He wanted the earth to open and swallow him whole when she had asked him to get her home. When would her manipulations stop? He thanked her mother's ability to know when to intervene and kikyo's false politeness that forced her to agree with her elder's request. That got him rid of two problems at the same time. With them gone, he just had to take his mother to their house and come back before Kagome fall asleep. Easy. But then again his mother surprised him.
When he was getting ready to leave with her she told him that it wasn't necessary, and as intuitive as she was, she didn't stop herself to suggestively add "I know you may have some things to talk" he knew that her mother never approved his relationship with Kikyo, she had been always known to be a number one Kagome's team member. Out of everyone, she would probably be the happier woman in the world if he broke up with her and start dating Kagome. But as everyone in his family she also knew why he had been keeping his distance from her. "And I already call your father to take me home." He heard her continue "So if Keiko doesn't mind, you are free to stay a little longer, babe" for some reason he felt tense to hear Kagome's mother answer, there was a reason why he had been sneaking into the house like a thief, and it was because he feared that her mother had come to resent him for the treat he had been giving to her daughter lately. He was relieved when he heard her said "I don't" but then he also felt mortified when she added "it's not as if he hasn't been staying here every night for the past week, anyways" and here he thought they had been being careful not to let them notice... for his utter embarrassed he watched them both share a knowing look and giggle "now you know, you didn't had to sneak into her room" his mother added patting his check, one he was sure had to be red with shame. "Mom…" he protested. "Oh, don't worry, honey, we know you wouldn't do anything unappropriated" Kagome's mother commented. if only they knew...gosh, he was feeling even worse now… "Mom!" at least he knew Kagome felt the same.
He saw her mother leave the house but didn't go beyond the front door, afraid to see his father, he could read in his mother's face her understanding and she didn't ask him to come great him, instead she waved her hand and gestured for him to go back inside. Great, so she was aware that she was avoiding him, and thus must know whatever it was that his father wanted to discuss with him…
Their way up to her room was rather uncomfortable, after hearing their mothers' comments and watching the knowing glances both women had thrown their way. Kagome had been the first to speak once they family made it to her room, for what he was grateful -"I'm sorry about that", she told him and a shy smile -"I guess I had to be expecting that… my old man always knows when I'm not at home" he tried to explain, after all his father did knew that he wasn't home, and he had a feeling that this was his mother's way to call up on his behavior, an indirect way of telling him to stop avoiding his father. He felt his cheeks getting red all over again, but the exact reason of his embarrassment wasn't clear this time, was it because he had been caught sneaking on Kagome's room or because he had been caught avoiding his father? he wasn't sure anymore.
For some reason Kagome found his predicament amusing and she started laugh, really laugh, like he hadn't seen her done in what felt like ages "hey…what's so funny?" he asked, trying to sound irritated when all he wanted was for her to continue laughing that way. -"I'm… I'm sorry…"she tried to explain but was having trouble to stop her laughing "your face… I can't … it's too funny…" she managed to say at least. -"happy to see you find it amusing, wench" he scoffed, and made his way to sit on her bed. Gods, it was a sight to behold. She was laughing so much, he loved her laugh, even when she said that it was horrible, for him it was the most beautiful sound, there she was with her hands folded against her stomach and tears rolling from her eyes (the only tears that he could accept, the ones that come from her laughing) and Inuyasha couldn't think of a time when she had looked more beautiful. It took her a while but she finally managed to stop and he had to hide his deception and remember that he was supposed to act mad at her for laughing at his expenses, but he couldn't, he could feel that he was grinning like an idiot, but he didn't care – "it had been so long since I last saw you laugh that much" he let out before he even realized he was saying out loud.
She closed the distance to her bed and plopped herself by his side. -"Yeah, well, it had been a while since we last share a nice moment together…" he felt a pang on his chest at her words, he had been an idiot, a big time ass to her this past two years, and yet here she was letting him in again, so carefree, trusting and beautiful. He absently raised his hand to accommodate a strand of her hair that had fallen on her face and place it behind her hear, she was looking at him with her curious brown eyes and he let the words "I'm sorry" left his mouth, it was an overdue apology and a pretty lame one if you ask him, but he couldn't find other words. -"about what…?" of course she had to ask, he suppressed a sigh, where to start, there were a lot of things for what he was feeling sorry about –"just… everything… me being an idiot... you having to go through this… everything" there, that would have to do it, for now. –"I'm sorry too" she took him by surprise with her apology, she had nothing to be sorry about, he was going to tell her that when throw herself to him successfully stopping his words –"I hated it, every moment that we've been apart, it was awful… I don't want us to be like that again, Inuyasha" he locked his arms around her.
He had hated it too, every second they had been apart, every time he had to act as if he didn't care about her, every tear that he had made her cry during this year in his pursuit of keeping her away "I promised you I wouldn't let you alone again, right? You can be sure it ain't gonna happen again" he assured her trying to comfort her, he would have to make up to her for this awful year while making sure he protect her from everything, including him, he swore to make sure of that. As if to seal his oath he pressed a kissed on her forehead and then he rest his check on top of her head -"I don't even understand why it all happen to start with" she said after a while and lifted her face to see him in the eyes, he couldn't help it, he tense a little at that, in was clear in her eyes that she truly hoped for him to tell her the reason.
What could he tell her? Sorry I got away because I feared my feelings for you may be the reason I may end up killing you? Or better, Kagome I'm afraid I'm now a monster moved by his instincts, that had no control over his own blood, and that may be the cause that end up condemning you to a life of sorrow by my side that would finally lead you to wish death? Nop, none of the options seemed appropriated so instead of answering her he just pressed another kiss on her forehead and went for the third option, he pretended not to know the answer "I'm not sure either… but we are here now, I'm here" gosh, he was the worst…"promise?" she asked using that soft and hopeful tone of voice she reserved for the times when she wanted to make him agree to do something -"promise." He said trying not to giggle like an idiot. He could not understand how she could make him do whatever she wanted with just a few words. If Sesshoumaru saw him he would make fun of him, saying how weak he was. But he found he didn't actually care at all, he would be weak with her, if it meant that he could make her happy.
In that moment Inuyasha thought that he was going to be able to make it, he could protect her, up until now he had been able to somehow manage to prevent what he feared to happen. Maybe there was a way in which he could make things work for them. Live their lives as they would had before he had to suffer the transition. He could be there for Kagome, just as before, no strings attached. Be there for her for as long as she needed him, and when she decided that was time to move on and leave him, he would accepted that and let her go (as long as she didn't decided that she wanted to be with Hojo, he could be able to accept her being with any other…. No, it was too soon to think about that, he realized. But still he would have Miroku locked him down on a cell reinforce with a million sutras if it was necessary to make sure that she got the happiness she deserved). But for now he would treasure all and every moment he had with her, because this memories would be the ones that keep him going when the moment to let her go came. And with that though he allowed himself one more kiss this time her on the tip of her nose and pull her to lay down on the bed with him.
