Hello Everyone! Themusicmaniachere!
I've been so off on weekdays! Before I knew it, it was Saturday again!
Robbie Street: I wasn't sure anyone was going to notice that! Valerie is actually description less intentionally because generally it helps the reader to be able to relate to her better. I can give a description if enough readers would like one, but for now, I'll leave it up to what you imagine her to be!
I also wanted to thank all of you for reading this story. There are so many of you now! I really appreciate your support!
Be safe out there, have a wonderful week, and enjoy!
There weren't as many stairs as I thought. We climbed the first tower on the left side of the bridge and found Darkwing Duck, Launchpad, and Dewey talking.
I looked around the lair.
It was amazing.
Much of the hideout was as I remembered it: various platforms were spread throughout. Some held costumes, one held a gigantic computer and monitor, and the Ratcatcher sat in the middle of the room.
It was the same as I remembered it except… modern.
Everything was up to date: the computer had a flat screen, there was a glass case with some costumes, and even the Ratcacher seemed as if it was built this year.
"Keen Gear!" Gosalyn whispered. "Let's go check out that cool motorcycle!" She pointed at the Ratcacher.
"Okay, but… won't they see us?"
"They're too focused on their… is that a talk show?" She said staring at the group who had just seated themselves on the couch. She shook her head, "C'mon!"
I followed her, making our way to the Ratcacher as she sat on it, watching the three who were enveloped in their talk show. I chose to lean on it.
No one noticed us.
"So, DW, got any projects?" Dewey asked as a recorded crowd applauded.
"Defending the defenseless at every turn" He laughed, "Also, I've got a cookbook."
I had to stop myself from snorting as Dewey pulled out a cookbook with the title "Let's Get Flavorous!" It had a picture of Darkwing cooking on it.
A crowd from nowhere awed as he confidently added "Self Published."
"Oh Cool." Gosalyn said from our perch on the Ratcacher. Darkwing, Dewey and Launchpad all gasped and jumped, "So is stopping that crook Taurus Bulba on that busy schedule?"
"You- How did yo- What did-" Darkwing ran to the railing and yelled.
I was bent over laughing as Gosalyn gave an "Aha!"
"We totally found your secret headquarters. The residue from your smoke bomb contained traces of salt water so I knew you'd be by the bay. Also, that kid is live-streaming. It was not hard."
"A little interdimensional knowledge helps too." I laughed as Darkwing jumped over the railing and lunged for the both of us. I ducked to the side as Gosalyn jumped over him and ran. He chased her as she looked around the hideout.
"Keen Gear, this place is huge!" Gosalyn commented as the two ran around.
"Dewey, do something." Launchpad said as Dewey filmed the thing.
"I can't! This is good television!" Dewey exclaimed, as he angled the camera to get Gosalyn in view.
"Trust me LP, this is destiny in the making." I leaned my arm against the railing and watched the two.
"Wha- how did you know my name?" Launchpad asked, eyes wide and honestly looking a little terrified.
I looked at him for a moment. Launchpad… he's not one to keep secrets. But, he's also really gullible, and easily scared. I probably should just tell him so that I don't cause problems later.
"It's a long story, but… " I paused as I noticed Dewey was watching. "I'm from a different dimension. Where you exist. As part of a television show."
Launchpad took a second to think about this.
"Cool! What's it about?"
"Well, you're the sidekick to a superhero…" I turned my gaze to the two figures chasing above us.
"DW?" He said in awe. I nodded. "Really?"
"Really." I said as we all followed the duo above us and Gosalyn came to a stop in front of the glass case and grabbed an arrow. We caught the last bit of the conversation.
"You have a bit of a complex, don't you?" Gosalyn asked him as she tossed the arrow back at him. I snorted. She hit it right on the nose there.
"What do you want, villian?" DW said as he slammed the glass door of the display case.
Okay, that was rude. I walked behind Gosalyn and put my hand on her shoulder.
"Ah-ah-ah It's Gosalyn, actually, and we want your help, hero. We figured you owe us one." I nodded.
"You kicked me in the face!" Darkwing exclaimed.
"You stopped me from exposing Bulba!" She said.
"Not to mention you almost got us caught by him." I added, solemnly. Gosalyn looked up at me as I said this and slid my hand off her shoulder and squeezed it. I looked down at her and gave her a comforting smile. The thought was scary, but it was a reality.
"Wait- why wouldn't you want to be caught by Bulba? He's a friendly upstanding citizen with great taste in superheroes!" Darkwing looked confused and so did the others behind him.
"He's a thief, and maybe worse. My grandpa, Doctor Waddlemeyer built the ramrod under Bulba but Grandpa discovered a flaw in the programming. The ramrod was unstable and dangerous. One night we went to warn Bulba, and never came back. Now Bulba's claiming that he built the ramrod but if I can get that ramrod key, I can prove it's dangerous, stop Bulba, and find my Grandpa." Gosalyn explained, "And her story goes even further."
"Bulba had an accident with the Ramrod. He brought me out of my dimension and into yours at the same time that Gosalyn's Grandpa went missing." I sighed, "When he discovered me… he tried to hide me from the world. I had to escape through the vents and jump down the building. That same day, I was attacked by FOWL, almost arrested, and met Gosalyn. We've been trying to set things right ever since."
"Okay, but do you have any proof?" My face fell. I should've known he wouldn't believe us. Not like this.
"Besides those stories and the fact that Bulba's a jerk?" Goslayn retorted.
"Listen, I- I feel for you, both of you I- I do, but... he's an upstanding citizen and I've caught you breaking into two separate places in twenty-four hours. Without evidence, I- I can't risk a good person's reputation."
"You mean you don't want to risk your own. Some hero. You know what? We'll do it ourselves like always." She started to climb the stairs and I let her drag me.
We just got rejected by Darkwing Duck. Just like that.
What about Gosalyn? How are they going to become a family now?
Also, why didn't FOWL concern him? Isn't that the organization he's supposed to be fighting? Isn't SHUSH supposed to be funding his tech?
I watched Gosalyn let go of my hand and sat on the windowsill. I sat beside her, looking at the sky.
"Hey! Wait up!" It was Dewey.
"I don't want to be a part of your weird show, alright?" Gosalyn said, looking up at the sky.
I looked at her. The last time I saw her this sad was when I told her about her grandpa.
"This isn't about my hit show." I turned to look at Dewey. "I- I know what it's like to search for someone that's missing. And I know what it means to have someone believe you. Let me be your Webby."
I smiled, not sure at all what he was talking about. Webby existed in this universe, but- who was he looking for? A family member? A friend? Webby herself?
"Who?" Gosalyn asked. Oh yeah. She has no idea who Webby is at all.
"I mean we'll Dewey it." We both looked at each other and at him.
"Does that mean you'll help? Gosalyn asked.
"Let's "Gos" for it, Gosalyn." Dewey swung his arm.
"Please stop." Gosalyn said as I laughed.
"Thanks kid" I said, standing up holding out a fist. He bumped it and made an explosion sound.
"Where are you going?" Gosalyn asked.
"I'm gonna see if I can remember any "proof" from my dimension." I said, holding the railing of the staircase.
Gosalyn nodded. Dewey looked between the two of us and stared at me.
"What kind of proof?"
"We'll see dear Deuteronomy." I said smiling.
"Why are you calling me that?" Oh. I was taken aback by that. That was something different.
"In my dimension, that's your name." I said shrugging.
"Wait What? You know me in your dimension?"
"Not really. You're a character in a television show."
"I'm on TV!" Dewey nearly yelled.
I knew immediately that this was the wrong move and that maybe telling him this information wasn't the best choice.
"Yes…" I said slowly.
"I have a million questions! What am I like? Who do I fall in love with! Why is my name Deuteronomy?"
"Let's… continue this conversation later. I said as I bolted down the stairs. Dewey yelled "Hey wait!" as I ran right into Darkwing Duck himself.
"Hey, where are you going."
"I wanted to talk to you." I said, straightening out my jacket. "Also, I revealed too much about my dimension's version of Dewey and he's asking a lot of questions. Kid really likes attention."
"Well, yeah, who doesn't?"
"I know some people, but...Fair point." I said.
"So, being in a different dimension… what's that like?" He asked.
"You believe me?"
"I'm not saying that I do, but… theoretically." He backtracked. I sighed.
"It's weird. Nothing is how I expected it. I've seen several characters from different television shows in my dimensions and they all live in the same city. Some things are the same, others are different. Like Taurus Bulba being a scientist. The Ramrod bending reality. Dewey hanging out with you two. Do you even know what FOWL is?"
"Uh….." Darkwing said.
"And I bet your name isn't even Drake Mallard." I said disappointedly.
"Wait…how do you know my name?"
"Your name IS Drake Mallard?" I asked.
"Yeah, I doubt you'd heard of me unless you're a huge Darkwing Duck fan like Launchpad and I. I was going to star in the movie. Darkwing: First Darkness." He said, gesturing to the poster in the glass case at the bottom of the stairs.
"Wait, you're an actor?" I asked.
"Is there something else I was supposed to be?"
"A superhero. A father."
"A what?" Drake looked taken aback.
"Also, is more Darkwing Duck media than the movie?" I asked.
"Well, it was based off of a TV show." He indicated the case next to him. "I have the entire run of comics and most of the merchandise."
"Gosh, I wish I'd lived when the original Darkwing show ran." Drake looked at me strangely.
"How old are you?"
"I'm 20." I said, smiling. "How old are you?" I shot the question right back at him.
"Well…" He kind of trailed off here. "I'm 28."
"Gosh, you're younger than I thought you were gonna be." Drake's face contorted into a look of indignation. "And so is the show…" I muttered to myself, as he yelled an indignant "Hey!"
"What?" I defended, "My version of Darkwing has to at least be nearly forty!"
"So your version of Darkwing bears MY name, is a father and is nearly forty years old!"
"Well, yeah." I said, "And Launchpad's there too."
Drake Mallard was lost for words, and frankly, I wasn't sure what to say either. I finally broke the silence.
"Well, what are we going to do next?" I said, walking up to the computer.
"What do you mean what are we going to do next?" Darkwing ran to catch up in front of me, his back to the computer.
"It seems Dewey has taken a liking to Gosalyn, and I saw your little conversation with Launchpad." I said, grinning, "It means you're going to help us, right?"
"Help you?" Darkwing sputtered, "I don't even know your name."
"Well you already saved me from falling off that window cleaning lift. Heroes don't need to know who they're saving to save them. It's why they're called heroes." I said, looking up at the computer.
We both stared at each other in silence.
"You got me there." Darkwing said. "But, since you know my name, it would be nice if I knew yours."
I held out my hand to him. "Valerie Smith."
"Darkwing Duck." We shook hands. "Superhero, crimefighter, better than Gizmoduck…"
I laughed at that.
"So you've heard of him too." He deadpanned as we ended our handshake.
"He also exists in the Darkwing Duck show in my dimension." I grinned, "You both seem to have a fair dislike of him."
"Well at least they got that right."
I smiled.
Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad after all.
"Alright Everybody!" Drake yelled as he headed towards the Ratcatcher. "I've made an executive decision. We're going to Taurus Bulba's hideout to see what he's really up to."
Dewey and Gosalyn shared a look and ran down the stairs, as Launchpad made a really excited squealing noise. I followed Darkwing and got on the motorcycle behind him, as Dewey, Gosalyn and Launchpad all piled into the sidecar.
I wrapped my arms around Darkwing's waist as he opened up the garage door that led onto the bridge. I felt the wind in my feathers as he revved up the engine to head into the city.
"Let's get Dangerous." Darkwing said as he pushed the gas pedal and left onto the bridge. We all hollered and I saw Gosalyn and Drake share a look. I smiled, looking at the city ahead of us. The city of St. Canard seemed surreal as we finally got to head into McDuck labs for what was hopefully the last time.
This chapter was exciting to write. It was a lot what with the plot and all, but exciting!
Stay tuned for next week's update, I will have it up sometime in the weekend.
Also, Happy Hanukkah for those who observe it!
See you all next week!
