Feral

Kagome rolled to her side.

Tomura had been oddly quiet during dinner earlier.

She'd known that he was uncomfortable but there was something else—a strange tension that'd formed near the end of the meal. He seemed on edge somehow, almost as if he were expecting her to reject him and push him as far away from her as possible.

Had he truly been so reviled in his past that even the thought of kindness made him shy away?

Her heart twisted uncomfortably at the thought.

How cruel.

Kagome sat up fully.

Her gaze slid to her phone for a brief moment.

She never got his phone number. Twice now he'd shown up at her doorstep but she never thought about getting his number so that they could contact each other more easily.

Her face heated at the thought.

Should she ask him or would it be better to wait for him to return and allow him the chance to asker her when he was ready?

This whole thing was so confusing for her.

Kagome buried her face in her hands.

She hated all of this uncertainty. She just wanted to see him again.

The young woman blinked as her phone began to vibrate noisily.

She glanced over, taking in the unfamiliar contact that flashed across her screen.

Was that Giran?

He did change phones frequently to avoid being traced, so it was a possibility.

Her lips twitched as she slid her finger across the screen and answered it.

"Higurashi speaking," She struggled to keep her voice from shaking.

Why did she always feel so nervous like this?

"Higurashi," A stern voice came through on the other end. "There's something I wanted to talk to you about."

Her stomach sank even further.

She recognized that voice.

It was one she hadn't heard in a almost a year. He'd never called her before so it was a bit of a surprise that he was doing so now.

"How'd you even get my number?" Her brows furrowed at the thought.

The man sighed heavily, "It was still in your file with the school. I was granted permission to use it to contact you."

Her jaw clenched tightly at the thought.

Figures as much.

"So, what'd I do this time?" She set her feet on the floor and sat up fully.

This couldn't be good. Not if he was calling her.

"It's nothing like that," The other person sighed once more. "I just wanted to check in."

She blinked, "You wanted to check in?"

She was sure the incredulousness in her voice spoke more than her actual words to how she truly felt at the moment.

"I apologize if this comes off as terse but it's been a year since I attended that school. So now you want to call and check in? Excuse me if I'm a little confused about this."

This was getting strange.

He had never been the type to call or check in on her even when she had been his student.

Aizawa wasn't the sort of man who called for no reason. If he was calling now then certainly something had to be up.

"I wanted to talk."

Kagome closed her eyes.

This was not going to be pleasant.
