Chapter Seven: Finally, some water! We're all parched!
A few hours came and went for the heard. Clay and his friends and family looked up when they heard Dune roaring for them to move again. And once again, Clay, his family and friends struggled to keep up in the back. As they trudged back into the sand covered terrain, Clay could only hope that they would find more relief soon.

The sun had long since passed midday when they came to the edge of the desert. The sand crunched underneath their talons as they came to a stop. At the head of the herd, Sky and Dune looked to each other as they recognized the area. They nodded to each other before they both let loose some roars to get the dragon herd moving again. The herd started moving and Peril looked up to where her brother was and she too recognized the area. Everyone in the herd started grunting or chittering to each other. But no one seemed more happy than Meatlug as she too recognized the area, "The lake!"
"We made it?" Yar asked with a chuckle. Meatlug glanced to the Scavenger on Baylene's back and said, "It's just over that hill, my friends. We're almost there."
"Oh, thank goodness." Baylene said as she was ready to have a nice long drink of water. Clay started to run ahead and looked back and encouraged, "Come on, Meatlug. Water. You remember water don't you?"
Meatlug laughed as she did her best to keep up. Then with a chuckle she said, "Oh, it's just about time to refresh my memory."
The herd climbed up the hill as they all eagerly awaited to quench their parched throats. But when Sky and the two young dragons that stuck around Peril made it to the top, they were shocked by the sight. The entire lake looked completely dry from one sandy shore to the next. Sky looked as if this was a bad omen, but didn't move or say anything. When Dune and Peril joined him at the top of the hill, they too became shocked by what they saw. Sky took a few steps forward while his sister looked worried and Dune only wore a glare upon his face. The rest of the herd joined them and they too became distraught at what they saw. As she and the others walked up the hill, a happy Meatlug said, "I'm just gonna go walk right into that lake until the water's right up to my eyeballs and soak it all in."
But when she could see the lake, Meatlug's smile fell when she too saw the state of the dry lake. She sighed in sadness as she thought that all their travels had been for nothing. They could see the bones of a dragon long since dead sitting in the lake bed. The leader of the herd could still barely believe his eyes at what he was seeing, but knew that the herd couldn't stay long. Dune walked up to the Skywing and then said, "Maybe the rains were collected somewhere else." He looked to his leader and then asked, "What do you want us to do?"
"Take a scout and check the entire perimeter. Leave no place unsearched." Sky ordered. He glanced to the Sandwing and nodded for him to go. Dune understood with a nod before walking off to select someone. Sky looked to the two young dragons as they started to whimper. Though he did feel sorry for them, Sky remained firm as he said, "Enough!" His shout made the boys look to him and the Skywing said, "You both have to be strong now."
Turning his head to the herd he raised his voice to give them hope, "The nesting grounds are only a few days away from here." Then he ordered, "Keep moving!"
The herd all groaned at the news. Peril walked up to her brother and said, "Sky, we've never gone this long without any water." He looked back to her as she pointed out, "If we keep going like this, then we'll lose half the herd."
"Then we'll save the half that deserves to live." Sky said with a growl. Sky stopped for a second, becoming angered by her brother's words, but continued to walk. Sky let loose a roar for them to pick up the pace. Sky let loose another roar and the herd started to move along the shore of the dried lake.
"What? They're moving off already?" A baffled Baylene asked. She didn't feel like she could go much further as she said, "Oh-Ho, we'll never keep up like this."
Down on the lake bed, Meatlug was still distraught about the lake. She shook her head as she said, "There was water here. Always been water here before. Every time we came here there was water."
Clay could see that she was greatly upset and walked down into the lake to try and help. Plio also made her way down the side. Meatlug continued wail, "We always had water, always.
"And- and plenty of mud too." She cried. With a saddened sigh, the Gronkle fell to the ground in a defeated heap. Seeing her friend acting this way, Baylene walked down and said, "Oh, Meatlug, please. Don't cry." She then said, "The herd will not wait for us. We must carry on."
Yar, Suri and Zini followed after the hydra. Moving to her other side, Clay tried to use his head to push Meatlug onto his feet and said, "Come on, Meatlug. You gotta get back up. You can't quit."
Baylene made a thundering stomp as she stepped onto the lake bed. Meatlug then cried out, "There was water everywhere here."
"There is no water, dear." Baylene said with a sad shake of her head. With each step the hydra took, the ground cracked and made sloshing sounds under her feet. Clay grunted as he continued to try and push Meatlug onto her feet. But when Baylene was but a few feet behind them, Clay started to hear the odd sounds and looked the hydra. Baylene stopped while the three Scavengers continued walking up to them. But Zini stopped when he too heard the odd sounds. Clay looked down to the hydra's two feet and an idea came to him. He told his friend, "Baylene, stop. Don't move a muscle."
"Oh, what? What is it?" A now worried Baylene said as she looked about. Clay walked up to her and looked down to where her feet were. Baylene looked down to the Mudwing and asked, "What's wrong, Clay?"
Clay and Zini looked to each other as they were both getting the same idea. Zini lowered his head to the dirt and could hear the sounds of sloshing coming from the dry lake bed. Looking to the Mudwing he asked, "Do you hear that, Clay?"
"I sure do." Clay nodded. Looking to the hydra he asked, "Could you lift your foot, Baylene?"
"Okay." She said and lifted it, even though she was a little confused. When it was out of the way, Clay and Zini moved toward the hole and started digging a little. They were able to get a few loads of dirt out of the way. But as he dug, Zini got a little carried away and fell into the hole. He was quick to get back out and dug a little more. Meatlug gave a dry cough since she was so dehydrated. The two dug a little more dirt out of the hole and made it a little deeper. The Scavenger stopped when Clay stopped digging. Clay looked up to Baylene and said, "Now press your foot down into the hole."
"Okay." Baylene said as she was starting to understand it. She placed her foot into the hole and started to press down in it. It took a second, but her foot went in a little deeper and a puddle of water bubbled up from the ground. They were all amazed by the sight. Zini started whooping in joy as he jumped up and down while saying, "I always did like big girls!"
"Water!" Clay breathlessly said. Baylene raised her head up and said, "Oh, my goodness! It's a miracle!"
Clay let out a roar to tell the herd about what they found. Everyone looked down the side of the lake to see what the commotion was about. Clay then had a smile as he said, "Water! We found water! Come on!"
Clay then lowered his head to start making more room for more dragons. Peril smiled as she said, "He found water." She chuckled as she said, "They found the water."
Clay dug a little more dirt out of the way. Then he pressed a little more pressure to more water to flow. Plio and Meatlug walked over for some water. Baylene smiled and she said, "That's it, Meatlug, my dear. Come for a drink."
The seven friends started to have their fill of the water. The two little dragons cooed at the thought of some water and started running down the hill. With a snort, Sky pushed past Peril and started running for the watering hole. He snarled as he passed the little dragons by and continued towards the group of friends. Clay raised his head from the water as some dripped from his chin and saw Sky running up to them. The Skywing slowed his running to a walk as he came closer. With a smile, Clay told him, "Look, Skye. We just had to dig for the water and-"
"Good." Sky said, cutting him off. Then he ordered, "Now, get out of the way."
Clay was shocked by his attitude but backed away as Sky started roaring in his friends and family's faces. They all backed away from his display of aggression. Seeing as he had the water to himself, Sky then plunged his snout into the water and started to drink his fill. Clay watched in anger before looking to the incoming herd. They all gave out roars and screeches as they ran forward. Clay tried to get them to stop by shouting, "Wait! Wait!" But they didn't listen even as he shouted, "There's enough here for everyone!"
But he was pushed aside and yelped in pain as a few dragons stepped on his talons. The herd started to gather around the watering hole, but Sky wouldn't let them near yet as he snarled in everyone's faces. Meatlug, Baylene, Toothless and the Scavengers all watched as everyone fought over the water. The smaller dragons were pushed out of the way and the much bigger dragons started plunging their snouts into the water. Meatlug tried to stay out of their way as they continued to gather around the water. She let out a startled cry when they got too close and pushed into her. Clay heard her and shouted, "Meatlug! Are you alright?"
He rushed through the herd to see if she was alright. Clay stood protectively in front of her as the herd continued to converge on the water. From atop the hill, Peril watched as the herd continued to fight for a turn for the water. She was surprised to see Clay still defending the Gronkle as he angrily said, 'That's it. Keep pushing and shoving, everyone." He nudged another dragon for emphasis and then said, "That's very helpful."
Peril looked from Clay and the Gronkle to back over to her brother. She watched as he raised his head and roared at the herd to try and get them away while he continued to drink. They were scared off for a moment, but when Sky plunged his head again did they return. Peril just sighed before walking down into the lake bed herself.

Elsewhere, Dune and a Leafwing by the name of Applewood were walking along the dry river that led to the lake. But they had been walking for miles and hours had passed and they had seen no signs of water. The sun was starting to set and the shadows were starting to creep up all around them. Applewood looked to the Sandwing and said, "Dune, we've been walking in circles. We've passed by these rocks before." With a shake of his head he said, "Face it, there's no water in here."
The Leafwing gave a nervous look around the area and then said, "I think we should get back to the herd."
"Shh. Keep it down, Applewood. Don't want anything to know that we're here." Dune hissed at him worried for more predatory dragons. They continued to walk through the maze-like rocks, unaware that trouble was following them.
One of the wyverns quietly hissed when he could see their prey and decided to play with them for a bit. The wyvern turned down one way and could see his brother going down another.
Dune smelt a new scent in the air, and it's one that he hadn't smelt in a long time: wyvern. Looking to the scout he said, "We need to go, now."
"What is it?" Applewood asked, now feeling a little frightened. But Dune only growled and said, "Let's just go."
Dune started to turn when he thought he saw a shadow on a rock wall not too far from. But when he looked again, he didn't see anything. But Dune knew better that that. He knew this was how wyvern's hunted. He then said, "Go. Now!"
The two quickly made their way out of the area. But when they came to a narrow section of the river, a growl made them stop. One of the wyvern's said, "Yes. Flee, flee. Run for your miserable lives."
"There is nowhere to hide." A second voice said. Dune then said, "We gotta get out of here."
Another growl and a moving shadow behind the two made them even more nervous. But before they could start running, Applewood felt a searing pain in his back leg and let out a pained shriek. One of the wyverns started to drag the Leafwing into the shadows as Applewood cried out in pain. Dune was about to move in to help him when a roar from behind him caused him to come face to face with the bigger wyvern. Dune backed away and raised his scorpion like tail in defense. Even Applewood was able to defend himself by slashing his talons at the smaller wyvern. The smaller wyvern backed up before lunging forward again. Dune tried lashing with his tail, but the bigger wyvern was able to dodge it before sinking his teeth into the end before the bulb. Dune cried out in pain before slashing his talons across the bigger wyvern's snout. The bigger wyvern roared in pain and released Dune's tail. Dune was able to put some distance between him and the bigger wyvern and hissed when it came closer. Over with his battle, Applewood cautiously backed away from the smaller wyvern. The two lunged forward before backing away from the other's snapping teeth. Dune once again lashed out with his left talons, but the bigger wyvern was able to clamp its jaws around his foreleg. Dune cried out in pain as the wyvern continued to tear at his flesh. But with another swipe of his talons, Dune was able to free his arm. The Sandwing limped backwards as the wyvern came closer. Both he and the bigger wyvern glanced over to Applewood and the smaller wyvern's fight. Applewood was able to turn a full circle and slapped the smaller wyvern in the face with his tail, but it infuriated the other dragon as it snarled. It leapt into the air just as Applewood faced it again and the Leafwing cried out as the smaller wyvern crashed into him. The tumbled along the ground and stopped with the smaller wyvern on top of Applewood. Applewood struggled underneath the smaller wyvern and the smaller wyvern evilly smirked as he repeatedly slashed Applewood in the face. The Leafwing cringed in pain and it gave the smaller wyvern an opening. Lunging forward with his clawed hands attached to his wings, the smaller wyvern sunk his longest claws into Applewood's neck. Applewood gasped from the pain before kicking the smaller wyvern in the belly. The smaller wyvern backed up a bit from the blows, but he could feel that they were pitiful attempts. Applewood turned on his belly and started to crawl away from his attacker. But the smaller wyvern didn't let him get far by sinking his teeth into Applewood's tail. Applewood once again cried out in pain as he was once again dragged into the shadows. The smaller wyvern then let his tail drop before slamming his winged hand down on the Leafwing's back. Applewood grunted in pain as the smaller wyvern then walked up to his head and clamped his long jaws around the back of Applewood's neck. Applewood looked to Dune with fear in his eyes before a swift motion from the smaller wyvern's jaws broke his neck.
"Now that is a pity." The bigger wyvern hissed as he looked back to Dune. Dune quickly ran the other way as the smaller wyvern ripped a chunk of flesh from the dead Applewood. Dune struggled as he climbed up a small hill with the bigger wyvern right behind him. The Sandwing was really close to losing his tail when the bigger wyvern lunged up the hill, but his teeth clacked together on air when it missed by a few inches. The bigger wyvern climbed up the hill and looked down at Dune who tumbled and got a few bad scraps as he slid down the slope. The bigger wyvern thought of going down there after him, but another idea came to him. He watched as Dune shakily picked himself up and started to run once again.
When he was gone, the bigger wyvern gave a roar of victory. The smaller wyvern looked up from his meal as his brother joined him. With a quirked brow, he then said, "You sure sounded triumphant when you have no meal to enjoy."
"It would have been satisfying to have feasted on the Sandwing." The larger brother said. But he smirked as he said, "But when he rejoins the others, he will strike fear into their hearts."
"And that fear will cause them to become desperate and make mistakes." The smaller wyvern finished with an equally sized grin. His brother nodded and then said, "Now, make room. We'll both need our strength for the feast ahead."
The smaller wyvern huffed before taking a step back. The larger wyvern's jaws drooled at the sight of meat before it. Not wanting to anger his brother, he then lunged down and clamped his jaws down on the dead Leafwing's side. With a strong tug, he was able to rip of flesh from the body. The two wyverns continued to eat their fill in the dried river bed.

Dune did his best to run back to the herd, but with his leg in such a ruined state he knew it would be morning by the time he got there. But he huffed as he said, "Gotta get back and warn Sky."
Looking down at his ruined limb, Dune could barely feel with it. Taking a deep breath, the Sandwing had to do what he didn't want to and leaned down with his jaws wide.

Author's Note: I know that the ending was a bit heavy and I think we can all assume what Dune had done. I won't go into the specifics of it, but basically he'll be more like the version in the book. I made the encounter with wyverns a little longer since it was a bit too short and neither Bruton or the other guy tried to fight back. But I'm gonna add a little more to the next chapter that we don't see in the movie. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
