Chapter 8!

The next month flew by and Lorna was picked up from the Tavern by Mike Zacharius has normal, she was then escorted to Commander Erwin Smith's office. Levi wasn't there yet which didn't surprise her, he kept her waiting for over an hour sometimes until he turned up at the office. She was kept company by Erwin until Levi arrived at his office, Erwin would normally sit at his desk and finish his paperwork while she drank tea. He didn't really speak to her much, but he would ask her now and again if she was comfortable.

Lorna would just tell him yes even though the padding on his wooden bench was wearing thin, but she guessed he had more important things on his mind than benches and padding. But today she had something to ask him, if anyone knew where the birth records and death certificates were kept then it would be him. She took a sip of her tea and placed it down on the side cabinet next to the bench, she then got up from the bench while she stretched her hands above her head.

Erwin looked up at Lorna from his paperwork, he placed his pen in his ink pot and cupped his hands together with a small smile on his face. He stared at Lorna like he was waiting for her to say something to him, he must have known she wanted something because he would normally just carry on with his paperwork if she got up from the bench. She walked over to his desk and sat down on the chair across from him, she then thought for a moment before she spoke with him.

" If I asked you a favour, would you grant it for me?" Lorna asked.

" It depends on the favour and what it obtains for me to grant it." Erwin replied, his speaking tone was serious. " You do understand I've bent the rules once before so you could be granted visiting access to a certain Scout we both know, you maybe taking advantaged of my goodwill."

" It's not a bad favour, I just wanted to know if you would be able to find out about my family's bloodline." Lorna said while she crossed her arms. " I just thought it was about time that I looked into my heritage, I want to know if any of my parent's bloodline are still alive after all of these years."

" I see..." Erwin said, he brought his cupped hands to his chin and kept his gaze on her. " You do understand that it's not my area of expertise, you would have to speak with one of the Town Hall's clerks to gain that sort of information. What area were your parents from exactly before they fled to The Underground City?"

" They were both born in the Karanese District." Lorna replied.

" Then their family records would be held at the Karanese District's Town Hall, you would have to go there and make yourself an appointment with one of the clerks. " Erwin said. " But I must warn you, the knowledge that you want to seek will come at a hefty price. They do not just give family heritage details away for free, it always comes with a price to obtain it."

" How much are we talking here?" Lorna asked.

" I believe the amount would be over hundred gold coins." Erwin replied.

Lorna raised an eyebrow at him and watched Erwin turn his attention back to his paperwork, that was a lot of money for finding out about her parent's bloodline. It would take her at least six months to save that kind of money up, she could help herself to some of her monthly allowance each month if she desired. But then again she would feel guilty by reducing the amount of money she give to her Landlord each month, the money she gave him supported his business and gained his family's stability in the district. Maybe it was best if she just didn't bother looking for her family's bloodline right now until she could afford it.

Lorna sighed and got up from the chair at Erwin's desk, she then walked back over to the bench. She sat back down on the bench and drank the rest of her tea while she watched some little blue birds bouncing around outside of Erwin's office window, they seemed to have no cares in the world which she envied. Lorna wished she had the freedom the little birds had, no more cares or worries about the world around her.

Lorna's thoughts soon turned back to her family's bloodline, she would do anything to get the information she needed to find out about them. Her thoughts were interrupted by someone slumping themselves down on the bench next to her, she quickly turned her attention to where the noise had come from and she saw Levi sitting down next to her. He must have entered the office without her even noticing him, Erwin told them he was leaving now to finish his paperwork in another room. She told him okay while she watched him leaving his office, she then turned her full attention back to Levi and said hello to him with a smile. He returned the greeting and stared at her from the corner of his eye, her smile soon faded when she turned her gaze away from him. She placed her teacup down on the bench and cupped her hands together, she was kind of lost in her own thought right now.

" Are you alright?" Levi asked.

" I'm fine, how about you?" Lorna asked.

" Alive..." Levi replied.

" I guess that's better than nothing." Lorna said while she glanced at him and twirled a strand of her hair around her finger. " It's better than being dead I guess, I know there was a lot of deaths caused this month from the expedition outside of Wall Maria, I saw many body bags on the back of the returning wagons last week..."

" Your tone is morbid, are you sure you're alright?" Levi asked.

" I'm good, you don't have to worry about me." Lorna replied.

" Then what's with the face?" Levi asked.

" There's nothing wrong with my face..." Lorna replied.

" Yes there is, you look like a sulky brat." Levi said.

Lorna sat in silence for a while after that and stared at button on her blue waist jacket, she couldn't get the thoughts about her family's bloodline out of her head. She really wanted to find out more about the Faiths and the Jaegers, she was going to have to work really hard to save that kind of money up. Lorna thoughts were interrupted by someone resting their hand on the back of her neck, she was pulled down towards the bench seat's level and her head somehow ended up resting on Levi's leg.

Lorna jumped slightly when she found out that the hand belonged to Levi, she tried to sit back up but he told her to relax. She frowned slightly when he called her a sulky brat again, she tried to sit up again but Levi just pulled her back down to the bench again. She gave up in the end and curled up on the bench next to him, he then went onto tell her to close her eyes. She did what he asked and tucked her hands underneath her chin, she had no idea what he was trying to do.

" I remember you doing this with Isabel when she sleepy." Levi said. " I always thought she looked at ease when you did this with her."

" Well it's not the same, I actually feel uncomfortable doing this with you..." Lorna said.

Lorna squirmed a little bit when felt Levi's finger tips running up the back of her neck, he ran his fingers through her hair and then rested his hand on the top of her head. Lorna opened her eyes and stared at the door, she was beginning to relax. She lay there in silence and listened to the birds tweeting from outside of the window, but then the silence was broken by Levi's voice.

" You're lying to me..." Levi said.

" About what?" Lorna asked, she looked up at him. " I have no reasons to lie to you, I'm always honest with you."

" Then why were you sulking?" Levi asked.

" I'm allowed to sulk now and again, it's not a crime!" Lorna replied.

" It is if you're unhappy, tell me what is bothering you." Levi said while he gently brushed some of her fringe away from her eyes with his thumb. " You can trust me..."

" Okay, maybe I was lying to you." Lorna said with a sighed. " My Landlord's Son was ill last month, but he's well now. It doesn't really concern him, but it concerns the doctor that came to treat him. You see the doctor shared the same surname has my Mother and I'm now wondering if he's any relation to me, I've never really thought if I had any living relatives left on the surface."

" I see." Levi said.

" But I found out from Erwin that you've got to pay to find the information you seek at the Karanese District's Town Hall, the price is over a hundred gold coins and I can't afford it..." Lorna said. " I'm going to have to work my ass off from now on at the Tavern until I've saved enough money up to be able to pay a clerk to find my family's records. I could take some of the money from my monthly living allowance, but then it would feel like I'm stealing from my Landlord even if it's my money because that money helps him support his business."

" Then allow me to to gain the knowledge that you want to ease your mind..." Levi said.

" No thank you, I want to do it by myself this time." Lorna said while she sat up straight and placed her feet down on the floor. " It's about time I did things like this by myself anyway, I mean I can't keep relying on you to help me out like you use to do in The Underground City. I'm a barmaid and you're a Scout, we both lead very different lives now. I want to earn the money and pay for my family's records all by myself for a change, I really don't need your help this time."

" Fine then, have it your way." Levi said.

Lorna looked at Levi sitting next to her, his gaze was firmly set on the bookcase on the other side of the office. She sighed to herself and leaned back against the bench while she crossed her arms, she hoped she hadn't sneaked him by refusing his kind offer. He himself could get sulking at times like a brat, he just didn't know it.

A few weeks later.

The weeks had flown by once again, it was now the beginning of the New Year. It was the year 844 and the district was now quiet after all of the celebrations that had been going on since yesterday, it had been a busy night for everyone who lived in the Tavern. Lorna had been run off her feet with all of the meals she had to serve and the tankards of ale she had to pour for the local customers, it didn't help much with the drunks trying their luck with her. She had to dodge a few unwanted advances and drunken kisses, she was definitely ready for bed after all of that unwanted attention she had gained this night.

Lorna had helped her Landlord to lock up the Tavern, he bolted the doors while Lorna made sure all of the windows were locked on the lower level of the building. She took the last tray of used tankards to the kitchen and returned back to the bar area, she then blew out the bar area's wall lanterns with the Landlord. He told her that the Tavern would be closed today because the townsfolk would be sleeping off their hangovers and spending sometime with their families, she had a day of rest ahead of her which was a nice thought.

Lorna said goodnight and hurried upstairs to her room, she couldn't wait to have a few extra hours of sleep instead of getting up earlier in the morning to prep the bar area before the evening. The fireplace in her room had already been lit, the Landlord's wife must have lit it before she turned in for the night. Lorna took off her shoes and unbuttoned her waist jacket while she walked towards the open window, she then closed the window's shutters.

Throwing her waist jacket over the back of a chair near the dresser Lorna did the same with the rest of her clothes until she was only wearing her undergarments, she then took a nightgown from the dresser's draw before she headed to the washroom. She got washed and changed into her nightgown, she then blew out a candle that had been left burning on the side of the washbasin. Pulling the red ribbon from her hair Lorna ran her fingers through her hair while she yawned loudly, she needed to brush her hair before she turned in for the night. She placed the ribbon down on the dresser, but she looked over her shoulder when she felt a cool breeze enter the room.

Lorna frowned slightly when she noticed that the room's window was now open, she could have sworn she had closed it before she went to use the washroom. Picking the hair brush up from the dresser she walked towards the room's open window, she may have not locked the shutters properly. The street below the window was quiet and still, no one was around expect for a few cats sitting on a step outside of a house across from the Tavern.

" How strange..." Lorna muttered.

Lorna looked both ways down the street before she closed the window's shutters again, but this time she made sure they were locked. She brushed her hair before she placed the hair brush back down on the dresser, she was now ready for bed. Lorna placed the fireguard in front of the fireplace and hurried over to her bed, but when she pulled the blankets back on the bed there was a book hiding underneath them.

" What's this?" Lorna asked while she picked the book up from the bed. " More to the point, someone has been in my room!"

Lorna looked underneath the bed and checked the washroom, no one was in her room. Lorna was beginning to wonder if a customer had been in her room when she had been working in the Tavern. It could be anyone, she locked the bedroom's door and walked towards the bed. She sat down on the bed and opened the book, but to Lorna's surprise there was an envelope inside of it. She quickly opened the envelope and took the letter from it, her heart skipped a beat when she found out that the letter was from Levi.

Quickly reading through the letter Lorna frowned to herself when she had finished reading it, he must have gone to the Karanese District's Town Hall to get her family's records. She was annoyed that he had done this for her, it could cause trouble if Erwin found out about it. She placed the book down on the bed, her thoughts soon turned to the contract she had signed. Levi had signed it before Erwin had changed it for her benefit. She had no idea if Levi would get into trouble if he saw her outside of their monthly meetings, but then again she didn't even see him enter her room. He had no idea about the classified part of the contract, it was a messy situation.

Lorna jumped from the bed and hurried over to the fireplace, she then moved the fireguard from in front of the fireplace. She knelt in front of it and watched the flames dance amongst the burning wood, she needed to get rid of this letter. She took one last look at the letter before she threw it on the fire, what an halfwit Levi must be she thought to herself while she crossed her arms with a sigh. She stared at the fireplace and watched the letter burning amongst the wood, Levi must have risked his neck to get this book for her unless he paid for it out of his own pocket. If that was the case then she would pay him every single gold coin back even if she had to pay him each month with installments because her wages didn't stretch that far, but for now she would have to hide the family records he had given her in case anyone found them in her room.
