Nora only had to stay in the hospital overnight. Her doctor had decided to give her intravenous steroid treatment the two days she would be there. There was nothing wrong with her from the pool. Nora slept most of the time she was at the hospital, including during her treatments. Frasier had called Frederick once he had Nora in the car and asked his son to put her wheelchair in the garage. Frasier had Nora sit tight while he retrieved her chair. When they entered the house, Frederick walked into the kitchen to greet them. He bent down and hugged Nora tightly, "thank you for rescuing her."
"You don't have to thank me," Nora whispered.
"Dad, do you need help?"
"Darling, where do you want to go?"
"Bed, please," Nora was still tired but not as much.
"I should be okay, son. Thank you," Frasier took his wife to the bedroom and helped her to take a warm bath, wash her hair, change into pajamas, and get into bed.
"Grandpa," Frasier turned and found Elie standing in the doorway, "I know grandma needs to sleep, but can I sit in here with her? I'll be very quiet. I promise," the little girl looked really upset.
"Sure," Frasier lifted his granddaughter onto the bed, "you come and get me if you or grandma need anything."
"Okay," Elie got under the covers and snuggled up to her grandmother bringing a smile to Frasier's face as he left the room.
A few hours later, Nora woke up and felt a weight against her. She turned to find Elie asleep and snuggled up to her. The image puts a big smile on Nora's face. She just laid there with her granddaughter and enjoyed the moment. It was another half hour before Elie woke up. The little girl looked and saw her grandmother was awake. Elie hugged her grandmother tightly, "I'm so sorry, grandma. Thank you and I love you so much."
Nora hugged the little girl, "it's alright, sweetheart. I love you too and you don't have to thank me. You're my granddaughter and I would do anything for you."
"I know," the little girl said remembering what her grandfather had said the night before, "do you need grandpa?"
"Actually, I do need him to help me in the bathroom."
Elie took off and brought her grandfather back to the room. "Darling, will you be alright if Elie sleeps with us tonight and maybe other nights for the time being?" Frasier asked while his wife was washing her hands.
"If it's fine with her parents."
"The three of us sort of discussed it already," Frasier had a guilty smile on his face.
Nora chuckled, "don't feel guilty. It's perfectly fine with me."
Once Nora had finished her treatment, she was back to, well what was normal for her. She didn't really need help moving around anymore and could sometimes get away with moving short distances without her cane. The girls were beginning to find ways to have fun with their grandma. Ways that were easy for her. Nora even went back to work. One day at work the office door opened and closed without the person saying a word.
"Sam, what did Diane do now?" Nora asked without looking up.
"I didn't ask Uncle Sam if Aunt Diane did anything," Tony said causing his mother's head to bolt up, "do you want me to?"
Tony began to walk towards his mother who stood and took him into her arms, "what are you doing here?"
"I decided to visit my parents this weekend. Is that so wrong?"
"You ran out of quarters and have laundry don't you?"
"Maybe a little, but I am still excited to see you."
"Not as excited as I am to see you," Nora hugged her son again. "Come on," Nora led Tony to the couch where the two sat, "what's new with you?"
"I chose the medical field I want to specialize in."
"Really? I thought you would need some more time."
"Don't laugh," Tony warned.
"Why would I laugh?"
"I chose psychiatry. I didn't tell you both that I had switched majors because I wasn't sure I would like it."
"When did you switch?"
"Five semesters ago."
Nora chuckled, "now that I will laugh at, but why did you think I would laugh at you wanting to go into psychiatry?"
"I don't know."
"I mean I think it's great that you want to follow in your father's footsteps."
"That's not why I chose it."
"Oh, well, why did you choose it?"
"I want to be able to help people like you and me. We both tried to take our own lives because we felt we couldn't help the other and that we couldn't go on living that way. I want to be able to help others."
"I think that's wonderful," Nora said as she hugged her son.
The office door opened, "hey, dipstick! You were supposed to get us," Charlie said.
Nora stood and hugged Charlie and Henry before reclaiming her seat. Tony took the office chair and the other two joined their mother on the couch. "Alright, now that I've heard what's new with your brother, tell me what's new with you."
"We both decided on careers," Charlie said.
"That's great," Nora told her son, "can you tell me what they are?"
"I'm going to medical school to be an OBGYN," Henry said.
"That's amazing," Nora told her son.
"I decided to become a respiratory therapist."
"That sounds like a great idea."
"Are you going to tell us how you're doing?" Tony asked.
"I'm doing very well."
"That's what you always say on the phone or in messages. You do realize we talk to dad, Freddy, and Meg?" Charlie asked.
"Bunch of snitches," Nora said making her boys laugh, "okay, so I went through a pretty rough patch, but I'm fine. As long as you're in school I'm going to keep things from you if I feel they might cause you to lose focus."
"We knew and are still doing well in school," Henry remarked.
"I've always been like this and you know it."
The door opened again, "it's true," Savannah said, "why do you guys act as if she'll ever be anything else.
Nora's daughters hugged her before sitting around the office. The boys sat on the floor and the girls took seats on the couch and office chair. Nora had tears in her eyes, "mom," Lenora said.
"Sorry, I just hadn't expected to see all of you at once and I'm just overwhelmed. I'm so thrilled you are all here."
"We were all at a point with school where we could come home for the weekend," Ella said.
"We have chosen our careers too," Van added, "I decided to become a veterinarian."
"That's great and a bit unsurprising. You've always loved helping animals."
"I'm going to become a physical and speech therapist," Ella said.
"Another wonderful choice."
"Mama, would you tell us if you didn't like our choices?" Tony asked.
"No, because it's your choice. Give me credit here. I keep trying to come up with different ways to tell each of you how incredible and perfect I think your choices are," Nora smiled.
"You are doing great with so few words on hand," Charlie said.
"Careful or I'll change my mind about you," Nora teased. She turned to her youngest daughter, "so, Nori, what have you chosen?"
"I've decided to become a neurologist."
Nora became overwhelmed with emotion. She tried to keep her tears inside by smiling and nodding at her daughter. Nori smiled and hugged her mother. "I'm so proud of you. I'm proud of all of you."
"We have more," Tony said.
"Is it going to make me cry?"
"I don't know. Let's find out," Henry said.
"Once we have graduated," Lenora began, "Frederick, Tony, Charlie, Ella, and I are going to try and form our own practice. That way we can offer these services in one building."
"We even told Ella she could call herself 'doctor' so she's not left out," Tony joked.
"You do know that I will actually be a doctor?" Ella asked her brother.
"I did not know that," Tony answered.
"I think the practice is a wonderful idea. Damn it, Tony, now I'm self-conscious about praising you all."
"Way to go stupid," Charlie said.
"Mama, he called me stupid."
"And?" Nora asked making everyone laugh, "I really do love what you are all doing with your lives. I couldn't be more proud of you. I can't believe that all of my children are going to be doctors."
"Well, Ella isn't going to be a real doctor," Tony joked.
"I'll kick your ass if I have to," Ella warned her brother.
"Mama?" Tony turned to his mother.
"I kind of want to watch her kick your ass," Nora said and her children busted up laughing. "it might be funny, I mean interesting."
"He's lucky I know he's teasing," Ella remarked.
"You can't kick my ass."
"Wanna bet?"
"Look, we aren't going to fight because it's wrong," Tony said.
"Chicken," Ella joked.
"I am not afraid of you. I'm just respecting my mother and all women."
"Wuss," Nora joked.
"Why is everyone picking on me today?"
"It's just too easy, sweetheart," Nora smiled as she looked around the room as her laughing children. She remembered when they were all little and not know who or what they would grow up to be. She missed those days but was damn proud of who her children became. Not just that they were going to be doctors, but that they wanted to help people.
