"Let's get outta here..." Dean said after yet another moment of awkward silence.
"Ok, Dean..." Cas agreed, like he always did.
Starting the car, Dean looked out on the empty road. That fear that was always aching his heart was creeping up again, convincing him that the last half hour was just a figment of his imagination. But then, he felt a hand on his shoulder, and what he saw shoved that doubt back down away. They were going to be fine...they had to, because Dean was curious where this was going to go.
"So, you think my soul is sexy?" Dean grinned mischievously.
"Dean..." Cas laughed. "I'm a very honest angel, don't twist my words..."
"I'll take that as a yes..." Dean patted his chest. "You hear that? We're not a total screw-up."
"Please, don't..." Cas deflated.
"Sorry, sorry...bad joke...but seriously, what is this going to look like, you and me?" Dean wondered out loud.
"Whatever you want it to be...I've, never been in a relationship..." Cas confessed.
Dean cut his eyes to the right, then back forward to the road. "Really? Angels don't, uh, do that sort of thing?"
"Well, no, they do, it's not...common, I guess, since we're so busy..." Cas stammered.
"Ok, ok, I see, you're the shy type, of course..."
"Of course? Not to be rude, but, you didn't seem to say anything either..." Cas shot back.
"Yeah, yeah, what can I say? I'm in constant agony about relationships."
"How come?" Cas noticed Dean grow quiet without elaborating.
"Since we're Facebook official, I guess I might as well tell you..." Dean tapped the steering wheel nervously. "My Dad, he...he was a good hunter. He knew everything about anything he ever came across. Taught me and Sammy everything we know, but...he had high expectations, and I mean, high. And, me being the oldest well, it was dialed up to eleven for me. Had to be knowledgeable with every kind of weapon, had to look out for Sammy, be in tip-top shape, sharp as a whip, and..." Dean trailed off for a moment, a dark shadow looming over him, it seemed. "There was no room for errors. No weaknesses..."
"Dean, we don't have to talk about this if you don't want to...I didn't mean to bring up any painful memories..." Cas felt awful. Sure, he got hints of it here and there in passing, and when he was piecing together his soul, what made Dean Dean, but hearing this now, from his lips, it was heartbreaking. Cas came to the conclusion that Dean's father would not tolerate any time for pleasure, and that made the angel angry. Everyone deserved happiness, hunter or not. God created a day for just rest for fellowship and worship and of course, rest.
"It's fine, Cas..." Dean lied. "Sometimes it feels good to get things off my chest. I know I'm not the best at that. Just ask Sammy...anyways, let's stop here. I'm tired of driving."
"Ok, Dean..."
When Dean got out of the shower, he was met with a pleasant surprise. Cas had already made the bed back for him, and the TV was on a menu full of movies.
"I...ordered room service. Figured you were hungry. Cheeseburgers ok?" Cas asked shyly.
"Uh, yeah, yeah...that sounds perfect. Thank-you, Cas."
"You're welcome, Dean."
Dean did not know what to do. Way to make this awkward. You gotta get over yourself and stop being so self-conscious. You two literally just confessed you love to each other. That should have solved everything, right?
Luckily, a knock on the door alerted room service. Dean tried not to think about how cheap and fast the food was, but he was hungry, so one could not afford to be too picky.
Dean sat on one side of his little twin bed, silently hoping Cas would squeeze in with him so they could watch the movie together. The angel did not, and Dean's heart sank for a minute.
"You can hop on over, if, you want...I don't bite." Dean smiled as he bit into the greasy cheeseburger.
"All right, Dean." Cas took off his trench coat and squeezed next to him in the bed. Their shoulders touching spread across the entirety of the headboard. "Are you comfortable?"
"Fine, yeah, you?" Dean saw Cas nod, and they enjoyed their night, like they always did, except there was no more mystery, no more what ifs. They just openly shared each other's company, and loved every minute of it.
