Author's Note: I have no words and no excuses. My sincerest apologies for not finishing this. I previously said there were at least three chapters remaining. Here is the one immediately following Maura's encounter with Groh. I have not forgotten you, thanks for not forgetting me. Your humble Bard.
"I will not stay overnight." Maura's tone was firm but there was a hint of exhaustion that was unmistakable.
"Maura honey-" Jane tried to get her to stay on the gurney to no avail.
"No. You won't stay and neither will I."
Jane sighed. This was the third time they'd had this discussion. Maura had insisted the cut on her arm get treated before Maura's injuries. Thankfully Maura's injuries hadn't been severe. The swelling on her right cheek was responding well to the ice pack and the medication she'd been given for the pain was helping.
"I just want what's best for you Maura."
"You are what is best for me. You, our home, getting married…please don't ask me to stay." Maura's plea tugged at her heart.
A knock on the door halted her words. "Hey…okay to come in?" Emily poked her head in followed by JJ. "All good with you two?"
Jane looked at Maura and smiled. "Definitely good. Looks like we'll be heading home.
"It's finally over?" Maura took Jane's hand and squeezed.
"Looks like it." Jane gave her a broad smile and hid her apprehension down deep in her soul. There was really no way to know if it was or not. All she could do was hope and pray.
Emily raised an eyebrow at the pensive look on Jane's face. She knew that look. They would definitely have to talk later but after she and Maura got some rest.
"Korsak is finishing up some paperwork and we still have to finish up our final interviews with Wilkins and Hayes but it looks like we may be in the clear on wedding day." Emily's words brought a smile to both their faces. She was tasked with taking them home and once she did, she planned on spending some quality time with her own wife to be.
"Jane...Jane honey wake up." Maura was happy Jane felt relaxed enough to fall asleep on the ride home. It surprised her but the grip Jane had on her hand told her she played a part in that feeling of peace.
Jane stretched and tried to stifle the groan the stretch elicited. "Lord, so sore." She gave Maura a bright smile. "I fell asleep."
"You did."
"How are you feeling Maur?"
Maura gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Happy."
Emily watched the interchange and the warmth that spread through her was a welcome change. They weren't being attacked, blown up, shot...no it was finally time for a bit of peace.
"Hey you two. Knock it off now. I'm going to head back to the precinct for a meeting and then a respite for all of us."
"Six days and counting Prentiss. Think we can wrap up interviews and all by then?"
"I think Reid and Barry will be doing just that. Some of the rest of us have some recouping to do." Emily wiggled the fingers of her hand. "JJ and I have some healing to do."
"Well, we expect you both back at the house." Maura's voice was tired but firm.
"Yes ma'am."
"Jordan?"
"Hmm Querida?"
"I...I'm scared about you going undercover." Pen got the words out quickly. It had been burning a hole in her soul. She had to let Jordan know how she felt.
Jordan held her close. "I know mi amor." She considered her next words. "I plan on coming back home to you, you know that. But I need to tell you I had to fill out some paperwork the other day."
"What kind of paperwork?" Pen knew. She knew what it was and it terrified her.
"Power of attorney. Benefits. I forgot how much paperwork is involved." She kept her voice light but Pen heard the underlying strain.
"You weren't going to tell me."
"I was mi amor. Truly." Jordan turned to face her. "I know how you feel about this and I am sorry. It's my job."
Pen nodded furiously. "I know, I know...it's just...I don't know what I would do if something happened to you." She twisted the sheet in her hands. "I'm not like the others. I'm a techie, a nerd, not a cop." She swallowed her voice was much higher than she'd planned but her anxiety was coming through.
Jordan took her hands and forced Pen to look at her. "Look at me Querida. You are amazing. I knew that when I first met you. You saw more than a drag king. You saw me as me and still you've stayed."
"Of course I stayed." Pen pulled her in and hugged her tightly. "I know it's crazy and I've read all the romance books and absolutely hate reading about 'insta-love', but that's not what this was. This was different. This was a connection first with Jordan Coyote and then with Jordan Rivera. The connection just got stronger when I got to know you. That's why I'm scared. I don't want to imagine my life without you."
"Whoa...Pen, Querida, it's a simple undercover assignment. I promise I will tell you everything I can about it. I'll have back up and it shouldn't last longer than a few months. It will be okay."
"Promise?" Pen's lip quivered. She knew Jordan couldn't promise that but she needed to hear it.
"Te lo prometo."
"Hey Wonder boy, you doing okay?" Morgan shifted his arm in the sling and stifled a curse.
"I should be asking you that?"
"Hey man, we survived. That has to matter for something."
"I know it's just. Hoyt was incredibly effective with his disciples. You have to wonder if there are any left." He closed the Hoyt file and turned to his friend. "The effect he has had on Jane, on Maura since his death has been profound."
"That is an understatement buddy. Listen, put the file away and let's watch a movie. You don't have a report to file till tomorrow. Let's just appreciate the end of this nightmare and our survival."
"Agreed. What are we watching?"
Morgan pulled a dvd out of his sling. "I got it from Frankie."
"Oh goodness, The Princess Bride, really?"
"Gotta get the jokes ready for Jane and Maura's wedding. Besides, it has the best line in the movies."
They quoted in unison. "My name is Iniego Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Morgan broke first, his laughter prompting Reid.
"There you go Wonder boy. Time to relax."
Emily picked JJ up and they headed back to Maura and Jane's. Neither spoke for a while and it was the most comfortable silence they'd hadd in some time. When Emily reached over with her wrapped hand. JJ took it carefully and brought it up to her lips.
"I love you Em."
"Ti amo Jayje." Emily smiled as JJ proceeded to kiss each finger. Lingering on the ends and suckling. "Dammit JJ."
"Do you want me to stop?" JJ's now husky voice sent a thrill up Emily's spine. All she could do was keep her eyes on the road and get there. They could figure out what came next later.
Maura covered her mouth. She could hear JJ's moans of pleasure and regretted coming out for a drink. Granted, she and Jane had had their own fun when they had gotten home and had been enjoying the pleasure of each other's company without fear for the first time in a long time. The respite may be brief, but it was enough for her right now. In less than a week, she would be a married woman and that was her end goal right now. Jane was sleeping soundly after letting Maura change the dressing on her arm.
She felt the swelling on her cheek and hissed. It still hurt but she understood exactly how lucky she was. How lucky they all had been, and Paddy. She had never considered him a father but in his own way, he cared and she was grateful Jane had accepted his help. It spoke to just how much Jane loved her.
She looked at one of the extra wedding invitations laying on the counter and brought it to her chest. Soon.
