Chapter 10

Callie and Frank were sleeping in their bed a couple nights later. It was two AM and Callie sat bolt upright. She could hear her father's voice. She sobbed and covered her ears rocking. Frank felt her movements and turned on the light. He saw what was going on at once. He called his father. "Dad...sorry to wake you but Callie is having the psychosis. Can you and mom come over and watch the kids."

Frank waited until she stopped rocking.

Her body was trembling. "No! Don't want."

Frank soothed her. "I know baby you're safe honey." He helped her out of bed and helped her get dressed. He sat her on the bed. He had to go tell Brooke they were leaving. Hoping she stayed put he hurried to Brooke's room. He shook her awake.

Blurry eyed she mumbled. "What's the matter?"

"I have to take your mom to the hospital, she's." They heard a door close. Frank cursed and ran back to his bedroom. Callie wasn't on the bed where he left her. She had sought refuge in the bathroom. He tried the door but it was locked. "Callie, open the door honey."

Brooke said. "Daddy what's the matter?"

"After you were born your mother developed postpartum psychosis. She didn't have it after Ford and she wanted to have another baby. We used a surrogate with Claire but not with Josh."

Brooke said. "So mom is in crisis, on top of Claire losing a best friend and almost dying herself. This is peachy dad."

"Get my lockpicking kit out of the drawer."

Brooke went to his dresser and found the lock picks. They looked old. "Where'd you get these and why?"

"They were my grandfathers and why is because I used to be a freelance detective." Frank unlocked the bathroom door with ease. He paled when he opened the door and saw the pill bottles on the counter. It was her lorazepam and she'd taken the whole bottle as well as her bottle of antidepressant.

Frank took her by the arms and lifted her from the bathroom. She started screaming. Brooke was already calling an ambulance. "Yes my mom just swallowed a bunch of pills." She gave the dispatcher their address. "Yes she's breathing, she's screaming at my dad right now. No she isn't armed. Do you honestly think we're going to let her anywhere near any weapons?"

Fenton Hardy came upstairs. He had heard the commotion. He saw Frank trying to control his wife. He was having a hard time. Only one thing to do. Fenton could see she was trying and failing to get to Frank's gun safe. Fenton handed his gun to Brooke. "Go hide it." Then he went over and he and Frank were finally able to subdue a hysterical Callie.

Laura was holding onto a crying Brooke. Claire awakened. "What's happening?" Laura took them both downstairs.

"What happened?" Fenton asked as Callie's breathing started to slow.

"She took the pills in her ativan bottle and her paxil bottle."

Fenton called Joe. "Joe it's dad, Callie is having the psychosis she just swallowed a bunch of ativan and paxil. Yes we've called an ambulance. You're at work great."

The medics arrived on scene. They immediately put an IV in Callie's arm. Frank quickly dressed in a sweater and jeans and put on his sneakers. He was done when the medics were ready to wheel Callie down the steps. Frank went down ahead of them. He was riding in the ambulance. They hooked her up to oxygen which she immediately tried to take off. Frank took her hands. "No baby no! You need it sweetie." He could see her O2 stat well enough. It was at 85 percent. He pleaded. "Come on baby hang in there!" He prayed. Please god help her!

Joe was waiting outside for Callie's ambulance. He knew this was going to be a close call. He had already put Callie's information in the system with registration and ordered labs. The ambulance pulled up and Joe opened the back along with the respiratory therapist assigned to the ER.

The medic said. "BP is 65/40, pulse 50, respirations 10 o2 at 85% on five liters."

Joe said. "Administer 0.2 milligrams of Flumazenil. Prepare to intubate, administer activated charcoal as well."

Frank was standing off to the side and watched terrified as Callie's heart rate dropped even more. Joe ordered a medication and it rose back up. Then his gaze went to his brother. Who was barking orders. "Push the etomidate then the succinylcholine. Raise the bed." Fenton Hardy stepped into trauma 3 and immediately took Frank's hand. They both watched as Joe inserted the tube into Callie's lungs. "I'm in! Get x-ray in here! Administer another dose of flumazenil. Put her on propofol to sedate her.

Joe was watching her stats. "Come on Callie come on! Give me something."

Her pulse jumped up to 68. Joe asked. "Get her BP."

The nurse hit the button and they all held their breath. "BP is 108/60."

Joe wiped his brow. "Okay...okay. Watch her heart rate; we don't want her stats much lower than this."

He looked up at his brother who looked shattered. He approached. His father was holding onto Frank. "She's not out of the woods yet. But she has a good chance. We have to keep her blood pressure up and monitor her for toxicity."

"When will we know?" Fenton asked.

"Within the next 24 hours if she doesn't code and doesn't develop toxicity she'll be slowly awakened and weaned off the respirator. We just have to wait and see."

Callie had been the one to insist they have another baby. She wanted Ford to have a sibling close in age. Looking back he wished they had gone through a surrogate again. But she didn't want to do that. It was worth the risk. She had assured him. She trusted him to help her if the psychosis developed. He shouldn't have left the room.

Fenton seemed to read his thoughts. "Don't blame yourself son."

Frank was guided into a chair beside Callie. The machine was breathing for her. Frank simply took her hand and kissed it. "I love you Callie." He said. "Dad I went down the hall for less than a minute."

"It's not your fault." Fenton said. "Callie will say the same thing once she's feeling better."

Joe had slipped out and called Vanessa. She was going to go over to Frank and Callie's in the morning. Joe would too. But he'd get some sleep first. He sat down at the doctors station. He checked on the results of his other patients. He admitted one and discharged 2. He started working on admitting Callie. He signaled her nurse. "Make sure you tell them that she has postpartum psychosis. She'll be going to ICU 22."

Jayden the nurse nodded. "Of course Dr. Hardy."

Joe stood up and went back to trauma 3. A chair had been moved into the room for Fenton. Frank was resting his head on Callie's lap. He rubbed his brothers back. Frank's eyes opened. "Joe?"

"She's doing alright Frank. We're moving her to ICU 22 within the hour."
