Charlie, Tony, and Henry arrived home, after hanging out with some friends, and found their mother in the living room struggling.
"Mom, do you need help with something?" Charlie asked. Tony went upstairs because he had a difficult time being near his mother.
Nora looked at her sons with tears in her eyes, "your dad took a work call and I had to go to the bathroom," Nora looked down embarrassed.
"Mom, it's okay," Charlie said.
"Sorry darling that took longer than I thought," Frasier walked in and found his wife in tears and Charlie trying to comfort her. Frasier decided to ask Henry, "what's wrong?" he whispered.
"Mom had an accident," Henry whispered back.
Frasier sighed, "damn, I knew I should have just stayed in here." He walked over to his wife, "darling, I'm so sorry. I'll help you clean up." Charlie helped his mother up and held on until she had her walker. Frasier put an arm around his wife and led her to their room. He closed the door and helped Nora undress before helping her into the walk-in tub. Frasier placed a gentle kiss on Nora's forehead, "I'm sorry darling. Just relax here and I'll take care of everything." Frasier took his wife's clothes and threw them in the washer. He set an alarm on his phone so that he remembered to start the washer in twenty minutes when there would be more hot water. He went to get the cleaning supplies to clean the sofa but couldn't find them. When he walked into the living room he found Charlie and Henry already cleaning up.
"Is mom okay?" Henry asked when he noticed his father was there.
"She's upset and embarrassed, but she'll be fine. Just don't bring it up."
"When would we ever bring that up?" Charlie asked.
"I don't know, but it's just something parents tell their children about things that shouldn't be repeated. It's a reflex," he explained. Frasier went back to help his wife out of the tub and to get dressed. Henry knocked on the door, "come in," Frasier said.
"I just wanted to tell you that I started the washer for you," Henry said.
"Thank you, son," Frasier responded.
After Henry left Nora decided to speak, "what was that about?"
"The boys cleaned up the sofa and started the washer with your clothes in it. I had set a timer to remind me when there was hot water," Frasier felt his pockets, "and I must have left my phone in the kitchen and that's how they knew."
"They did all of that?"
"I know, but I guess they just love their mother," Frasier said making his wife smile.
Ray and Debra returned after five days away.
"Hey, how was the trip?" Nora asked when the couple entered the house.
"Relaxing," Debra answered. She and Ray had decided to not say much about the trip. They didn't want Nora to feel bad.
"You're really not going to tell me more?"
"It was a relaxing trip that we enjoyed like you wanted us," Ray added.
"I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe one day you can actually tell me about it," Nora said.
Frederick went over to the house one day while Frasier ran some errands. Robert, Amy, and Sam decided to go over too.
"Sam, I didn't know you were coming," Nora said happy to see her brother.
"Well, your plan includes my bar, so..."
"And I thought you were here to see me."
"Oh, yeah, that too," he smiled at her.
"Hey mama," Frederick said as he walked in with his girlfriend. He had been dating Woody and Kelly's daughter Meg for a couple of years.
"Hi, Mrs. Crane," Meg greeted her. Nora kept telling the girl she didn't have to be so formal, but she couldn't help it.
"Hi, you two," after they hugged Nora.
"So, what's the big secret?" Amy asked.
"Is it about me?" Robert inquired.
"Yeah because it's all about you," Ray said.
"Actually, it's never about me," Robert replied.
"Why don't you two just shut up and listen," Debra said.
Everyone sat and talked, "so Sam what do you say?"
"Well, it's hard for me to say no given everything you've been through. Yeah, we can do that."
Nora hugged her brother, "thank you."
"Careful, you'll hurt yourself."
Nora winced, "too late."
"You okay?" Debra asked.
"Yeah, I just moved the wrong way."
"You never learn," Ray said.
"I learn more than you."
"She's got ya there," Sam said.
It was now Frasier's birthday and Nora had a big surprise planned.
"Frasier, can we go to Cheers tonight?" Nora asked her husband.
"Did you want to go before or after dinner?"
"Before," Nora had told her husband that she wanted to take him out to dinner for his birthday.
"Sure, we better get going then."
Frasier helped his wife from the car and over to the elevator that led to Cheers. Nora was able to use her cane but needed help still. That's one of the reasons she knew he would be focused on her and wouldn't see anything else right away.
"Surprise!"
Frasier's head popped up and he saw all of their friends and family at the bar and a sign that read 'Happy 60th Birthday Frasier'. "What's all this?" he asked with a smile.
"Your wife guilted me into closing my bar for the night," Sam answered.
Frasier helped his wife down the two steps, "you planned this?"
"Of course," Nora said, "this is a big birthday and I wanted to do something nice for you."
Frasier kissed his wife, "Okay you two, get a room," Sam commented.
"How about your office?" Nora joked.
Nora sat at a table for the majority of the party. She hadn't been using her cane for very long and still tired easily. She watched as Frasier had fun and opened his gifts.
"Dad, this is from me and Meg," Frederick said as he handed his father a card.
Frasier took the card and read the front out loud, "Aww, it says 'happy birthday grandpa'," Frasier paused and looked at his son. Woody, Kelly, Lilith, and Nora had surprised looks on their faces too. Frasier opened the card and found an ultrasound picture, "seriously? No offense to everyone else, but this is the best birthday present ever!"
Woody, Kelly, Lilith, and Frasier hugged their kids while Nora watched. For the first time since meeting Frederick, Nora felt out of place. She especially felt that way when she heard Frederick tell Kelly and Lilith that they were going to be the best grandmother's. Frasier ran over to his wife, "darling, did you hear?"
Nora put on a smile because her husband was so excited, "yes, that's wonderful." Frasier kissed his wife and went back to the party.
Amy and Debra were sitting with Nora and they had realized what nobody else had. "You okay?" Amy asked.
"Why wouldn't I be?" Nora responded with.
"The man you've considered to be a son for seventeen years just announced he's going to be a father and ignored you," Debra said.
"Nora, it's okay to be upset," Amy told her.
"He has been over several times to talk to you tonight and helped you plan this. It's not like he doesn't know you're here," Debra added.
A tear fell down Nora's cheek and she looked at the opal ring on her pinky she had worn for almost eighteen years, "for the first time since I met him I feel out of place."
"You should talk to him," Debra suggested.
"I don't want to ruin Frasier's party. Besides, as much as we have tried to ignore the fact, I really am not his mother."
After they got home, Nora decided to get ready for bed. She was absolutely exhausted. Nora was still upset, but Frasier was happy and had fun and that's all she wanted.
