The next morning when Sahl was working with Boil on new techniques to fight hand to hand Cody told his General what had happened the night before in a low voice. General Kenobi was watching his Padawan carefully, and stroked his beard as the silence stretched between them after Cody finished. "Yes I sensed the sleep derivation," seeing his Commanders look, "there are strange times when her mind is slower than it should be."
Trying to understand, "But why…"
"Didn't I ask her?" the General finished for him. "Because she needs to be ready to confide, not answer on demand." Seeing General Kenobi's gentle smile, Cody tuned to see Sahl looking over at them and the General continued after she turned back to Boil, "Sahl needs to have respect that the Dark Woman never gave her in order to realize thats what she deserves."
Remembering her frightened face as she confided the nightmares and how it was like the Cadets back on Kamino whispering about the punishments they or their friends were going to face from the Longnecks, Cody nodded. But it was worse for Shal. The cadets had each other or their older brothers to turn to, she had had no one. But that was no longer true, "Does respect earn trust General?"
Kenobi looked at him surprised, "Sometimes." Feeling the understanding coming from his Commander, "Yes she will need to learn to trust, which I am trying to help her with. But she also needs to learn how she deserves to be treated by virtue of being herself."
Cody nodded, "I understand General." And the topic was left alone for the present.
