Epilogue

I'm hovering over the city listening to the sounds of people. It's peaceful up here, and the air is crisp. It's been over a year since I started developing my powers. I took the crystal to the Arctic and threw it out into the whiteness. It grew into a massive crystal structure which has become my Fortress of Solitude. I learned that I am the last survivor of a planet called Krypton that was destroyed long ago.

When I finally built up enough leave again, I spent a month in the Fortress learning about my people. The crystal was a memory bank full of information about Krypton's past, and a computer program helped me learn about my abilities on Earth. The Kryptonians were a scientific and technologically advanced people who had great cities. Though for all of their scientific and technological achievements, they did not take seriously a threat to their great society, and their downfall was due to their unwillingness to listen. I am the only survivor that I know of, and I want to make sure Earth does not make the same mistake Krypton did. Any civilization can fall, no matter how great.

During my time in the fortress, I finally learned to fly. As with all of my abilities, flight was also attached to an emotion. The thought of people looking up to me was frightening. I wasn't, and still am not sure I will be able to live up to their expectations. The thought of Lois's stories about my early attempts at rescues gave me some much-needed encouragement. It was Lois's faith in me that gave me the hope I needed, and with it, the ability to navigate the sky. I also discovered an ability to expand my lungs to a great capacity and release cold breath with a strong force. It has already come in use with putting out fires around the city.

After my abilities settled, the dreams finally ceased, and I began using them to help people. Lois has been writing about the rescues and gave me the name Superman. They have both been trying their hardest to get the scoop on my story, and I have gone to great lengths to hide my face from her and Jimmy in order to keep my life as Clark Kent. It hasn't been easy. That is all about to change tonight. I finally sent word to Lois that Superman was ready to tell his story. I'll be meeting her on her balcony for an interview. It's almost time.

I'm close to Lois's apartment, and I can hear her trip over her furniture and let out a curse. It makes me chuckle; she does the same thing at the office almost every week. Her balcony door is open and she hears me step onto her patio. "Miss Lane?" I say walking toward the door.

She comes to the door quickly with an excited smile. "Superman!"

Her smile fades and a look of puzzlement settles on her face.

"Clark?"

I knew she would recognize me. We spent too long working together.

"Hello Lois."
