Immediately, Lena inhaled deeply savoring the cold night air and took in the view of the city that she loved so much. Then she heard the door close behind her and Kara appeared next to her, leaning onto the banisters, gazing at the lights too. Lena noticed that her friend's eyes were closed.
"Are you listening?" she asked.
"Yes, but not to the sounds of the city", Kara replied, her eyes still shut.
This took Lena by surprise, "To what then?"
Again, Kara responded without opening her eyes, "To your heartbeat."
And immediately Kara chuckled, as her friend's heart rate increased and Lena blushed as she noticed this.
"My heartbeat?" Lena breathed, her own hand going to her chest and turning towards Kara.
Kara finally opened her eyes and faced Lena.
"Why?" said the CEO curiously, fidgeting with the little box in her hand.
Kara fixed her with her bright blue eyes and, although Lena had looked into those eyes many times, there was something different about Kara's gaze this time. Lena held it and Kara could hear her friend's heart beating faster than usual with curiosity and excitement.
She smiled, "Because you are so very important to me. You are my best friend. And I'd recognize your heart anywhere."
Lena wanted to say something but Kara gently cut her off by holding up a hand, "Now, for my present."
She took the little box out of Lena's hand and opened it. When Kara removed the content Lena saw that it also was a pendant on a delicate golden necklace.
"Oh Kara, this is…", Lena started, but was silenced again by Kara's raised hand.
When Lena looked confused, the Kryptonian said, "This is, much like the pendant you gave me, very special. It was given to me by my mother when I was very little. It symbolizes something very special and I wanna give it to you now", Kara finished but then added after a short pause, "if you'll accept it, that is."
Now Lena had to say something, "Kara, it's beautiful and of course I'll accept it. I don't know what to say. It was your mother's though. Are you sure?"
Yet again Kara smiled but then turned away to look up at the stars, still holding the necklace. After a moments of silence, in which Lena thought that her friend must be thinking of her lost home and her parents, Kara finally spoke.
"This was not my mother's necklace, Lena. It's always been mine until I found the right person to give it to."
Lena stared, unable to speak. What was Kara saying?
"On Krypton we have … we had a ritual. Not too many people ever got to do it because not everyone is lucky enough to find the right person", Kara continued now, turning to look at Lena.
Lena stood frozen and completely confused because Kara sounded like she was confessing her love but the Luthor knew that her friend and Mon-El were very happy together.
To be continued…
