"Mavis…" George said shakily, "It's me, George. We're colleagues at the quarry and I'm the love of your life." Mavis looked at him, dumbstruck at his revelation. Does she not remember him at all?

"Huh? Did I really fall in love with you?" She looked at Jane, "J-Jane?" Jane let out a sigh of relief but George wasn't having any of it.

"How could she remember you but not me?!" he said furiously.

"I don't know dude. You need to calm down!" Jane said. She wished she chose her words differently because what happened next literally scared the hell out of her.

"Calm down?! SHE REMEMBERS YOU AND YOU EXPECT ME TO CALM THE FUCK DOWN?!" Before Jane could reply, the background noise of the dieselworks was shattered by the sound of someone in pain.

"AAARGH!" Mavis screamed. She experienced a headache and began shuddering violently. She closed her eyes, trying to make it stop. Once she did, she opened her eyes and looked around her surroundings curiously.

"What was that all about?" George inquired.

"Maybe she's beginning to recall some of her memories." Jane suggested, "We'll come back tomorrow to take her home. I just hope she doesn't experience more of this."

Over the course of a week, Mavis had trouble remembering every worker in the quarry, even her own boss. Jane literally had to spend an hour every shift just to get Mavis to remember the names of everyone in the branch line, engines, rolling stock, and people alike. The quarry shunter has remembered a bit of everything, but still struggles to remember more recent events. In their run to Arlesburgh, Jane tried to make Mavis remember how she and George met.

"You and George met 10 years ago when he was aiming to get experience to move to mainline driving. Do you remember that Mavis?" she asked.

"Yes I do, although it's still a bit sketchy why he never left. But as to how we became a couple, that I don't remember yet." Mavis replied. Suddenly, she shuddered violently – the sensation and sound given off by the engine is like activating jake brakes. Jane gripped the throttle firmly and put Mavis on idle to prevent overrevving her engine.

"AHHH!" she wailed, then the shuddering abruptly stopped. "Damn these memories, I just wanna remember them all!"

"You alright girl?" Jane asked with a concerned tone in her voice.

"I'm fine Jackie….I mean Jane. Sorry about that." the Class 04 stuttered, feeling embarrassed at her misnaming.

"It's Janelle, but Jane will do." Jane smiled, rubbing the side of her cab to ease Mavis' tension. She continued to tell stories of George to Mavis, in hopes of regaining her memories of the man she called her love.

. . .

At Wellsworth station, George and his cousin were at the platform trainspotting. The former got bored being stuck in the house all the time, so the latter, who worked at the yard there, took him to the station platform to cure his boredom by either spotting trains or talking to friends. He was having a chat with the station master when he heard Mavis' all too familiar horn.

"No way, what's she doing here?" George spoke up. The station master peeked out onto the line and saw the Class 04 double-heading with Percy on a ready-mix concrete train.

"I think it's one of your cement trains." he suggested. A while later, Mavis and Percy stopped at the platform on a red signal. This was due to make way for a high priority train before they rejoin the main line – in this case, it's one of Frieda's Coastliner runs to Norramby. George wheeled himself towards the end of the platform, where Mavis had stopped.

"Hi there…George, is it?" Mavis stuttered, unsure if she got his name right. Her boyfriend nodded.

"Yeah, that's me my love." he said, "Are you remembering some stuff now?"

"I can't remember how we first met, but all I remember is that you and I were part of something. Something with a corn field and…a station?" Mavis replied, trying hard to remember how they became together.

"Yes! That's when we admitted our love for each other!" George smiled. The quarry shunter flinched as her head ached once again trying to remember.

"ARGH!" she raged, "I'm trying hard, really hard to remember you George. But every time I try, the memories just fade away!" Not wanting to give up on her just yet, George believed he can still make Mavis remember everything.

"I'll make you remember everything Mavis, I promise you that." he sighed, using his good arm to rub her warm engine casing; he knew how much she loved the feeling of him touching her body.

"I really hope so George," the quarry diesel sighed, "I know you and I became together. I just know it! Jane has been a massive help trying to make me recall some memories." Just then, her signal turned to green once Frieda rocketed through the station.

"Alright Mavis, we're cleared to go." Jane interrupted, before looking at George. "She'll remember everything dude, just focus on getting yourself better alright?" George bade them goodbye as the end of the train disappeared. He thought sadly as to when he will be able to get Mavis to remember all their moments together.

Just you wait, if I must make you fall in love with me for the second time, I'll take that risk. He thought.

The next day, George called Jane if she can bring Mavis to Wellsworth after her shift ended. Despite having his left arm still on a cast, he can walk with one crutch since his leg wasn't severely fractured. Against the advice from his cousin saying the wheelchair is the only way to go, George had one of his friends working at the station to assist him in the 5 minute walk from his home. Once they reached the station platform, he radioed Jane on their location. It was only 15 minutes past 7 in the evening; this is usually the time Jane's shift ends.

"Where y'all at?" he said on his handheld radio.

"Almost there, now approaching the bend." Jane replied. A few minutes later, Mavis and Jane pulled up at the platform. They weren't pulling any train behind them, running engine's light from their last stop at Elsbridge.

"Martin's not yet hunting you down girl?" George jokingly asked about Jane's husband.

"He's in overtime tonight. Besides, we're going out anyway so that's a plus." the brunette replied. Afterwards she left him with his engine to have a lengthy talk. Mavis looked nervous and George was aware of this, so he decided to talk her out calmly.

"Mavis, I know you're still having trouble remembering how we met, how we fell in love and all that. But I want you to know that I'll never leave you. I'll love you even if you don't love me back again, even if I have to redo all those things just to get you to remember how much you mean to me, my black rose." he said. Mavis was silent, however the faint blush on her cheeks meant she's beginning to recall some things.

"Umm George?" she asked, "I think there's something stuck on my nose and I can't take it off."

"Hold on." he replied, as he grabbed a towel from inside the cab. He wiped Mavis' nose when suddenly, she pressed her lips against his. The feeling that George would never experience again just sparked back to life as they kissed passionately. He felt her tongue gently prodding against his, feeling their love for each other. Once he pulled out, the BR Class 04's eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.

"I remember now, I remember everything babe!" she screamed, tears leaking from her eyes. She gave up talking and just bawled her eyes out. George crashed his lips once again, cupping Mavis' face in the process. It was tricky with the cast, but he made do with what he can do for the moment.

"I-I tried so hard, so…freaking hard to remember you!" she whimpered, "I-I thought I'll never be able to remember the things you and I shared! B-but when you kissed me, I remembered everything. I remembered how much I love you and how much you meant to my life!"

As George couldn't move his left arm, he used his right arm to give her somewhat of an embrace while whispering sweet nothings to Mavis. The Class 04 felt warm and fuzzy inside at George's physical and verbal contact – little did she realize she's leaking oil again.

"Well, that's how love works. It works in mysterious ways we cannot even imagine happening." George smiled, holding back his own tears of joy. He freed his arm out of the embrace, and stared at Jane standing at the platform, happy that her colleague's lover had regained all her memories.

"She finally remembered dude. All it took was just your unending love for her." she smiled. George shook his head in disagreement.

"No Jane, all I did was express my love for her. You initiated in helping her remember and I thank you for that girl." he said.

"It's the least I can do to help us make amends with our dark past. No more talking about that, we'll let it go." Jane added. George turned back to Mavis.

"I was ready to make you fall for me a second time, thanks to you I saved a lot of effort." he smirked, making his girl pout.

"So you'd prefer me not remember all our moments and start over again?" Mavis sighed, doing her puppy dog pout again.

"Of course not!" George chuckled, "It's all good what we have now, and I don't wanna change that." He kissed her once again. Mavis was in a state of euphoria.

"I love you so much, George." she whispered; her voice small and full of love.

"I love you too, Mavis."

"You two are too cute for words!" Jane squealed. Mavis and George gave her a death glare.

"JANE!"

. . .

It took George another two months before he ditched the casts and deemed physically fit to work again. Once he returned to the quarry for the first time since the earthquake, everyone was giving him a round of applause for his exceptional role rescuing the stranded workers during the quake.

Mr. Taylor even offered him a promotion to line training driver, which is a driver certified to train cadets wanting to drive diesel locomotives. George accepted this offer graciously, solidifying his relationship with Mavis, but now he mostly teaches cadet drivers how to drive the Class 04 diesel shunter. While most of his training course is done in-room, he particularly enjoys it when his students drive Mavis. She's also not afraid in giving her criticisms of those who've given her a test drive, oftentimes telling them how they could improve.

After a long day of training and light shunting work, George went to the office to provide feedback of the students to Mr. Taylor. Mavis waited by the yard with Jane. Since her and George were going out tonight, Mavis thought of a little surprise for him.

"Jane?" she asked.

"Yes Mavis?" Jane replied.

"Do you think I'd look pretty in makeup?" Mavis asked innocently. Jane smirked, knowing full well what the Class 04 is trying to do.

"You and George gonna go on a date tonight, aren't you?" she said.

"Maybeee…" Mavis giggled, "Yeah. Not sure where he's taking me, though."

"Well," Jane continued, "You look lovely as you are right now." Mavis blushed at the compliment. "But if you really wanna blow George's socks off tonight, I can give you a makeover!"

The quarry diesel's eyes went wide. "Really?"

"Of course! Come on, I'll take you to your shed." Jane got on board Mavis' cab and drove her towards her private shed. A half hour later, George returned to the yard to find Mavis and Jane waiting expectantly.

"What'cha think of my new look, babe?" Mavis asked flirtatiously. She had eyeliner applied, a dark shade of eye shadow matching her body, light tint on her cheeks, and her pointed lips accented with pink lipstick.

"W-wow." George was speechless. If someone told him that Mavis was, on by herself a beautiful diesel, this one's turned up by ten notches. "Y-you look lovely, Mavis."

"Thanks!" Mavis said playfully.

"Alright dude enough staring, she's all yours!" Jane added. George looked at his ex accusingly.

"You did this?"

Jane rolled her eyes. "Well, I'm the only woman who wears makeup in this quarry."

"Fair enough." He returned his attention to the Class 04, "Shall we go?"

"Yes!" Mavis replied.

George and Mavis headed to Toryreck station siding where their love story began. Like other engine-human couples, they have a certain spot along the railway where they keep on revisiting because of its significance to their relationships. After George parked Mavis right in front of the buffers, he got off and sat on the buffers, facing his girl. They started off by talking about their day of training new drivers, which they got the hang of it.

"Damn and I thought training others was easier than doing my usual jobs." George started.

"Hey, at least you get to properly teach those guys how to drive like you do!" Mavis beamed.

George studied the Class 04's makeup, courtesy of Jane. Those eyeliner streaks were similar in shape to Nia's, fluttering as she blinked; eye shadow that matched her black body; but he was struck by how nicely accented her lips are with the pink lipstick. He wanted nothing more than to kiss those lips passionately,

"You should wear makeup more often; it looks great on you." he commented.

"As much as I want to, dust would just ruin my cheek tint and eyeshadow." Mavis pointed out.

"But can you at least keep the eyeliner streaks? I know other engines have it too, but you rock them best. And tell Jane to keep that shade of lipstick – pink is definitely your color." George continued. Mavis blushed – even though her and George are together, she's still not used to his flattering compliments.

"I don't know about being the best. Nia's eyeliner is soooo on fleek, Rebecca's is too cute to resist, and don't get me started on Frieda's!" she chuckled, "That engine knows how to have on fleek eyeliner, just like most German women."

"Those three are young girls in my eyes. But a strong, feisty, woman like you deserves to look even better, though I still love you with or without makeup."

"Aww, but to be fair, you should try wearing a different set of work clothes sometime." Mavis added. George chuckled.

"I'm so blessed that you and I ended up together in the end. What Jane and I had was great but short lived, then when you stayed with me in my worst moments of my life, I knew right then you're the only one for me." he smiled. Mavis gazed at him lovingly.

"Never have I ever thought of the idea of a human falling for an engine. I always said to myself that engines love you for your physical appearance and personality. Now I don't care about appearances anymore; if someone loved me for who I was, human or engine, I'll return that love, and that's what you did for a once stone-cold hearted engine like me. You helped me feel what it's like to be loved for who I am, not just what I look or how I work." she finished. Her boyfriend advanced towards her lips and they had another make out session.

This time, instead of cupping her cheeks, George rubbed the BR Class 04's hazard striped faceplate. Mavis moaned softly, feeling the touch all over her. Her engine idled with a warm radiation flowing out of her casing vents – it was quite the intimate moment.

"I love you so much my black rose, never forget that." George gazed lovingly at his girlfriend.

"I love you too. And I won't ever forget it because I'm yours and you're mine." Mavis smiled.

The couple enjoyed each other's company and Mavis didn't care anymore what the other engines say about falling for a human. Because the only thing that matters to her is personality over physical appearances. To her, George was everything she could ever ask for the love of her life.
