Authors Note: Thank you SO much for all the amazing reviews! I hope I can keep living up to them. I will see you at the end of the chapter. :)
Chapter Eighteen
It wasn't the sweet gestures of her husband that woke her the next day rather the soft shake of the shoulder from above. Tauriel mumbled incoherently then slowly lifted herself to sitting position. The room was still dark but even in the near blackness, her elven vision saw every detail of the dwarves around her in varying degrees of wakefulness. The shadowed face of Thorin who was squatting next to her came into her eyeline as he smiled and muttered a "Time to go." She nodded, still rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "Mind if you wake those two?" Kili was still unusually asleep, what was not surprising was Fili still being completely out. She would leave him to Kili. Still, she nodded to Thorin who gave her another smile before rising to give out orders.
Leaning over her sleeping husband, Tauriel took a proffered moment to just watch him sleep. His usually animated expression set into a peaceful smile. He looked so young. Stealing a leaf from his book, she closed the distance between them and placed her lips on his. It only took a moment for him to respond as his hand slid up to her hair and pulled her close for a deep, morning, kiss. She more felt than saw the wide grin that grew across his lips as she pulled away, returning the smile with her own.
"Good morning, Meleth nin." He just hummed a response, eyes glued to her. "Time to wake up Kili. We're packing up to leave. I need you to wake Fili. Last time I tried, he threw a knife at me."
Kili's smile turned to laughter as he sat up, Tauriel moving to stand to give him room. He soon stood, passing her the blanket to fold. He turned to the last sleeping dwarf in the room and mentally worked out a quick strategy, his wife watching curiously a few steps away. Coming to a conclusion, he sent his wife a wink and dove for his brother. Fili yelped, startled awake as Kili tackled his sleeping form using his legs and arms to pin the very angry blond prince down. "Wake up brother, time to go!"
"Kili! I will kill you for that!" Laughing, Kili rose from the ground.
"See, not too bad." He sent to his wife, but stumbled as Tauriel grabbed him quickly and pulled him to her, causing Kili to nearly lose his balance, barely catching it mid fall, just as a knife went sailing past where he stood seconds before and embed itself in the doorframe behind them.
"Fili, Kili! Enough. Get working. I want everyone out of here within the hour." Thorin wasn't yelling, but with his tone, he didn't need to as the princes went about straightening and gathering for their departure.
"Do you think he will come?" Tauriel looked to Ori who had just followed her out the door on their way to the horses, and according to Dori, some ponies waited as well.
They were out just as Thorin wanted them to be. She learned in her time with the Dwarrows, to never underestimate a dwarf. They may be rowdy, boisterous, and their table manners could be considered, lacking, but at the end of the day, they preferred things clean and orderly. The hobbit hole was placed exactly as they found it, everything in its place almost as if they were never there, apart from the now empty pantry.
"I think he will." Ori just looked at her and smiled. She really was finding herself enjoying the younger dwarf.
"Naw, he won't. Tauri, my dear little sister, you need to stop seeing only the good in people. He right fainted. Mark my words, that hobbit will be sittin' on his porch smoking his pipe as the sun comes up."
"I don't only see the good in you." Fili clutched his heart in mock hurt as Tauriel crossed her arms over her chest and glared at her blond dwarven brother.
"I agree with Fili, I don't think he will come. Anyone want to make it interesting?" Nori pulled out a bag of coins as the Dwarrows took bets on the poor hobbit. Only herself, Gloin, and Ori seemed to have any faith in the halfling. Although, she did see a sly shuffle of coin from the wizard as he sent her a wink and a smile, clearly betting on his choice in burglar. She was not surprised her husband chose to bet against her, siding with his brother. They will see. Her heart knew the hobbit will be joining them.
Galaddal shifted as Maryn pranced in place excitedly, seeing Kili come towards her. The two horses were a starch contrast in personalities, Galaddal being more subdued and Maryn being as excitable as a puppy, but over time they became very close stall mates. Refusing to be parted from the other unless taken out. Kili joked they would be having a little foal one day.
Over the summer, Tauriel spent time with Kili and Fili training the horses to come on command, which Galaddal had been able to do since she raised him. It took Maryn a bit, but eventually she picked it up, and they were even able to train Thorin's shaggy horse, Rhya. Though that came with a few kicks and bites. That horse had an attitude but seemed to love Tauriel. Not too much different than her rider, Thorin, that horse. Fili often mused.
Thorin told everyone to recheck their packs, then mount up. It was time to go. For all those who did not have a horse, or were too short to comfortably sit on one, there were well enough ponies to go around. Thorin had made sure to procure a few extra to help carry some of the load. They, after all, had a long road ahead of them.
Thorin lead the group out, Tauriel held the reigns of Galaddal steady as she peered back at the house on the top of the hill. The sun was just coming over the horizon casting a glow over the shire. She knew she could not wait, especially as the dwarves in her company had already turned the corner ahead, but she felt he should be there with them.
"Amralime?" The distant holler of Kili had her sighing as she turned forward and kicked Galaddal into a canter to catch up with the group.
Kili had held back a bit waiting for her to rejoin the group along with Fili. Both sitting, well she wouldn't say patiently, but they were waiting for her. They immediately pushed forward in silence and joined the company within minutes. Which was not difficult to do since most were on ponies with smaller legs. Fili and Kili's horses, and Thorin's as well for that matter, were barely horses themselves. Each on the smaller side. Galaddal too wasn't what one would consider a large horse, though his long legs did have him standing above the rest with exception of Gandalf's horse. However, their legs were a bit longer then the ponies so they were able to make better speed then their stockier cousins.
It was Tauriel's sensitive hearing that had her calling for the company to stop. Most looked at her in confusion, others irritation. Dwalin nearly roaring his opinion on elves and the lack of right she had in stalling the company. She gave them no never mind but listened carefully.
"Wait!" There it was again. Someone was coming, and judging by the steps and the sound of its voice…Tauriel broke into a wide grin as she heard Bilbo calling for the company to stop even before he could see them.
She watched with a joyful heart as the small halfling sprinted up to their group, backpack and all, thrusting the signed contract into Balin's hands who ushered out a "Seems everything is in order." And welcomed Bilbo to the company of Thorin Oakenshield.
Thorin grumbled before ordering someone to get the hobbit a pony. Tauriel laughed as Fili and Kili took it upon themselves to lift the stuttering hobbit off the ground from their horses and lift him to one of the extra ponies, conveniently saddled. She was well packed, but Tauriel knew someone had enough hope the halfling would come to put a saddle on one of the extra mounts. Thorin grumbled an order to move on and they were off.
"Pay up." Fili looked to Tauriel, betrayed. "Awe, come on little sister. We're family!"
"Then perhaps, dear brother, next time you side with me. I do believe you BOTH owe me something." Fili grumbled as he gave his part to Nori who divided everything up and set about tossing bags of coins to the winners, including Gandalf. Tauriel tucked her own winnings into her satchel and sat smiling wide.
"Remind me to never bet against my wife again." Kili grumbled. Tauriel just sent him a smirk which turned into a laugh at the sour faces of her losing husband and brother.
"Perhaps, you two should have more faith in others, and judge them less. Some may surprise you."
Both looked incredulously at her, however, when Bilbo called for the company to stop and turn around, having forgotten…his pocket handkerchief. Tauriel just shrugged then scrunched her nose as she watched Bofur rip a piece of his unwashed tunic and toss it to Bilbo. This, her favorite two princes, found immensely amusing and soon the company was once again pushing forward.
It did not take long for Tauriel's little family to realize Bilbo was not a natural outdoorsman. More than once within just a few weeks of traveling from the Shire, Tauriel found herself trying to cool Thorin's temper and Fili and Kili were subject to her elfish ire. She still had not fully forgiven Kili from a few nights ago.
They had just stopped for the evening, Kili and Fili helping the struggling hobbit from his pony. For the most part, they were being kind to the halfling, even if they saved their snide remarks until he had left earshot. Bilbo was among the first to fall asleep, but his peaceful rest did not last long. The poor hobbit startled awake once the few dwarves around him had fallen asleep, snoring loudly.
Tauriel considered herself fortunate that Kili was an exceptionally quiet sleeper, considering the rest of the company could be heard all the way in Valinor. Excluding Fili and Thorin who too were soundless at night. So, she did not blame Bilbo for startling awake among the thunderous sounds in the company. There were still several awake into the night, and she watched quietly from beside Kili who was quietly talking to Fili sitting on his other side. She followed Bilbo with her eyes as he went to pat his pony and smuggle the plump animal an apple.
An unnatural screeching in the distance caused the small being to jump then stutter out a "what was that?" She was just about to respond when the being she loved with all her heart, opened his big, stupid, mouth. She swears, if she did not love him so much, she would sew it shut if only to give himself a reminder to think before he spoke.
"Orcs." His voice quiet with warning. Fili, catching on, chimed in "Throat cutters, there'd be dozens of them. Lowlands are crawling with them." Narrowing her eyes at her husband and brother, Tauriel stiffened and sat straight. Drawing her arms over her chest. 'What are they doing?'. She turned her eyes to Gandalf peering over at him from across the camp, then back at the clearly frightened Bilbo.
"The strike in the wee small hours, when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet. No screams. Just lots of blood." Kili then went silent, both brothers watching the fear and panic imbed itself in the hobbit before quietly laughing at the halflings expense. Tauriel had it and jumped to her feet, glaring at the two princes, grabbing her small travel messenger back and stormed past Bilbo who had seemed just realized he was being mocked. Not even getting any pleasure when she heard Thorin admonish them with a "Do you think this is funny?" She refused to look back and watch, even if seeing them get owned by Thorin would bring a sense of satisfaction. She did hear Balin take over and explain why Orcs were no laughing matter.
Tauriel, instead, found an empty log on the opposite end of the party and sat, carefully pulling her sketching journal from her bag and using the light of the still lit fire, thumbed through the various sketches to the page she needed. Much of it was filled with Kili, Fili, Dis, and Thorin. There were also a few sketches of Leotti, Hellanna, Riffi, and her favorite places in Ered Luin. She shuffled past each one, though she did pause on the sketch of Dis, imagining the telling off the boys would have gotten from her which could be worse than anything Thorin or Balin would give.
Finally, her eyes laid on the page she was looking for and she traced the lines, shadows, and shading which made up her parents. She did not remember much about Valinor itself, apart from a few passing images and all that went on in the hall of Manwe. He, as promised, allowed them to keep their memories of that time, so she was able to retain the few moments she had with her parents. The drawing was not in color, but she didn't need it to be. The red hair of her mother matched her own, as did the deep green eyes of her father.
Tauriel stopped a tear from hitting the page just as it fell from her cheek. She did not know them, how could she when orcs tore them from her as an infant. She will always be grateful for the King of Valinor to allow her to keep those few precious memories of the two elves who gave her life.
"Those are beautiful. May I ask who they are?" Tauriel was startled from her memories when Ori came and sat beside her. She could see his journal similar to her own in his hands.
"I did not know my family. This is the only image I have of my parents." Not looking up, she continued to rub her fingers over the image. "What happened to them, if I may ask?" She did look up at this, and after looking at him for a moment, looked off into the distance towards where the sounds had originated moments ago.
"Orcs." Her voice echoed the darkness of Kili's a moment ago, only for different reasons. Her husband was not naturally insensitive he just simply enjoyed teasing, and she knew it was only a matter of minutes if that before he sought her out, though she wished he would just stay over there. She was not ready to give into those big brown eyes and much too charming smile. She was frustrated with him and that's how she was going to stay until he got it into his thick, dwarven, skull to think about what he says.
Ori remained quiet, watching her intently. Tauriel sighed. "I only know what I have been told. We were returning from a trade with a neighboring town. I was supposed to not have been born for another month, but I came early so my mother gave birth to me on their short travels. When they neared the forest upon returning, the small company was ambushed. My mother hid me among the wares inside a crate. Somehow, I was never found but every elf in the group was killed. They left none alive, and many were taken back and consumed." Ori looked sadly at the elf beside him, unsure of what to say as she finished her tale "I was found by the king's son, Legolas. He brought me, days old, to the palace where I remained ever since."
She felt a hand cover her trembling ones and looked over to see Thorin peering over at her concerned from his position just before her. He seemed to understand when he saw the image sketched in the journal resting on her lap. It did not matter she had no memory of the incident, or that she had come to terms with what had happened long ago. It still burned her inside when she thought of the painful story, even if she felt some detachment having been too young to retain memories. Perhaps that was for the best.
"He seems to forget sometimes his words have ramifications. The foolish boy. He knows nothing of what he speaks of. Neither of them do." Tauriel looked back down at her parents smiling at her. Kili did not mean to hurt her. But she was still irritated at him none the less. "Are you alright?" She felt herself nod slowly at Thorin's inquiry.
"In truth, I do not know how to feel. I wonder much on what my life would have been if they lived. Who I would become. Each time my mind comes to the same conclusion though. That life would have been a lie, and I would be enveloped with a deep sense of fear." She turned her eyes up to Thorin, glancing back at Ori for a quick moment who seemed to be listening intently. She knew she could not give all details, but this was not going to cause suspicion. "Fear I would have never met Kili."
Thorin smiled, nodding his head. He heard his name and stood to go join the group across the camp. "I am sorry. I cannot imagine having lost my family." She looked back over at Ori who was looking sympathetically at the elf beside him. In desperate need of a distraction, she closed her book and turned herself more towards the young dwarf and inclined her head to the book he held. "Do you draw Ori?"
The Dwarf blushed, and held tighter to the book in his lap, before sheepishly lifting it to her. "May I see your other drawings, Tauri?" Ori was the first outside the party she knew to adopt Fili's nickname he had given her the first day in Ered Luin, the same nickname most dwarves called her by with exception of a few who used her full name. It made her feel accepted, in truth. Tauriel nodded and they traded books.
"Ori, these are magnificent! You are very talented." Ori had many sketches of the party, herself included, as well as the terrain and plants, trees and all manner of blooms. He even had much of the foliage labeled and the few he did not, Tauriel was able to fill him in on what she knew but told him he was brilliant for knowing as much as he did. His cheeks burned bright red, but he beamed at her praise. Ushering his own astonishment at the sketches in her book. The two sat together for quite some time trading stories of the various sketches they came across in each-others journals.
Eventually, Ori excused himself to sleep, uttering a goodnight as he yawned and went to join his brother near the fire, leaving her alone in her thoughts.
She did not need to look to know Kili had easily slipped into the spot Ori had just vacated. He sat quietly for a few minutes before turning to her. "I am sorry, Tauriel. I was not thinking."
"No, you were not." She was not ready to hear his apology, nor was she ready to easily forgive him. At least not tonight. "Kili, go get some sleep. I am taking watch tonight. Go. Rest." She did not wait for him to respond, just stood and moved to walk away. "You need rest too. I will join you for watch. Please, Tauriel."
However, Tauriel just shook her head. "Not nearly as much as you dwarf. Now go. I will speak to you in the morning." Kili narrowed his eyes at her then turned on his heals muttering about frustrating females, frustrating ELVISH females, as he went to join his brother. She refused to watch him walk back err she change her mind, so instead she went to find a place to keep a look out.
Tauriel was not the only one keeping watch for the night. Dwalin sat across the camp from her, sharpening his axe and occasionally peering into the forest. Things had not gotten any better with the large dwarf, even with Thorin and Balin attesting to her honor and trustworthiness. It actually had an adverse effect, causing him to distrust and dislike her even more. This was going to be a long night. She tuned into the sounds of the forest nearby and settled herself near Galaddal's feet, the dappled grey horse affectionately nuzzling her shoulder as she sat. She looked over the plains, scanning, as she allowed her frustration with two dwarven princes settle in another place in her mind so she can focus on her duty while making sure the axe in Dwalin's hands, stays in Dwalin's hands. She could feel his glare burning into her from across camp. Wrapping her arms around her knees, she settled in for a long watch.
If Tauriel had thought the next day would be any better, she was most amiably mistaken. Not only had her pride not allowed her to resolve her frustrations with Kili or Fili, Fili was just as much to blame in her mind, but just moments into beginning the days ride the skies opened and a torrential rain showered mercilessly down onto the company. Soaking them to the bone within minutes.
Tauriel heard Dori from just ahead of her inquire about Gandalf being able to stop the rain. She listened intently as he declared the rain will stop, when the rain is done. If she was being honest with herself, she half hoped he would have been able to put an end to the deluge storming down on them. She hated being wet. Her hair and clothes stuck uncomfortably to her form and she was getting cold. Not that she would announce any of that.
She looked behind her at the group trailing, most dwarves had their heads bowed trying to keep the water from their eyes, Kili and Fili had their hoods up, neither looking at anywhere but the path in-front of them. Both had attempted to speak to her before they left, Kili with another apology, Fili with his jokes which where his way of apologizing, but she just waved them both off. It has only been one day, barely that, and they are just paces from her, yet she misses them both.
Tauriel let out a huff in frustration. She is not even sure anymore why she is so angry with them. Her annoyance with herself surged when she thought about the missed opportunity to ride with Kili. She still would be soaked, but at least his internal furnace would keep her warm. She shivered a bit. "Aren't elves supposed to be impervious to the cold?" Tauriel startled as Dwalin came up beside her, eyes glaring coldly.
"No. We are just taught to hide it. We can freeze like any other. Though I have been told we can tolerate it for longer than humans." He eyed her for a moment, then without so much a word back, kicked his pony ahead. Tauriel looked down at her shivering hands. Elves had many things they were considered superior in. First and foremost, they lived longer. Infinitely if they were careful or skilled in combat. They rarely got sick, their ability to heal was much more improved than mortals, they were highly in tune with their bodies, and they had superior senses in sight and hearing. Some, like Tauriel, even had gifts, such as Thranduil's sight and Galadriel's glass. Tauriel had her own gift with healing, which she could call on when needed though not without depleting much of her own energy. Even more so now without her immortality.
Looking down, Tauriel studied the narrow fingers on her thin hand. Even now, as a mortal, she retained all her elven 'superiorities' apart from the longevity of life. Though some were a bit diminished. She took longer to heal her shoulder wound than she normally would have. It took five days to fully heal rather than the normal two days for a wound as severe as that was. She also tends to sleep a bit more now. Though she still can go a few days without sleep, that is about her limit. She used to be able to stay awake for a week when necessary. She does not think she can make it that long even if she tried. In truth, she felt wasn't much of an elf anymore. Neither was she dwarf. What exactly was she? Tauriel frowned, her thoughts were taking her nowhere good.
"You know, if you keep frowning like that you will turn into Dwalin." A smile spread across Tauriel's lips. She looked up to see her husband's twinkling eyes. The brown just visible through the shadows cast by his sopping hood. He gave her a partial smile, one that did not quite reach his eyes before he pushed forward. It took a moment before Tauriel realized in her ponderings she had actually stopped Galaddal. With a sigh, she kicked him back into pace with the group.
"He's punishing himself you know." She knew. Kili had apologized already, but not once since has he sought her out or attempted to coddle up to her. He just kept a wary distance and did whatever Thorin had him do. She figures he is also making amends for upsetting Thorin, or maybe upsetting wasn't the right word. Disappointing him? She isn't sure that was it either. Tauriel looked over at Fili. It had only been a day and she missed him. Yet for some reason, she could not bridge this gap she fears she created. Tauriel was stuck on the edge of a bottomless ravine, watching Kili walk away into the shadows on the opposite side, the ability to stop him within her power, but instead she sat frozen in place watching him disappear.
As if he was frustrated with her too, Fili looked at her for maybe a moment more before speeding up ahead to join Kili. For the first time in a year Tauriel felt alone. She was not about to cry though, neither would she allow her hurt to show. Eventually, they will work it out. She hopes. Brushing the stringing wet hair from her face she rubbed her temples where a headache had settled behind her eyes. A headache. Elves do not get headaches. Yet here she is, dealing with something akin to a hammer striking an anvil in her head. Hammer and anvil, she even thought in dwarven terms. Another sign she isn't an elf anymore. Who's heard of that? An elf with both a headache and an identity crisis.
Seeing how it was getting her nowhere, Tauriel pushed all her thoughts aside and instead pulled her pride forward and took up her own place at the rear of the group. That was where she spent the remainder of the day, not saying a word. She found the quieter she was, the less they noticed her. Almost made her feel invisible. Not even Fili noticed she had skipped two meals. She could not eat, her stomach was too twisted. So when they passed her her breakfast and lunch portions, she just underhanded it to Bombur who never questioned food being passed his way. Forget standing on a ravine, Tauriel was tumbling deeper and deeper into the dark depths below and she did not know how or what to do to pull herself out.
Kili looked back at his elf near the back, she barely looked at him the last day. He knew she must still be angry with him, he was still angry with himself, though he tried to just push it away. Fili told him to just give her space and let her work through it herself but that seems to be only making it worse. "Fi, I just don't think letting her stew is actually a good thing." Fili just looked at his brother unimpressed. "Yer brother's right lad, sometimes ya gotta let she-folk figure it out. Give em space."
"Bofur's right. I remember when me wife was with Gimlee. It was steer clear, or lose a limb." Gloin laughed at his own memory, missing Bofur's eyes widen as he shot a look to Tauriel in the back and then to Kili. "Tauri is having a wee one?"
Kili so surprised by the statement, began choking on his own breath and it took him several minutes before he could sputter out "What!? No!"
"Ya sure lad?" Kili nodded emphatically at Gloin who looked skeptical. "She has control over that kinda stuff, and said she would know almost instantly if and when it happened. We both decided it would be best to wait to have children until this quest was well over." He was going to say it out loud, but he did feel a small bit of disappointment. He loved children, and could not wait to have some of his own. However, he also knew Tauriel was right. With impending death in their near futures, maybe it was best to hold off on children and just enjoy each other.
Not that they were enjoying each other at the time being. "Awe Ki, stop brooding. You two will be back to your sickeningly sweet couple-y self before you know it and we will all have to deal with it." Kili just turned his brooding glare at his brother. His response was interrupted by Thorin, who had called out that it was time to camp. The rain had finally stopped a few hours ago, leaving the dwarves, wizard, and elf damp but no longer soaking.
Kili took in the surroundings and began going about unsaddling Maryn who was nuzzling her nose into his bag looking for food. "You won't find what your looking for love. Nothing tasty in there I am afraid, you will have to wait." Unperturbed she continued to look but finally stopped when her search came up fruitless. He really needed to go talk to Tauriel. Kili did not think he could go another night without her by his side. He wonders if their relationship is straining from it's lack of alone time, but waived that off. They lived with his family for nearly a year and never had problems with that.
Plus, any time he tried to get her alone on this trek over the last month has ended in disaster. They've been interrupted by dwarves, wildlife, and even the elements. No matter how Kili planned it, any time with his wife was interrupted within minutes. Well, he pondered, guess that is where his own frustrations were stemming from. Truth was, intimacy aside, he really just missed being beside her. Maybe it has been enough time.
Kili looped Maryn's reigns around what looked like a ruined fence post and turned to go find his one. Unfortunately, he was immediately given a task from Thorin to join Fili in watching the ponies and Thorin did not appear to be in the mood for argument from his nephew. Sighing deeply, he re-grabbed Maryn's reigns and stomped towards Fili who was rounding up the horses and ponies. Looking over his shoulder, he could see Thorin arguing with Gandalf who seemed to have about had it and was storming off. Kili's heart dropped though when his wife called for the wizard to stop and ended up following him away from the camp. He knew she would come back, he just wished she would come back to him.
Perhaps it was his own frustration or personal amusement that had Kili sending an unsuspecting hobbit to find the ponies he and his brother had lost several hours later. More stolen than lost, by a few very large trolls. Thorin was going to kill them. Fili was attempting to keep Kili's mind off his wondering wife and brought the pipes out, he swears they were only distracted for minutes. Well. It may have been a little bit more than that. No matter, they had a burglar and he was fairly certain he and his brother could take on a few stupid mountain trolls. He just needed the small hobbit to sneak around them and release their mounts so they wouldn't need to get the others involved in a fight.
Of course, he should have figured the way his day was going, he would not have any of that luck. How was this hobbit expecting to sneak past a dragon when he can't even go by some idiot mountain trolls without being caught! Within minutes…minutes….of being in the troll camp, he was dangling high in the air, upside down, held by the large fist of one of the massive trolls. Makers beard, Kili was going to have to intervene. Well, here's a good way to get his frustrations out. Giving the signal to his brother to get help, he drew his sword and stepped into the encampment slicing and slashing at the trolls legs before demanding they "Drop him!" Which, they did. Throwing the hobbit directly at Kili with a force which knocked him to the ground.
As always, he could count on his brother and his ability to have perfect timing. As Bilbo sailed into Kili, Thorin and the company leapt through bushes and into battle with the three large mountain trolls. They had the upper hand for much of the fight, Kili feeling the adrenalin pump through his system as he threw himself into the skirmish. He only stopped when he noticed Thorin and several others looking up, freezing in place. Kili whipped his head in the direction of their gaze. Oh. Great mahal.
"Bilbo!" Thorin's arms stopped him in his place as he glared up at the three trolls, holding Bilbo high in the air his limbs held out as if he was about to be drawn and quartered. The trolls, having the upper ground, demanded the dwarves drop their weapons. Not having any other option, Thorin stuck his blade in the dirt. Kili looked at his uncle in disbelief before leveling his dark glare at the large beings and threw his sword to the ground.
Like potatoes, half of the company was forced into bags, Bilbo included. The other half was tied to a spit where it was placed over the fire to be cooked whole. He wanted a distraction from the distance with his wife, but he did not mean this kind of distraction. It didn't seem like things were going to end well here, and he knew his life ending meant her life ending. He hoped she would eventually forgive him in the halls of Mandos unless there was a miracle and they lived through this. Oh great. Kili thought, and now Bilbo is babbling to the half-wit trolls about the dwarves being infested with…wait…did he say they had parasites!? If this was going to be the way he was going to die, he would feel the shame of it for eternity.
Tauriel had thought going with Gandalf would have been a good distraction and break from the 13 other males. Instead, she was stuck listening to him speak about his frustrations with the dwarf who has become like a father to her. It did not take long for the wizard to get frustrated with her as she took up defense of Thorin. "Tauriel, you cannot possibly side with that stubborn dwarf. You know your people are the only ones who have the knowledge we need to read that map. You of all should know this!" He tried again to get her to see his reason.
"They are no longer my people, Mithrandir, they stopped being my people when they put me up for execution for a choice I was free to make for myself. My people are a settlement of Dwarrow, my family, their king." Gandalf looked frustrated as he looked off into the distance. They had been walking for a ways. Tauriel sighed. "I will try and speak to him. I cannot promise it will change his mind, but perhaps I can do something." The wizard was looking at something in the distance but a slight bow of his head gave her indication he heard her.
They continued on. Tauriel had lost track of the time at some point and both her and Gandalf decided they had traveled far enough ahead and turned back the way they came. Something was gnawing at Tauriel's insides. There was an uncomfortable pulsing, or stabbing sensation in the place she was connected to Kili. The connection always baffled her. It wasn't as if she could read his thoughts or feelings, it was more like she could sense his lifeforce, his very being. Usually it was a deep warmth, sitting quietly in the deep recess of her mind where that spark of immortality once resided. Though, at the moment, it seemed to be flaring up. "We need to turn around." She muttered at first.
"I think we should hurry, Mithrandir." Not even looking at the wizard beside her, she quickened her pace. Her feelings told her Kili was in trouble. What else could it be? The wizard could handle himself, Tauriel knew this, so she did not feel an ounce of regret when she pushed herself into a full sprint. 'I'm coming Kili.' She thought to the agitated connection. She knew it would not send anything to her love, but she would spend the distance getting to him, trying to send it.
She could smell the trolls before she saw them. She knew exactly what they were. They would occasionally wonder into the forest realm at night and more than once, she had to take a team to deal with the situation. Jumping into one of the trees she leapt across branches until she was peering into the small encampment where several of her company were roasting over the fire and her family, husband included, were bagged and….yelling out that they were riddled with parasites? This was not exactly what she was expecting.
She really wishes she did not leave her bow back at camp. All she had on her was her daggers at her hip. Still, she thought as the trolls looked as if they were done with games. Nothing for it. Pulling her blade she was about to leap from the tree when Mithrandir's voice echoed through the air.
"The dawn will take you all!" It shouted before he split the rock he stood on in two causing the sun just rising to spill into the camp and turn the three massive trolls into stone.
Not even waiting for them to go lifeless, she jumped to the ground and ran to the dwarves on the spit. She threw water on the fire from a bucket nearby and then turned to use her daggers to release Bilbo passing him one of her knives before sending him to help the others out of their confinements. She could see Kili watching her as he struggled to free himself to no success. One by one, she worked her way to her husband and Thorin at the back of the pile. She released Kili, then directly turned and released Thorin who muttered a thankyou before going to help get everyone else down from the spit.
Before he could go help his uncle, Tauriel reached and grabbed onto Kili's arm. "Wait!" He turned, those deep brown eyes she loved so much looking up into her own. "Kili. I." She what. She was sorry? She missed him? She does not have a clue what is going on with her and it's scaring her? How does she tell him? Where does she even start?
Kili looked over his shoulder at the group who was now gathering their things the trolls had taken before stringing them up and bagging them. Over coats, weapons, and such. Realizing they had everything handled, her turned back to his wife who seemed to be going through some internal turmoil.
"Amralime. It's alright." Before he could say more she was shaking her head but threw herself into him. Kili did not even falter for a moment before wrapping his arms around her and rocking her back and forth. "Kili, it's not alright. I am not alright. I do not even know what is wrong with me, nor do I know how to even relay it!" With each statement her voice nearly muffled in the beginning by his shoulder, grew more and more flustered as her arms tightened almost painfully around the dark haired dwarven prince. It was if he had become the anker to her ship being tossed at sea.
Kili let her just hold onto him tightly for a few minutes, turning his head so his nose nuzzled her hair and his lips grazed the shell of her ear as he whispered sweet endearments to her, trying to calm her. In time, it worked and she pulled away looking into his eyes. She leaned forward and placed a kiss on his brow, then his cheeks. His eyes closed, and he felt her smile as her lips trailed a kiss from his jaw to the corner of his lips, or, that's where it would have landed if he didn't turn his head just enough to capture her lips with his own, kissing her deeply and fully before pulling away.
He let a soft smile stretch across his face as he ran his hand along her cheek then gently swept one of her family braids behind her ear, placing a lingering, openmouthed kiss where the braid once sat against her cheek. Tauriel hummed in contentment. She missed the time alone with Kili. Maybe that was part of her problem. She would have to figure out a way to steel him away soon. Until then, however, she knew what she could do was talk to him. It was her mistake in the first place not to come to him sooner.
Resting her forehead against his, she closed her eyes and just stayed in the moment. "Tauri, Kili, I think you two should come see this." Fili almost sounded apologetic when he called over to them. Tauriel just pushed her forehead to Kili's for another second and pecked his lips before running her hand down his arm and entwining their fingers. Fili was standing a ways off, but looked at the pair with a smile and turned to lead them to an opening to a cave.
Kili used his free arm to cover his nose and Tauriel bit back a cough of disgust when the putrid and pungent smell of the cave overtook her senses. They heard Gandalf explain this was a troll hoard. That explains the smell, Tauriel thought. She looked around at the jewels and gems scattered around and could not stop the laugh of amusement when Gloin, Nori, and Bofur were digging a hole to burry some for when they can return. Gloing exclaiming to a skeptical looking Dwalin "We're makin' a long-term deposit." Dwalin just rolled his eyes
Tauriel, Kili, and Fili turned to Thorin who had found some blades, picking them up and unsheathing the large sword after passing one to Gandalf. Thorin, as a master of the forge back in Ered Luin immediately observed the swords as not being made by the likes of any troll, and Gandalf adding in that neither were they made by the likes of men. Tauriel's eyes widened as she recognized many of the details similar to her own daggers. These were elvish blades.
However, before she could relay the information, Gandalf had already launched into an explanation on where they originated from, the high elves in Gondolon during the first age. Thorin just eyed the blade and its craftsmanship. Normally, this news would have disgusted him, but having an elf in the family softened him a bit, not that he would ever say that out loud. He turned to his niece and passed her the blade.
Dropping Kili's hand Tauriel reached for the sword, Dwalin growling a warning behind her but she just ignored him. It was getting easier and easier to do these days. Tauriel inspected the sword, it was much older than her, than many she knew. Still, it was beautiful and as Gandalf mentioned, one of the finest blades any could ask for.
"I think this is much more suited to you. I do not believe I could do it justice." She passed Thorin back the blade, then peaked over his shoulder where two identical twin blades larger than her daggers but smaller than a sword peaked out. Tauriel pulled them from the cobwebs and smiled. "Now these are much more me." The blades were attached to a harness to be worn on her back, which conveniently had a place for bow and quiver. Elves, she was thankful for, no matter what they trained in be it dagger, sword, or twin blades, always mastered the bow. She had trained for years with Legolas on daggers and twin blades. Her daggers were large and menacing, but these twin swords would be a nice addition to her person.
Thorin watched her clean off both blades before Kili stepped up to help her adjust the harness and strap them to her back. Her daggers still firm at her side since Bilbo had passed the one back to her just before entering the cave. Thorin adjusted his grip on his new sword and having had enough of the smell ordered everyone to move out, Kili, Fili, and Tauriel following closely behind.
As everyone gathered outside the cave, each breathing a breath of fresh clean air, Tauriel noticed Mithrandir summoning the little hobbit over and presenting him a small elvish blade. Barely larger than her own daggers. She smiled at the wizards kindness towards the small being. He did need something to defend himself with, if their recent skirmish with trolls was any indication. This was not going to be a safe trip in the least. She sighed and turned back to Kili and Fili, both admiring her new blades she had handed each of them upon exiting the hoard.
"Something's coming!" Tauriel, Kili, and Fili whipped their heads around in the direction of Thorin's call. The boys gave Tauriel her blades which she held firmly in her grip as Kili and Fili both drew their swords as they followed the company armed and ready.
Ready for the fight she missed with the trolls, Tauriel scoped the landslide for signs of enemies. It couldn't be more trolls, they could not survive in the daylight. Her ears picked up something coming and she turned towards the sound. "What do you hear?" Thorin stood, his new blade at the ready as he noticed her crane her head towards the sound.
"I cannot be sure, but something is coming and fast."
"Arm yourselves and be ready." Thorin called as the company, Gandalf included, now stood staring into the direction she had indicated. It was not much longer when thirteen dwarves, a hobbit, and Gandalf picked up what Tauriel had heard and even less time before a voice accompanied the running.
"Thieves! Fire! Murder!" Echoed through the forest before something akin to a sleigh being pulled by large rabbits. "Well, now I've seen everything." Fili muttered from beside Tauriel, though he still had not relaxed his stance. Her eyes remained on the odd man who just came to a stop before them. It wasn't until Gandalf exclaimed "Radagast! Radagast the brown!" that she heard the sheathing of swords around her as the company relaxed. So, this was one of the few other allusive wizards. Gandalf had mentioned them a few days ago though she could not recall much of the conversation. Her mind had been on other things.
Turning to look at her husband and Fili directly behind her, she was highly amused at their twin disgusted faces as they watched the brown wizard pull a stick insect from his mouth. "Well, some like greens, others, insects. Don't judge you two." She laughed in their ears. Fili just looked up at her and snarled out a hushed "Really?! Did you see what he just pulled from his tongue?!" Kili laughed "I have seen worse come from your mouth brother!" as the trio watched the two wizards go off to speak privately.
Glancing around the company, Tauriel noticed Thorin and Dwalin entering what appeared to be turning into a heated debate as Balin stood trying to cool the blaze. She sighed as she heard her name and "elves" being muttered as more a slur than anything else. She was glad Kili couldn't hear some of the things Dwalin was saying or she would have to hold him back. If she was honest with herself though, she doesn't think she would put too much effort in constraining her husband.
Not caring if it was proper or not, she walked over to stand beside Thorin, who was pinching the bridge of his nose as Dwalin shot out "You cannot see it Thorin! She is bewitching the company. Don't you think it was an interesting coincidence the elf was gone at the time of the attack, then miraculously returned when it was over? Your blind Thorin. She has you too far under her spell and I am the only one to see it."
He did not even seem to care she had walked up, just turned his dark scowl to the elf who stepped up to them, a grumbling growl sounding from his chest. She felt something brush her shoulder, her peripheral vision showing Kili standing tense beside Fili who was standing with his arms folded over his chest and a dangerous look on his face.
"Mister Dwalin, I have told you before and I will tell you again. I do not have the ability to perform such things on even one person let alone a group of 15, including a wizard." It was beyond frustrating considering no matter how often she told the large dwarf that she harnessed no such magic or abilities he still treated her as a scourge to the company. It not only upset Fili and Kili but also put a deep strain on Thorin's relationship with Dwalin.
She never made the connection upon meeting him, but both Thorin and Balin had told stories of the warrior who stood by his king in battle time and time again. Kili had even said Dwalin helped raise him as a dwarfling and both he and his brother looked up to Dwalin with nothing short of hero worship. Though his attitude towards Tauriel was beginning to taint those experiences to Kili. Tauriel would just tell him it will pass over time and to not let his memories be clouded. Kili would just tell her she is the better person and refuses to speak more on it.
Under his breath, Dwalin muttered "The elf witch is after the throne, mark my words." The statement clearly meant for Thorin as a warning, however, Tauriel was the one to lash out. "I do not want a throne! I want nothing from anyone except that which they gave to me freely. A home and a family." Unfortunately, her mistake was her rapid response as Dwalin had been speaking Khuzdul, which is also the language she answered in out of pure habit. Tauriel closed her eyes realizing her mistake too late. Balin had warned her, warned her to not let Dwalin know she knew the secret language until he had warmed to her.
Dwalin, as his brother had suspected would, went rigid, then murder crossed his features. "What did you say elf-witch." The dwarven warrior stepped forward but was waylaid by three Durin's who moved to stand in-front of the red haired elf. Thorin front and center nearly blocking her from sight if not for the few inches she had over them. "Don't, Dwalin. I will not repeat myself again. Tauriel is a member of my family whether you accept that or not. Please, my friend, do not do something you will grow to regret."
Thorin said nothing more as he watched the angry dwarf turn and stalk away. There was a collective sigh that went through the group. "Don't mind him lass, he's not forgiven Thranduil and his people. There is much prejudice he must overcome. Give him time." He looked to the three other Dwarrows, then turned to find Dwalin leaving her alone with her family.
"Forgive me Thorin, it just came out before I could think. I should have been more cautious with my words." Thorin just looked at her then shook his head. "No. It isn't you. He was bound to find out sooner or later. Best we just get it over with." He sat down massaging his temples.
"I just can't believe he still thinks Tauri is some sort of elven enchantress. Cooking up spells and brews to fog our minds and win us over. I mean, has he even seen her in a kitchen?" Tauriel threw a pinecone at Fili. "I burned the rolls one time, and how was I to know you changed the sugar container out with salt." In a very un-elflike manner, Tauriel huffed and pouted as she glowered at Fili across from her.
Kili was not getting into this one. He just got some harmony back with his wife. He also did not want to mention that although his wife was incredibly skilled at many, many things, cooking was not among them. She did help Dis prepare many of their meals, but his mam learned quickly not to let the elf cook if she planned on keeping her kitchen and setting something edible on the table. She was good at catching the food though and could easily clean and roast over an open fire, but that is where her cooking skills ended. He held his smile to himself as to not upset his still sensitive wife and instead placed his arm around her waist and leaned around her to speak with his uncle.
"What's the plan from here? It looks as if the two wizards are speaking still. Are we to wait?"
"Gandalf wants me to take us to see the elves of Rivendell. Insists an elf, Elrond, could read the map." Thorin did not look convinced and Tauriel could feel the apprehension coming from the dwarven king.
"Mithrandir is not wrong. I have heard many great things about Lord Elrond. It was he whom my friend Legolas want me to seek shelter with. Said he was kind and compassionate." She looked around at the group, each giving her a different look. Kili she could read best looked as if he was pondering on what it would have been like if she had taken that path. To sooth him, she leaned down the small gap between them and kissed his temple, whispering in his ear. "I am here meleth nin, please put your ponderings away. I did not choose that path."
"Have you met this Lord Tauri? Can he be trusted?" Fili was looking over at her, his chin resting on his hand as he sat hunched forward.
Tauriel shook her head though. Her beads at the bottom of her braids tinkling in her ear, "I have not. Though his kindness is well known as is his wisdom and knowledge. I do believe he would be one of the only beings in middle earth who could read the map."
It was not her decision, nor Kili and Fili's. The choice laid heavily on the shoulders of one, Thorin Oakenshield. He peered over at Tauriel who now sat quietly. He exhaled loudly. "I never thought there would ever be a day I would welcome an elf through the gates of my kingdom, let alone welcome one with open arms into my family." He looked up at Tauriel. "If you believe this Lord Elrond could help, I will speak to Gandalf about seeking an audience with him in Rivendell. I have been wrong once, let us hope this elf is as trustworthy as our own." Thorin looked as if he was about to say more but was interrupted by a distant howl.
Tauriel heard Bilbo ask if it came from a wolf. "A wolf? No. no, that is not a wolf." The answer coming from Bofur beside the hobbit, and itself was not what put Tauriel on guard, more the fear behind the answer. She rarely heard Bofur stutter. Instantly, she pulled her blades out just as a massive creature leapt through the brush right towards Tauriel. Thorin lunged forward just in time to impale and down the beast. Kili's quick reflexes took another out who was running in from the opposite direction using his bow, Dwalin dealing the final blow.
"Warg scouts!" Thorin yelled. "Which means an orc pack is not far behind."
Tauriel could hear Bilbo exclaim "orc pack?" before Gandalf questioned Thorin about who he told beyond his kin of their quest. Thorin swearing back he had told no one.
"We have to get out of here!" Dwalin shot out, not before leveling a dark look at Tauriel which seemed to scream she had something to do with this. Ori came running from over the hill stating the ponies had run off. Tauriel knew she could call Galaddal, in fact a whistle would bring all four of the horses their way but with the impending threat, she thought it best they stay a safe distance away. The horses were smart, they would be fine.
Radagast was the one to come forward with a "I'll draw them off!" Gandalf declaring them to be Gundabad wargs, but Radagast stood firm proclaiming he would like to see them outrun his Rhosgobel rabbits before hopping on and racing away. From the sound of it, the wargs taking the bait.
With the way clear, the company all began to run with Gandalf in the lead. Tauriel pulling her bow at the ready beside Kili as they took up the rear, as the company flew from the forest and out into the rocky plain. Tauriel could see the line of wargs and orcs chasing the brown wizard who has giving them a good run. They were staying close, rushing from boulder to boulder. Thorin grabbed Ori just as he went to run into the open just as wargs crossed their path.
Tauriel stood between Fili and Kili as Thorin silenced them. One of the orcs astride a warg realized they may have been pulled on a false chase and turned towards the fleeing company. Just as he was climbing the rock, Thorin silently turned to Kili and Tauriel, his eyes indicating to their bows both had in hand then signaling his head to the orc on the rock above them. Getting the idea, Kili lifted his bow and silently drew his arrow before letting it fly. It hit the orc dead on, while a second arrow simultaneously downed the warg. Kili turned to his wife with a smile as she was pulling and knocking another arrow.
It was too late though; the orcs were coming and fast. "Run!" Thorin yelled. Once again, the company was flying through the tall yellow grass. Tauriel heard Kili from beside her scream "They are coming!" She turned her head in the direction he was indicating. The orcs were gaining distance and fast. "Kili, Tauriel, shoot them!" Thorin shouted. Both Kili and Tauriel drew there bows and began taking orcs and wargs out one by one.
Ori, sweet Ori, tried to take out a warg using the only weapon he had…a sling shot. His eyes going wide when he understood his mistake. Tauriel turned quickly to take out the warg and rider. Flinging arrows out and downing orcs with a passionate speed but there were too many of them. They seemed to just keep coming, with every two she downed, three more appeared.
She was about to take out another when she felt something ram into her with a solid force practically knocking the air out from her lungs before she was lifted from the ground. Tauriel struggled for a split second before discovering it was her husband who had her in his arms as he sprinted towards Thorin who she just realized was calling their names. As soon as he saw they were coming, Thorin jumped through the opening of what appeared to be a cave and disappeared from sight. She had barely a moment to brace her arms tight around his neck before Kili launched through the opening then slid, with her in his arms, down a steep slide of rock where he collapsed on the bottom with Tauriel still clinging to his heaving shoulders.
They did not have more than a few moments before Tauriel yelled out "Kili move!" Kili immediately acting on instinct and rolling them out of the way just as a body slid down landing in the spot they had just moved from. Kili, now directly on top of Tauriel looked down at his wife. "You okay?" His hand moving to check for any bumps or bruises before settling on her cheek. Tauriel nodded and Kili gave her a quick kiss then pulled away, giving her one last lingering look before standing and helping her to her feet. He did not release her hand as they joined the crowd now huddled around the dead orc.
Something felt off about this place to Tauriel. Something ancient. Something like…"This is no mere cave." All eyes turned to her as Thorin handed her the arrow which felled the orc. Tauriel looked at the familiar craftsmanship. "Elvish arrows?" She could hear the battle still raging on above, the arrows flying and the occasional order in a language she has known since her birth. They were just saved by elves.
"Mithrandir, are we near one of the cities?" Gandalf just staired at her, before he could respond, however, Dwalin shouted "I cannot see where the pathway leads! Should we follow it?"
Bofur was first to give his approval and the company left the sound of the battle above hoping for something less orc, and elf according to Dwalin, infested. Dwalin leading the group through the narrow zig zagging pathway etched deep in the stone, the light streaming down from the large crevice overhead.
"This cave is hidden. It has elvish enchantments. This is why the Orc's did not follow, they cannot enter." From the back of the line of dwarves, and several paces behind Gandalf, Tauriel whispered to Fili and Kili.
"I thought you said elves don't have magic." Tauriel looked to her husband. "We do not anymore, these types of hiding spots are from the first era, before that art was lost to us. We have about as much magic as Dwarrows still have." She nimbly sidestepped a large rock.
"Are you telling me we are headed straight for an elvish city?" Tauriel contemplated Fili's question. In truth she had no idea. "I do not know Fili. But if I were to guess, I do believe so." She listened to Mithrandir confirm there was powerful magic in this cave just as Dwalin call out "There is light ahead."
As they all filtered out of the cave Tauriel's eyes widened at the sight before her. She had heard of this place, listened to stories from Legolas, read accounts, and even once sat in on a meeting of the council in Mirkwood where they discussed it but never in her years had she seen such a sight. Before her stood the great valley of Imladris, otherwise known as "Rivendell." Muttered the Hobbit.
Rivendell. This is where Legolas assumed she went. She looked down at Kili beside her looking at the city in some sort of awe and wondered what he was thinking. Of the city, of who dwelled inside. Gandalf had suggested Lord Elrond could read the map, meaning he meant for them to visit the city for once allowing her to show Kili a piece of what her life was like before she came to him. Well, something like her life.
Rivendell was rumored to be much different than Mirkwood. Elrond ruled with kindness, compassion, and allowed his people the freedom to come and go. Thranduil preferred his people stayed close within the safety of the trees. Tauriel caught Thorin's eye just ahead and he gave her a quick nod, indicating they would be going to the town. She laced her fingers with Kili and the two were the first to begin their decent into the bright, peaceful looking, elven city.
Authors Note: Time for Rivendell. So far things aren't super different. I really didn't want them to be or I would have let them keep their memories, instead I just wanted to fit Tauriel into the story and soften up Thorin a bit, I love him and the boys to pieces. Eventually though, I will stir things up a bit, which I hope you will keep with me through it all. I have someone I want to introduce you all too, which has a story along with it which I will tell you when we get there. A fair warning, I have pretty much run out of chapters I had pre-written. Originally, I was never going to post this story. It was more for personal benefit and for my sisters who always are the first to read my new chapters. So, there may be more time between updates. Do not worry though, I have plans for this and I am even considering a sequel, but I better finish this story first. Next chapter will be Rivendell. See you soon.
