Thank you for the reviews everyone!
Happy New Year! (Even though I'm like a few days late.)
Chapter 8.1
The pale crescent moon was slowly disappearing, and some dark clouds passed over it every so often. A slight chill picked up which made the brown trees rustle back and forth which caused some of its withered leaves to fall to the ground and move with the wind.
It rained slightly, not too long ago, and everything was a little wet and the smell still lingered in the air. Konoha was experiencing some unusual weather as of late, and some of Konoha's people were making noise.
It wasn't because of the weather, but the poorer people who were dropping dead because of the resources they lacked and not enough housing.
Naruto brushed his hair slightly as he allowed his mind to wandered. He hated overthinking, and only stepped outside to get some fresh air, but that was two hours ago, and he was still up. He tried to forget the conversation he had with Nagato, but for some reason he had an overwhelming feeling.
He turned his head slightly when he heard the front door click and creaked opened slowly. His lips tugged up slightly when he saw Hinata looking at him with her big eyes.
"Sir," She wiped her half-dazed eyes, "why are you out here? You'll catch a draft if you stay out."
"I couldn't sleep, so I've just been sitting here. Why are you up so early? The sun hasn't even risen."
"I wanted some water, and I noticed you from the window. Would you like me to make you something to drink to ease your mind?"
Naruto shook his head slightly. "No, it is okay. I'll wait out here a little longer."
She pouted her lip slightly then nodded. "Don't stay out too long. Should I get you a blanket?"
"I'm fine, Hinata. Please go back to sleep," He reassured her. "I won't be out too long. I promise."
Hinata stared at him suspiciously, but she couldn't say anything to object. "Fine, but please come inside soon before you catch another cold."
"Hai, hai," Naruto smiled warmly. "Good night."
"Good night sir," She whispered before closing the door slowly.
Once she was out of sight, he let out a long sigh. These two have been nothing but trouble since they came to work for him, but he couldn't remember the last time he had fun. Teasing Hinata was so satisfying and he got a kick out of it. She was so docile, shy, sweet, and kind, not to mention a big baby, but she was so reliable and hardworking.
He wouldn't tell her, but he admired her. She worked so hard to make sure her sister had everything she needed, and not to mention she almost "lost" her job to defend Konohamaru. The girl was too kind hearted and he was afraid someone would walk over her like now.
Then there was Konohamaru. He groaned inwardly. The boy did have a heart of gold, but he swayed left and right which was not good. You think the rumors they spread about his grandfather would have made him think twice, but it didn't.
Naruto suddenly hummed. "I guess anyone would be suspicious to see Hinata and me in that position."
Konohamaru was nice, but he still had a lot to learn. He was truly upset with Konohamaru's allegations, however. He would hate for Hinata to learn something Konohamaru believed was true. It would probably crush her little soul.
The wind blew harder and louder than before and he shivered slightly. He got up from the seat and walked inside. Hopefully, his thinking would blow away with the wind.
The Namikaze's household was a little livelier than ever as everyone was gathered in the kitchen. Everyone was in the kitchen and Naruto was in the middle of the two servants. It first started out with her and Konohamaru trying to fix the faucet that had broken. Water spewed everywhere and the noises they made, made Naruto come downstairs to see what was going on.
He ended up sliding towards the door that led to the side of the house. He shook his head and crossed his arms. "Why is it always you two causing problems?"
"I-it just happened, sir," Konohamaru spoke up.
"Konohamaru, why couldn't you fix it?"
"Because I don't know how to sir," He lowered his head.
Naruto tapped his feet against the wooden floor. Konohamaru had a lot to learn about, especially being a young man in this society.
Hinata played with her index finger and was about to defend Konohamaru when Naruto glared at her. She kept her mouth shut and lowered her head.
"I'm not upset," He let his arms fall to the side.
They both raised their heads and their eyes lit up. "I suppose you didn't have anyone to teach you, but is that really an excuse? Shouldn't you read things in your spare time, and play with it until you fix it?"
"I would love to sir, but I don't think I'm smart to do something like that." Konohamaru shoulders' sunk.
"I have some books upstairs in the attic about these things. Go up there and read them in your spare time. When situation like this arises, I will let you watch me, so you know what to do."
Konohamaru wagged his imaginary tail and nodded eagerly. "Y-yes sir! Thank you so much." His ear perked up when he heard a bell rang and he got up. "May I leave to fetch the mail?"
Naruto quickly shooed him away, and he left the room in a hurry. "I've never seen someone excited about receiving mail."
"He's been waiting for Hanabi to write him back, so he checks every day," Hinata got up slowly with the help of Naruto.
"Oh really? Well, make sure he isn't neglecting his duties and leaving all to you,"
Hinata nodded.
"What are you going to make for me to eat today?" He asked, looking around the kitchen.
"I do apologize," She bowed, "but I've been absent minded and didn't get the necessary ingredients to prepare you anything sir."
"You have been absent minded lately, but let's not worry too much about it. I will accompany you to the market place."
"Sir, you don't have to. I have Konohamaru here, and besides, you look as if you haven't had a wink of sleep. Please go rest and we'll take care of it."
"I'm not sleepy and I wish not to be cooped up in my room," Naruto frowned.
"Ah, yes sir."
"I'm going to put on another shirt, and I'll meet you at the front gate.
Hinata bowed and watched as her master left the kitchen.
Konohamaru flipped through the pieces of mail until he spotted something addressed to him. It was a letter from Hanabi, and he jumped up and down before he rushed into the household.
"Hinata, Hinata!" Konohamaru shouted as he ran to the kitchen. He slammed the brown door opened and it startled Hinata that she almost dropped the wooden spoon on the floor. He paused in his tracks when her face turned serious.
"What did I tell you about running? You can seriously hurt yourself."
"I'm sorry," He said, clutching the letters in his hands. "b-but, Hanabi wrote me, and you!" He said holding up the envelope. It's almost been a month since I wrote her."
Hinata picked up the spoon and placed it on the counter. "I believe she had exams." Hinata informed him. He handed her the envelopes that were addressed to Naruto and her.
"Can I write her now?"
"Did you finish the chores that I assigned to you?"
Konohamaru nodded his head eagerly. "I did, and I didn't miss a spot." He grinned.
"Fine," Hinata gave in. "Naruto and I will be going to the Market place. We will be back shortly."
Konohamaru nodded slowly. He was still walking on eggshells around Naruto, and although Naruto forgave him, he still felt different around him. Despite Naruto offering his assistance, he disrespected him, and he wondered if he would ever earn Naruto's respect again.
"What's the matter, Konohamaru?" Hinata stepped in front of him. "Are you okay?"
He nearly jumped. "Yes, I'm fine," His eyes gazed down to the wooden floor. "Oh," His eyes lit up. "Who was that red hair man who visited Naruto yesterday?"
"Oh, that's Nagato. He's Naruto's cousin I believe."
"Wow! The red hair runs in the family huh?"
Hinata nodded. "If I remembered correctly, Melody told me it was a Uzumaki trait."
"Oh, really? Why did Naruto come out like that then?"
Hinata covered her mouth and giggled. "He probably looks like his father."
Konohamaru placed his arms in the back of his head and looked at the ceiling. "I don't think I've ever seen a picture of his mother or father."
"I guess it's something he doesn't like to discuss, Konohamaru. Please be mindful of your tongue." Hinata warned.
Konohamaru lowered his head as he already knew how much power his tongue held. "I'm sorry," He muttered.
Hinata rubbed his chestnut brown hair and he felt a little better. "Why don't you go and write Hanabi in your room."
"Yes ma'am," He said, walking towards the brown door.
Hinata watched his back before he was completely out of view.
His eyes read the beautiful strokes and he blushed. "Her hand writing is so cute. I wonder if Hinata's own is cuter."
Konohamaru,
Winter is soon approaching. Do you know I despise the cold with all my heart, but Hinata loves it? I suppose because it was hot- a scorching temperature of 100 when mother gave birth to me, and Hinata was born on the coldest day of Konoha. I'm not sure how she does it, but I need to wear three petticoats to keep me warm, and then my face gets so red.
Which weather do you prefer?
How is everything going there by the way? Are you and my sister getting along well? What about the master? Hinata refuses to send me a picture of him, but I guess he's cute since she says he is young.
Please tell me more about you, Konohamaru.
Are you going to school? Do you have any hobbies? Friends?
Do you know my friends call me daring for writing an unknown man, but I've seen the letters they receive from our upper classman! Yet they call me daring.
They always talk about getting married to someone well off, but it's the heart that counts right?
I wish for Hinata to find someone who will love and cherish her, and then maybe she'll stop worrying about me and focusing on her own life.
She's at the age where men should be seeking her hand in marriage and I know she looks beautiful. She favors mother so much, but I understand status plays a huge role in our society. Who would want to marry a maid? I say this with no disrespect, but I just want what's best for my sister.
I'm sorry if this letter is lengthy. But I love writing letters so much!
I would like to see who my stranger is. Do you mind sending me pictures of you too?
Your friend,
Hanabi H.
"Picture?" Konohamaru said. He opened the envelope, but it was empty. He picked up the letter and turned it around and stopped breathing momentarily.
He carefully peeled the tape off the back of the picture and studied it carefully. Hanabi was so pretty! Although the picture was black and white, he could tell she resembled Hinata slightly.
Hanabi was grinning with confidence in the camera, as a piece of her kimono fell from her shoulder. A blush deepened on his face, and he knew why her friends called her daring.
He quickly grabbed the quill and began to write.
Hanabi,
I don't care how lengthy your letters are. I enjoy reading them. It also makes me happy since I have someone I can talk to.
I prefer the sunshine because it always feel like a new day, I also like the snowy weather because my mother used to make me hot chocolate.
This is between me and you, but I've been secretly attending some classes in the morning every once in a while. I'm learning a lot of things I never knew. I know it isn't fair to Hinata, so I try to do what I can before I leave and work twice as hard when I come back.
I've met two friends so far. Their names are Udon and Mogi. We became friends when I gave Mogi her bear back thanks to Hinata.
I'm not sure there's much about me. I really don't have a hobby, so I guess I'm useless!
I agree. I want to marry someone I can love and will cherish, and I don't care about status! It's for shallow people. Iruka-sensei taught us that word, shallow.
Hinata is beautiful and hopefully the right man will come along and cherish just how precious she is.
It is unfortunate I don't have a camera, but as soon as I get one, I will take as many pictures as I can of me.
By the way, you're unbelievably beautiful.
Yours sincerely,
Konohamaru S.
The two youngsters walked in complete silence as they made their way to the market place. Hinata would walk around the puddles on the ground and would look back at Naruto occasionally. His eyes were focused on the path in front of them, and she couldn't stop herself from smiling for some reason.
"Why are you smiling?" He asked.
She nearly jumped out of her skin as she was startled. "Oh, it's nothing sir," She slowed down so he could catch up to her. "I didn't know it rained last night."
"It did, but not too much. Tell me, are you still sleeping with the lights on?" Her silence confirmed it. "Hinata, there's no need to be afraid anymore,"
"I know," She whispered. "I'm trying, I really am, but it frightens me so much,"
"What if I need help one night and there are no lights? Will you come to my rescue?"
Hinata chewed down on her bottom lip and nodded. "I will help you,"
They continued to walk, and Hinata kept glancing at Naruto who was on her left side from time to time. He was such a handsome man, and as the days went on Hinata noticed how much more handsome Naruto was getting. Surely, he wouldn't have any difficulties finding a suitor, not with his status and good looks. She remembered Ino mentioning Naruto having an abundance of money.
"S-sir,"
"Yes?"
"I know it was mentioned before, but do you plan on courting anybody?" Hinata pushed her index fingers together. "You're at age, and you won't have any troubles finding someone. When are you going to get married?" She couldn't bear to look at him, and she didn't understand why she was so flustered. Her heart was beating so fast, and she swallowed the lump in her throat when he didn't respond. "I-I'm sorry, that was very rude of me. It's none of my business."
"Why are you apologizing?" His voice sounded low and soft. "There's nothing wrong with being curious," He cleared his throat. "Do you have anyone in mind?"
Hinata's face turned unbelievably red and she shook her head. "I-I don't know anyone sir,"
He hummed. "Why do you believe I won't have difficulties finding a suitor?"
"Uh, well you are kind even though you can be a little harsh, and- and you care a lot about my wellbeing," She said softly. "You're well off, and v-very handsome," She muttered the last part.
"You think I'm handsome?"
Hearing him say that made the redness from her face flow through her neck until it reached her toes. She nodded. "Y-you are," She gazed at him through the corner of her eyes and she noticed his cheeks turned a little pink.
"How?"
"How what, sir?" Hinata tilted her head to the side.
"How am I handsome?" He suddenly stopped in his tracks and looked at her. "Doesn't my blonde hair disgust you? Or my blue eyes?" Hinata turned and looked at him. He'd look so sad just standing there and she could see the pain in his eyes. "My skin isn't pale, so how am I handsome?"
"But you are," Hinata whispered. "Your hair is so beautiful and soft," She lowered her head to hide her blushing face, "and you have beautiful eyes. They're so mesmerizing like the waters in Konoha," She tried to stop herself from saying anything more, but the words just kept coming out and she closed her eyes once she was done.
"You have a way with words, Hinata," He smiled brightly. "T-thank you,"
Hinata opened her eyes slowly and she stared dumbfounded at the man as this was her first time hearing him stutter. "I'm just being honest sir."
They continued their walk. "Don't you think about having kids?" Hinata asked.
"Not really. Marriage hasn't crossed my mind neither until Sakura mentioned it."
"But why sir? Don't you want someone to carry on your legacy?"
"My cousins will do it since they are the real Uzumakis," Naruto replied.
"But what about your father's legacy? No one will carry the blonde hair trait anymore if you go," She replied sadly.
"Don't worry about my legacy," He said, placing his hand on the top of her head. "You should worry about yourself," Hinata glanced up at him.
"I don't think I'll be getting married anytime,"
"Nonsense," Naruto said, removing his hand. "You're beautiful. I bet you have a lot of admirers."
She looked down, momentarily, before looking back at him. "You always call me beautiful, sir,"
"If you weren't then I wouldn't say anything," He said, walking past her.
She stared at the back of his head. His blonde hair blew back and forth, and then her eyes lingered to the ground. He was a different man from when she first became his maid and she always thought he would be worst than Saya, but he was completely opposite from her.
He was very cruel, but the more time she spent with him the more she got to know him. He was different from her previous masters, and she never once had to question his intentions or what he would possibly do to her once they were alone.
His intentions were always pure and good, and he always did his best to encourage and motivate her. Then she suddenly remembered the kiss he planted on her the night at the party. Her cheeks started to turn red and she thought she had forgotten about that.
It was just a quick peck and she had never experience something like that again with him. Despite that, she never questioned if he would touch her forcibly.
She raised her head when she spotted her master's shoes in her view. The sun shined on him, and his blue eyes stared at her with concern. "Are you feeling ill?"
Hinata shook her head and stepped back. "Um, no sir. I was just thinking, and I guess it got the best of me," She laughed nervously. "I'm sorry,"
He raised his eyebrow, slightly, and nodded, believing what she had to say. "It's best we be on our way. Stay by my side,"
Hinata nodded and she went on his right side. She spotted some of Konoha's soldiers walking past them, and she caught one of them staring at her when she made eye contact. It sent a shiver down her spine, and for some reason she couldn't look away.
His eyes suddenly went wide, almost as if he had seen something scary, and he quickly marched away, not bothering to look back.
Hinata was glad and she was able to take a deep breath. Her heart skipped a beat when Naruto pulled her to his left side, that pointed towards the forest. She glanced at him momentarily and was concerned he was upset with her as his eyes had an angry look in them.
"I'm sorry," She didn't know why she was apologizing, but she felt like she needed to.
Naruto sighed. "Why are you apologizing? Did you do something wrong?"
"You're upset. Was it because I had you waiting?"
"You did nothing to upset me, Hinata, but I want you to be mindful wherever you go."
"Is something the matter?" She asked, softly.
"You see those soldiers we passed by not too long ago?" She nodded. "All of them aren't good people, and it would be best to stay away from them. When you see them, walk the opposite way, okay?"
She dared not question why, but she knew he was telling her this for a reason. "Yes sir."
The market place was less than busy today, and even some of the vendors that were usually spotted were not there, including her favorite apple vendor.
"Are they having something planned today?" Hinata asked as her eyes continued to look around.
"No, I'm afraid not," Naruto said, walking towards one of the vendors. "Hinata, what is it we need?"
She walked besides him and looked at the fresh herbs that were just picked. Naruto watched her from the corner of his eyes, and he almost smiled when she was talking with the vendor about the latest supplies and other things she had to offer.
He liked it this way. The vendor, a middle-aged woman, didn't have those disgusted eyes when Hinata approached her. He knew how some of Konoha's people could be so judgmental. He remembered vividly his mother telling him how she and her sister were scrutinized until they found out they had an abundance of money and how the Uzumaki clan help Konoha back in the days.
He knew he had his moments with Hinata, but he still couldn't understand why so many people looked at her the way they did, especially if there was no proof. She came from a notorious clan, the Hyuga clan, and they were active in Konoha's government. They were high prestige people and they basically held Konoha in the palm of their hands, like the Uchiha's.
The Uchiha's were a famous clan and they went back a long way just like the Hyuga clan. They made up the police system in Konoha, including some military work.
Maybe it was because Hinata was a woman and not a surviving male heir, but still-
"Sir?"
Naruto looked down at Hinata who held some herbs and bread in a cute brown basket. He couldn't pry his eyes off her, and he nearly cooed when she held the basket up showing what she had just purchased. "Would you like some more?"
"I think we have enough, unless you want more,"
"No, no," She looked down at the ground. "I think we have more than enough bread and herbs."
"What's next on the list?"
"Some eggs and milk," She said, leading the way to the other side of the vendors.
Naruto followed behind her, and she would occasionally look back at times. This was something he noticed she did, and he always wondered why.
"I'm still here," He said when she turned back once more.
She jumped slightly and then nodded. "I- I just wanted to make sure you're okay."
"Why wouldn't I be?" After no response, he hummed.
"Because you're seen with me," She finally said. "I know some people say awful things about me and I don't want them to spread rumors about you because of me,"
"Didn't we talk about this before? If I didn't want to be seen with you, I would let you go about yourself, but I'm not that type of person," He said stepping beside her.
"I know, but-
"But nothing," He frowned, slightly, "let this be our last conversation about this particular matter. Do I make myself clear?"
She nodded. "Yes, sir."
The two made their way behind an older lady who was being chewed out by the vendor.
"Sir, please." She pleaded. "Once I receive our pension, I will pay you back, but right now I have children in need of food,"
"That doesn't concern me!"
"But they're poor orphans! I have so many of them- and-and- please sir! I promise I'll pay you back once we receive our funds. You can't expect these poor kids to starve! It's almost been a week and we're barely surviving on bread and water!"
"Get out of my face woman!" He spat. "That has nothing to do with me. You chose to take care of those poor bastards, so now you deal with it," He chewed on the toothpick. "You really think opening an orphanage was going to give you the upper hand, money, huh? That bastard doesn't care for us! Why should I feed your poor bastards anything when I have my children home? Are those bastards' life more important than my children? No!"
Hinata, unknowingly, held onto Naruto's sleeve. Her eyes watered when the woman hanged her head in shame. There were some people watching and they started whispering. Hinata went to reach for her pouch. She knew she didn't have much due to paying Hanabi's school fee, but at least she could have offered something to help.
Naruto eyed Hinata from the corner of his eyes and stepped up. "Get what you need, miss. I will pay for it,"
Hinata turned her head to look up at her master, and the woman turned around surprised. She looked at the young lad, confused and she looked around as she believed he was talking to someone else.
"I'm talking to you, miss," Naruto said, walking next to her. "I'll pay for her things," He turned his direction to the old man who straightened his postured when he saw Naruto's eyes slanted.
"Sir, d-do you really mean it?" There was a shimmer in her tired eyes and she clasped her hands together.
"Yes, now go ahead and get what you need. All expenses will be paid for," Hinata stared at her master in adoration. "You too, Hinata, get what we need so we can be on our way,"
Once everything was done and paid for, the older woman bowed respectfully. "Sir, I can't thank you enough for your generosity. It means so much to me, and the kids will also be grateful for your kindness. May I have your address so I can send you the funds once I receive it?"
"All expenses were paid for, miss. Please don't worry about it," Naruto said. "I'm afraid eggs and milk surely won't be enough for a household full of children. Why don't you shop around for a more nutritious food?"
Hinata and the woman stared at him shockingly and Hinata couldn't believe her ears. The older woman almost wept and she covered her eyes with her hands. Hinata quickly went to the woman's aid, and wrapped her arms arounds her, cherishing her.
"The master is a kind man, ma'am,"
She nodded in agreement, "H-he is,"
"Hinata, why don't you help her find some more things that would be healthier for the children," He took out a small pouch, "I'll be over there, looking at some watches. Let me know when you are done,"
Hinata nodded eagerly, and she turned to the woman. "Ma'am, let's go," She urged the woman.
"He's very kind," He heard her say.
"Yes, he truly is," Hinata smiled warmly. She looked back at Naruto who watched them from the distance, and she turned around as she felt her face go red.
"My name is Yumi, what's yours?"
"My name is Hinata, and that is my master Namikaze Naruto,"
Yumi nodded. "You have a very kind master, Hinata. I don't know what I would have done if I wasn't able to get them poor children anything to eat,"
"You mentioned you were waiting for your pension? Isn't the state helping?" Hinata inquired.
"It's been almost three months since I've gotten any assistance from our government," She lowered her head. "I've been spending money out of my own pocket to help those children, and I get so many," Hinata placed her hand in the center of Yumi's back and rubbed it gently as she spoke. "I feel like I'm failing these children. W-we don't have the necessary resources, and they're not helping me. I've pleaded and begged, but they're overbooked from the other orphanages and- it's just not enough,"
Hinata listened attentively as Yumi told her story. She knew exactly how Yumi was feeling and how those children felt.
"And he doesn't want to help or anything! He's a coward and I'm afraid to call him my Hokage," She finished.
"I understand how you feel, Yumi. Trust me, I do, but please be mindful of speaking about the Hokage in a public setting. I've been warned from my master not to badmouth the Hokage or it would surely be my head,"
"I know, I know. Thank you for listening to me, Hinata. You're very kind and understanding,"
Hinata blushed profusely. "I just want to help as much as I could. Thank you for helping those children. I know it's not easy, but I'm sure your reward will be plentiful,"
"A blessing did come today, and I am forever grateful and in your master's debt. Winter is approaching soon, but I will worry about that when the time comes. Right now, we have a little more to hang on to,"
Naruto eyed the little golden locket and pondered. He was just looking around until Hinata and the lady finish, and he stumbled to this jewelry vendor.
"You look like a sophisticated gentleman who probably has a beautiful woman by your side. Why don't you get your lady a beautiful locket? Wherever she goes, she'll always have you with her? Ne?"
"I don't have a lady in waiting," Naruto said, crossing his arms.
The snaggled tooth man gasped. "Someone as good looking as you surely have a lot of admirers. Well, why not get it so when you find that lucky lady, you can give it to her,"
"I-
"Sir," Hinata called out, running towards Naruto.
The snaggled tooth man looked in the direction where the cute voice was coming from, and his eyes widened when he saw the young lady approaching them. He couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"Sir, we're all done," Hinata said, panting heavily.
"You didn't have to run all the way here,"
"I didn't want to keep you waiting," She pouted.
"You always have me waiting. What difference would it make?"
"I do not," She frowned. "I just want to make sure everything is perfect for you,"
"Like the little surprise you and Konohamaru left me this morning?" He smirked playfully when Hinata kicked some of the dirt.
"I'll do better next time, sir," She bowed.
"Bring me to her,"
The snaggled tooth man continued to watch the young woman, engulfing her entire shape.
"Master Namikaze, I am forever in your debt. I can't tell you how grateful I am for your generosity." Yumi said, bowing. "Words cannot express how grateful I am because of you and your helpful servant, Hinata,"
"There's no need to. The children surely need help, and you've been struggling on your own for too long. My deepest apology and lack of consideration for the being of the children,"
"Sir, it's not you. You've done more for me than the governor of Konoha," Yumi said. "Thank you again, and I shall be on my way,"
"Where to? Surely you won't be able to carry all these things,"
"You've done so much, I-
"It's okay," Naruto said, picking up most of the things. Hinata grabbed some of the remaining items, and so did Yumi. "Lead the way, miss,"
Naruto listened attentively to the two woman who spoke with one another. Yumi was providing a recipe to fight off stubborn colds and fevers, and Hinata eagerly listened. He had never heard the girl talk so much and look so happy.
"I will remember that Yumi. It's really good to know since I have two males in the house," Hinata said.
"Ah, I know how stubborn they can be when they get sick,"
Hinata giggled childishly as she looked back at Naruto who smiled cheekily at her.
Once they approached the house, Naruto's stomach turned but his face remained the same. The house was almost in shambles, there were broken windows, and the staircase to the entrance had holes in it. The grass was dead, and the trees were barely hanging on for dare life.
Hinata stared at the house in shock. How were they able to live in these conditions?
"I know it's not the best, but we do our best to fix it up. My husband died a year ago, and he was the one that usually fixed it up."
"I'm so sorry about your loss," Hinata told her.
"It's okay," Yumi said, "he was a good man who served in the war and a good father to these kids. His worked here was done,"
Naruto followed the two women into the house, and he placed the things down in the kitchen.
"The children are to school,"
He nodded as he looked around the dismantled place. There were holes through the walls, and the wallpapers were hanging loosely. The table where they ate didn't look like it could handle anymore, and they clearly didn't have enough chairs for the children to sit on.
"When's the last time you've received your assistance?"
"Almost three months ago and it was barely enough for the kids they shove in here," Yumi said, putting some of the groceries away. Hinata also helped, and she remained quiet. If she did spoke, she felt like she would break down in tears.
"Do you mind if I look around?" Naruto asked.
"Ah, yes," She said, wiping her hands, "I can show you around,"
"I can do it myself. I know you need to start preparing for the kids' afternoon snacks soon. Hinata, help Yumi, okay?"
She nodded slowly and continued to unpack the items.
The floor board creek with each step and the lights flicked on and off throughout the hallway. Naruto looked through each room and saw the conditions they were in. There were barely enough beds, let alone blankets. The floorboards also had holes in them which would be hazardous to the children or even Yumi and rodents scurried around him every so often.
He sighed as he walked downstairs in deep thought. These conditions were not good, and he knew it. He wouldn't even want to sleep in such a dangerous place.
"Yumi, are you the only helper?" Naruto posted by the entrance of the kitchen.
"No, I have my younger daughter helping me, but right now she's working in the fields."
"I see,"
"Are you done, Hinata?"
She nodded as a response.
"I do have some important matters to attend to, Yumi, and I'm sorry to be in such a rush," Naruto said, walking towards the door.
"Please don't be sorry. You've done more than enough. Thank you again," She bowed.
Naruto nodded, and Hinata bowed. "Take care, Yumi," She whispered. He grabbed their things and the two walked, carefully, down the stairs.
Hinata had her head down the entire time, and Naruto sighed. "Hinata, come here,"
She walked, meekly, towards him and stood in front of him. Her head was still lowered, and he placed his hand on her chin and forced her to look at him. She was crying.
"You can be such a cry baby when you can," He said.
Hinata held onto his shirt and buried her head against his chest as she wept quietly. He was taken back, but he warmed up to her, and he, shakenly, wrapped his arms around her and embraced her.
He could feel his heart beat, but he didn't want to let go, not now. She felt so warm against him. He was like a candle, and she was the flame.
"I-I'm sorry, sir," She still had her hands gripped on his shirt. "It just saddened me. Yumi and the children does not deserve this," She said, staring up at him. Her cheeks suddenly turned red when she realized she was staring into his blue eyes. They didn't hold in malice, disgust or hate, but they reflected understanding, and a glimpse of sadness.
He was still holding on to her, afraid to let her go, and all he could do was stare into her beautiful lavender eyes. Her lips parted, and then she closed them as she too was drawn into his eyes.
"N-Naruto, are you okay?"
He finally let go of her and nodded. "I'm fine, but I'm afraid that's no condition for those kids to live in," He picked up the baskets from the ground.
"I know, and that makes me sad," She said, placing her hand against her chest. She could feel her heart knock against her chest and her stomach felt queasy. Having Naruto embraced her like that, almost filled a missing piece to her heart, and she felt bothered when he let her go.
"What do you suppose we do?"
Hinata's eyes widened. "Y-you're giving me a choice?"
"Well, yes. It seems you care a great deal for a woman you just met, and kids you know nothing about,"
"You were the one who brought her food. It seems you care just as much as I do,"
"I suppose. Should we leave her be?" Of course, he already knew the answer.
"I-if we can, can we help her, sir?" Hinata said, looking up at him.
"And what do I get in return?" He approached her.
They were back to looking into each other's eyes, and Hinata chewed the bottom of her lips. "I'll try my best to overcome the darkness," She finally answered.
Naruto looked at her before he laughed. "I will surely hold you to that, Hinata. Let's go. We have much work to do tomorrow,"
"You really mean it, sir?"
"I never go back on my word,"
Night quickly came, and Hinata was wiping down the countertop. Usually after supper, she would give Naruto his bath, but lately the man had put an abrupt stop to it. She didn't understand why because it was her job, but she shrugged.
She was excited and couldn't wait to help Yumi and the children in the next few days. That night at dinner, Naruto had discussed his plans with Konohamaru and her about finding a new household for the children and Yumi to live in. The house was too hazardous, and it would cost more money fixing it so he figured it would be best to start looking tomorrow.
Konohamaru was also shocked and she saw when he quickly wiped his tears away.
She stopped wiping the counter when she remembered his warm embraced and she covered her eyes. "Why am I thinking about that?" She shook her head, but no matter how many times she did, she couldn't stop thinking about it.
"Hinata?"
She turned around and saw Konohamaru standing by the door. "Is everything okay?"
"Yes, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Your face looks red,"
"Oh, I'm fine!" She placed the towel over the faucet. "Is Naruto still talking with his cousin?"
"Yes," Konohamaru said, walking to her. "Is it not strange he came so late in the night to speak with Naruto? What do you think they're speaking of?"
"I'm not sure," Hinata said, staring at the door to the entrance of the dinning hall.
It was strange to her why Nagato would come so late in the night after the master's bath to speak with him. This was his second time coming, but Naruto did not seem distress. She felt sad for the young man. He'd look so weak and feeble. His eyes were lifeless, and he walked mindlessly.
Just thinking about the torture, he might have gone through made her entire body shiver.
"Is something on your mind, Hinata?" Konohamaru asked, worriedly.
"No, I'm fine," She smiled. "Does he want us to stand by?"
Konohamaru shook his head. "He has dismissed us for the night."
Hinata bowed her head. "Well, we should probably go to sleep since we have a lot of work to do tomorrow,"
Konohamaru stepped to the side and Hinata walked past him. "Thank you and good night Konohamaru,"
"G-good night, Hinata,"
In the dining room, Naruto watched as Nagato's hand trembled as he tried to put the spoon to his mouth. Once he was able to take the soup in, he sighed in relief. He remembered Nagato vividly and he was always so happy and excited. Although he was young, Naruto had quite the memory and remembered a lot of things, and there were a lot of things he wanted to forget.
His once vibrant red hair looked dull and lifeless, and his pale skin was unusually sick. He was skinny, almost to the point it looked like he was being starved and he had dark rings around his eyes.
"How are you doing, Naruto?"
"I've been well, what about you?"
"Are you still giving mother the cold shoulders? I heard she was banned from your house."
Naruto's stomach twisted for some odd reason and he nodded. "Auntie can be a little tiresome, I prefer her not to be in my affairs,"
Nagato nodded, weakly. "She is, I must admit. I also heard she has not been too kind to you, but of course we all know. She's stuck in her ways, apparently," He mumbled. "How is your maid? I heard mother gave her to you?"
"She was the one who prepared our meal. She's been quite reliable and helpful, and I am pleased with her service."
"That's good. Helpful and reliable is always a good trait to have," He said as if he was talking to himself. "During my walks, I noticed things are not too well in Konoha. It's almost heartbreaking," Naruto stared worriedly at Nagato who had his head down. "Not good at all, not good. The weather has been strange lately, like during the time when war was looming among us. Do you think another war will happen again?" His head snapped up and his eyes were lifeless and dull.
"No, there are no signs of war, Nagato and Konoha is trying to get back on track. We've all been through some things,"
"There's no fun in war, Naruto. People die, like my friends,"
"I'm sorry about your loss. I know you've been through a lot,"
His lips tugged and he nodded. "We've all been through a lot. Your father died for a country that could care less about him or his family. Then your mother fell ill soon after and died. I can't imagine how heartbroken that must have felt,"
"Others have it much worse than me, Nagato." Naruto shook his head. "Far worse," He muttered. This talk was making him very uneasy and Nagato's hunting gaze made him feel like he was on the edge of his seat.
"Others' pain doesn't make your suffering irrelevant." Naruto nodded slowly. "You went through a lot. Karin told me how mother used to treat you, and even hit you. Such a shameless woman to do that to her sister's child," He looked away. "I'm ashamed of her actions."
"It's okay, I'-
"Is it really okay though? Nagato glared at him. "You're like me. You wear the weight of the world on your shoulders, not bothering to tell a soul how you really feel. Do you know what happens when you can't hold it any longer on your shoulders?"
"I-
"I wish this world could be better. A world where we didn't have to suffer. A world in which there are no wars, and everything is at peace."
"Nagato-
"I must be on my way. Thank you for inviting me," He abruptly got up.
Naruto stared at the empty seat in front of him, and he didn't know how to make out the conversation they just had. It was all over the place, and it left a bad taste in his mouth.
Surely, this was the last thing he wanted on his mind before he slept.
The following morning came, and as usual Naruto was the first one up. He was up extra early as he had to borrow a buggy from the Inuzuka clan.
Kiba was surprised to find out what Naruto was doing and even offered his assistance. Naruto agreed since he could use the help, and Kiba was a reliable source and helpful. He informed Naruto he would saddle the horses and be there no later than ten.
As he was approaching the main gates, he noticed Konohamaru running as fast as he could to the entrance. His eyes caught the attention of Naruto, and he fell flat on his face.
"Konohamaru, why are you out here?" Naruto asked, staring at the poor boy who went on his knees and hands, shakenly.
"Uh," He laughed nervously, "um, I was just uh- His eyes darted back and forth until he spotted some flowers. "I wanted to get you some flowers, but I didn't like any of them so I- I-I ran back home as I didn't want Hinata to fret about me,"
"Flowers? For me?"
Konohamaru nodded.
"Why?"
"B-because I, you're nice?" It sounded more like a question than a statement.
He eyed Konohamaru who was still on his knees and hands. "Are you a dog?"
"What? No!"
"Should I get you some ears and a tail?" Naruto said, amused.
Konohamaru felt his eyebrow twitched and he wanted to wipe that smirk off his master's face.
"Then get off your hands and knees," He said, leaving behind Konohamaru who burnt up.
"Gah!" He shouted. "One day I'm going to get stronger and bigger than him and even rich then we'll see who'll be laughing! Just you wait!" Konohamaru said, pumping his fist in the air. "I'm going to be stronger than you Naruto Namikaze!" He vowed.
"You're going to have to get off your ass and work harder if you ever want to beat me,"
The hair on the back of Konohamaru's neck stood up, and he quickly stood to attention. He slowly turned around and saw Naruto who was looking back at him.
"I-I was just joking sir. I didn't mean to badmouth you,"
"Like I said, get off your ass and be serious, then maybe you might have a chance," Naruto said, walking away.
Konohamaru's arms fell to his side and he felt like a huge weight had been lifted off him. He nodded his head and gazed at the sky. He vowed he would work just as hard as Hinata and become stronger and better than Naruto, and hopefully then Naruto would look at him as if they were equal.
Hinata peeped her head from the dinning room when she heard the front door open. The blonde man waltzed in, and he spotted Hinata who approached him.
"Sir, a-
"I'm fine," He said, already knowing what she was going to ask. "I went by Kiba to borrow a buggy and he's going to help us. The more the merrier,"
"I'll pack some more things for our trip," She said, darting towards the kitchen.
Konohamaru came in a few minutes later and bowed. "Sir, there's someone here to see you,"
"Who? And what do they want?"
"He didn't provide a name, and he looks a little shady, but he wants to discuss something with you,"
"Hmm, bring him to the parlor," Naruto said, making his way across the hall.
Naruto sat on the cushioned chair opposite from the snaggled tooth man, and he stared at the man who looked at him nervously.
"We've met before?"
"Y-yes, it was yesterday sir. Do you remember the golden locket?"
"Mhm," Naruto said, tapping his fingers against the arm of the chair. Konohamaru was standing by the door, waiting for Naruto to dismiss him, but he never did. "So, what is it you want from me? I have important matters to attend to today, and you're holding up my time,"
The man nodded eagerly, "I understand you're a man of the utmost importance, and I wish not to hold you up,"
"For what reason do you have to speak with me so early in the morning?" Konohamaru shivered from the coldness in Naruto's voice.
"Yes," He replied quickly, "I understand you have one of Konoha's beautiful maids working here under you, a-and I with your permission I wish to take her from you and make her my wife,"
Konohamaru's eyes widened and he glared at the man, angrily. There was no way someone like that deserved Hinata.
The room was struck with silence, and Naruto tapped his fingers on the armrest again. Konohamaru saw a flash of anger in Naruto's eyes and how his upper lips twitched uncontrollably.
"No, you may not,"
"Sir, for what reason if I may ask? From what I've heard, she has no prior engagements, and she is not courting anyone. For what reason can you possibly deny me your maid?"
"I owe you no explanations but my answer, and therefore my answer is no," Naruto said, standing up. "I say, it's best you leave my sight and my home. Konohamaru," Naruto called out, "please escort this man from my home with great haste. We should be on our way, now," He said, walking out of the parlor's room.
The snaggled tooth man stared angrily at the Namikaze heir. He growled at Konohamaru, who was trying to escort him from the manor.
"And you best not try anything, sir," Konohamaru snarled. "My master is a strong man, and he won't hesitate to put you in your place. Good day!" He said, slamming the door.
Konohamaru turned around and dusted his hands as he grinned uncontrollably. He was glad that he was the one who answered the door, and not Hinata.
"Tell Hinata nothing of this, do you understand?"
"Yes, sir! Someone like that doesn't even deserve Hinata and I'm glad you denied his request,"
Naruto nodded.
"Good day, sir!" Hinata bowed to Kiba who jumped from the chair of the buggy.
"Good day, Hinata," Kiba grinned. "You look a little different from our last encounter. I take it Naruto is treating you better?"
"Yes, sir. He is."
"I'm glad," He said, patting her head.
Hinata closed her eyes and waited for Kiba to be finished. "Remove your hand if you wish to have two of them,"
Kiba held his stomach and laughed. "How will you get the help if you did so, my dear friend?"
"I think I'll manage," Naruto said, glaring at his friend. He already knew how Kiba can get around women, and it's not like he didn't trust Kiba with Hinata, but the man happened to get any female he wanted and although Hinata was not loose, he did not want to take any chances.
Naruto helped her in the back of the buggy, then Konohamaru before he joined Kiba in the front of the wagon. Hinata looked from the back and saw Akamaru tailing along. The dog barked at her when she smiled, and she waved at him.
"I'm surprised you're doing something so nice," Kiba piped up. "It isn't like you, not at all,"
"The poor woman needed help, and the condition of their household is unsafe."
Kiba shook his head. "I've heard other stories too about other orphanages. They're overpacked, unsanitary and children are dropping dead." His eyes narrowed. "The funds are being backed up, but we all know where it's goin-
Naruto nudged Kiba on his arm, silencing him. Kiba glanced at him and looked back as he noticed the two servants went silent.
"Oi! When are you going to get Hinata a puppy?" Hinata's ears wiggled. "Hana had a new batch and people are placing their orders. Why don't you place one for your lovely maid?" Kiba grinned at Naruto who shot daggers at him.
Naruto quickly glanced over his shoulder, and he saw Hinata who stared at him with sparkling eyes. His right eye twitched and Kiba smirked. He had known his friend for a long time, and he was quick to answer, but now- there was hesitation.
"I'll put a cute bow on it, and Hinata will fall so in love with it,"
"They're so cute and fluffy," Hinata mentioned to Konohamaru. "I just wanted to hold all of them,"
Kiba grinned when Naruto crossed his arms. He decided to push it to see if what he was thinking was true. "I'll even give you a discount on it,"
"I'll think about it," Naruto mumbled. "At least it'll give her something to focus on other than my wellbeing," He mumbled.
Kiba laughed loudly before whipping the horses. "If you say so, my dear old friend."
The white clouds floated lazily around and even covered the sun from time to time. It was a nice breezy day, and the trees branches shook from to time. A large house stood firmly as they approached it.
Hinata's eyes widened at the huge mansion and she gulped. This was twice as big than Yumi's household, and there were so many acres to this land.
"Naruto, is all of this for Yumi?"
Kiba had a shocked look on his face, and his mouth dangled slightly. Both Konohamaru and Hinata ran to the entrance and wrapped their arms around the metal gates that blocked their entrance. Konohamaru's eyes lingered to the initials MK that showed on the gate bars.
"Naruto, are you sure about this?"
"They're dead, Kiba." Naruto said, tying the lace to his boots. "What am I to do with it? It's just going to rot."
"But I know there's a lot of memories instilled in this house. Are you sure?"
Naruto glanced at Kiba then the mansion. "My father built this house with the help of Sasuke's father for my mother and the abundance of children he would have, but that was cut short. These children need structure and a haven, and I am able to provide it for them."
"May I ask?"
"Go ahead," Naruto said, eyeing him.
"Why are you doing this? I've known you for some time, and you've never once meddled in the affairs of Konoha's people."
Naruto eyes travelled to Hinata, and Kiba noticed how Naruto's eyes softened when he gazed at the fair skin maiden.
"I guess I've matured a little," He said, taking the keys from his pocket. "Shall we get started?"
It wasn't the answer Kiba was looking for, but he shrugged. It was good that the young man was doing something with his fortune. He always wanted to ask the man why he never thought about giving back to Konoha's people who were struggling, but he had an idea why.
The towns people were quick to spread rumors, and no doubt with the help of his aunt, Saya. He had heard several stories about how Naruto got his inheritance.
One was that he hired someone to kill his father, despite him dying in war and Naruto being just a child. Another was that he poisoned his mother to claim his inheritance, and how he was a cursed child.
Some of it was laughable and others were just pitiful. The maids he fired didn't make it any better nor the fact that he was born in the month of October, the tenth day.
"Oh, and do not mention this to them," Naruto said, pointing his nose to Konohamaru and Hinata who was still in awe.
"I'm not a woman who gossips every day," Kiba frowned.
The group had their work cut out for them as it had been some time since anyone resided in the house. Hinata looked around occasionally and it looked like most of the things such as pictures, and other personal belongings were all gone.
Cobwebs aligned the house, and big dust balls laid throughout. "This is bigger than the master's house," Konohamaru said, stretching out his arms. "This Yumi person is sure going to love this!"
Hinata nodded. She was surprised to find Naruto had found a house so quickly. She knew they had a few days of work due to its massive size, and a lot of cleaning and scrubbing.
Konohamaru was standing over Naruto who was teaching him to remove some tiles from the bathroom floor.
"We're just going to work on the ones that have a crack or would be unsafe for the children," Naruto said, pointing to them. He handed him a chisel and a hammer and showed how to break in between the tiles before digging them up.
Konohamaru was in awe and he was excited to try. Naruto placed his hands over Konohamaru's own and guided his movements. A little pink stain splattered on Konohamaru's cheek and he nodded enthusiastically when Naruto asked if he could do it.
When he was done, he looked to Naruto for approval and he nodded. His eyes lit up and he gazed at the tools in his hands. "Sir, can you teach me some more?"
"Hai, hai,"
Konohamaru was extremely focused on the information Naruto was providing about the tiles and laying them down. He even observed how he measured the floor and tiles before cutting them, and Konohamaru let everything sink in.
He was incredibly grateful for what Naruto was doing, and the more Naruto taught and showed him the rope of things, the less Konohamaru felt like the man was his master. It was strange, but he was extremely happy that Naruto was showing him these things. He felt closer to the man in a sense, and when he did mess up Naruto did not berate him. He showed him how to do it properly and fix his mistakes.
"And you've officially tiled your first floor," Naruto said, stooping down to pick up the equipment.
Konohamaru fixated his eyes on the tiled floor, and he turned to Naruto with smiling eyes. "Thank you, niichan," (Niichan= Older Brother)
Naruto's head snapped to Konohamaru, and the boy quickly covered his mouth in shame. "I-I am so sorry, sir," He bowed repeatedly. "I- I don't know where that came from, and I- I'll check to see on Hinata." He said, before running as fast as he could from the man.
He closed his eyes tightly as he ran far away, and his tears seeped through his eyes and ran down his cheeks. That word just slipped out, and he hadn't meant to disrespect his master. He didn't even understand why he thought it was okay to say such a thing, but the thing that made it worse was the way Naruto stared at him.
They were cold eyes that burned the very depth of his soul.
Naruto stared at the spot Konohamaru was standing in not too long ago, and he rubbed the back of his neck. That was unexpected of the boy, and he wondered if he had said that to be funny. He just shrugged and gathered the belongings.
Kiba had left to gather some more supplies and to check on the status of the beds Naruto had placed an order for. It would be a few days before the got the number of beds needed to support each room, but that was okay.
By doing this, Naruto was providing work for the citizens which meant an influx of money for them and at least they would have something left over to pay their taxes.
Kiba left the store and was met by Ino, and Sakura who approached him. "What are you doing here, Kiba?" Ino asked.
"Where's Akamaru? It's strange to see you without him," Sakura said, eyeing the man.
"I'm running an errand for Naruto and checking on some things." Kiba replied.
"An errand for Naruto? What happened to him? Hinata? Konohamaru?" Sakura asked, bombarding him with questions.
"He's fine. He's fine." Kiba said, holding his hands up defensively. "The boy and Hinata are fine too. They're just helping us out."
"With what?" Both Sakura and Ino asked.
He let out a long sigh. "Naruto is fixing up a place for an orphanage in need."
Ino let out a laugh, but she stopped when Kiba glared at her. "You're serious?" She deadpanned.
"Serious as I am about my dogs. Apparently, he told me that the place they're living at is really hazardous and not fit enough for the children or the caretaker."
"But isn't the government helping?" Ino inquired.
Kiba clicked his tongue. "It's time you two stop living in a fairytale and open your eyes. They don't care about no one but themselves," He said, feeling a little agitated by their blindness. "and it's about time Naruto done did something with his inheritance."
"We don't live in a fairytale," Ino barked. "We see what's going on,"
"Okay, okay," He said, not wanting to get into an argument. "You know what. Why don't you two come and help? The more hands we have, the quicker we can be finish."
Ino twirled around and stared at Kiba, confused. "This is Naruto's parents house. Is he-
"Yes, and please do not question him on the subject. The children need it more than him, and he's doing something good for our community. Refrain from telling Konohamaru and Hinata this," Kiba said, pushing the gates open.
"Why?" Sakura asked.
"Because Naruto said so. Must you really question everything that goes on?"
"Hmph!" Sakura exclaimed. She crossed her arms and stuck her nose in the air. "I just wanted to know."
"So, you can gossip amongst one another," Kiba added.
Hinata was quietly sweeping the dirt in the hallway, when Konohamaru approached her. "Are you all done helping Naruto?"
Konohamaru shook his head. "We have quite a few more rooms to do, but I just wanted to check on you."
She still swept some of the dirt and glanced at Konohamaru. Under his eyes were red, and he had a tearstain on his cheek. "Did Naruto say something to hurt your feelings?" She paused.
"Uh, oh no-no no. I- He looked down and focused his eyes on the dirt. "What's it like being an older sister, Hinata?"
She hummed. "Well, it's no different from being a parent I'll say. You want to do what's best for them and motivate them in everything they do. You want to make sure they're well off and can fend for themselves as well as being their comforter and provider."
"Is it any different from being a master?"
"It is," She said.
"How so? Naruto takes care of us. He clothes us and guide us. He scolds us when we do something wrong and protect us," Konohamaru frowned, "Is that normal for a master to do? Would a master go so far to help those lower than him?" Hinata brushed some of the dirt in the dustpan. "How were your other masters? Were any of them like Naruto?"
"No," She whispered. "Some masters are very cold and ruthless and although they provide a place to rest your head, you're constantly under their mercy. They know no boundaries and they treat you like you're an object."
Konohamaru lowered his head. "I accidentally called Naruto niichan," Hinata could help but opened her mouth, slightly, "and he stared at me oddly, actually it was quite a cold stare and I'm afraid I've offended him, again."
"I'm not sure he meant to look at you the way he did, Konohamaru. In fact, I won't be surprised if Naruto was, well, surprised at what you said." Hinata responded. "I'm sure he has never heard anyone call him that before,"
"But wasn't it disrespectful of me?"
"If it wasn't Naruto, I would say yes, but he's such a strange master. I'm sure he was not offended by it," Hinata smiled. "Go look for him so you can help him."
Konohamaru searched Hinata's eyes for any trace of doubt, but he could not detect any. He sighed in defeat and nodded.
Naruto stared at the two girls oddly who was admiring the spacious house. He almost chuckled when he pictured Sakura picking up a broom to sweep. He wasn't even sure the girl knew how to do anything and may just get in the way of assisting Hinata.
"Why are you laughing?" Sakura said, raising her eyebrow.
"Do you even know how to sweep?"
Her face turned red, and she held her fist up at him. "I do know how to sweep."
"Let's go see about Hinata," Ino said, grabbing Sakura up the stairs.
Once they were out of view, Naruto glared at Kiba. "Did you really have to get them involved?"
"Yes, the more help the quicker we'll finish. Besides, I'm sure Hinata is lonesome up there doing her own thing. It won't her if she had a little company."
"I suppose so," Naruto turned on his heels, "Oh, do you know when Shikamaru will be back?" He glanced over his shoulder.
"Well, you know him, and his father have been in Suna for a month now talking with one of the officials over there,"
Naruto hummed. "Do you really think Suna is going to spark a war with us? They helped in the battle against the Otogakure no Sato, but do you really think they're going to turn on us?"
"There have been rumors ever since that man took charge of the Third Hokage's seat. He's unstable and senile, and so is the Kazekage of Suna. I've heard he's gone off the deep end, and now his son has disappeared."
"Do you think he killed him?"
"I won't be surprised if he did. It seems they'll cut off anyone's head who's a threat." Kiba narrowed his eyes. "That's why you better be careful."
"I'm not interested in the government or any nonsense like that," He said, fanning Kiba.
"Don't you find it suspicious that the man has a keen interest in you? Your father was good friends with the third Hokage, and he even ran in his office and was about to be named the Yodamine, but-
"Again, I have no interest in going to run for anything," Naruto spat. "My father turned around and helped this country, and went to war not once, but twice and no one remembers him!" He stared angrily at Kiba. "They talk about me behind my back, but yet they're quick to throw their daughters at me because of my inheritance. I only do this for those close to me Kiba and you know this."
"I did not mean to upset you, but I am just worried is all." Kiba spoke quietly. "I know you have no interest in this, but-
"It's best we talk about this some other time, privately," Naruto interrupted. The men turned their heads to the young lad walking up to them.
He bowed. "Can I help you with anything else, sir?" He asked.
"Yes, let's go ahead and check the other rooms to see what needs to be done," He said, leaving behind Kiba.
"It's so good to see you two," Hinata exclaimed excitingly as Sakura and Ino embraced her.
"Kiba told us what Naruto was doing, so we tagged along to help," Ino explained.
"Thank you!" Hinata smiled even more.
"Oh, Hinata you're glowing so much, and your face looks flawless!" Sakura took notice of the glowing girl. "Are you doing a new skin regimen? I've read some articles about taking care of the skin."
"Skin regimen?" Hinata questioned, cocking her head to the side. "I haven't been doing anything differently."
"What do you need us to do?" Ino asked, stepping up.
"If you want, you can scrub the floor, "Hinata said, pointing to the faded color that had some dirt to it. Then she suddenly paused. "Actually, I'll do that. I don't want your hands to swell up. Um, maybe you can sweep?"
Ino smiled warmly at Hinata who kept trying to find an excuse on why they shouldn't do a specific task. "Hinata, we're here to help. Please don't overthink our task."
"Yeah, we can handle it!" Sakura said, placing her hand on her hip.
The trio cleaned the halls until it was spotless, and Sakura heaved a sigh. She never noticed how much of an endurance Hinata had to cleaning because she was still walking around, making sure everything was in place.
"We're finished with this floor. Let's go to the next," Hinata mentioned.
"Ah, ah, Hinata!" Sakura said, outstretching her hand to grab the girl. "Let's talk!" She beamed.
Ino nodded as she took a seat on the floor.
Hinata also joined the girls, and they all sat in in a circle.
"Hinata, you're becoming prettier every time I see you," Sakura remarked. "You're such a woman now,"
Hinata blushed at Sakura's comment and bowed her head. "Thank you, Sakura, but I must say you're prettier than me,"
"Thank you," She beamed with joy, and Ino couldn't help but roll her eyes. "Tell me, how has Naruto been treating you as of late? Is he still being a crab? Did you ever read the book I gave you?"
Hinata placed her on her mouth and giggled. "He's been treating me fine. I've honestly seen a change in him, and I am grateful that he is my master and yes! I finished it in one day. Some words were a little difficult to understand, but I really loved it."
Sakura glanced at Ino before she spotted Hinata who was blushing. Her eyes slightly widened, and she cleared her throat. "I'm glad to hear that. I am so glad Naruto is doing something to help, but it's so unlike him,"
Hinata nodded eagerly. "He did! Yumi is going to be so happy,"
"Yumi?"
"She's the caretaker for the orphanage," Hinata replied. "She's so friendly and nice to me, especially with Naruto. I've believed she's been smitten by him,"
Sakura opened her mouth widely and giggled. "Really now?"
"Yes, I believe so. You know Naruto is a young bachelor and I'm sure there are a lot of women lined up to marry him,"
Sakura placed her hand on her lap and scooted over to Hinata. "Hinata, I knew I asked you before, but are you interested in seeing home? Ino and I will accompany you on the trip. What do you say?"
"My-my home?" Hinata worded. It had been such a long time, and she always dreamt of seeing home again.
"Yes, wouldn't it be fair? I'm sure you didn't get a chance to get some of your things and it's been such a long time. What do you say?"
"That would be nice. I'm sure you would like to see home, Hinata."
The mere thought of it did frighten her slightly, but it had been such a long time. Maybe there were things she could get, like a picture of her mother and father or even Ko. The more she thought about it, the more she was excited. "It would be nice," She paused momentarily, "but I'll have to get Naruto's permission first,"
Sakura frowned. "Why should we have to get permission from men? Our society is changing, and women should be treated equally," She grabbed Hinata's hand and smiled. "I'm sure he'll say yes."
"Men are always going to think they're on top, but they've failed to realize who created them," Ino smirked.
Sakura giggled childishly. "I know. I hate how they always walk around and think you're this cute dainty thing that needs saving, hmph!" Sakura crossed her arms. "I've been on several trips with Naruto and Sasuke, and I've had to defend my own self at times."
"Trips? Like adventures?" Hinata asked, interested. "Where to?"
"You mustn't tell mother, but I've been on the outskirts of Konoha quite a few times to assist Dr. Tsunade," Sakura said, pressing out her puffy pink dress.
"Really?" Hinata said in awe. "I know you did mention you wanted to become a doctor,"
"Hai, so she lets me help, but if mother ever found out she would have a hiss!" Sakura frowned. "She believes what Dr. Tsunade is doing is quite wrong and unprofessional for a woman."
"But she's doing so many good things!" Hinata fought back. She had remembered how she saved Konohamaru's life.
"Sakura's mother can be overbearing at times," Ino commented.
"Overbearing is an understatement!" Sakura retorted. "But I've been out to the outskirts and there's a lot of bandits out there who'll steal and take whatever you have."
"I've had to shoot a gun a few times, thanks to Sasuke, but it was worth it," She smiled. "I believed it has made us quite closer."
"Sakura," Ino whined. "Why must you be in denial?"
"You've shot a gun before? That's truly impressive, Sakura! I've never held one before, but it is quite interesting."
"It is, and it's a lot heavier than what it looks. But I refused to be this damsel in distress that I've been secretly taking classes to defend myself. I've been practicing my taijutsu and judo." Sakura nodded her head, impressed by her own accomplishments.
"Taijutsu," Hinata said, letting the word roll off her tongue.
"Are you okay, Hinata?" Ino asked.
"I've heard that word before, many times to be exact," Hinata said. "I believed my father practice taijutsu. There were so many things I was supposed to learn about my clan, but I-
"Eh, I wish I can sit around and gossip with my friends,"
Hinata quickly got up and bowed. "Oh, I'm sorry sir. We were just talking," Hinata said, pointing her index fingers together.
"Hmm, it looks like you were having a good time talking about something," Naruto said, amused. He kept his eyes focused on Hinata, even after Sakura butted in to defend her.
Ino took note of how Naruto's pupils dilated slightly when staring at Hinata. "We'll take Hinata upstairs to finish up," Ino said, grabbing Hinata by the arm and leading her down the hall. She giggled uncontrollably as she lured Hinata upstairs and Sakura wanted to know what was so funny.
"Why are you laughing, Ino!?"
"No reason!" She laughed some more.
The sun was settling in, and Naruto was carrying Hinata on his back. The girl had falling asleep some time ago during their ride back home, and Naruto had to admit she looked unbelievably cute when she slept.
Konohamaru also noticed when Hinata had accidentally fallen asleep on him.
As the two were walking to the household, Konohamaru broke his silence. "I'm sorry about what I said earlier, sir. I didn't mean to disrespect you." His voice was soft.
"You and Hinata are just a like. Why do you apologize when you've done nothing wrong… this time?"
Konohamaru pushed the door open, letting Naruto into the house. "You're not upset with me?"
"Why would I be?" Naruto's voice echoed throughout the quiet house.
"Because I've said some hurtful things, and I believe you're still upset with me," He said, lowering his head.
Naruto sighed. "Truth be told, it does anger me sometimes when I think about what you said, but you can only learn from your mistakes and I trust you've been feeling guilty ever since,"
"I have sir. I don't know what's wrong with my tongue and I just say things and I'm just sorry. I don't want you to hate me, or- or abandon me. You've given me so many opportunities others haven't and- again, I'm sorry and I'm sorry for calling you niichan." He blushed heavily. "I've never had someone teach me the things you showed me today, and it kind of made me feel less of a servant and more of an equal,"
Naruto placed Hinata gently on the futon, and he watched as she turned over and cuddled her head in the pillow.
"I won't lie, but I was quite surprised something like that came from your mouth. Did you think I was upset? Is that why you ran away crying?"
"I was not crying!" Konohamaru shouted, and he quickly covered his mouth when he saw Hinata stirring in her sleep.
"I saw the little teardrops you left," Naruto chuckled when he saw Konohamaru turning redder than a tomato.
"Hinata says you're not like other masters and I'm starting to believe her," Konohamaru let his arms hanged loosely.
Naruto got up and walked towards the door. "I suppose, but I'm also not the best."
Konohamaru watched as Naruto slipped in the darkness and wondered what he meant by that.
Review.
AN:
This is not the end of Chapter 8, but if I had continued writing it would have been more than fifty pages as chapter 8 covers a lot of things.
Here are some rules about inheritance and assess in Konoha, as well as owning someone.
-If a female maid is offered a proposal, the proposer must get permission from the master to give his maid up. The master can approve or deny the proposer without any explanation. If the maid wishes to get marry, she must quit her job and forfeit her remaining wages and pension.
-A male heir (alive) is the only one who can get access to any estate or inheritance at a certain age or depending on what the will entails. If there is no will, everything will be forfeited to the state until the child reaches of age, and even than can the state deny the heir any assess.
A female who is heiress will not get anything, and thus everything will go to the state/governor until the female heir marries a man. Only then will she receive what is hers, and if divorced/death, the husband can petition to get any assess as he will be considered the rightful heir.
If the heir dies, everything goes back to the state or depending on what the will entails, it can go to the closes (living) relative.
If the heir (male) dies and is married, everything goes to his wife and children, regardless if there is a will or not.
-Naruto does not own a buggy nor horse as he feels it is too much work and wishes not to put a burden on Hinata or Konohamaru, especially since they are not experienced with taking care of horses.
-The war that took place were between Konoha and Otogakure no Sato. Some of Suna outskirts were destroyed, and they assisted Konoha in the war as they are allies.
