Chapter 8: A Visit with the Cullens

"You might want to change clothes. Youth Group is meeting at the Cullen's tonight. We're all going. Charlie is helping with the food and they invited all of us."

"Really," I said. I was a little surprised because vampires don't eat.

"Nessie has been begging Charlie to come over and cook. So, he caved in and we are going over tonight. Nessie has Charlie around her little finger,"

"I didn't know you were related to the Cullens," said Katie

"Not really. Charlie's daughter, Bella married Edward Cullen. Nessie is their daughter. She is imprinted to Jacob." I said.

"What should I wear?" asked Katie

"You'll be fine in jeans," said Mrs. Sue

"Is a sweater set ok?" she asked

"Absolutely," said Mom.

"Let's load up" said Mrs. Sue, as we all got int the suburban.

"I can't wait to show you the train. Mom, are we meeting Charlie and Auntie Belle there?"

"Yes, Ian," said Sue.

"Their house is pretty cool," said Seth, "Nessie told Ian something about a train they rigged up."

After about fifteen minutes, we pulled up in front of a large house. It has to be one of the most incredible houses I've ever seen. It looks like something you'd see in Architectural Digest. Actually, it had been featured in that magazine. It is sleek but clad in wood in the modern style. It blends in perfectly with the forest.

"Welcome, please come in," said Esme, opening the door.

"Hi. I'm Katie" said Katie

"I'm Esme, and this is Emmett, Alice, Rosalie, and Jasper," she said as she pointed to the others in the room. Emmett, Jasper, and Alice were all huddled over a chess board. Emmett came over to speak to us. The first floor had an open floor plan with a huge fireplace separating the dining and living areas. The windows are floor to ceiling and open on a magnificent deck. I can see Jacob and Charlie manning the grill outside. It is stunning. There is also a huge modern kitchen.

"Nessie told me that you set up a train," said Ian

"Yes, we did," said Rosalie, "come and see it."

I looked up and saw that a train track ran all the way around the room. There was a small train table with a Hogwarts castle set up in a corner of the living room. But the train didn't stop at the table, the tracks sloped up a hill and ran all the way around the first floor of the house. It is amazing.

"Want to see something really cool" asked Rosalie

"Sure" said Ian.

"What would you like to drink- coke, diet coke, sprite, or water?"

"I'll have sprite," said Ian

"I'll take a diet coke," said Katie

"same for me," I said

"Esme put a sprite and two diet cokes in the train," said Rosalie. She had to raise her voice a bit because it is kind of far away. It only took a minute, but the train delivered. The train had two extra cars- each car had a drink in it.

"This is amazing," said Katie

"Awesome" said Ian.

Honestly, this has to be one of the coolest things that I have ever seen in my life.

"So, who built the trains?" asked Katie

"I did," said Rosalie, "Everyone looks so surprised when I say that. But girls make great engineers and I happen to love machines and trains. That and I got tired of the boys asking for things from the other side of the room, so I fixed the problem"

"You did a great job," said Katie

"Rosalie, Emmett" called a girl. I looked down and saw that Nessie had come in with her parents and made a beeline for us. She hugged Rosalie.

"Isn't this the best train ever," said Nessie

"Yes, it is." I replied.

"Who wants a snack?" asked Charlie.

"I do," I replied. Charlie brought them over to the table with the train. "I just knew that the humans would want food." I took a handful of the goldfish. Then I caught a strange scent coming from Katie.

"Katie, come over here," I said as I pointed to the couch. She sat down, then slowly tilted until she was lying down.

"Are you ok?" I asked

"Yes, just a little woozy," she said.

"I didn't want you to faint again. I knew you would if you didn't sit down."

"How did you know?" she asked

"I could sense it," I replied

"So that's what the salty smell was," said Jasper.

"Hi Katie," said Carlisle, "Let me see your hand."

Carlisle took her hand. I could see that he was trying to check her without letting her know.

"Nessie, sweetie," he called, "would you bring that bowl of goldfish over here."

"I'm fine," said Katie, "why are you so worried. I can tell you are checking things out."

"You're very smart. And you're correct." He said, "I saw you get a little pale and then I saw Seth practically push you over to the couch. I know you fainted yesterday, and I just want to make sure you are ok. Here are some goldfish and drink your coke. You need to keep your blood pressure up."

"Well, at least this is easy medicine to swallow," said Katie, taking a sip of her coke and a handful of crackers. "I feel fine. Will you both stop hovering? You think I'm breakable."

"Don't worry about it Katie," said Bella, "for some reason, men think all women are breakable. You should have seen Edward and Jacob when I was pregnant. I couldn't do anything without the two of them freaking out."

"The truth is that we are stronger than most men." Said Rosalie

"Before this turns into a debate on feminism, let's eat. Dinner is served," said Esme.

Jacob and Charlie had cooked steaks, potatoes, and a cucumber, corn, and tomato salad. It is all delicious, but then Jacob is a good cook. I think Esme was responsible for the salad- she must have learned some human dishes for Nessie.

"This is really good," said Katie

"Thanks, but you should be thanking Jacob, he did most of the cooking," said Esme.

"Thanks, Jacob," said Katie.

"You're welcome," said Jacob, "glad you liked it."

"Yes, Jacob's the best cook," said Nessie

"You should save one of those steaks for Ginger," said Nessie, "she needs it because she has puppies. Katie is getting a puppy named Dora."

"Great," said Rosalie, "see if the dog can train other dogs."

"Rosalie, you can do better," said Edward

"Quiet, guys, Katie doesn't know." I said

They say that two people can keep a secret if one of them is dead. And that is true. It is kind of unusual that Katie may be the only one here who doesn't know that she is eating with vampires and wolves. She knows she is my mate. I just haven't gotten up the courage to tell her about the wolf thing. I may end up telling her the vampire thing, too.

"What don't I know?" asked Katie

"That Jacob is a wolf." Said Nessie

"She likes wolves, too," I said.

"Who wants ice cream?" asked Esme

Thank goodness. Nessie just about blew our cover. I'm still not sure why we were invited tonight, but the food was good. and Katie seems to be having a good time. I'm going to ask Jacob when I can start training Dora for her.

"Do you want chocolate or vanilla?" asked Esme

"Chocolate," said Katie.
