*Chiron's POV (Annabeth and Percy are 20 and married)

It had been a pretty quiet summer. There were no quest's or wars and barely any monsters had attacked. All the campers were here, even some of the older ones, and things had been running smoothly.

I should have known that the peace wouldn't last.

I was teaching archery to the second year campers, when the conch shell blew. Confused, I told the kids to keep practicing while I went to see what was going on. With my keen ears, I knew that the shell had been blown from the Big House.

As I approached, I saw Heather, a daughter of Hermes, waiting outside the Big House. Her brown eyes were filled with worry and fear which made me gallop towards her faster.

"Thank the Gods you're here. There was a few Dracanes and Hellhounds at the border and a few of the older campers went to go take care of it, and then Percy stepped in front of Stella to block the Hellhound that was about to pounce on her, and he got hurt and Annabeth is-" Heather rambled, obviously distressed.

"Heather, you need to calm down." I told her gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. She took a deep breath and let it out. "Now, tell me what's going on?"

"Percy." She says softly. "Some of the Apollo kids took him to the med bay and said that he would be okay, but Annabeth is freaking out and she won't calm down. Malcolm sent me to get you to try. She's inconsolable to anyone else who tries."

"Thank you, Heather. You try to calm down while I take care of this, okay." I waited for her to nod before I ran to the infirmary.

As soon as I was in the room I could see Annabeth sitting in a chair looking distraught. I did a quick check around me to make sure none of the campers I passed on the way needed my help. It looked as though all the campers in here had just suffered miner injuries, so I continued on my way.

As I approached, Annabeth looked up at me. She had tears shining in her grey eyes. Percy was laying on a cot unconscious. He was shirtless, bandages wrapped around his torso. Annabeth had one of his hands wrapped in both of hers.

"How bad is it?" I asked her softly.

She shook her head at me, looking back down at Percy.

"He took a swipe from a Hellhound. One meant to kill," She told me softly. "It almost tore him in half. I-" She choked a little, a tear sliding down her cheek.

"I thought he was dead." She finished, looking up at me again. "We got him here as fast as we could. Mia got him to stop bleeding and stitched him up. She told me he would be fine and that he should wake soon. But, Chiron, I can't stop seeing it. Thinking about it. I saw what he was about to do and I couldn't do anything to stop it." Another tear fell as she spoke.

"You've done what you can, Annabeth." I told her softly. She looked up at me again, her eyes glassy. "Mia said he should be fine. And as soon as he wakes up, we'll get him some water and he'll be good as new."

"I know that." Annabeth said, still looking up at me. "But I can't stop thinking about what would have happened if he wasn't okay. I don't know what I'd do." She finished quietly, looking back down at her husband.

"It does no good for you to dwell on what if's," I told her, setting my hand on her shoulder.

Annabeth just looked back down at Percy.

A few hours later, I was seated in my wheelchair reading as I sat with Annabeth to wait for Percy to wake up. I was startled out of my novel as Annabeth let out a quiet sob.

I looked over to find Percy's eyes blinking open. Annabeth still had a hold of one of his hands, her other was carding through his disheveled hair. Her eyes were glassy but focused on her husband.

Percy groaned, fully opening his eyes.

"What happened?" He asked, voice scratchy with disuse.

"You took a hit from a Hellhound," Annabeth told him. Percy looked up at her, untangling their hands and reaching up to brush his thumb across Annabeth's cheek.

"Was it that bad?" He asked her quietly.

"Let's just put it this way," Annabeth said, voice going stern. "If you ever pull anything like that again, Perseus Jackson, I will kill you myself.

"Noted," Percy told her. He looked over at me with a little smile. I smiled back.

"It's good to see you awake, Percy," I told him. In all honesty I was extremely grateful. I had trained so many heroes who had died young, I just wanted some to be able to live long and experience more than quests and deadly monster attacks.

"I'm going to go get Mia and some water." I told the two, rolling away to let them have a moment.
