Kayo X Satoru

Chapter 8

Atop a wooden bridge stood Yashiro, the thrill of the hunt making his pulse skyrocket and he smiled with exhilaration. A large gas can and a length of rope in his hands as he moved into position to make his final preparations, when he spotted a figure at the other end of the bridge.

"Long time no see, Mr. Yashiro," Satoru said as he held the lantern in front of him and looked into his former teacher's eyes, burning with madness.

"You're early, Satoru," Yashiro answered with an eerily calm smirk.

"It's over. I've come to end this." Satoru said as he leaned breathlessly on his crutches.

"I was still finishing up with my preparations to kill you," Yashiro spoke with thinly veiled malice. "How do you do it?"

When Satoru looked confused, Yashiro continued.

"I changed Kumi's schedule, I set up fake traps in multiple locations, I did everything to this point to give myself no less than a fifteen minute headstart, and here we are; me in the trap and you outside it. Hell you even walked here yourself! You're too quick! How did you do it?!"

"So you didn't plan to kill Kumi, this was all just to draw me out," he asked.

"Oh no I was definitely going to kill her too, but you... you excite me! Your eyes were always radiant as you interfered with my plans! You always seemed to know what I was going to do, you always got in my way! It's been so exciting I couldn't wait for you to regain your memory so I could feel this thrill again!"

Satoru felt his stomach clench in disgust as the madman rambled on.

"Here I am, still walking free. Can you arrest me? Can you judge me for my crimes? You don't have much to go on, yet I can see it in your eyes, that very same conviction that I've seen so many times before! Tell me where your confidence comes from!"

Satoru approached his old teacher, meeting him in the middle of the bridge.

"I've been waiting eighteen years to destroy your fifteen minute advantage. I've lived my childhood three times to get to this moment and lived the year 2005 twice. I've waited and yearned for this chance as I traveled through time to get to it. If I told you all that, would you believe me, Mr. Yashiro?"

Yashiro's eyes grew confused for a moment before his mind caught up and he smiled at the young man.

"I'm probably the only person in the whole world who would believe it. Time and time again you stopped me in ways only someone who had seen my work and new my methods, and possibly even knew me could've done."

"You came here to end it, didn't you?" Satoru asked his old teacher.

"I have to. It consumes me. The last thing I must do, the most important thing for me to do is kill us both. To end this game once and for all."

He lit a lighter and dropped it into the gas tank, causing it to explode and cover him in the burning liquid. Satoru knew he had to stop him. He had to be captured alive to bring justice for the things he'd done and, in a moment of blind courage, Satoru talked Yashiro, both their bodies slamming onto the bridge and crashing through, falling over twenty feet into the cold waters below.

AN: This chapter is short because it was a continuation of the last chapter and for those who've read the manga, yes I cut down on as much of the monologuing as I could in favor of getting to the emotional core of the conversation. I hope my fans can read this and enjoy as I'm still trying to get adjusted to writing stories on my phone and please let me know if there is anything you guys didn't think was good.
