Rumi could not help but laugh a little as Izuku once again wanted to verify that he was allowed to come with her to UA.
"So you are sure that the principal said that he wanted me to come along?" The green-haired man said suspiciously as he drove his car down the highway. "Rumi, I swear to god if this is another one of your annoying stunts I am going to block your number again."
Sitting in the passenger seat next to her partner, Rumi rolled her eyes as she waved away Izuku's suspicions. "Izuku I swear that I am telling the truth." She said placatingly. "Do you want me to pull up the email right now and show you so you can stop being so paranoid?"
Dressed in his standard black government suit, Izuku grumbled and focused on the traffic in front of him. "Fine. I just put a lot of preparation into this and I don't want to see it wasted."
Now it was Rumi's turn to be suspicious. Straightening up in her seat, the rabbit hero crossed her arms. "About that. Why the hell did you need the names of all the students who are gonna be there? I can guarantee that none of them are some sort of PLF sleeper agent waiting to try and kill you in the middle of the UA campus."
Smirking, Izuku gave Rumi a conspiratorial wink that made her heart flutter.
"Lets just say I want to be prepared for any situation." He said cryptically. "I looked up the UA curriculum and I have a hunch that this is gonna be more than just a simple lecture visit."
Forcing the blush off her cheeks, Rumi brushed a stray piece of lint off her hero outfit and huffed in annoyance. "Y'know Izuku you can be such a pain to work with. Yesterday you were making such a big deal talking shit about UA and pro-heroes, but now it seems like you are actually looking forward to this."
Taking an exit ramp that sloped down to a tree lined road, Izuku held up a finger like he was a professor about to disprove an argument. "I still stand by what I said. In my eyes, most pro-heroes nowadays are more concerned about power and ratings than actually helping people. If everything goes according to plan I will get a chance to knock those jackasses down a peg." He paused before speaking again like he had forgotten a trivial detail. "Oh yeah, and maybe teach some kids a thing or two."
Smacking her forehead with her non-bionic palm, Rumi groaned in annoyance. "See? This is exactly what I mean. You have such a big chip on your shoulder when it comes to quirks. Just please try not to get into a fight with a teacher or anything."
Chuckling, Izuku turned the car down a narrow road as the tall buildings of the UA campus poked out from behind the treeline. "That is something I never expected to hear. The notoriously hot-blooded Miruko telling me to behave myself."
Rumi was about to reply with a smartass comment, but she was interrupted as the car pulled to a stop outside an imposing metal security gate. A small intercom box was mounted on a pole and Izuku reached out and pressed the large green button on the front of the device. After a few silent seconds, there was a click and a gruff voice spoke.
"Miruko and her liaison. " A gruff voice stated. "Wait a few seconds while we scan you. Security and all that."
Izuku and Rumi waited in an awkward silence until there was the screech of scraping metal as the security gate slowly opened.
"Everything looks good." The male voice on the intercom said. "Drive down the road and take the second right. Park in the visitor parking lot and someone will meet you at the front desk."
A short drive later, Rumi stepped out of Izuku's sedan and yawned as her partner set the parking brake and got out as well. The parking lot was completely empty, Izuku's black sedan sticking out like a sore thumb as the two partners walked into the nearby administrative building. Walking through the automatic sliding glass doors with Izuku right behind her, Rumi immediately spotted their greeter.
To the untrained eye, Principal Nezu might look like something out of a kids show. He was a diminutive individual with short white fur covering his entire body, his features a mix of a variety of animals that made him look deceptively harmless. He wore a classy outfit that one would find on a department store display or magazine ad.
"Welcome Miruko!" Principal Nezu said warmly. "I am so glad that you agreed to come." The short principal then faced Izuku and gave him a courteous nod. "Welcome Agent Midoriya. I have heard good things about you from various sources, and if Miruko herself vouches for you I am sure you are quite the upstanding individual."
Izuku simply nodded stiffly and spoke in a flat tone. "Thanks for letting me participate."
Seemingly undeterred by the green-haired agent's lack of enthusiasm, Principal Nezu gestured for the two adults to follow him.
"If you would please follow me, I will guide you to the students." The short furry man said.
Following the principal through a series of hallways, Rumi and Izuku were led outside by the cheerful animal-man hybrid.
"The students you will be teaching have been selected from our hero course." Principal Nezu explained. "Classes 1-A and 1-B to be exact. Miruko, you might have met a few of them during the battle against Tomura Shigaraki. However, this lesson today only involves ten students, five from each class. They are the ones their teachers think would benefit the most from learning some new information."
Shrugging uncaringly, Rumi idly rubbed her bionic arm with her good hand as she looked around at the impressive campus. "I might have, but I doubt I will remember which ones they were. I was kinda busy getting the shit kicked out of me by those high-end Nomu."
If the principal was affected by Rumi's blunt tone he did not show it. The short furry administrator guided the two partners to an area mimicking a standard urban environment. A small crowd of people were gathered in the middle of an empty street, a mix of adults and teenagers of all kinds. It was a bright and sunny day with a clear blue sky, the only thing that could be seen overhead was a far off helicopter puttering around over the freeway.
Walking up to the group of students and teachers, Rumi put on her best poker face as she quickly examined who would be watching. The students did not stand out in any way, but the teachers certainly did. First there was Eraserhead, a former pro-hero with quirk nullifying powers. There was Vlad King, a muscular man who could control his own blood. Off to the side stood the former pro-hero known as Midnight, who was already eyeing Izuku like he was a juicy snack. Standing towards the back of the group was the cowboy-themed hero named Snipe, and next to him was arguably the most well known pro-hero in the world, a frail looking man named All-Might.
Frankly, Rumi was barely able to stop herself from rushing over and asking the legendary man for an autograph. Sure, he was not the man he used to be, but that is what happens when people get old. It was not All-Might's fault that his quirk had withered away like a plant in a radioactive desert. The man had done enough heroic deeds to last several lifetimes, and in Rumi's mind he still deserved respect even though he was now a frail and sickly man.
Rumi was broken out of her musings when Principal Nezu stepped forward and cleared his throat for attention.
"If you are all ready, I think our special lesson can begin." He stated.
Immediately, the students lined up in a row as their teachers stood behind them.
"I believe some introductions are in order." Principal Neze said cheerily. "Just to make sure everyone knows what to call each other."
Gesturing to the students, the short and furry principal spoke like a proud parent. "Starting from the left we have students Kirishima, Ashido, Uraraka, Iida, and Yaoyorozu from class 1-A. Then we have students Shiozaki, Kaibara, Kendo, Awase, and Kodai from class 1-B. Behind them are the two homeroom teachers Eraserhead and Vlad King, and off to the side are three members of the school faculty, Snipe, Midnight, and All-Might."
Principal Nezu then turned so he could gesture to Rumi and Izuku. "Our special guest instructors today are Miruko and her government liaison, Agent Midoriya."
Rumi could not see what Izuku was doing, so she went with a simple but curt nod to the assembled teachers and students.
"Now that everyone is introduced, I think it is time we begin the lesson." Principal Nezu said authoritatively. "The subject of today's lesson will be about teamwork and cooperation. Miruko, if you could start please?"
Briefly glancing at her silent partner, Rumi stepped forward and cleared her throat before speaking.
"Honestly I think all of you have more experience working with other people than I do. Though I can see why Principal Nezu would want me to talk about my experience with my hero liaison."
So far so good. All the students were paying close attention to her every word and to them it looked like she had actually prepared a lesson, and was not just making stuff up as she went.
"I will admit, Midoriya and I did not exactly start off on the best of terms." Rumi said honestly. "I was not happy about being stuck with someone I had never met before and...well frankly I was a total asshole to Midoriya. The poor guy was just doing his job and I treated him like dirt because I was too stubborn to change my ways. Eventually I got what I wanted, he quit and made it very clear he hated my guts."
There was a ripple of curious murmurs from the assembled students and teachers as Rumi continued to speak.
"A little while later I was…"
She paused and turned to look at Izuku who was standing off to the side silently.
"Am I allowed to tell them what happened?" She asked. "Or is it still classified or whatever?"
Izuku shrugged before answering. "If you want to tell them you can. The information is going to be given to the public soon so no sense in hiding it now."
Nodding, Rumi continued to tell her story.
"Basically I got shot with an anti-quirk bullet. It made me so weak that a bunch of lowlife thugs beat the shit outta me and captured me."
The assembled students all began to whisper to each other incredulously as the teachers all looked at each other with various levels of concern.
"I was chained up in a shitty basement for several days." Rumi explained. "So I had a lot of time to think about how screwed I was. My agent had tried to get other pro-heroes to look for me, but because of my reputation as a pain in the ass none of them helped. Long story short I was saved by none other than Midoriya himself."
Rumi could not help but smile as there was a polite round of applause that made Izuku fidget awkwardly.
"Y'see Midoriya was the last person my agent called." Rumi elaborated. "He had every right to ignore her and go about his day...but he didn't. He had the Ministry of Defense spend a lot of time looking for me, then personally led the rescue operation that saved my life. Not because he wanted to, but because it was the right thing to do. He still says he was just doing his job, but what he did was more than just a job, it was something a hero would do."
Rumi smiled and glanced over at her partner who was now visibly uncomfortable being the center of attention of a group that included All-Might himself.
Looking back at the students in front of her, it was clear to Rumi that the teenagers all had a new level of respect for Izuku. Hell, the one brown-haired girl looked like she had just found a new role-model to follow.
"You wanna know what makes that whole thing even more impressive?" Rumi said loudly to get the attention of her audience. "Midoriya...well he has a pretty shitty quirk. Like, there is no way the thing is helpful in the slightest. So he basically rescued me without using a quirk at all. On top of that, he was very humble about the whole thing afterwards. I didn't even know it was him who rescued me for several days after. I had to pry the information out of my agent who basically said that I did not deserve how kind Midoriya was to me. Honestly, I agree. I treated him like shit from day one simply because I thought he was some weak pansy. Now don't get me wrong, the thing I respect most is strength and accomplishments, but Midoriya proved you cannot judge someone you don't know. He earned my respect several times over, and I am proud to call him my partner."
There was another round of applause as Principal Nezu stepped forward and nodded respectfully to Rumi.
"That was a wonderful story Miruko." The small rodent-like man said. "You learned a valuable lesson and I am delighted that you could share your experience with my students. Now I think it is Agent Midoriya's turn to speak."
Freezing like a deer caught in the headlights, Izuku pointed to himself in disbelief.
"You want me to speak?" He asked incredulously. "I thought I was just tagging along. I didn't prepare anything to talk about."
Chuckling warmly, Principal Nezu waved away Izuku's concerns and gestured for him to step forward. "That is not a problem. I am positive you have valuable knowledge to share, even if you think you do not."
Awkwardly scratching the back of his head, Izuku nodded and stepped forward as Rumi gave him a discreet thumbs-up. She was eager to see what her partner would talk about. He might be a bit grouchy, but the guy is the definition of professional and would surely win everyone over.
The green-haired man was silent for a moment before speaking in a stiff and professional manner.
"Hello, my name is Izuku Midoriya. I am twenty-six years old and currently working as Miruko's hero-liaison. I was formerly a first lieutenant in the JSDF and then a member of Japan's classified counter-terrorism unit. I am now a special agent working for the Ministry of Defense."
Rumi arched an eyebrow but shrugged slightly. A little stiff and formal for sure, but that was probably just Izuku's nervous reaction to public speaking.
"So…teamwork and cooperation." Izuku said slowly, clearly still trying to think up a proper speech. "Unlike the pro-heroes you see on the news every day, I don't have an amazing quirk. In fact the majority of the population is the same way. Honestly I have never really liked pro-heroes that much. When I was a kid I was bullied every single day by my peers because I foolishly believed that I could be a pro-hero even without a powerful quirk."
The mood immediately became somber. Many of the students awkwardly avoided Izuku's gaze while the teachers sadly stayed silent. Rumi had been keeping an eye on All-Might the entire time, and it was clear that the man was having a hard time keeping himself composed while he listened to Izuku's tragic past.
Obviously realizing how he had drastically changed the tone of the lecture, Izuku awkwardly cleared his throat and continued.
"Sorry, that got kind of dark." He said apologetically. "My point is I realized that as much as I wanted to deny it, my bullies were right. When you have a useless quirk like me there is no chance that you can become a pro-hero, even if you had spent your whole life believing that it was possible. So instead I joined the military. In the military you are taught to be part of a unit. To work together with your comrades to complete impossible tasks. I realized that by myself I was powerless, but when I was part of a team we could move mountains if we wanted to. Now I am in no way trying to disrespect pro-heroes and their accomplishments, I am just sharing my personal experience. Cooperation and teamwork are essential parts of military doctrine, and it is drilled into your skull from day one that you cannot afford to be picky about who you work with. I have had to work with some truly unpleasant people, but because we all received the same training I knew that I could count on them even if we disagreed about everything else. People like to romanticize the idea of a lone wolf, but in reality it is teamwork and cooperation that gets things done."
Izuku then gestured to Rumi as he continued. "Miruko makes it sound like I was the only one involved in saving her, but in reality the whole operation was only possible because I had competent subordinates and had planned for every scenario. Nobody had powerful quirks, we just had each other and our equipment. That is the difference between people like you and me. By myself I am not that much of a threat. But if you were to face me with fifty of my comrades backing me up that would be an entirely different story."
Rumi watched proudly as Izuku finished his speech and gave a polite bow to Principal Nezu and the assembled students.
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my knowledge. I hope you will find it useful."
Clapping his hands together enthusiastically, Principal Nezu stepped forward and spoke with an excited sparkle in his eye as the students and teachers gave the green-haired agent a round of applause.
"Most excellent Agent Midoriya!" The rodent-like person said warmly. "The knowledge you have provided us with today will most certainly be put to good use."
Waiting for the applause to die down, Principal Nezu spoke with a mischievous gleam in his eye. "Now we can move onto the second part of the lesson. As they say, actions speak louder than words. Miruko, would you be against having a little sparring session with our students?"
Rumi grinned as the students all began to whisper excitedly to each other.
"Fine by me." She said confidently. "I hope your students are up for a challenge. I am not gonna take it easy on them just because they are kids."
Principal Nezu returned the grin as he gestured to the two groups of students standing nearby. "I am sure they would not want it any other way. Your opponents will be the students of class 1-B. They have had plenty of practice here at school, but little experience using their skills for real. Class 1-A on the other hand, has been involved in several incidents with villains which allowed them to hone their skills, but this also means that Class 1-A has lacked a proper understanding of the technical knowledge behind their skills. I think Agent Midoriya would be the perfect person to help them understand the more nuanced lessons they have missed."
Arching an eyebrow curiously, Rumi crossed her arms and gave Principal Nezu a suspicious look. "You better not be planning on using my partner as a punching bag for your kids." She said with a hint of steel in her voice. "He may be smart, but he is still a normal person."
"Of course not." The humanoid rodent said reassuringly. "I meant that your partner would observe the students' skills in action and offer his professional advice. No harm would come to him."
Rumi and Principal Nezu were interrupted by the slightly annoyed voice of Izuku.
"You know I am standing right here?" The field agent said bluntly. "I know I don't have a useful quirk but I am still an adult. It would be nice to be treated like an equal."
Turning to face Izuku, Principal Nezu quickly nodded and gave an apologetic bow as Rumi gave her partner an exasperated look.
"I apologise Agent Midoriya." The principal said diplomatically. "I am sorry for not asking you first. Would you be opposed to giving Class 1-A some of your expert advice?"
Seemingly satisfied, Izuku gestured to the watching students. "Why can't I spar with them like Miruko?"
Rumi stepped forward with an annoyed look on her face before Principal Nezu could respond.
"Iz-...Midoriya I know how you feel about this but be realistic. I am sure these kids could turn you into paste if they make a mistake. Stop trying to act tough and just do what the principal says."
Squaring his shoulders, Izuku took a step closer so he was within arms reach of Rumi and crossed his arms defiantly.
"Remember what we talked about in the car?" He said cryptically. "I can handle myself."
Feeling many curious eyes on her and Izuku, Rumi groaned in annoyance and held up her hands in defeat. "Fine! But don't come crying to me when you get sent to the hospital because you underestimated these kids."
Seemingly satisfied, Izuku stepped back with a smirk on his lips. "Like I said, I can handle myself."
Rumi turned to face the concerned Principal Nezu who was worriedly examining Izuku.
"Don't bother trying to talk him out of it." She said flatly. "When he gets like this there is no changing his mind. Just let him spar. If he gets hurt he only has his own dumb ass to blame."
Principal Nezu looked like he wanted to object, but after glancing at the defiant Izuku he sighed heavily and nodded. "Understood. I hope your partner knows what he is doing."
Facing the group of students and teachers, Principal Nezu gestured to a nearby building and spoke so everyone could hear.
"Alright we may as well begin. Faculty, Class 1-A, and Agent Midoriya please proceed to the observation area. Class 1-B and Miruko will remain here until the sparring session begins."
- A/N -
- sorry about the delay in uploading this chapter. I will be honest, I recently got a new game and have been playing that a bunch. Anyways, the next chapter should be up in a bit.
- I have no plans on abandoning this fic any time soon. But if I did I would change the story description to let you all know. I know how frustrating it is to wait for a story to update, only to never see it ever update again.
- In regards to the plot progress, I would say we are about one third(ish) of the way through the story. I am trying to keep this story at a manageable length, as I recently had an idea for a new fic.
- Anyways, thank you for all the support, I hope you all are doing well.
